00:00Is there angst? Is there stress? How would we describe the Trent Williams situation?
00:05I do want to put this face on it for people. The Niners have 10 days. I heard the guys
00:10earlier
00:10being like, this isn't going to drag into camp, is it? No, it's not. The Niners, from a financial
00:16standpoint, my opinion, I believe they've got 10 days to do this. A $10 million roster bonus is
00:23due in a week and a half. 10 days from today. You're not not figuring it out by then. You're
00:30not giving Trent Williams $10 million and then being like, OK, now we're going to trade you
00:34like, no, no, no. This isn't even about the cap. This is about this is just about good
00:43old fashioned who holds the money. This is just a monopoly. That's it. And they've got
00:4910 days to do this. I firmly believe they will. But whenever this stuff comes up, there's
00:54always a little fan angst, pressure, stress. And then that brings with it the unknown, which
01:01causes anger. I hear a lot of come on, Trent, just be a team player, which is funny because
01:09if you understand the game that's being played, you're just telling Trent because he has $230
01:15million that he should not get the money from someone who has $200 billion.
01:21Yeah, just about. And they just sold off 5% of the team and got like however hundreds
01:27of millions of dollars just cash on hand. Right. So he's he's the little guy in this
01:31one. The way, the way little guy. Which is ironic. The way, right. If you compare Jed
01:37to him, Jed's the big guy. And Jed ain't gonna hurt this year. He's gonna survive. Jed doesn't
01:43need to move anybody. Nobody's attacking his legs. No. None. They're not. But you already
01:48look at Trent's contract and he already has voidable years, which means we're paying you
01:53for years. We both know you're not going to play. And that goes through 2029 when he'll
01:57be 41. And if you did something for Trent again, you probably would have to slot more
02:02money into the down the road portion of your cap, which is not going to hamstring you.
02:08And as we know, the cap goes up every year. So even if you have to put 30 million in,
02:13we're
02:14going to defer that in cap money and you pay that in five years, the cap will go up by
02:19more than 30 million. What am I about to say? I have two words and you know exactly what
02:23they are. You were mouthing it yesterday during the cam interview. Say it. Say it. Cap shmap. Cap
02:29shmap. Cam Inman yesterday was saying, don't worry about the cap. There is no cap. And you're
02:34over there grinning. Cap shmap. Cap shmap. You wouldn't interrupt cam, but which is good. But
02:40you're over there acting like a clown. Cap shmap. Look at me. And you made me look because I was
02:44looking down. I'm like, hey, hey, finally, I'm like, I knew what was happening. And finally,
02:54I'm like, all right, go ahead. But you're right. Yeah, actually, let's hear that cam
02:59Inman yesterday on the Trent Williams situation. I don't think I've met or seen a savvier businessman
03:07in the NFL. I've been covered for 25 years. Savvier than Trent Williams, who understands
03:12his leverage, understands how the business works. When he signed his contract two years
03:17ago, the three year deal. Right. So he knew going into this year, he'd have to rework his
03:21deal because players of his stature just don't play for play out a deal with no guaranteed
03:25money. So and the Niners surely understand that, too. And right now they're jostling in
03:30terms of contract talks. And the report today that the Niners are willing to trade him, they're
03:37willing to trade anybody. They've always said that. It's just what what is he going to
03:41fetch. Can Trent Williams get you to first round draft pick? Would that make you part
03:45with him rather than pay him another year of 30 something million dollars? You know, that's
03:50something that they'd have to decide. I would think they I don't expect him to leave. Obviously,
03:54they're not going to outright release him. That would be foolish because they can get something
03:58for him. Is somebody going to be willing to trade away two first round picks for him?
04:03Well, look at the Raiders just gave a center $81 million contract that's essentially fully
04:08guaranteed for three years. That's that's a stupendous amount of money. And I don't think
04:12the Niners would, you know, give Trent Williams a three year, $80 million guaranteed contract. But
04:17heck, if I'm him, I'm asking for three years, $100 million guaranteed because he plays a much
04:22more premier position where the Niners don't have a ready made backup to go in and replace him.
04:27Okay, so that's Cam Inman. And then here's Adam Schefter today on the Pat McAfee show on the
04:34situation. Trent Williams, first of all, they have been discussing a new deal. And so on Saturday,
04:39when he wants a certain amount of money, the Niners say to him, hey, look, you think you're
04:42worth that money and we can't reach this agreement. If you want to go find that from another team
04:47that will then give us back the value of like a first round draft pick because you want all this
04:53money, then then we're willing to listen. But the 49ers aren't shopping him and he's not expected
04:58to be traded. Now, could something materialize? Sure, something always could. But I don't think
05:03that that's probably a realistic option. And it's more along the lines of them placating him,
05:08say, go ahead and see if you could find somebody willing to pay you that and take care of them
05:12at
05:13the same time. That's a tough doubleheader to satisfy. Okay, so did everybody grab that? I find this
05:20very educational. This is interesting to me. Understand, trading Trent Williams would mean
05:28A, a major cap hit for no real good reason. 34 million. Okay. B, oh, you don't have a left
05:37tackle.
05:37Right. In theory, you could get one in return either as an actual left tackle or draft picks.
05:43Sure. But the acquiring team is going to need to satisfy what Trent is asking for financially
05:51and give the 49ers at least one first round draft pick. Right. Who the hell doing that?
05:58Might be a team that is thinking that they're just maybe one player away, one left tackle away from
06:05having a good window. Malpractice. 38 years old. I'm going to extend somebody into two or three years
06:12at 38 years old and give up that kind of draft capital. Nobody's doing that. Nobody's doing that.
06:19And the same way when you say, oh, the 49ers, they could move Trent Williams. No, they can't.
06:24They're not doing that. Why would they take a huge cap hit and then not have a left tackle?
06:30Like, this is, I try my best to look at these situations and go, okay, what makes sense for
06:36the two sides? And the only thing that makes sense is that y'all figure this out. And the only
06:43reason it
06:44hasn't been yet, I think, is because we haven't reached the deadline yet. No deadline. Exactly.
06:48And you talked about 10 days from now, a roster bonus needing to be paid and they're going to pay
06:52that money, but they'd rather have that be a part of the new deal and give him whatever he's going
06:57to get as a signing bonus. Again, probably, you know, 35 million. Cam was talking about three years
07:02and a hundred. If it's that and 45 of that is guaranteed, then you give them a lot of it
07:08in
07:08the signing bonus. Because one thing the Niners do have is a lot of cash on hand. David Lombardi
07:12will join us here in about an hour. He's really good with this stuff, the numbers and how it might
07:17work. But I would say it's a 99% certainty that they work this out. They're not going to drag
07:23it past
07:24the deadline and pay him 10 million. It's going to happen within the next 10 days, but there is a
07:28small sliver of a chance that they do trade him. But it's a small sliver. Yeah. I mean,
07:33like, like Adam said, something could develop. That's always a possibility. Um, but I like,
07:40definitely wonder where everybody is at on this one, because you hear from a lot of fans about
07:46ideas of look, wow. I mean, he, he obviously is getting old. There's an injury risk. Have the 49ers
07:52done the right thing here? I think is, is a fair question to ask because they don't have
07:58another option. And two years ago, they probably thought he was going to retire by now. So why
08:05don't they have another option? Um, maybe it's because they got into the year and went, Oh,
08:10he's still playing really well. They probably asked him, you want to play beyond this year?
08:14Yeah. Okay. Well, we'll probably get it. But there are other reasons too. And we can get into exactly,
08:19uh, how you go about getting a really good left tackle, because you usually don't just
08:25wait until the, what the 30th pick and just snack one up there. It usually doesn't go that way.
08:30Usually not unless it's a deep draft for left tackles, which this one is allegedly, right?
