00:00510. Thanks for texting in. Fans are annoyed at Trent because he does this every two years.
00:07Well, why does he do this every two years?
00:09Because his contract is down to the last year.
00:11Like, if you don't want Trent to do this, then sign him to a five-year deal
00:16and put a bunch of guarantees in the first three or four years.
00:18Then he won't do this.
00:19But he's super old. They don't want to do that.
00:21Exactly.
00:23I think it's just annoying because there are so many players that don't get to do this.
00:27And I'm thinking about Juice. Kyle Juszczyk.
00:30They go to him and say, you need to take a pay cut.
00:34He's like, I'd rather not.
00:35Okay, we're going to cut you then.
00:36And we'll see how you go out on the free market.
00:39And then maybe we'll bring you back. No hard feelings.
00:41Sorry, you're not a left tackle.
00:43Right.
00:44I guess that's what I'm getting at.
00:46I don't care if you're mad at Trent. Be mad at Trent.
00:49But Trent is not doing anything that all great players don't do.
00:54And by the way, Trent is a left tackle.
00:57And that is premium.
00:59That is premium.
01:01You know what I mean?
01:02Nick Bosa is an edge rusher.
01:04That's premium.
01:04He did this.
01:06Oh, he doesn't do it every two years because he got a five-year deal.
01:09He'll probably do it next year.
01:10If he has a really good year, you're going to see every Bosa ever has done this
01:14for the last 30 years of their lives.
01:16So, this is what premium players at premium positions do.
01:22They can, and quite frankly, they should.
01:25Like, their agent is not working, and they are doing themselves a disservice in this league
01:31without guaranteed contracts if they don't do this.
01:35Like, to me, where the sort of discord is is that I think people think there's a big trickle-down
01:42effect to this.
01:43And I just don't believe that.
01:44I don't believe Trent Williams is threatening anything that the 49ers are trying to do right now.
01:50The only thing that Trent is threatening is the cash that somebody has in their pocket.
01:55And I, for one, do not give a rip of all you millionaires and billionaires.
02:01I don't care what you share on the plane and what pocket it ends up in.
02:05You're all going to be fine.
02:08As a fan, it's a simple question.
02:10Do you want Trent on the team?
02:12I say yes.
02:13That's it.
02:14Get it done.
02:15Yeah, and it's not going to affect whether or not Juwan comes back, and it's not going to affect the
02:19morale in the room.
02:20That's another myth I think that a lot of us have that, oh, if Trent's going to keep doing this
02:24every couple years,
02:25his teammates are going to resent him because they don't have the power to do that.
02:29And I'm sure there's a little bit of that, but it's Trent Williams.
02:31He's the boombox guy.
02:33He's the left tackle.
02:34He's the big dog in a room full of big dogs.
02:37So they all don't count each other's pockets, and it's March.
02:41Now, if it were different, like if we were coming up on week one and he's doing this, then it
02:46becomes a little bit more, you know, antsy, angsty, so to speak.
02:49But this is just March business.
02:51Day two of the new league year, Trent is the fourth highest paid based on the guarantee at signing.
02:57And not that he has to reset the market, but he's as good as these other guys ahead of him.
03:02Yeah, and I actually don't think that there would be much resentment from what I hear and see.
03:07Most players want other players when they have the opportunity to get as much money as possible.
03:11That can only trickle down to them no matter what position you're in.
03:15You know what I mean?
03:16I've never, or I should say very rarely, do you hear a player talking about another player and think of
03:24it in terms of that where you're like,
03:26I mean, sometimes they'll say, like, we need you here.
03:29You know what I mean?
03:30It's August 30th.
03:32We need you here.
03:34You'll get that every now and again.
03:35But for the most part, they're rooting for the player.
03:38They're not rooting for the team.
03:40Can you imagine that interview?
03:41I'm really hoping that the Niners and Jed York are able to save some money in this process.
03:45My goodness.
03:46When I met Jed last week, he was eating peanut butter and jelly.
03:50I was worried about him.
03:51What do you think your guy is saying through all this right now, Mr. President?
03:55Who am I guy, Brock?
03:56Yes.
03:57Are you kidding?
03:58You know what?
03:59Are you kidding?
03:59Jed, this is Brock.
04:00Brock, you know what I think we should do?
04:02We should trade him for future picks and let's see what the young guys can do.
04:07Are we boys or are you just trying to trap me, bro?
04:10I'll tell you what, Jed.
04:11I hear there's a guy I had coming out of Chattanooga.
04:13It is underrated.
04:14I think you can get him in the seventh round, just like me.
04:17He's got great feet.
04:18I like the player.
04:20Brock Purdy.
04:21Brock Purdy probably would give back some of his millions for Trent Williams right now,
04:25if you're allowed to.
04:28So, anyway, I don't know.
04:30I just think it lands weird with people, and I understand that.
04:36And part of that is simply because we get to hear how much money they make,
04:40and we get to hear whenever there's a contract negotiation or a stalemate or whatever.
04:45But when you whittle it all down, those of you who are mad at Trent Williams,
04:51are you mad at a guy for standing up for himself and taking advantage of what is there for him
04:57in life?
04:58That's odd to me.
05:00Like, we should all do that.
05:02We should all do that.
05:03It might be a little jealousy because of his ability to do just this.
05:07And you mentioned it earlier in the show, and we have to always remind people,
05:11new audience, that in 10 days he's due a $10 million roster bonus.
05:15Just for having your name on a piece of paper, you get $10 million.
05:19And so, yeah, that would be great for him, but the team doesn't want to pay him that $10 million
05:23and then two weeks later have to give him a new deal
05:26or then trade him and take on a cap hit.
05:29So, so much of the financial gymnastics are not in the team's favor.
05:33And then you add in the fact that Trent Williams, according to the survey I was looking at at ESPN,
05:38he's the fourth-ranked left tackle in pro football.
05:42Even though he's almost 38, he's still top four.
05:45So, he's got all of the leverage in this.
05:47And, you know, he's just, he's using it right now,
05:50which doesn't really bother me because it's March.
05:53I will say this, too.
05:54I don't know how many fans realize this because it's a little bit behind the scenes.
05:58Like, we watch the games, and that's what we see, and we understand those characteristics.
06:02The 49ers negotiate very, very hard.
06:05That is, that's a characteristic of Parag and everybody who is sort of part of that.
06:11They are, they are hard.
06:13They take pride in it.
06:14I don't know if they're being as successful as they used to be because I think a lot of people
06:19are,
06:19A, hip to their game, but, B, they've had some success and they've got a lot of good players.
06:25And those players end up having really good leverage because you perform well, you get 13 wins,
06:30and people go, ooh, I think we'd like to keep that player.
06:33And that player says, great, that's going to cost you.
06:36But the 49ers negotiate hard.
06:38They don't try to, you know, just fold, which is why we've had almost every August the last few years
06:46where something is going on.
06:48Nick Bosa, Deebo, Trent, Brandon Ayuk, Jawan Jennings last year, now Trent again.
06:57You know, people hear this and they go, Trent is stubborn.
07:00So are the Niners.
07:02Big time.
07:04But you're right.
07:06Not only is there a deadline 10 days from now, if that were to pass without something happening,
07:11then Trent only becomes more powerful because now the Niners are $10 million pot committed.
07:18Now you're really not going to dump him.
07:20Right.
07:21And it's an option bonus.
07:22I apologize.
07:23I'm looking at SpotTrack right now.
07:25It's still a clean 10 on March 20th.
07:27And his cap hit for this year is almost $39 million.
07:30So a restructure, he gets more cash.
07:33They can reduce that cap number and go ahead and spread that money on down the road.
07:38There you go.
07:39In other words, they can spend more this year if they tack another year on.
07:45Yeah.
07:45And all the financial breakdowns from David Lombardi coming up.
07:48But I'm kind of with you.
07:49It's going to happen.
07:50It's just a question of how much is he going to get.
07:52It's just a question of how much is he going to get.
