00:00Wait, what's your answer to that?
00:01The biggest problem with the Niner offense so far this year is?
00:04Well, you could say the run game, and you won't be wrong,
00:07but I think that it's just as easy as saying the offensive line
00:11because, yeah, they've been fine in pass protection,
00:14but if you can't run it, then Shanahan can't win.
00:18You can't win, Shanahan, if you don't run it.
00:21And I've done the numbers, and I won't bore you with all of the deep dives I've done,
00:26but historically, when the Niners run it 30 or more times, they're 47-7,
00:32and to run it 30 or more times, you have to be able to, I don't know, get yards.
00:37And you get the lead, you get yards, Shanahan wins.
00:41When you trail and you throw it, Shanahan loses.
00:44Well, except for not the case.
00:47I mean, both of the games they won, they had the ball losing
00:51with a couple minutes to go, and they won them both.
00:53888-957-9570.
00:56We're about to go to the phones.
00:57There's a text that just came in on the Boxer and Gerson Work Injury Attorney's text line
01:00that I want to address after the calls.
01:02Okay.
01:03Because it's just like, I'm getting upset.
01:07Oh, no.
01:08It's unfair.
01:09But anyway, Robert in Emeryville.
01:11Hi, Robert.
01:11Thanks for calling.
01:14Hey, thank you.
01:15It's nice to hear your guys' voices.
01:18I hate to say I agree with you, but I do.
01:23What I thought, what was the question?
01:26Yeah, I mean, you said it much better than I would repeat it.
01:29So far, what is the biggest problem with the 49ers offense is?
01:36And I'm going to quote Tim Ryan, block better.
01:39They got to block better.
01:40Yeah.
01:41It's just, I'm old.
01:46So when Joe Montana didn't have protection, he didn't look so good.
01:50So it's kind of been that way with quarterbacks all along.
01:53You give them time, and they'll pick you apart.
01:57Robert, thanks.
01:58Yeah.
01:59Like, now, here's the other thing, though.
02:01And you talked about this.
02:02Their pass blocking has been better than their run blocking.
02:05However, for me, it's a little too simple to just say block better
02:10or the offensive line.
02:12Again, the whole thing is a concert.
02:13It always is.
02:14Everybody's got a role.
02:16I'm not saying Christian is playing poorly, but this goes across the board.
02:21I don't think it's just turnkey, block better, they run better.
02:24I think it's a very, very big piece of it.
02:26But, you know, Christian is also, he's at the drop sees this year.
02:30I know most of that's in the pass game, but he's fumbled.
02:33Like, they've got to do better, too.
02:35The running game's got to do better.
02:37And, by the way, it is easier to block in the run game
02:40when your passing game is moving the ball down the field
02:43because they're going to have to respect it more.
02:45Yeah, and you mentioned this before about predictability versus unpredictability.
02:50And Greg Cosell yesterday talked about where you get into second and long
02:54and third and long and third and medium.
02:57Well, now you become a predictable offense.
02:59And the key for Shanahan has always been to throw it to set up the run,
03:03run it to set up the throw.
03:04And if you're sitting at second and nine or third and eight,
03:08well, now you're going to have a hard time running it.
03:10And you actually said this earlier in the show where one of their biggest runs last week
03:15was it was third and seven, and they ran it, and they got 11 yards.
03:19And that unpredictability is what has helped them at times.
03:23But it never used to be where you needed that
03:26to be the way you were able to run it effectively.
03:28You could run it effectively, and then you could do that
03:30because you were running it effectively.
03:32And right now, I could bore you to tears with all the Christian McCaffrey runs
03:36because I've logged every single one.
03:38He only has five on the year that are 10 or more yards
03:42and none that are more than, I think, 13 is as long for the year.
03:47That's not going to work.
03:48No, no, no.
03:51Run the ball.
03:53Like, what are we watching?
03:55The Niners as a team don't have a single 20-yard rush.
03:59Right.
03:59Nor do they have a rushing touchdown.
04:00Only team in the league.
04:02And then we're out here screaming and yelling at whichever quarterback you want.
04:09I mean, it doesn't matter.
04:11It doesn't matter.
04:12They've got to run the ball.
04:15And that's going to change everything.
04:18Let's go to Larry in Hayward.
04:19Hi, Larry.
04:20Thank you for calling.
04:22Hey, guys.
04:23I think it is the run game.
04:24If you really look at the numbers, they're average 88 rushing yards per game.
04:31That's 28th in the league.
04:33Part of that is you've got to have Kittle back in there
04:35because he's a big presence with the blocking.
04:38And also with that offensive line, they've got to block better as well.
04:42So it's all around.
04:43But it is the run game.
04:44Larry, thanks.
04:45888-957-9570.
04:47If you want to weigh in on this,
04:49the biggest problem that you see with the 49er run game,
04:53I'm sorry, the 49er offense so far is what?
04:58And fill in that blank.
04:59Now, the only answer that I'm seeing a lot on our text line,
05:03on YouTube, social media,
05:04the other thing that you could say is injuries.
05:09But to me, that's, first of all, that kind of plays a little soft to me
05:16because if you look around the league, it's happening everywhere.
05:20Are the 49ers the most excessive version of it?
05:22Probably.
05:24You know, it's a lot of big names.
05:25It's their whole receiving core.
05:27It's George Kittle, all of that stuff.
05:29But everybody is dealing with this.
05:32Everyone's dealing with this,
05:34which is why I want to spotlight this text that just came in,
05:38Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line.
05:40And even though I'm about to rip your text,
05:42I really appreciate you doing it.
05:44Thank you so much for listening to the show.
05:46It's very, very nice.
05:48559 text in, though.
05:49Listen to the way this is worded.
05:52Shanahan's inability to keep everyone healthy.
05:56Shanahan.
05:56Right.
05:57Inability to keep everyone healthy.
06:00Well, let me just pick through that real quick because Christian McCaffrey
06:03leads the entire league in touches, 100 touches in four games.
06:10That is reckless the way he's using McCaffrey.
06:13And, well, McCaffrey's not hurt.
06:15So, if that was going to be the case,
06:18then wouldn't McCaffrey be the one who was injured
06:21if Shanahan was the one who is not keeping his players healthy?
06:25George Kittle was just running.
06:27He was literally just running down the field.
06:30The Shanahan problem.
06:31And he got hurt.
06:32He got put on IR.
06:33And Nick Bosa was rushing the passer.
06:36Rushing the passer.
06:37And he got double teamed.
06:38It's a Shanahan problem.
06:39It's a Shanahan problem.
06:41And, you know, we can go through all the injuries.
06:43And, you know, if you want to put blame on Juwan Jennings' recent injury,
06:47well, that's a Brock Purdy problem because Brock kind of floated it.
06:51Yeah, but why did he float it, Dibs?
06:54He floated it.
06:55Kyle Shanahan.
06:55Because Kyle Shanahan put him out there with a toe.
06:59I mean, you went for two, Kyle.
07:00You should have gone for one.
07:02Right?
07:02There you go.
07:03I just...
07:03Eddie Pinero's toes don't hurt.
07:05Right.
07:06And, you know, Jake Moody's no longer hurt.
07:10So, that's Kyle Shanahan.
07:12I don't know about that.
07:12Right.
07:13I don't...
07:13I mean...
07:14Hurt feelings.
07:14Anyway, it's a tough one.
07:17Right.
07:17And I look at the biggest issue for this team,
07:21and we could talk about the O-line and the run game,
07:23and you're not wrong.
07:25They're 27th in the red zone in touchdown percentage.
07:28Christian McCaffrey has 16 carries in the red zone for 10 yards.
07:3316 carries.
07:34Incredible.
07:3510 yards.
07:35This is incredible.
07:37Now, a big part of that is when you get down in the red zone,
07:40the lower red zone, which is inside the 10,
07:42as a defense, you line up and you're like,
07:44all right, we got Tonjus and Farrell.
07:47I think we're pretty good maybe going man-to-man on them if necessary.
07:50Right.
07:51Where's number 23?
07:52Let's key on that guy.
07:53For sure.
07:54Make that guy beat us.
07:55Well, or whoever's back there.
07:57I mean, again, this is kind of where defenses are going to be at
08:01against the 49ers.
08:03Just before we leave the injury thing,
08:06I think that there's an ebb and flow to this.
08:09In other words, you come in here Monday,
08:11and you're kind of holding your breath.
08:13And I know it happens fast on a week where the Niners play on Thursday.
08:17But there's normally a flow to this, right?
08:19You come in Monday, and the coach will do a conference call,
08:23and he'll give you at least the spots where you need to look out.
08:26Ooh, Ricky Pearsall got a little instability in the knee.
08:29Okay.
08:30And then Tuesday they're off, and on Wednesday you get the boom.
08:33That's like he didn't practice.
08:34And it's a question mark, questionable concern, all that stuff.
08:39There's an ebb and flow to the injury thing.
08:41To me, once you get to Wednesday and Thursday,
08:44and this is now talking about the fans,
08:46this is the time where you stop feeling sorry for yourself.
08:49And that's what – now, I'm not worried about the Niners
08:51because they're professionals and they deal with this.
08:53I was even driving around this morning, and I'm thinking about –
08:58because I've got these family members down in L.A.
09:00and they're Rams fans.
09:01They're awful people.
09:02And I don't want any text messages from them tonight.
09:05Don't text me.
09:06Don't trash talk when your team is fully healthy and my team is not.
09:11Don't text me, bro.
09:12Don't – but you know what?
09:13Then I got here, and I'm like, well, that's soft.
09:16Now, fire away, man.
09:18Fire away.
09:18We have arrived at Thursday Night Football.
09:21It is time to stop feeling sorry for ourselves
09:27because of the Niners' injuries.
09:30Lovely Christy's driving me over to the ferry earlier today, okay?
09:34We get there, and she flips open her phone,
09:38and she's – because she likes advice on –
09:41it's like the week is starting, who –
09:44she knows that we know what the practice reports are around the league.
09:48Right.
09:49She doesn't want to go find a Twitter feed or what.
09:52She's like, just tell me who's playing.
09:54She flips open her fantasy team, and it's like Q, Q, Q, I-R, Q, Q, I-R, I-R, Q, Q.
10:03And she looks at me, and she goes, this isn't just the Niners.
10:07This is everybody.
10:09Right.
10:10Everybody's hurt.
10:11So, at least –
10:14It's like an REM song.
10:17Everybody's hurt sometimes.
10:21Yeah.
10:22That's a nice poll.
10:23I was like, are the Niners the most hurt?
10:27Maybe you're the most hurt.
10:28I don't know.
10:29Is it in the most key spots?
10:31Is it the most future Hall of Famers?
10:33I don't know.
10:34But you all have fantasy teams, and you all know you might not have a roster this week.
10:40It's insanity.
10:42And, in fact, you know what I notice around the league for a lot of teams?
10:46It's their running back.
10:47We've got ours.
10:49We've got ours.
10:50But Lamar is probably not going to play.
10:53And Burrow is gone for most of the year.
10:55Carson Wentz in London.
10:57He's going against Dylan Gabriel.
10:59We've gotten a healthy dose of Mariota so far on and on around the league
11:04from Malik Neighbors to Xavier Worthy, Tyreek Hill, holy hell.
11:09And I could go on and on and on.
11:11The Cardinals are starting someone I've never heard of at running back this weekend.
11:16He's been inactive all year.
11:18Okay?
11:20Everybody's hurt.
11:22Stop feeling sorry for yourselves.
11:26You've got to go play the game.
11:28Right.
11:28And everybody plays on Thursday.
11:30So, everybody gets their turn.
11:32Exactly.
11:33You get a turn to have the short week.
11:35And it just so happens that you get it now without your two wide receivers,
11:39your tight end, and your quarterback.
11:41So, yeah.
11:42Go out there and do your best.
11:44And, oh, by the way, the Rams probably won't have their tight end.
11:47I don't think that Higby's going to play.
11:49Their tackle is questionable.
11:51So, it's not like the Rams are coming in fully rested and all equipped and ready to rumble.
11:57So, yeah.
11:58There's no hard feelings.
12:00There's no feeling sorry for anybody in the NFL.
12:02It's the NFL.
12:03Look, they're way healthier, but it doesn't matter.
12:06That's the way it goes.
12:07It's the way the cookie crumbled.
12:09We have to deal with this.
12:10But my main point in bringing that up is stop saying that Kyle Shanahan hurts people.
12:18Stop.
12:19Every single coach in the NFL hurts people if Kyle Shanahan hurts people.
12:25Football hurts people.
12:28And, yes, we've gotten our healthy dose yet again.
12:33Is it an age thing?
12:35That's a different conversation.
12:36That's a roster construction thing.
12:39But this concept that Kyle sends out warriors to their doom is, of all the crazy things I hear people say,
12:47that's the top of the list.
12:49That Kyle hurts people.
12:50Well, he got Trey Lance hurt.
12:52I knew you were going to say it.
12:53Well, we can agree to that.
12:54Like, you know, you and I can finally agree to one thing, which would be he ran that poor guy.
13:00I can't believe he ran that play.
13:02Ran him into the ground.
13:03It's ridiculous.
13:03Ran it over and over and over.
13:05I don't know why he even let Trey – he put the ball in the quarterback's hands.
13:09Not to throw it.
13:10The ball can't go in the quarterback's hands.
13:13It'd be nice if you let the quarterback throw it.
13:15They did.
13:16He threw it over his heads.
13:20All right.
13:20Let's go to Austin in the city.
13:22Hi, Austin.
13:22Thank you for the call.
13:23What's up?
13:25I didn't know much.
13:26I just want to say, hey, they barely gave Trey Lance a chance at throwing a ball.
13:31You know, he just, you know, run up the middle and get injured.
13:34But I recalled about Nick Bosa not having help in getting double teamed.
13:39You know, that can be a good reason why he got injured, too,
13:42by him not having help on the other side of the end with that.
13:45They got help for Brock Purdy, but they're not utilizing the –
13:48they're utilizing the help.
13:50They got help from McCaffrey, but not really utilizing –
13:53they're utilizing Robinson with the help, but just keep giving McCaffrey the ball.
13:58Let's say he go down, then what?
14:01We got all these helps around on the wide receiver field, but we –
14:04look, Kittle got no help.
14:06He's injured.
14:07Like, somebody needs to go.
14:08So, that's to say, this is a rebuilding season.
14:12That's – at the end of it – at the end of the day, this is a rebuilding season,
14:15and it's time to say goodbye to some of these stars while we can.
14:19Trade McCaffrey, trade somebody while we can.
14:21Yeah, Austin, thanks so much.
14:23Could not disagree more.
14:24Appreciate your opinion, and thank you very much for calling.
14:27The 49ers, I'm not sure if you've picked up your standing sheet lately.
14:30They're three and one.
14:31They're in first place in the NFC West.
14:33Right.
14:33It's not a rebuild.
14:35I do think that he has a point about Brian Robinson Jr.,
14:39and I've said it a bunch of times, and I'm looking at the number right now,
14:42and through four games, he's played 50 snaps.
14:44That wasn't his point.
14:45I agree with your point.
14:46That's something that he mentioned, though.
14:47He said trade Christian McCaffrey.
14:48Well, and you're not going to trade –
14:50He didn't utilize Brian Robinson more.
14:52He said start Brian Robinson and get rid of Christian McCaffrey.
14:55That was his point.
14:56It's not a rebuild yet.
14:58It might get to that point.
15:00If Brock Purdy can't play for a while and you lose a bunch of games,
15:03you're not going to get into full rebuild mode yet.
15:06Yeah, like the three and one.
15:07But you talked about, like, add a pass rusher at the deadline,
15:10which is in November.
15:11You might go through October and not win a game,
15:14and so that conversation may not be one that they actually even have.
15:17That changes.
15:18That changes.
15:18A lot would change.
15:19It would surprise me if they went 0 for October.
15:21I'd be also very surprised.
15:22I would surprise you.
15:23And right now you just have the one game tonight, and it is a tough one.
15:27You're probably the biggest underdog you've been in a long time in this one.
15:31Even last year when you were, you know, folding up the tent a little bit.
15:34Tonight is not – look, sorry.
15:37Sorry for those who are trying to build something up here.
15:40Tonight is not a make or break of anything type of game.
15:45It just isn't.
15:47We talked about this yesterday.
15:48The worst-case scenario when we go to bed tonight is that the 49ers are 3-2,
15:54and they've got a week and a half off,
15:56and at least the possibility that Brock Purdy, George Kittle,
16:02Jawan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall all play the next time they suit up.
16:08By the way, you know who they play in a week and a half?
16:11A team that's really hurt.
16:13Totally banged up.
16:14Bucky Irving, walking boot, Mike Evans, hamstring.
16:19Like, Baker Mayfield is questionable again this week.
16:23So, look, yeah, this is – we are so far from giving up on anything right now
16:30with regard to the Niners.
16:32Let's go to Mike in Walnut Creek.
16:33Hi, Mike.
16:34Thank you for the call.
16:37What's going on, boys?
16:38Good afternoon.
16:39Thanks for taking the call.
16:40What's up?
16:41Hey, I appreciate the – hearing about all the injuries,
16:46and I'm going to tell you why here in a second,
16:48but I think the main difference is everyone is hurt on our team.
16:54You got to keep naming two or three main guys from other teams, understandable.
16:58It's not like seven or eight, though, all of our main guys.
17:02We have one starter starting tonight on offense, right?
17:06Okay, call –
17:07No, that's not true, Mike.
17:09Mike, Mike, that's not true.
17:11He means I'm of the skill guys.
17:12Okay, okay, yeah.
17:13Christian is starting.
17:14Juszczyk is starting.
17:15Four of the five offensive linemen are starting.
17:18So – but anyway, go ahead.
17:20All right, here's why.
17:22Here's why.
17:22And here's why Kyle's never going to win a big one.
17:24And here's why, you know, when we got to a really good start this year,
17:29things started to go bad.
17:32Kyle's daddy stole his football soul to the devil to get himself a Super Bowl
17:38at the expense of all of his other family members.
17:43And so Kyle is – unfortunately, and all the football fans now,
17:49the 49er fans, having to deal with it.
17:51So should we do like a seance or a Magic 8-Ball?
17:55How do we fix this, Mike?
17:58Man, it's like – I don't know, man.
18:01You know, I think we all need to have a real conversation.
18:04You know, how we fix it is, unfortunately, we got to get rid of Kyle.
18:08Okay.
18:09All right.
18:09Thanks, Mike.
18:11Yeah.
18:12Wow.
18:12I didn't know you could do that.
18:14Mike actually wants to sacrifice someone.
18:16I didn't know you could sell the soul of your children for accolades
18:21because I now have three, and you've got three.
18:24And, I mean, I got three souls that I apparently can sell for higher heights.
18:29Oh.
18:29All right.
18:30I have a garage sale this weekend.
18:31See what happens.
