00:00Like, what was the game yesterday where you were like, damn, that was fun?
00:04The Jets game.
00:05I mean, right, but the Jets and Bengals.
00:07That was fun.
00:08Yeah, but whatever.
00:09And maybe it's because I've got a friend on the staff.
00:11Good for you, Jets.
00:13Go out there and get a win.
00:14They won a game.
00:15Two bad teams, but that game was at least kind of like fun and drunk and silly and crazy.
00:20Completely drunk.
00:2139 to 38.
00:22And the Jets won.
00:24Exactly.
00:24But to your point, like, if that's the high watermark, you had a bunch of beatdowns,
00:29and you had a Niner egg that got laid.
00:33But, yeah, it wasn't really a thrilling weekend.
00:36Like, Miami took Kirk Cousins apart.
00:39Buffalo throttled Carolina like you thought they would.
00:42And, yeah, other than that, it was kind of an ordinary Philly beats up the Giants, sure,
00:46and Scadaboo with another horrific ankle injury.
00:51So, yeah, not a great weekend.
00:52No, a lot of blowouts, a lot of, you know, that's kind of what we thought.
00:56Like, not a lot of surprises either.
00:58I guess what happened in Atlanta was a little bit surprising.
01:02Whoops.
01:03Atlanta probably should have traded Kirk Cousins when they had the chance.
01:07Last night was a little surprising in the way it turned.
01:10Yeah.
01:10Because I thought that Pittsburgh, they weren't in control.
01:13No, but they were doing well.
01:14And then all of a sudden they weren't.
01:15Yeah.
01:16And, you know, now Aaron Rodgers is on the sideline sulking and yelling at people.
01:21It's like, dude, really?
01:22And Pittsburgh had already said, we want him back.
01:25Do you?
01:26Do you now, Pittsburgh?
01:26I didn't think that was on Aaron at all.
01:28I mean, their defense was hot knife.
01:30Like, you know, and then they kept fumbling the ball.
01:33It wasn't on Aaron.
01:33Aaron didn't throw.
01:34He fumbled, yeah.
01:35No, he didn't.
01:36He didn't fumble.
01:37They called it a fumble and then they reviewed it and called.
01:39By the way, new favorite thing.
01:42And then we'll get to the Niners.
01:43New favorite thing is this Fakakta review thing that the refs are just doing on their own.
01:49New favorite thing.
01:51Stop making people huck red hankies onto the field when all of us with two eyes can see what the hell just happened.
01:58And there was one of them, and I think it was last night's game.
02:01Was it last night's game?
02:02We're like, the team had no time.
02:06They had no timeouts left.
02:07So you can't challenge.
02:09You can't challenge.
02:11But then the refs are like, we got it.
02:13We saw.
02:14And they called it the expedited review.
02:16Yep.
02:17It's also known as like cheating, basically.
02:20Well.
02:20Because it's like, well, when do you decide that I need to use my red hankie versus you're just going to go look on your own and see what happened?
02:29But either way, you know me.
02:31The more correct calls you can get, the better.
02:34So give me more.
02:36Expedited review.
02:37ER.
02:38Expedited review.
02:39No doubt.
02:39That's my ER.
02:40Yeah.
02:41Because we all want the calls to be right.
02:43Yes.
02:44And quick.
02:45Well, and the red hankie now is, you know, you don't really see it as much.
02:48Because now if there's a thing, it's the expedited review.
02:51Yeah.
02:52So turnovers and scoring plays are already reviewed.
02:54So it really comes down to like catch, no catch or line to gain and all those other things.
03:00So the challenge is becoming less and less of a thing.
03:04And that's kind of a good, a good thing.
03:05It is.
03:06Absolutely.
03:06But I'm with you.
03:07Anyway, what ticked you off about yesterday?
03:10Because I think that that's a more challenging question than is normal.
03:16When your team loses, we're mad.
03:18That's how we do it.
03:19But you sort of have to go, okay, what is it that's getting to you today?
03:24And I thought the defense, like I thought everything was awful.
03:28I thought that that was not a very watchable game.
03:31I didn't think anything or anyone was particularly impressive.
03:35Nothing really stood out.
03:36But the defense has my compassion.
03:40That's what I would say there.
03:42Like Houston's offensive line is terrible.
03:44You should be able to get after C.J. Stroud and don't think that yesterday now means that C.J. Stroud is all good again.
03:52He's not.
03:53He's an NFL quarterback.
03:54And if you give any NFL quarterback that kind of time, they're going to complete passes that by and large were seven or eight yards away from him.
04:02He can do that.
04:03And of course he can do that.
04:04But I have compassion for the defense because who are their good players?
04:08They're all gone.
04:10Who are their good players?
04:12If you want to be mad at something, it is the performance of the offensive line and the lack of planning that has led to it.
04:21To me, that's what you can be frustrated with as a 49er fan because that's the thing, especially you're a run-first team and now you're a team with a backup quarterback.
04:35And even when you've got your starting quarterback, his name's not Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes.
04:40Like you have to perform really well at the offensive line.
04:45When everyone looks back on the Niners of the 80s, you hear names like Montana and Rice and all of that.
04:52But Ronnie Lott.
04:53But the bottom line is, dude, the offensive line, they were awesome.
04:57They were awesome every year.
04:59Randy Cross, Jim Stuckey, Sapolu.
05:01Like they were a great offensive line.
05:04Therefore, dot, dot, dot, you have great offenses.
05:07That's how it works.
05:08And they know this.
05:09And if they think they can sort of get that production for less of an investment, I'm willing to listen.
05:16But then you better do it.
05:18You better do it.
05:19And it does not appear that they did it.
05:21And then the things that they thought they could count on, Trent Williams and Dominic Pune are not performing at a high enough level either.
05:29And so this is what you're going to get.
05:31You're going to get some weeks it looks kind of okay and some weeks it looks awful.
05:35That's what you're going to get.
05:36That's right.
05:37And when you look at Colton McKivitts and just watching the game again today for a second and parts of the game a third time, he had a really, really tough time.
05:45And he's facing Will Anderson, who is an all-pro.
05:48He's an unbelievable player.
05:50But I was watching a lot of the plays, and I can't wait to talk to Greg Cosell on Wednesday and John Feliciano tomorrow.
05:57Looked to me like they were trying to do too much.
05:59So you've got a backup center, Matt Hennessey, and you're asking him on multiple plays to snap and go out and basically block McKivitts' guy.
06:09The line's going to shift left, and you're going to have the center snap and go, and he doesn't get out there and get the guy.
06:14You had Jawan Jennings miss blocks.
06:16You had McKivitts miss multiple blocks.
06:17And by and large, I thought they were trying to do a little bit too much on offense.
06:23And, you know, you look at the first half, as you talked about, you open up with an illegal formation,
06:28and then you get Jawan Jennings with a face mask on a play where you don't need to, like, put your hands on a guy's face mask.
06:36You've got Mack Jones running to the sideline anyway, and then that sets you back.
06:40And they never got anything really going on the ground or in the air.
06:44And when you tried to pass protect, you didn't really have the time to throw.
06:48Nope.
06:48Nope.
06:49There are a bunch of plays where Mack is doing a simple three-step drop, and they still couldn't even get the ball off.
06:55They couldn't even get it off.
06:56So, like, you know, would Brock Purdy have helped yesterday because of his mobility?
07:01Probably.
07:02Would he have helped enough?
07:04I don't know.
07:04Probably not.
07:06You know what I mean?
07:06Like, the word you constantly use is complimentary, and these things are all, it's one chain-link fence around the entire field.
07:16And if basically you're getting poor offensive line play, you're getting a game script that gets all screwed up to the point where you don't even attempt to run the ball.
07:26Eight carries for this game.
07:28Don't tell me ten, because when Mack Jones runs, that's not the plan.
07:32So, eight times.
07:34The only good news that came out of yesterday is you finally got your game where Christian's touches went down.
07:40What did he have, 11?
07:42Something like that, yeah.
07:4211 touches.
07:43There.
07:43Can everybody calm down now?
07:46Christian got 11 touches.
07:48So, he's not on pace for 480 touches anymore.
07:52Sweet.
07:53So, that's over.
07:54Now, let's move on to the next thing, which is, yeah, when your game script gets all screwed up, you're not really able to function.
08:03And so, you can't run the ball, and that allows an elite pass rush to tee off, and you can't block them.
08:09And your quarterback is immobile to start, but his leg also hurts.
08:13So, now he's even more immobile.
08:15You don't have your good receivers.
08:17Kyle doesn't call a game plan that calls for very quick passing, and even if he did, the Texans know that.
08:24And their secondary's good, and they're waiting for it.
08:27And you make penalties, you drop balls, you get off the field, and you put your young defense with no good players on it in a situation where they're exhausted and on the field for the whole first half.
08:39You can't play that way.
08:41Flat out.
08:42I don't care who.
08:43You can get mad at any individual.
08:45You can't play football that way.
08:48So, that's why yesterday went the way that it went.
08:50Well, yet and still, you score a touchdown to cut it to eight, late third, and you're in a spot where you can still somehow find a way to steal this thing, and you hold the Texans to three, and now you've got a possession where, okay, you're down 26-15.
09:05You've got about ten minutes left.
09:07Go down there and do something.
09:09And this game still is live.
09:10And then it's the toss, and we'll get into it more with Grandy's Grades tomorrow because of all the plays, they threw that backward pass to McCaffrey, and he loses five on first down.
09:22And then you check it down to juice, and then your boy Watkins with the drop.
09:26And then now you're punting three and out.
09:28Like, you're down 11, and you've got to go three and out.
09:31That, to me, was maybe the biggest blow.
09:34The other one was on the deep throw to Juwan.
09:37If you look back at that play, they did what they call max protect, where you kept everybody in.
09:43You had seven guys blocking, and you're quarterback, so you have three guys in the pattern.
09:47That way you can give him time.
09:49Mack Jones has time.
09:50Juwan is open, and he throws it deep, and it's a beautiful ball.
09:54And Juwan doesn't catch it.
09:56He drops it.
09:56And I know you eventually scored in that drive, but that, to me, is like the point of frustration where you finally built it up to where you could protect Jones.
10:04You did.
10:05And Juwan got open on the deep go route down the middle, and the throw was there, and you still couldn't convert.
