Who Doug and Gator want most in NFL free agency.
Transcript
00:00To be fair, we're in a really weird spot in that our jobs are to talk about what we would
00:06do and predict what the Lions might do and try and lean into the free agent market.
00:15We have no clue what their budget is.
00:18None.
00:19Until they announce any kind of roster restructure, which they're going to do, then we'll have a sense for where
00:26they fit in terms of their bank.
00:30Compared to everybody else's bank, so we can gauge what is realistic.
00:35I guess, Scott, I'm in a place where I'm tempted to say they can afford Linderbaum until I know they
00:42can't.
00:44And if you missed the first hour, I mentioned that Justin Rogers did a really good job of breaking down
00:51how golf's contract could be converted to a bonus.
00:56He could he could they could drop him down to the veterans minimum of one point three million and the
01:02other fifty three point seven would be given up front for a bonus.
01:05And that bonus would be divided evenly over the four remaining years, which means it's split up by thirteen million
01:11dollars a year, which means it would free up forty point three million this year, which I am in favor
01:16of.
01:17So I got to get a bunch of money up front and this is how these things work, but that
01:21would put them in a far more advantageous position.
01:24But anyway, with that said, who are you?
01:28Well, who are you lying?
01:29Yeah, go for it.
01:30The two guys I'm looking at first one on offense, one on defense, the offensive tackle.
01:35I just I really locked into the Dedrick Wills idea that this is an offensive tackle, that there's a little
01:41bit of a risk, but I don't think that the price is going to be coming in too high for
01:45a guy who's missed some time with with knee injuries that ended two seasons in a row for me sat
01:51out all of last season to get healthy.
01:54And by recent reporting, he was visiting with the Lions last week, visit with the Patriots, and he's going to
02:01visit some other teams.
02:02But that's somebody who I think you can get probably on a cheap, whether it's a one year prove it
02:07deal or if it's a, you know, a shorter term, probably cheap deal anyway.
02:12I looked there, but the one that on the defensive side is for the defensive end position, the pass rusher.
02:22I want Cam Jordan.
02:23Yeah.
02:24Cam Jordan's a guy who brings a ton of experience.
02:27He's 36 years old, which normally people say, well, forget it.
02:30I don't want it.
02:30Well, he's still productive.
02:32He had 10 and a half sacks last year with New Orleans.
02:36He's got 132 in his career.
02:39To my knowledge, he has not missed a single game in his NFL career.
02:43No, he has been incredibly durable during this time.
02:47And your availability is sometimes your best ability to have.
02:51And for a guy that is as productive as he has been in his career, that can lace him up
02:57every week, that's somebody who I'd like to take a look at on this team.
03:01And I don't think he's somebody who's going to cost you in double digit million dollars.
03:06This is like a one year, hey, come work with Dan Campbell.
03:09You played at New Orleans when Dan Campbell was there.
03:13He knows who you are and Cam Jordan's one of the great guys in the NFL, great character guy, and
03:20I think would fit in perfectly with this team.
03:24He was a player that I was kind of hoping they may go after at the trade deadline.
03:28Didn't happen.
03:29Now he's available in free agency.
03:32I'd like to see it.
03:33I don't think he's going to call it a career yet.
03:34He's got some more left on the tank, clearly by the 10 and a half sack season last year.
03:39Let's bring him here to Detroit and let's do it on a one year deal.
03:42He's a good run defender to go with it.
03:45I think he totally fits the Lions profile and this is going through some, some market projections.
03:52It's not going to cost that much and he's not going to get a long-term deal.
03:56And so as far as I'm concerned, I think he fits exactly what they need when you fact all things
04:06considered, like you could probably go get better players and they would cost a ton more money.
04:13And this guy's doesn't come with great risk.
04:16He stays healthy.
04:17I think there's two veteran edge rushers that are affordable that are still making plays.
04:24Number one, though, the number one guy would indeed be Jordan.
04:28Number two would be Calais Campbell.
04:30I think fits their profile as well as an older, cheaper veteran that could be revitalized coming to Detroit with
04:37a chance to, you know, compete at the highest level.
04:41And Scott, so I couldn't agree with you more on that.
04:44I think it makes all the sense in the world.
04:47And yeah, it's not going to, it's not going to cost much.
04:51Right.
04:51I mean, the athletic had a one year, $8 million and that works.
04:56And his familiarity with him from Campbell's time in New Orleans and, you know, just seems to make all the
05:03sense in the world.
05:03Right.
05:04Absolutely.
05:06And that being said, I think we both wouldn't mind if they went out and got Linderbaum, but I don't
05:11expect it.
05:12I'd love to hear that they're in on the bidding for him.
05:15But again, that's going to be a big ticket item, but it's a big ticket item based on his position.
05:21It's not a big ticket item necessarily in terms of overall money.
05:25He'd set the market for the center position, but he costs less than a receiver does.
05:30I mean, you're talking about in the neighborhood of 20 million a year over three, four years, you know, it'd
05:36be, it'd be a hefty price.
05:37But again, with the golf restructure and other things they need to do, I feel like they could afford it,
05:43but not much more than that.
05:46Cause you still have to fill out a roster and they still would need probably a veteran safety, veteran tight
05:50end that need to be found in free agency along with, you know, edge rusher.
05:57And, you know, if you, if you, let's say we went with these deals and Linderbaum and the athletic is
06:03four years, 78 million.
06:05So you're looking at what is that would be 19 and a half million, 19 and a half million for
06:09Linderbaum, eight more million for Cam Jordan.
06:12So it takes you to 27 and a half million. And now you've got like 13 million to fill out
06:16the rest.
06:16You're going to have to spread a pretty thin, uh, to fit under the cap.
06:20But I like the way you're thinking, Scott. And, um, you know, that, that would be a great starting point
06:27for a strong off season.
06:29Now I feel like we've been primed not to expect, like we're being prepared.
06:34Now a lot of insiders don't think they're going to do make a big deal.
06:38So, and I understand it. It's not really been in Brad Holmes DNA to do that.
06:46He really focuses on the draft, but he also tries to fill needs and free agency.
06:51So, well, he go big at one position. If he does, my God, I feel so much better about the
06:57lions.
06:57If they did go get Linderbaum and I'd feel like, boom, sweepstakes, they hit the jackpot with that signing.
07:03That's just the, again, if they could afford it, he's a, he's exactly what they need, right?
07:09Exactly what they need.
07:10Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
07:13Free agency gets underway at noon.
07:15We'll start to hear reports.
07:16There was movement today that we will discuss at 1120 here on Carson Anderson on 97.1.
07:23Do you think that we're going to hear something about the lions in the first 20 minutes or half hour
07:28of, uh, you know, by 1230, think we'll hear something?
07:31No. Do you?
07:35My head tells me absolutely not. Right. Because that's not what Brad Holmes has done.
07:42My gut tells her we're going to hear something, although I'm not sure it's going to be necessarily a free
07:46agent front.
07:46I think it might just be restructuring front.
07:49And why, why, why is that?
07:51I don't know. I just think we have to hear something.
07:53Is this a hunch?
07:54It's more of a hunch.
07:55Okay.
07:56But going into the start of the NFL year or the, whatever the, I forgot how they phrase that, but
08:03they're the start of the NFL season, which is not the first game of the season, but their actual fiscal
08:08year, uh, when things have to get going, it's in a couple of days.
08:13They have got to get compliant with the cap.
08:16And right now they are not two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97, Mike and Davidson.
08:21You're on 97 one.
08:22Good morning, Mike.
08:24Hey, good morning.
08:25What's up.
08:26Yeah.
08:26I just wanted to call in a champion chump.
08:28I'm going to, uh, champ, uh, Jeremy fears.
08:31And, um, you've already got a couple of calls just saying what I think is ridiculous things.
08:37Uh, there's, it's easy to pile on.
08:40Um, um, if you saw the Tom Izzo, uh, press kind of, and while I was watching the game, if
08:46you're, if you get pushed in the back, he got fouled.
08:49If you get pushed in the back and your, your feet aren't perfectly even or parallel, that's exactly what's going
08:56to happen.
08:57If you're leaning forward, that foot's going to go up.
08:59If you get pushed in the back.
09:01So for Gene Steratore to come on there and say, that's not a natural act, it's only because of, of
09:07this happening before.
09:09And now he's getting some kind of reputation.
09:11And then Izzo yelled at him, tore him a new one.
09:13And that's why Jeremy fears, he took his medicine and he put the blame on him and himself as the
09:19leader of the team.
09:20And that's why after the game, he said, yeah, that, that can't happen.
09:23I made a mistake.
09:24That was only because Izzo told him, you bet, you know, that you better not do anything.
09:29And, and then right after that, he got fouled twice right after that.
09:33He was, he came, he drove to the basket and Cadeau slammed him again.
09:38Well, hit his arm.
09:39It definitely got his wrist.
09:41There was no call.
09:42And then there was a body contact and then, and then play after that.
09:46No, he's not getting any of these calls now.
09:49And then it's the second half.
09:50He started getting his calls because he's great at drawing fouls.
09:54And so, yeah, that's, that's sad.
09:56And those people calling in, they, you know, talking about Izzo.
09:59Do you think he's going to hurt MSU, Mike?
10:02Do you think fears his play is going to, and his reputation and his earning is going to hurt Michigan
10:05State in the tournament?
10:07But it's, it's not an earned reputation.
10:09It is an earned reputation.
10:10It is an earned, I'm a proud Spartan.
10:13Especially against Michigan.
10:14Mike, I'm a proud Spartan.
10:15It's an earned reputation.
10:16If we can just agree to that.
10:18Do you think it's going to affect Michigan State?
10:20No, it's not an earned reputation.
10:21It's a fault.
10:22I don't know what you're watching.
10:23You said that in the press conference.
10:24Izzo disagrees with you, Scott.
10:26Well, then I disagree with Izzo.
10:27Because I think it's ridiculous to think that what he did yesterday with a mule kick isn't unfair.
10:32Yeah, then you know what?
10:33If I got pushed in the back, I'm going to fall forward.
10:35My foot is not going to lift up to my waist.
10:39Don't make the excuse for it.
10:41Don't buy into it.
10:42It's not worth it.
10:43It just, I, as a Spartan, accept it.
10:45I think he's a dirty player.
10:46I think he's a hell of a player.
10:48Michigan State wouldn't be where they're at today if they didn't have Jeremy Fears.
10:51I just wish that he wasn't lifting that leg up so damn high because it gets pushed off balance.
10:59I'm not buying it.
11:00Sorry.
11:0197-1.
