00:05good morning 97.1 getting you started on a monday open the show talking tournament where is
00:11cinderella how about the big 10 we'll check in with the wolverines and the spartans collision
00:16courses still on both into the sweet 16 7 o'clock hour chance to win red wing tickets
00:22not in the playoffs right now big game tuesday against ottawa
00:26john we were warned by dave burkett and it's being confirmed by justin rogers these are guys
00:32plugged into the lions beat justin rogers says the heavy lifting is likely done for the lions in free
00:40agency they've only signed one player that's cade mays to more than a one-year deal he obviously
00:49signed a three-year deal everyone else one-year deals and tell me one guy that they've signed
00:56that on those one-year deals that isn't just that we believe is a depth piece versus an impact
01:06gotta have it starter have they signed a starter on defense mccreary maybe maybe and i like that move
01:15sure and i'm not going to sit here and poo-poo any of their their signings but if that's all
01:22they do
01:22then i will go and poo-poo poo-poo away i can't believe i just said that and a doo
01:30-doo all over this
01:31free agency right it's just again they so we knew that they needed to sign some depth pieces especially
01:38after anzalone's gone uh al-kwadi muhammad you go right down the list of all the guys that have signed
01:43somewhere else yes they wanted to get younger okay they're accomplishing that and the but if
01:47they're done then they're only going to get younger because the only guys that they're going to add to
01:52the roster are in the draft can we say they failed free agency yes and i hate to say that
02:00because
02:02i i they're still a good team but they're not doing anything to get markedly better
02:13to address the deficiencies that we've seen over the last couple of years not just this past year
02:19but over the last couple of years what has been the the shining star of this team
02:25the offense yeah and two years ago it was everything about the offense you could run the ball
02:31when you wanted to everybody talks about a balanced attack and it doesn't have to be a 50 percent pass
02:3650
02:36a balanced attack means you dictate what you want to do when you got to run the ball you're able
02:43to
02:43when you got to pass the ball you're able to last year yeah they could pass the ball but when
02:48they had
02:48to have the run it wasn't there now they've addressed the center position with k base defensively
02:55they haven't addressed anything center was the biggest need they addressed it we like the player we
03:01think it'll help them out and especially in the interior that offensive line and running the ball and
03:04keeping golf upright that wasn't the only goal of free agency you got to make your defense more
03:10formidable at all three levels and i don't have an issue with any individual player they've signed
03:15but the goal was to get better on defense and john i don't think they're any better on defense
03:21no you could make the argument that they're worse so free agency is where you're supposed to
03:26address starters because the draft is where you take the best player available right that's what
03:29brad always tells us so in free agency you got to get starters plural maybe roger mccreary is is the
03:35starter at nickel corner if they're going to play more nickel that's it everything else is depth on
03:41defense every other move on the roster has been depth right it's pacheco for montgomery it's boreham
03:47for skipper it's izzy in as a depth piece it's um who's the defensive end dj warnham we think more
03:55of a depth piece replacing davenport yes he's not replacing al-kadi muhammad and if he is they still
04:03needed to get a starter over there those were rotational pieces on the defensive end you get
04:09my point so can we say they failed free agency if the heavy lifting's done yeah they failed free
04:13agency they got a center and then that's about it everything else is backups in depth and they have
04:20a purpose and a place on a football team but for a team that finished in last place you wanted
04:25to see
04:25starters plural and specifically multiple dudes on that defense the frustrating part is there were guys
04:34available still guys available that aren't going to cost you an arm and a leg and they fit the
04:41parameters of one year deals but they seem to refuse to go out there and sign those guys
04:48and so i'm just not even sure so what it tells me is kirby joseph they must not be that
04:57concerned
04:57about his injury because if they're not going to have brian branch to start the season you better have
05:04kirby joseph yeah and if you don't have either of those guys at least not a reliable kirby joseph
05:09what are you even doing at the safety position yeah is he in
05:14okay i know that's my point then what are you doing without amic robertson you got mccrary
05:22okay and and so again it's just there are so many holes in the defense that if if if if
05:31we believe
05:32that their plan is to go out and get an offensive tackle in the first round sure does feel that
05:38way
05:39an edge in the second yeah they're doing something they have rarely done pigeonhole themselves into
05:45specific needs in the draft what it also tells me is all that draft capital they've got nine picks
05:52yeah we just talked about two of them those seven other picks have to be
05:59chips that they're going to play to move up in the draft to take less players but more high quality
06:07players so that you can fill in a safety that you can go out there and get you a linebacker
06:13to play
06:13next to jack campbell jack campbell's only one guy he can't play both spots and rodrigo to me is i
06:19know
06:19that there was this great we love the fact that he started as a rookie this team is supposed to
06:24be
06:24beyond that how are they going to get well they're putting a lot of eggs in rookies in the rookie
06:32basket yeah i'm fine with starting a rookie tackle that you're going to use the first round pick on
06:38do i think i'm fixing the defense with seconds fourths fifths six even creative trades i'm i'm gonna go
06:46with rookies to to win the super bowl see this is where you get concerned correct well so let me
06:53let me ask you this would okay this is it take the super bowl this year out of the equation
07:00i don't
07:00want to okay but we'll just indulge me for a second if this is the year where there's going to
07:10be some
07:10guys on defense that are going to have to show improvement and develop that is rookies would
07:18you look at the draft and say well the draft was a success if you took your starting offensive tackle
07:23in the first round and you took a and a starting edge and a starting safety yes in the second
07:30round
07:30yes i think look they can still win the draft but they failed free agency oh there's no question and
07:37and
07:37to now say i don't want to take the super bowl off the table to say you're going to john
07:42i think
07:42they'll win more games next year i really do maybe lions fans are so hard on this team they don't
07:47see
07:47it they're gonna play a last play schedule they're gonna win a couple more games i think they're gonna
07:51be in the playoffs but are they good enough to win a super bowl that's what you're supposed to do
07:56look
07:56who won the super bowl last year look who played in the super bowl last year free agency
08:00is a valuable tool if you are going to scoff at it you fail it you're gonna make it that
08:08much harder
08:09because now john my left tackle or right tackle whoever they draft has to be a super bowl caliber
08:14player my edge my edge in the second round has to be an impact player to chase down a super
08:20bowl
08:20that's how they pigeonhole themselves and if you look at dan from it look at this roster from dan
08:27campbell's perspective can you imagine going into a season and he's talked about spending more time
08:32with the defense can you imagine kelvin shepherd going into a second year where there were already
08:36we were already complaining about the defense in the first year he is a second year play caller on
08:40defense and he's going to have to go into this season with multiple rookies as his starters
08:47dan campbell with these clear holes to fill now hey thank you for going out and getting us the third
08:52best center on the market maybe the fourth best after tyler beadich became available
08:58and you're going into this season with your job your reputation as a head coach partially on the
09:06line now if they if they fumble things are we sitting there we won't probably be calling for dan's job
09:12but we've already had fans do that same thing with brad holmes but he's got to be furious with the
09:19fact
09:19that they haven't gone out and and fortified this roster with experience with proven talent who's the
09:28cade maze for the defense that's my biggest gripe right now individual small moves yes i could make the
09:34case that all of them are fine enough players and good enough deals for the roles they're going to
09:37play where's the cade maze for your defense and if i if i'm dan campbell i might be asking that
09:41same
09:41question we'll take phone calls next we have some audio mike valeni dropping some tidbits from people
09:47that he's talked to dan campbell and brad holmes might not be on the same page right now it's 97
09:52one
