Do the Red Wings still need to make another word?
Transcript
00:00Have our teams ruined the trade deadline? Are you excited for what the Wings could do today, or are you
00:06dreading prices are too high, couldn't make a deal, Steve Iserman?
00:102-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
00:14Get to the phones, Matt and Graham Blank. Matt, good morning.
00:17Hey, good morning, guys. Good show.
00:19Thanks.
00:21So, shame on Iserman if he does not make a move, because he ate from the tree that bore really
00:28good fruits back when he played.
00:30All those trades, Hall, Shanahan, Chelios, he was getting the crap beat out of him, and Illich made those trades,
00:37and all of a sudden he's protected, and they're winning cups.
00:40So he's lived it. He knows what happens when you make really good trades.
00:44And I don't know what his problem is, that he is so stubborn that he doesn't see what he actually
00:51experienced as a player.
00:54That's a great point.
00:55And, like, I can't question him as a competitor, because I watched him skate with the C on his sweater
01:01for years and know how competitive he is.
01:03At the same time, I want to see that bleed over to when you're in the race, you're in the
01:08hunt, the competitive juices are flowing, deals are being made, the guy next to you is getting better, are you
01:14getting better?
01:14And the answer is often, well, I have a responsibility to the organization, and I'm not going to do things
01:19that are going to hurt us long term.
01:21Meanwhile, they're just kind of treading water, just staying afloat where they are.
01:26John, I don't have a great deal of confidence they're going to make the playoffs.
01:29They're in right now. They're going to be gripping the wheel to the finish.
01:31I'd like to get a little more confidence by adding today at the deadline.
01:36Yeah, you want to increase your odds, increase your chances.
01:38You know who's saying the same thing? Lucas Raymond in the locker room yesterday.
01:42You know who said the same thing last year? Dylan Larkin.
01:45You know who said the same thing? Todd McClellan on our radio show who said we've done enough to be
01:49buyers.
01:50And then he said, comma, the prices have to make sense.
01:52But the prices are what they are. Either you're going to make a move or you're not going to make
01:56a move.
01:56Well, Eddie, also, I still think that the last time we talked about some of the things that he had
02:02to say after games,
02:04we got guys out there that are just wearing jerseys.
02:07They're skating around in jerseys. They're not contributing.
02:09Like, I think that was also a message to Steve Iserman.
02:13Have deadlines been ruined by our teams?
02:15John points out, hey, Brad, did get Zedarius, but we're talking about October of 2024.
02:19Is the last time you felt genuinely pumped up about our teams at the deadline?
02:24And today, I will stress, is supposed to be fun.
02:27This texter says, I'm still waiting for another Austin Jackson Detroit sports trade moment.
02:33He says, I remember watching the game with bated breath, hoping to see the Tigers get better.
02:37And, like magic, Austin Jackson leaves game mid-game.
02:42David Price arrives in Detroit.
02:45That's Nick in Toledo.
02:47There was a high that day because the A's went out and added a pitcher.
02:51And I can't remember who it was, but Carson Anderson are at gate A.
02:55And they're talking about what the A's did.
02:58And how can the Tigers keep up in this race to not only make the playoffs, but chase a World
03:03Series, right?
03:04It's Mr. Illich and World Series or bust.
03:07And we're constantly looking for little tidbits and clues and crumbs because our team's going to do something big.
03:13And it happens mid-game, and it's the biggest, best pitcher on the market.
03:17But that's more than a decade ago, John.
03:21And everyone can see, I mean, what's right in front of them.
03:27And you're looking at the standings.
03:30And you're saying, who has already gotten better?
03:34And a team that is only three points better than you in Buffalo has pushed their chips to the center
03:41of the table.
03:42So they traded for Pareko, but then he put the halt on it.
03:46But what did they do?
03:46They didn't take no for an answer.
03:47They went out and traded for two more defensemen.
03:49Right.
03:50And so you're a team.
03:52Now, ultimately, do they catch?
03:54I don't know.
03:54Buffalo?
03:55We don't know.
03:56I mean, Buffalo is in a better position right now as a team and in terms of the standings.
04:01But you could also narrow the gap today.
04:05Right.
04:06Text coming in.
04:07Guys, good morning.
04:08I find these deadlines to be an exercise in frustration.
04:10I'm no longer excited.
04:12I don't understand how all four of our teams have improved, which is good.
04:15But none of the general managers seem to have an urgency to bump it one more level.
04:19Complacency is driving me crazy.
04:21The Pistons last night is another example.
04:23That's Jerome in Redford.
04:26Jim, you're disappointed because your expectations are so high and usually unrealistic.
04:33Like, I mean, to some that may sound that way, I don't feel like the Red Wings have to go
04:38out and trade for Robert Thomas and give up multiple firsts and got their their AHL roster.
04:44I've asked for a couple blue liners that would be here beyond this season and maybe a center
04:51who played it for the Plymouth Whalers and has a connection to the area.
04:54Like, I don't think I've set an unrealistic bar for this deadline.
04:58I also didn't say, like, if you don't get Giannis, we're burning the city down for the Pistons.
05:02I think we try to set a realistic bar.
05:05Are we not?
05:05Are we not doing that?
05:06Well, and all of the players that we have highlighted, whether it's Falk or it's Trocek or it's
05:15Rusta Linen.
05:16Yeah.
05:17They all fit easily under the cap.
05:19Right.
05:20They don't have to worry about retaining salaries or, you know, jumping through hoops or matching
05:25or squeezing a dollar out of a stone.
05:27Nothing like that.
05:28It really all comes down to what are you?
05:31What is Steve Iserman willing to part ways with?
05:34Right.
05:35Draft picks or prospects?
05:37I said it in passing.
05:39Or both.
05:39It could be both, depending on the player.
05:41To Carson Anderson yesterday.
05:43It's a pain tolerance thing, right?
05:44There's got it.
05:45You got to give to get.
05:46There's going to be some pain when you make a deal.
05:48You got to have a pain tolerance when it comes to this time of year.
05:52Tech says, no, you've ruined the deadline, Jim.
05:56It's my fault.
05:57Jim, you're a fun guy to be around.
05:59No joy.
05:59I'm not stealing your joy.
06:00I'm asking if you have it today.
06:02I don't.
06:03I can only speak for myself.
06:06You excited about what the wings are going to do today?
06:08Are you dreading it?
06:09I would really like them to add.
06:11Me too.
06:12I think that this is a team that will get into the postseason.
06:17Even if they don't.
06:20Five points up.
06:2120 games to go.
06:23Right.
06:23But it's also when I say that.
06:25If they don't.
06:27My expectations are that they're a first round exit.
06:30Oh, yeah.
06:31I'm not under any delusions.
06:32If they do.
06:34They may still be a first round exit.
06:36But I think there's a better chance that you could extend the season a little bit more.
06:41And if you add a guy like Falk, who's could be here for a couple of years, then what are
06:46you doing in free?
06:47Like it adds excitement, not just for this year, but it adds excitement for the future.
06:52Great point.
06:53And the dynamics in the NHL more than any other sport.
06:56Rarely do we see big time free agents hit free agency.
06:59So it's why if you added a player now who would also be here next year.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Certainly has some value.
07:06I mean, it's it's not about something to be excited about this year and the years to
07:11come.
07:11And then as soon as the season's over, we'll start talking about free agency and maybe
07:20even next year's trade deadline.
07:21It's almost like sports fans want to talk about making their team better.
07:24Huh?
07:24Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
07:27Some more response coming in.
07:29It says, guys, how many teams even make a trade during the deadline?
07:32A handful.
07:32You're acting like every team makes four or five moves.
07:35No, but I mean, shorthand, John brought up Buffalo's made a couple moves.
07:39Stars have added a couple players.
07:41Oilers, ducks, and abs have all traded first round picks.
07:44I mean, teams make moves.
07:46We're just not in this city.
07:48Not anymore.
07:49It's 97 one.
