00:00A major win for abortion rights in two Republican-dominated states.
00:04The latest attempts to ban most abortions failed, and conservative lawmakers helped stand in the way.
00:11We are following these major developing stories and many more, all coming in right here to CNN News Central.
00:17There is another development today we want to tell you about in the fight over abortion rights
00:22that we are seeing play out across the country.
00:24Two bills in two different states, both almost completely banning abortion,
00:28and both of those moves failed, and both were in Republican-led states.
00:33Take Nebraska, for one.
00:34Some people seemed moved to tears, as you can see in this video here from State Senator Megan Hunt.
00:39After what was being called the Heartbeat Act, it failed a critical test vote in the state legislature.
00:47That bill would have banned most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy.
00:51And then in South Carolina, the five women in the state Senate, three of whom are Republicans there,
00:57they joined together to filibuster a near-total ban of abortion there.
01:01CNN's Diane Gallagher is tracking all of these moves for us.
01:04She's joining us right now.
01:05Dan, what more can you tell us about what happened in South Carolina last night and where this now heads?
01:12So, Kate, this isn't the first time that the—
01:14All right, John, joining us now for more on this is CNN legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Elliot Williams.
01:20So, Elliot, we do not know what was asked or what was said in that room.
01:23He testified for five hours.
01:25But if you were in the room, what are the most pressing questions you would ask?
01:28What can Pence provide?
01:31Mike Pence did have a partial win, if you will, in terms of when he was appealing and what he
01:37would testify to.
01:38The judge overseeing the grand jury ruled he would not have to talk about matters that are linked to his
01:44role as being president of the Senate on January 6th.
01:47So then, what line of questioning was then off-limits in that room yesterday?
01:52Sure.
01:53Well, in court.
01:54Yeah, absolutely.
01:55So, this is unprecedented.
01:57This is the first time in modern history a vice president's been compelled to testify about the president he has
02:02served with.
02:02I'm sure you have kind of wondered this, and it's unknowable in this exact moment, you know, give us some
02:08more time and some more history to really see if this has had an impact.
02:12But do you think this move now, this precedent that this now sets, that this somehow changes the role of
02:19a vice president or changes the relationship between a VP and a president going forward?
02:24I don't think it does.
02:26Welcome back to CNN News Central.
02:28We are closely tracking this hour, the deadly new attack in Ukraine.
02:33It's truly devastating, the images coming out.
02:35And now it is a desperate search for survivors amid the rubble.
02:39So far, we know that at least 17 people are dead after a Russian missile hit a residential building in
02:47the central city of Uman.
02:48And we are being told the death toll is likely to continue to rise as we speak.
02:52This all happened just before 5 a.m. local time.
02:56So many of these people asleep in bed.
02:58According to the Zelensky government, there were 46 apartments in that building and 27 of them now destroyed.
03:06The CNN team on the ground is seeing bodies being removed from this decimated residential building.
03:13We saw it playing out live, unfortunately, as Nick Robertson was speaking to John Berman just earlier this hour.
03:18Sarah.
03:19Brown, this is something that I know you're going to enjoy.
03:21It does not involve a black hole, but it does involve a historic spacewalk.
03:25I'm actually serious.
03:26Stay here.
03:27Look right here.
03:28I believe, guys, tell me if these are still live pictures.
03:30These are playback.
03:30But I believe these are live pictures from, I mean, kind of is given from space, from outside the International
03:37Space Station.
03:38But it's one of those two amazing men.
03:40Al-Niadi is the first Arab astronaut to perform a spacewalk.
03:44The mission is expected to last about six and a half hours.
03:48We're going to be bringing you updates throughout.
03:50The other one would be Al-Niadi.
03:51It's so cool to see.
03:54It's so cool.
03:56We kicked John out because I wanted to see.
03:58When I said John, stick around, I actually meant please leave and please, Sarah, show up.
04:02Yeah, that's what I, I really do.
04:02Oh, you're still here?
04:03Oh, we're live?
04:04Oh.
04:05Yeah, sorry.
04:06Oh.
04:06Take it, Sarah.
04:07Night one, round one of the NFL draft is a wrap.
04:11And it delivered on the hype and all the buildup to that big event in Kansas City.
04:15For the fourth time ever, three quarterbacks were chosen in the first four picks.
04:20Alabama's QB, Bryce Young, he went number one to the Carolina Panthers.
04:24And he is now the first Alabama player to go first overall.
04:28CNN's Coy Wire, live in Kansas City with much more on this.
04:31Coy, as the New York Times put it, and I really, this kind of summed it up for me.
04:36After a handful of by-the-book selections, the draft settled into a familiar state of unpredictability.
04:42What happened last night, and what's the deal with Will Levis?
04:48Yeah, absolutely.
04:49Poor Will.
04:50We'll get to him in a minute.
04:51Okay, we have to start with Bryce Young from Alabama, one of the most humble stars.
04:54Russian missile strikes across Ukraine, targeting innocent civilians and apartment buildings.
04:59At least 21 people have been killed so far.
05:02Our teams on the ground are seeing crews pulling bodies from the rubble.
05:05The urgent search for survivors this hour.
05:08CNN's on the scene in central Ukraine.
05:11New images are coming out of central Ukraine this morning, and they break your heart.
05:17The devastation left behind by a Russian missile attack, that's part of a wave of attacks that we are seeing.
05:23You can see just the pieces of concrete hanging off of this building.
05:26Look at how many crews are on the ground.
05:28You see the smoke in the air, the heavy equipment, all in a desperate search to try to find anyone
05:34alive and to help them.
05:35This is an apartment building in Uman.
05:38This is not a military installation.
05:40An apartment building, a residential building.
05:43Since the attack, it's been an all-out race against the clock as rescues are trying to find survivors.
05:47But over the last few hours, they have pulled out body after body from the rubble.
05:52At least 19 civilians have been killed in Uman.
05:55And this is just part of a barrage of missiles that hit several cities.
05:59A woman and her two-year-old child killed in Dnepro overnight.
06:03Missiles and drones also were shot down over Kyiv.
06:07CNN's Nick Payton Walsh, he's tracking this story from Zaporizia.
06:10First, we want to get to CNN's Nick Robertson, who's on the ground in Uman,
06:14where we've been seeing these bodies coming out right in front of that residential building right where you are.
06:19Nick, what's the very latest you're seeing?
06:24Ahead for us, a new warning for Americans still in Sudan.
06:28The U.S. government telling them to get out of the country now.
06:32Plus, a train derails right into the Mississippi River.
06:36Four people were hurt here.
06:37A big question now is whether the hazardous material on board could affect the water.
06:42And a groundbreaking moment at the International Space Station.
06:45The historic achievement.
06:47Hi.
06:48Hi.
07:02To get that free ride.
07:03It's so good.
07:04All right.
07:04Thank you, Sarah.
07:05Still ahead, the countdown to King Charles' coronation, and CNN is there.
07:09A new look at King Charles and the challenge ahead for the monarchy and what the British people really think
07:14of the new king.
07:15Plus, scary moments as people are rushing to evacuate Sudan.
07:19A Turkish plane was shot at as it was trying to land in Khartoum.
07:23Details on that ahead.
07:30Crisis in Sudan, where the latest ceasefire is very clearly not holding.
07:34Take a look at this video from the capital, Khartoum.
07:36You can very obviously see smoke rising in the distance from airstrikes.
07:40Even evacuations are now being targeted.
07:43New photos show a bullet hole in a Turkish Airlines plane, a Turkish plane, that was shot while trying to
07:51get citizens out.
07:52The plane was able to land safely, thankfully.
07:54This latest incident, though, really highlights the dangers of not only getting out of Sudan yourself, but even trying to
08:01help get people out of the country.
08:03American teacher Deanna Welker is sharing her harrowing story of getting out, how she was able to get from Khartoum
08:10back to North Carolina.
08:12Before she left, she took this video of the smoke you can see from outside.
08:16That's from outside her apartment building.
08:18She also recorded the sounds of loud gunfire and explosions.
08:22Listen.
08:23Latest on this.
08:24Kylie, what do you know, what more can you tell us about Welker's journey to get out of Sudan?
08:31Yeah, well, listen, Kate, she was able to walk through CNN through that journey, and it began with the country.
08:37The concerning thing is their family members might not hear from them for hours on end.
08:41It's a good point.
08:42And the administration continues to face questions on this.
08:45We asked John Kirby about it when he was on the show earlier this week, and it seems that they're
08:49going to continue to face questions on this as the ceasefire in Khartoum across the country is very clearly not
08:57holding.
08:57Kylie, thanks for staying on top of it.
08:59Really appreciate it.
09:00So since the crisis in Sudan unfolded, the Biden administration has maintained, the way they put it is that it's
09:05not standard practice to use the military to evacuate citizens from war zones or places of conflict.
09:11But there have been several instances when the military did just that.
09:15Some examples, Rwanda in 1994, when the Marines helped evacuate 241 citizens during that country's civil war.
09:23In 1997, Marines also helped evacuate nearly 900 American citizens from Albania due to that country's civil unrest.
09:32In 2006, the U.S. helped orchestrate a massive evacuation effort, bringing in sea and air assets to help nearly
09:4015,000 American citizens leave Lebanon amid the war between Israel and Hezbollah then.
09:46And the U.S. military also helped evacuate Americans from Liberia multiple times over the last several decades due to
09:52the fighting there, first in 1999, then again in 92, 96, and also then in 2003.
09:58John?
09:59Important context there.
10:01To pay for us, we're hearing from Brittany Griner for the first time since her release from Russia, her emotional
10:06first press conference.
10:08And Griner's head coach, Vanessa Nygaard, joins us as the Phoenix Mercury prepare for their big first game.
10:14Plus, we're a week away now from the coronation of King Charles.
10:17A new look at the challenges ahead for the Monarch.
10:20That's next.
10:22There's a chance of severe weather today for more than 50 million Americans.
10:26But yesterday was already bad enough, with a round of tornadoes striking the south.
10:30And flooding, of course, right now is swamping the Midwest.
10:33The path of destruction carved in Florida has been pretty stunning and spectacular.
10:39The roofs completely ripped off several homes after a tornado hit just west of Tallahassee.
10:44You can also see, as we see often after horrible tornadoes, just trees snapped in half.
10:50Some of the greatest risk for severe weather today, it looks to be in Texas with concerns over large hail.
10:55As for the flooding I mentioned, CNN's Adrienne Broaddus is live in Davenport, Iowa, where the river there just keeps
11:01rising.
11:02Adrian, not bitter at all.
11:05Not even a little.
11:06As I look down at you from my perch.
11:08Thank you, friends.
11:11We are learning some more today about what about Mike Pence going before the grand jury.
11:16Sources tell CNN that Pence spoke for hours to the federal grand jury investigating Donald Trump's actions around January 6th.
11:23The testimony, this testimony from Mike Pence, as you can probably guess and understand, it really is unprecedented.
11:29Trump tried four times to block Pence from testifying.
11:32Pence even tried fighting it as well.
11:34But this is the first time that he spoke under oath about his direct conversations with the president that he
11:39served beside.
11:40CNN's Caitlin Polance has much more on this.
11:43Caitlin, you've been working this.
11:44You were there when all of this started coming out.
11:46The breaking news happened yesterday.
11:47And we're learning a touch more about potentially maybe what Mike Pence spoke about to the grand jury.
11:53What are you picking up?
11:53It's clearly difficult to get out of there, what they've been discussing in that grand jury.
11:59Right, Kate.
12:00I mean, this grand jury, it's secret.
12:02WNBA star Brittany Griner, her emotional first press conference, the first press conference since returning from Russia,
12:08and why she said, other than the Olympics, she will never go overseas to play basketball again.
12:13Her coach is our guest as the Mercury are about to kick off their new season.
12:17That's next.
12:22WNBA star Brittany Griner quickly became emotional during her first press conference yesterday since returning from Russia.
12:29Griner got choked up in the first question that she was asked.
12:32Watch this.
12:34The medalist was detained in Russia for nearly 300 days, you'll remember,
12:37and she was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug smuggling charges
12:41after Russian authorities found cannabis oil in her luggage.
12:46Griner was finally released in December as part of a prisoner swap with Russia.
12:51Griner's coach, the head coach of the Phoenix Mercury, Vanessa Nygaard, joins us now.
12:55Coach, thank you so much for taking time.
12:57It is great for everyone.
12:59It was great to see her, to see her there, to see her at that press conference for the first
13:05time since coming back.
13:05How has she been since returning and being back at practice?
13:11Coach, looking forward to seeing you guys back in the court.
13:13Thank you so much.
13:14And, John, as we can see right here, right next.
13:17Thank you so much, Coach.
13:18Right over there was Netta Shargi.
13:19She's in that picture.
13:20She's one of the members from Bring Our Families Home.
13:23Her brother, Ahmad Shargi, has been detained in Iran for years now.
13:26We've covered his story very closely, and seeing BG lift those voices, too, is so important.
13:31It's such important work, Kate.
