00:00Trump loyalists soon run the FBI. New CNN reporting on the push by right-wing allies
00:05for Trump to pick Kosh Patel as FBI director, a MAGA firebrand who has threatened to go after
00:12Trump's enemies. One of the most controversial Trump loyalists now emerging as a possible pick
00:17for a key position in the president-elect's incoming administration. Sources telling CNN
00:22that Trump is weighing a major change at the FBI as his allies lobby him to replace current FBI
00:28director Chris Wray with MAGA firebrand Kosh Patel. And troubling new details today about Trump's
00:33defense secretary pick. Officials in California confirming that former Fox host Pete Hegseth
00:39was involved in a police investigation of a sexual assault allegation back in 2017.
00:45And Trump's pick for attorney general also facing growing skepticism and doubts that he can get
00:50confirmed. Lawmakers in both parties demanding to see the findings of a house ethics investigation
00:56of Matt Gaetz for allegations of sexual misconduct and illegal drug use. But the house speaker hopes
01:02the report is never released. With us now in this story. All right, Kristen, let's start at the very
01:08beginning here. Remind our viewers who Kosh Patel is. Yeah, and Kosh Patel is a longtime Trump loyalist
01:16and he has earned. And that includes what we saw last night in RFK being named as Florida. Thank you,
01:23Omar. All right. Well, for highly controversial cabinet picks this week, here is what Republican
01:27senators are now saying about those recess appointments.
01:32Predicts that almost 260 million people will be overweight or obese by 2050. That is sharply higher
01:39from about 209 million in 2021. And as America faces a growing obesity epidemic, there is a surge
01:46in popularity of so-called miracle drugs, GLP-1-like medications, including Ozempic, Wegovi,
01:53Manjaro, and Zepbound. But there are questions about their long-term effects. We have CNN chief
01:59medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who has just wrapped a year-long investigation into these
02:04revolutionary medications. Here's a look. Dr. Sanjay Gupta is with us now on this story. And Sanjay,
02:11how have these drugs changed our understanding of obesity as a disease?
02:16You know, I think we are with obesity where we probably were with obesity.
02:21And what do we know about the long-term side effects of the drugs? Because I think that is the
02:26real
02:26thing that people question about these.
02:30Yeah, you know, we really dug deep into this. I think a few points.
02:34One is that...
02:34You will delve into more of this. And we cannot wait. Sanjay, thank you so much for that preview,
02:38because you can tune in.
02:40... happening now, the trial of the undocumented migrant charged with murdering a Georgia college
02:45student. Prosecutors detailing how Lakin Riley's smartwatch will show her long, fierce fight with
02:51her accused murderer, and how DNA evidence will link the suspect to his victim. And the FAA is
02:57investigating a close call in Hawaii. An air traffic controller's quick instructions may have saved an
03:03American Airlines flight from crashing into mountains near Honolulu Airport. We're following
03:08these major developing stories and more all coming in right here to CNN News Central.
03:13Trump is bucking norms when it comes to vetting some of his cabinet picks. Instead of using the
03:19usual FBI background checks for some of the most highly sensitive roles in his administration,
03:24Trump's team is using private companies to do critical background checks. We have CNN's Evan
03:30Perez with us now on this story. Evan, this is a big change and a concerning one.
03:35Right. By this stage, you normally have the president-elect is something that the current
03:41administration knows so that they can make the right decisions. And so there's vulnerabilities here
03:45that are built in if you don't do this. And so what we understand is happening is that behind
03:50the scenes, you know, they are the incoming transition has some doubts about reasons,
03:54right? There's national security risks about someone's contacts, certainly foreign contacts,
04:00their businesses that they might have that could potentially cause conflicts of interest.
04:08And a little experiment here real quick, like a Matt Gaetz, for instance, if he gets a private
04:13background check versus an FBI one, he was investigated by the DOJ, but they didn't proceed
04:21ultimately. Something by the FBI, would that reveal a lot more information than a private?
04:26Absolutely. There's a lot more information that is in those files.
04:29By the Senate, who has the information. Evan, great reporting. Thank you so much. Omar.
04:35Well, Brianna, President-elect Trump's aides are laying the groundwork for his promise to mass
04:40deport illegal immigrants. CNN's Priscilla Alvarez is here with details on this story that she has
04:47been following for a very long time. Priscilla, this will be expensive, arduous, in some cases
04:53heartbreaking and certainly politically fraught. How would he pull this off? Well, Brianna, in many ways,
04:58what's old is new. Again, I've been talking, been looking at their regional capabilities. They have
05:03been looking at metropolitan areas to see where they can expand their facility that again, but this time
05:08to use military assets for this type of operation. Now, that face lawsuits the first time they're
05:14prepared for that. We know that you'll continue to follow this. Priscilla Alvarez, thank you very
05:18much. Omar. It was about an American Airlines flight out of Hawaii that the FAA says narrowly avoided
05:24disaster. The plane was told airline in the FAA. Well, the good news here is that I don't think this
05:29pilot crew and the passengers were in any really grave danger here, although it's ground proximity
05:35warning system alert. That's called EGPWS or GIPWIS alert, and there were no issues with
05:41terrain clearance. So a bit of a back and forth. I'm air flight into terrain. It is a top cause
05:47of
05:47incidents. That's why that system, the American Airlines invoked, and its statement was invented
05:51in the first place. Counselors at the pilots that there's terrain. Yeah, that's the alert. It's
05:56the oral or fringe. Also, they will investigate what was happening in the control tower. It sounds
06:01like the air traffic controller in this case was policing all of the radio frequencies at one time,
06:07a lone controller in the tower, which could have mitigated the risks happening at this time of
06:12this incident. Yeah. Good news. Everyone's okay. That's good. Pete Muntean, thank you so much. And
06:17ahead on CNN News Central, or won't he? Allies of President-elect Trump are pushing him to fire FBI
06:23Director Chris Wray and nominate his loyalist Cash Patel, a man who has accused the Bureau of running
06:29unlawful campaigns against Trump. How Patel could upend the law enforcement agency if put in charge.
06:36And just the top of the hour and loyalty continues to pay off for some of President-elect Trump's
06:41biggest supporters. Trump wrapping up a wild week of controversial picks with more loyalists in line
06:47for high profile jobs. Sources telling CNN that Trump is weighing a major change at the FBI as his
06:53allies push him to replace current FBI Director Chris Wray with MAGA firebrand Cash Patel.
06:59Trump also just announced that Stephen Chung, his campaign spokesman, has been named assistant
07:04to the president and director of communications. Those names emerging as troubling new details are
07:10surfacing about Trump's defense secretary pick. Officials in California confirming former Fox host
07:16Pete Hegseth was involved in a police investigation of a sexual assault allegation back in 2017.
07:23And Trump's pick for attorney general also facing growing skepticism and some doubts that he may even be
07:29able to be confirmed. Lawmakers in both parties are demanding to see the findings of a House ethics
07:34invention of former Congressman Matt Gaetz for allegations of sexual misconduct and illegal drug
07:39use. CNN's Kristen Holmes is joining us now. And Kristen, bring us up to speed on these names
07:44that are emerging as possible new members of the Trump administration.
07:50Right now, one of the great heavyweight champs of all time is getting ready to rumble with a fighter who
07:55wasn't even born when he ruled the ring tonight. 58 year old Mike Tyson will face off against 27 year
08:01old social media star Jake Paul. Tyson was once known, of course, Sandy. Well, I mean, there should be a
08:08little bit of concern at least, right? 31 year old age difference for a fight with this much interest.
08:13I'm not before 11. All right. I mean, what if Mike makes everyone eat their words, though, Andy,
08:18that could happen, right? It could. But you have to remember, this fight was supposed to be in July
08:23and it had to be moved because he had a serious ulcer where he said he lost 26 pounds. So
08:28he's also
08:28battling that on top of being 58 years old. I'd be shocked if Tyson won. More time to get ready.
08:33Just
08:33different ways to look at it. Andy Scholes, thank you so much. So when we come back,
