Nick and Jonathan react to the NFL news regarding Kyler Murray's future.
Transcript
00:00Adam Schefter tweeting out within the last five minutes here,
00:03the Cardinals have informed Kyler Murray they intend to release him
00:06on the first day of the league year next Wednesday,
00:09barring a trade between now and then.
00:11He gets into the cap nonsense and all that.
00:15I don't think it's intentional.
00:17I do think it's intentional, rather, that in the verbiage here,
00:23barring a trade, there's still a chance that Kyler could be traded here,
00:28but my interest in Kyler Murray for the Cleveland Browns,
00:32which, again, has always been situational, was based on if he's a free agent,
00:37provided that he actually gets to free agency,
00:39then it becomes what does Kyler Murray really value in his next stop.
00:42Well, and so it's important, though, that, again,
00:44we talk about some of the cap stuff and everything like that,
00:46because the $36.8 million charge is there,
00:49it's going to be like Russell Wilson when he went to the Steelers.
00:51You're going to be paying the minimum in order to get Kyler Murray's services.
00:55So, like, we talked about, like, what's the best picture scenario?
00:58You are more likely than not unless something crazy happens in the next nine days.
01:02You're not going to be paying any trade compensation,
01:04and he's going to be playing for the Browns for, I don't know, $1 million?
01:09Like, you can't get cheaper,
01:11and you can't get better than what Kyler Murray would be offering up.
01:14It's just what do you have to tell him in order to get him here?
01:17Yeah, and I think from Kyler's standpoint,
01:19because anywhere he goes that isn't New York,
01:23there's going to be, like, the Jets,
01:25who's going to compete with Kyler there as of right now?
01:28Unless they draft Ty Simpson and do the old,
01:31do the Kirk Cousins where,
01:33hey, Kyler, you're our guy,
01:34and in the draft, all of a sudden they draft somebody with the weather.
01:37The old Michael Penick switcheroo.
01:38Which I wouldn't advise, but it's the Jets.
01:42Without the $100 million.
01:43I just, if I'm Kyler and I look at this and go,
01:45would I rather compete with a coach, by the way,
01:49that's had success with a style of quarterback
01:51similar to what I can play in a mobile quarterback
01:54or a dual-threat quarterback in Todd Munkin,
01:57and my, like, competition is washed Deshaun Watson,
02:02who's more interested in Instagram videos
02:04than maybe playing these days,
02:06or Shador Sanders,
02:07or do I want to go to Minnesota
02:09and face against J.J. McCarthy,
02:13who's still got some juice there,
02:15and try and fit into Kevin O'Connell's offense.
02:19Yeah, is Munkin a selling point in this equation?
02:21He's never a selling point versus Kevin O'Connell in many ways,
02:24but what Munkin did with Lamar Jackson
02:27has to appeal to Kyler Murray,
02:28plus the idea that if you signed him,
02:30you're telling him you get to be the starting quarterback.
02:32Yeah, and if I'm Kyler,
02:33I think this has been the under-reported thing.
02:36I know the injuries are a problem there.
02:38I know he's a bit of a,
02:40he's a different guy, right?
02:41He's also a little micro-machine, right?
02:43But if I'm Kyler,
02:45I maybe felt a little shoehorned in to an offense
02:49playing in the Kevin Stefanski offense,
02:51the Drew Petsing offense.
02:53It's not the same offense going to Minnesota,
02:56but it is similar principles of what you're going to have to do
02:58and being fit into somebody else's box.
03:00I do think Todd Munkin,
03:02being able to prove that he can build an offense
03:03around Jameis Winston and then Lamar Jackson,
03:06two different quarterbacks,
03:07I think you can make a selling point there
03:09if you're the Browns.
03:10And again, I might feel better about beating out Shador Sanders,
03:14who the Browns have a fifth-round pick invested in,
03:17versus a former first-rounder in Minnesota,
03:19or even Atlanta, where Michael Penix Jr. is.
03:21I mean, this is much more appetizing to someone like myself
03:24than the Malik Willis convo,
03:25and paying all that money,
03:26while also committing to Malik Willis for X amount of years.
03:29Like, this is,
03:30I'm not calling it an ideal scenario,
03:32but for the Browns,
03:33this would be about as good as it gets
03:35if they don't want to see what Shador can do next year,
03:37and they just want to try to get as many wins as they possibly can,
03:39and then let the chips fall where they may.
03:41And I think that's where, like,
03:42we've almost gotten bogged down
03:44in the nuance of the price tag, right?
03:46Like, Anthony Richardson for free,
03:48sure, I'll do it.
03:49Anthony Richardson for a fifth-round pick,
03:51not on your damn life.
03:52That should be a developmental offensive lineman
03:54that two years from now
03:55might be able to start for the Cleveland Browns.
03:57I have no interest in giving it for a quarterback
03:59that I think there's about a 1% probability
04:02that that guy does anything in the NFL,
04:03no matter how good his combine still looks three years later.
04:07But I say that to say,
04:09like, if we get to price tag aside,
04:12just who are the actual best quarterbacks?
04:15Not perceptionally best,
04:16no, no, no.
04:17Like, who are the guys who've done the most
04:19that you think you might be able to get out of?
04:21The two guys that I think of that make sense
04:23are Kyler and Mac Jones.
04:25Those are guys with first-round pedigree.
04:27They are guys who have ascribed to a certain level,
04:30or not ascribed,
04:31but have achieved a certain level in the NFL,
04:35and perceptionally,
04:36they are challenged because of this idea of their value
04:40and who they weren't in the NFL.
04:42That's how,
04:43that's the engine that drove Baker Mayfield
04:44to Tampa ban a one-year, $6 million prove-it deal.
04:47That's the engine.
04:48Yeah, very same thing.
04:49That took Sam Darnold
04:50all the way to San Francisco
04:52and up to Minnesota
04:53on a one-year, $10 million deal.
04:55When we get into,
04:56can we find,
04:57and again,
04:58it's heavy,
04:59it's loaded now
05:00because Sam Darnold
05:00is a Super Bowl winning quarterback,
05:02but when we try and find
05:04who's the guy with first-round value
05:06that people don't look at
05:08in that way anymore,
05:10Kyler Murray and Mac Jones
05:11are the two guys.
05:12Price aside,
05:13whatever you're going to pay to get them
05:14are the guys that make the most sense
05:16this offseason,
05:17and I think
05:18if you get the other things right
05:20next year,
05:21we could be talking about the Browns
05:22in a very competitive situation.
05:24But now you get to throw the price into this,
05:26and I think the price becomes a feature,
05:28not a bug,
05:29when we talk about Kyler Murray.
05:30Like, this is an important part
05:31of this conversation.
05:32Like, if I was in the
05:34anything-but-shador camp
05:35the way that it feels like
05:36some people exist in,
05:37you should be screaming
05:38about how Kyler Murray's right there
05:40and what do we have to do
05:41to get Kyler Murray.
05:42Like, again,
05:43like the idea that you'd be paying
05:44next to nothing
05:44to not only acquire him,
05:47but the actual price tag within this.
05:48Like, this is,
05:49this is a mega deal,
05:50all things considered.
05:51I think he's the best quarterback
05:52on the market,
05:52and he also comes with
05:54the best friendliest version
05:55for the Browns as well.
05:56Like, that's a,
05:57you can't just let these opportunities go,
05:59which is whether or not
06:00he wants to come here.
06:00Yeah, and I think that will end up being,
06:03like, what does Kyler Murray
06:04truly value?
06:06Is it the name brand
06:07of Kevin O'Connell
06:08and what Kevin O'Connell
06:10did for Sam Darnold?
06:12With no guarantees, by the way.
06:13It would scare the hell out of me
06:14if I was Kyler Murray.
06:15And I think that's fair,
06:16but he would be able to play
06:17in a,
06:18and even though he's playing
06:19in a cold weather market,
06:22and there's a lot of
06:22cold weather opponents
06:23who do get half the season
06:25in the Dome.
06:25Yeah, that's fair.
06:26Whereas in Cleveland,
06:27I think.
06:27Kid that grew up in Texas.
06:28Yeah.
06:29Yeah, that does matter.
06:30And so,
06:31and I also,
06:31here's the other thing.
06:32I don't know what Kyler thinks
06:33of Deshaun.
06:34And I don't mean,
06:35like, personally,
06:36I mean, like,
06:36does Kyler think Deshaun
06:39has anything left?
06:40And I think that's something
06:42the Browns would have to answer to
06:43of like,
06:44hey, Kyler,
06:45just so you know,
06:45Deshaun's going to be here.
06:47We would rather walk upon
06:49glass for 18 weeks
06:51than ever actually play him
06:52on the field.
06:53So he'll be here,
06:54but he's not going to be here
06:55if that makes sense.
06:56I think that,
06:57I actually think
06:58the Deshaun thing
06:59might be a bigger hindrance
07:00to you signing Kyler Murray
07:03than maybe Shador would.
07:04That's interesting.
07:05If I was Kyler,
07:06I really wouldn't concern myself
07:07with Deshaun or Shador.
07:08I would just,
07:09I would enter with the idea
07:10that I have assurances
07:11this is my job.
07:12Like,
07:12everything that Todd Munkin
07:13told us at the,
07:14in the past week and a half
07:16about this open competition
07:17and this being a real battle
07:18and everyone's going to get a chance,
07:20that would just go out the window.
07:21Like,
07:21Kyler Murray would be coming here
07:23with the assurances
07:24he's the week one guy
07:25and that's kind of case closed.
07:26Juan,
07:26and to build on the idea
07:27of the baked in value of Kyler,
07:30I think the guy who was,
07:32again,
07:32anywhere from 25 to 30 touchdowns combined
07:35between rushing and passing
07:38and within 12 turnovers
07:41or less a year,
07:42which is what you got
07:43for most of the Kyler experience
07:44when he's been healthy.
07:46I think that guy is in there.
07:47And I think if you take
07:49a one year
07:50Russell Wilson type deal
07:52for Kyler this year,
07:53I think that allows you
07:55to then put your,
07:55your full resources
07:57into building the offensive line
07:59and maybe making a run
08:00at another decent wide receiver.
08:02And I do think that's how,
08:04like,
08:04I don't,
08:05do I think that you can get this offense
08:06to be a top 10 offense next year?
08:08No,
08:08I don't.
08:09I just,
08:09there's just not the resources out there.
08:11There's not the right mix of prospects
08:13and free agents and all that.
08:14Do I think if that defense
08:17can still be 90% of what it was last year
08:20and this offense is the 14th best offense
08:22in the NFL,
08:23do I think that gives you a chance
08:25to be really interesting,
08:26more interesting than people realize
08:28in Todd Munkin's first year?
08:30Absolutely.
08:31And that really is,
08:32we,
08:32I said it to start the show,
08:33the crux of this.
08:34And I think it's in Todd Munkin's
08:37best interest
08:38to win as many games
08:40as he can this year.
08:41It just is.
08:42Well then Kyler is the answer.
08:43If that's the,
08:43if that's their reality,
08:44Kyler is the answer
08:46because he's going to give you
08:47the best chance
08:47to win as many games as possible.
08:49Now,
08:49again,
08:49he's never won a playoff game
08:50in his career,
08:52but I can argue
08:53he's never had a defense
08:54the way that this Browns defense
08:55is either.
08:55And like,
08:55that's a big component
08:56to all of this.
08:57By the way,
08:57I did look up,
08:58he is,
08:59he's actually thrived
08:59in cold weather games,
09:01oddly enough.
09:01He's not played
09:02in a million 45 degree
09:03and under games,
09:04but he's played in a handful
09:05and he's got a 103.5 passer rating,
09:08eight touchdowns
09:09and two interceptions
09:11or he's actually not bad
09:12in cold weather.
09:13He's still an itty bitty quarterback.
09:15And that part's not going away.
09:17And I do think,
09:17like because of his size
09:18and because of his style,
09:22do I think there's a limitation here?
09:24Of course there is.
09:26There's no quarterback
09:27that you could get
09:28this off season
09:29that doesn't have
09:30some sort of a limitation.
09:32But,
09:33this is about risk management
09:34and it's about giving,
09:35listen,
09:36I really do,
09:36the one thing I feel
09:37most passionate about is
09:39anybody that goes out there
09:41this year for the Browns
09:42that is putting their necks,
09:44their knees,
09:44their life on the line,
09:46and that's a little heavy-handed
09:47with the life on the line,
09:48but certainly putting
09:48their physical well-being
09:50on the line.
09:51I don't want to lie to them again.
09:53I don't think you really
09:54gave them a chance
09:54between Kenny Pickett,
09:56Joe Flacco,
09:56and the rookies last year.
09:57I don't.
09:58And I don't want to do that again.
10:00Like that is,
10:00football is a brutal sport
10:02and there's a lot of guys
10:03in that room
10:04that deserve the chance
10:05to compete.
10:06I think Kyler Murray
10:07gives you a chance
10:08to compete,
10:08depending on what happens
10:09with Mack Jones
10:10in San Francisco.
10:11I think Mack Jones
10:12gives you a chance
10:12to compete.
10:14All the other guys
10:15that we've talked about
10:16to some degree or another
10:17I look at and go,
10:18well, I don't really,
10:19like the probability
10:20is so low with those guys.
10:22Like Kyler, I think,
10:23is a decent probability
10:24player of working out.
10:25Mack Jones, I think,
10:26is a decent probability
10:27of working out type player.
10:29Everybody else,
10:30I look at Malik Willis
10:31and I'm like,
10:31that's a 15% chance
10:33he actually lives up
10:34to that deal.
10:34Yeah, for sure.
10:35If we're just weighing
10:35the pros and the cons of it all,
10:37Kyler brings a lot more
10:38pros to the table.
10:38And again, now he's on
10:39like the friendliest
10:40to friendliest deals
10:41in order to get him here.
10:42And it's just the idea
10:43you have to convince him
10:44that Munkin's going to be able
10:45to bring something out of him
10:46that these other places can't.
10:47Short and Sweet on Twitter
10:48saying,
10:49the Browns are about
10:50to bleep this all up
10:51once again.
10:52Like, stop being greedy
10:53and back one of the guys
10:54you already have.
10:55You're only showing
10:55that you don't know
10:56what you're doing.
10:57Show some loyalty
10:58and confidence in these guys
10:59and maybe you'll get
11:00better play.
11:01I don't know why
11:03Deshaun or Shador
11:04to this point
11:05deserves
11:05your absolute
11:07looking at the rest
11:08of the market
11:09and going,
11:09under no circumstance
11:10am I going to bring
11:11another quality quarterback in.
11:12I just don't understand
11:13the loyalty line.
11:14It's the NFL.
11:15You don't have to have
11:16loyalty to anybody.
11:17Like, the whole job
11:18is to try to get
11:20the best team you possibly
11:21can at any cost.
11:22You don't have to worry
11:22about loyalty.
11:23Also, this is a numbers game.
11:24Like, the one way
11:25in which this quarterback room
11:26will be similar
11:27to last year,
11:29it's going to be
11:30all right,
11:31you've got three lottery tickets.
11:33Will one of them
11:33scratch off
11:34and you maybe get $10
11:35if you spend a dollar?
11:36Yeah.
11:37I also look at it like
11:38Kyler's coming off
11:39this major injury
11:40that he had
11:40that kept him out
11:41for last season.
11:42If he gets injured again,
11:43you still have to have
11:44pieces and parts
11:45and whether it's
11:46Chador or Deshaun,
11:47somebody there
11:48in order to basically
11:48catch him when they fall.
11:49But the season,
11:50the season,
11:52with Kyler,
11:53if he can play all 17,
11:55I mean, it gives you
11:55the best chance
11:56of winning the most amount
11:56of games.
11:57It's just whether or not
11:57you want to do that
11:58for the 2027 draft.
11:59That's the question
12:00the Browns have to ask
12:00themselves and I would
12:01bet they do.
12:02And it is,
12:03can you get the B version
12:05of,
12:06we've gotten the C
12:08or worse version
12:09of Kyler the last two years
12:11because of injuries
12:12and other factors.
12:13Can you get
12:14the B or better version
12:15of Kyler?
12:16And that's about context.
12:18Well,
12:19the reason why
12:19the context doesn't
12:20make sense with Ty Simpson
12:21is you're taking away
12:23one of the things,
12:24one of your limited resources
12:25to make the context
12:26around Ty Simpson work
12:27and then you're playing
12:28the time game.
12:30Well,
12:30Kyler will be ready to go.
12:31He's a seven-year vet.
12:32Yeah.
12:33And again,
12:34he doesn't cost a draft pick
12:35at least unless a trade
12:37materializes from somebody
12:38and he doesn't really cost
12:39a whole lot of cap space.
12:40Yeah,
12:40I can make an argument
12:41two years ago
12:42was actually not a bad year
12:43for Kyler by any stretch.
12:44It was actually one
12:44of his better years
12:45in more recent accounting.
12:47It was better than his 2022
12:48and his 2023.
12:49So like just as recently
12:50as two years ago,
12:51I think it was ninth
12:52in QBR when it was
12:53all said and done,
12:53which is not a metric
12:54I like to use,
12:55but just something
12:55to tell you
12:56he didn't flat out suck.
