00:00To our host, Brian Kenney. Brian?
00:02Yeah, Barry and Steve, you know, I echo what you're saying.
00:04Jojo Diaz just looked terrific and an outstanding decision by the judge there,
00:08by the referee, rather, in stopping that fight right then and there.
00:11We've seen enough, and Diaz just looks tremendous at the age of 20.
00:15More fights coming up here on Showtime Extreme,
00:17and then, of course, later on Showtime itself,
00:20three big fights, Marcos Maidana and Josecito Lopez in the main event.
00:24Two weeks from now, Saturday, June 22nd, on Showtime,
00:26an outstanding matchup, our own Paulie Malignaggi,
00:30who has the belt at WBA at 147 pounds,
00:33taking on the number one lightweight in the world, Adrian Broner.
00:37Broner has been going through the lightweight division.
00:39He is ranked number one by Ring Magazine.
00:41It's an outstanding matchup as we head back to Brooklyn.
00:44It is the brash young kid against the brash, fast-talking veteran.
00:50June 22nd.
00:52Can't knock a guy out, so I'm a knocker.
00:54Now you're fighting a real fighter.
00:55You're Adrian Broner. You're not Floyd Mayweather.
00:57I win like him, too.
00:58The talk is over.
01:00You know you can't beat me.
01:00You know you're a real man.
01:01You know you can't beat me.
01:02I know I can beat you.
01:02I know I can beat you.
01:03You know you can beat me.
01:04And the fists will fly.
01:06As undefeated power-punching phenom Adrian Broner
01:09moves up in weight to take on the speed and skill
01:11of WBA welterweight champ Paulie Malignaggi.
01:14Malignaggi versus Broner.
01:16Live Saturday, June 22nd at 9 Eastern, 6 Pacific.
01:19Only on Showtime.
01:20Once again, two weeks from now, Saturday, June 22nd.
01:24Live from Brooklyn, right on Showtime, Paulie Malignaggi versus Adrian Broner.
01:28And it's a tough fight for us.
01:30Look, Broner, we welcome him to Showtime, his first fight here on Showtime.
01:33He's a spectacular young talent.
01:35Could be one of the best fighters pound for pound in the world.
01:38But Paulie's our own guy.
01:40We work with him here.
01:40He's a terrific young broadcaster, and we look forward to it.
01:43But I'm torn when I'm going to be watching that fight in the ring in Brooklyn.
01:46Again, more fights ahead here on Showtime Extreme.
01:49Let's go back ringside to Barry Tompkins and Steve Farhood.
01:52All right, thanks, BK.
01:52Yeah, it's family.
01:53It is, of course, hard to root, but we have to be objective about all of this.
01:56And I think the real bottom line here is both these guys can talk.
01:59And the better side of that coin is that they can both fight, too,
02:02and you don't find that very often.
02:03Oh, for sure.
02:04That's already been established.
02:05Barry, this is an unusual fight.
02:07I'm going to make a little bit of a different suggestion.
02:09I hope they don't fight for another two years.
02:11Just let the pre-fight hype play out for another couple of years,
02:14because at times it's been dramatic, at times it's been bizarre,
02:17at times it's been ridiculous, but it's always been entertaining.
02:19You know, and I think if you really just look at this fight
02:21and take a casual look at it, you think, well, Broner, of course,
02:24he's the hot ticket right now.
02:25He's beating everybody.
02:26He's knocking people out.
02:27But remember, he's coming up to 147 pounds,
02:30and he, basically speaking, is the kid,
02:32and Paulie Malignaggi's been around the track a little bit.
02:34Exactly right.
02:35And don't forget that not only is Broner jumping up from lightweight, Barry,
02:39but it wasn't long ago that he was a junior lightweight.
02:41And if Paulie Malignaggi has proven anything over the years,
02:44we know he's a good boxer, tremendous hand speed.
02:47What's beautiful about him is he proved against Miguel Cotto a long time ago
02:49how tough he is, and that'll serve him very well against Broner.
02:52All right, we've been talking about the 147-pound division.
02:54We're going to turn ourselves to that division right now,
02:57and a guy who could be a very bright light at 147 pounds
03:01fights for the third time here in the United States,
03:03Yoshihiro Kamigai, and he's going to get all he wants, I think, from Johan Perez.
03:07Yeah, Kamigai has had seven fights at this weight,
03:10so he's a little bit more familiar with the welterweight division
03:13where Perez is making a jump from junior welterweight.
03:16This will be his first fight at 47, but he's bigger right now than Kamigai is.
03:20All right, let's meet him.
03:21We'll take it to the center of the ring once more.
03:22The ring announcer, Joe Martinez.
03:24Joe?
03:28Once again, ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening.
03:30Welcome back to Home Depot Center here in Carson, California,
03:32for Showtime Xtreme.
03:35This next contest is presented in association with Golden Boy Promotions,
03:39Taken Promotions, and Showtime.
03:42Sponsored by Corona, La Cerveza Más Fina,
03:44and AT&T Pienzas Sin Límites.
03:48The judges scoring this contest all hailing from California,
03:51Carla Caiz, Pat Connolly, and Jonathan Davis.
03:54And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action,
03:57Thomas Taylor.
03:58And here we go, ladies and gentlemen,
04:00an international showdown,
04:0210 rounds for the vacant WBA International Welterweight Championship.
04:09Introducing to you first,
04:10fighting out of the red corner,
04:12wearing white trunks trimmed in gold,
04:13he weighed 147 pounds.
04:16Hailing from Caracas, Venezuela,
04:18he brings an outstanding professional record
04:20that stands at 16 victories.
04:21One defeat, one draw, one no contest,
04:25and 12 big victories coming by way of knockout.
04:28Please welcome Johan,
04:30El Terrible Perez.
04:34And next, his opponent across the ring,
04:40fighting out of the blue corner,
04:42wearing black, trimmed, and silver,
04:44hailing and fighting out of Tokyo, Japan.
04:47He weighed an officially 146 and one half pounds,
04:50and brings a perfect professional record
04:53that stands at 22 victories.
04:55No defeats, one draw,
04:57and 19 victories coming by way of knockout.
05:00Please welcome the former Japanese Super Lightweight Champion,
05:04currently ranked the number six welterweight contender
05:07by both the WBA and WBO,
05:11here is Yoshihiro Maestrito Kamehai.
05:18Once again, referee Thomas Tanner with the final instructions.
05:22Boxer Chief second.
05:23Boxer Chief second.
05:25Club.
05:27Gentlemen, we've gone over the rules in the dressing room.
05:29I want to remind you, protect yourselves at all times,
05:31listen to my commands.
05:31Touch the gloves, back to your point.
05:35All right, with that, we are set to go
05:37with Yoshihiro Kamagai fighting for the third time
05:41in the United States.
05:41He has a knockout win,
05:42and the only mar on his record, a draw.
05:45That took place here in the States as well,
05:47against Johan, and let me emphasize,
05:50it is, we asked him,
05:51how do you pronounce your name?
05:51He said, Johan.
05:53So it is Johan Perez.
05:56Box.
05:57Here we go, round one, scheduled for 10.
06:02Barry Perez promised us when we spoke to him
06:04that he'd be aggressive.
06:05If he's going to be aggressive,
06:07this is going to be an action fight,
06:08because Kamehai is always aggressive.
06:10Both these guys can get you out of there.
06:1219 knockouts and 22 wins for Kamehai.
06:1412 knockouts and 16 wins for Perez.
06:17And if your name is El Terrible,
06:24you better be tough.
06:27Like El Terrible Morales.
06:29You better be tough,
06:29or you better be terrible.
06:30One of the two.
06:34Well, Perez is a good test for Kamehai,
06:36because at one point he had an interim alphabet title.
06:40He's been in with some good fighters,
06:41including Pablo Cano.
06:46Well, we keep talking about this 147-pound division.
06:49It's already a terrific division.
06:51And really,
06:52either one of these guys could step up
06:54and at least be on the periphery of it.
06:57Sure.
06:57And that's why,
06:58especially for Kamehai,
06:59who has a little bit of history here in the U.S.,
07:01that's why this is a big fight for him.
07:03He's a soldier.
07:03He says he's going to stay here,
07:05going to keep fighting here,
07:06because you just can't find guys
07:07to fight in Japan at 147 pounds.
07:11A little bit of a headbutt there.
07:20It'll be tough for Kamehai
07:22being so far from home, Barry,
07:24but I think what benefits him
07:26is he's had two fights in the States already,
07:28and they were both fantastic fights.
07:31All action fights.
07:32You mentioned the draw against Jorge Silva.
07:34How about that left hand right there,
07:35although Perez did not take a backward step.
07:42Well, Perez clearly wants some distance in this fight.
07:46Not being as aggressive as he promised,
07:48at least not yet.
07:53Stop.
07:54Come on, don't do that, all right?
07:55Let's go.
07:56Cox.
07:57You talked about Tom Taylor.
07:59Very effective referee.
08:00Takes control of that being intrusive.
08:12Kamehai finding a home for that left hand.
08:14Watch that.
08:15Perez answers.
08:17Well, Perez is a long fighter,
08:18and right now he's a little bit
08:20out of Kamehai's range.
08:21Nice combination right there by Perez.
08:25Very close first round.
08:26Yeah, although the numbers tell us Kamehai's the one
08:28with the reach advantage.
08:3071 inches to 70.
08:33I've always thought, quite frankly,
08:34that's one of the most overrated statistics in boxing.
08:38Oftentimes, we'll just tell you how broad his back is.
08:40Exactly.
08:43It's not necessarily the length of the arm.
08:45The reach is from fingertip to fingertip.
08:48Nice combination again by Perez.
08:50Good round for him.
08:51Yeah, it is.
08:52And always in combination, too.
08:56Again, you see that Kamehai punching
08:57when he's not in range to do so.
09:01All right, Steve, let's talk about the keys to victory
09:03first for Yoshihiro Kamehai.
09:06Well, one thing he didn't do in the first round,
09:07change angles.
09:08He gets hit a lot because he stands right in front
09:10of his opponents, so some movement will be effective.
09:13Aim downstairs.
09:14He's a very good body puncher, Kamehai,
09:16and he can wear Perez down with his hooks.
09:19And control the pace.
09:20You don't have to fight all the time.
09:21If Kamehai occasionally backs off,
09:23he'll surprise Perez when he does attack.
09:28And for Johan Perez, straight punches.
09:31He can be a bit wide with his power shots.
09:33And in round one, he punched straight,
09:35and it worked for him.
09:36Right hand happy.
09:37Kamehai's quite hittable.
09:38Perez should look to land his best shot
09:40at the right hand.
09:40He did that in round one.
09:42And tuck in his chin.
09:43Perez has a tendency to stick his chin in the air
09:46when he punches, and that's a bad idea
09:48against an offensive machine like Kamehai.
09:52It's a very interesting first round.
09:54Each man had his moments.
09:57We're coming to round two.
09:58Guys, get that mouth.
09:59Get that mouth.
10:02The sun has not yet gone down below the brim of the bleachers here.
10:07Thank you, Brian.
10:09You saw those weather stats that we had.
10:1169 degrees.
10:13I think that might have been in the ocean.
10:16Yes, in the sun it is not 69 degrees.
10:17No, it is not.
10:19I don't know if it's hot enough to affect the fighters,
10:21especially smaller fighters.
10:22I think we saw an effect in the heavyweight fight.
10:25Those are guys 260 pounds.
10:30Looks like Kamehai wants to pick up the pace a little bit here.
10:33Stepping forward a little more lively.
10:35Wants the crowd of a little bit, too.
10:37You saw him almost run at him that time,
10:38but he took an uppercut from Perez.
10:43Perez, for a round, in a little bit, anyways,
10:46fighting the right fight.
10:47Staying on the outside, taking advantage
10:48when Kamehai's off balance and lunging.
10:52In the first round, both fighters landed 10 punches,
10:54so give the round to whoever you want to.
10:57All right, I will.
10:58All right, stop.
10:59No punch.
10:59Straight back.
11:00Straight back.
11:01Straight back.
11:01No punch.
11:11Kamehai with that exaggerated peek-a-boo defense.
11:14He really keeps his gloves very tight in front of his face,
11:16so much so that I don't know how he sees Perez.
11:18Kastamato would be proud, wouldn't he?
11:20Yeah.
11:20Stop.
11:21No punch.
11:22Straight back.
11:23Watch what you're holding, all right?
11:24Let's go.
11:25Pucks.
11:31Clearly right now, it is Perez who is dictating
11:33how this fight is being fought.
11:42Kamehai has to step more quickly,
11:44cut off the ring a little bit more,
11:46get a little closer.
11:46He's not jabbing his way in.
11:48No, you're right,
11:48and he does have a tendency to follow Perez.
11:52There was a right hand by Kamehai.
11:55Hasn't thrown that right hand very much.
11:58And Johan Perez has never been down in the pros,
12:00so something to think about
12:02if Kamehai starts getting more effective
12:05with his punches.
12:06A couple left hand from Perez.
12:07So, Perez, another effective round here.
12:10Almost a clash of heads in there.
12:16The other thing Kamehai needs to do
12:18when he does get close,
12:19work the body.
12:20Straight back.
12:21Straight back.
12:21Let's go.
12:22Pucks.
12:23Turn around.
12:24First round was pretty close, Barry.
12:31I don't think the second round is.
12:33It's been all Perez, I think.
12:44Come on, guys.
12:45Work on there.
12:46Good job.
12:51Combination punching there.
12:52Left hand and a good right hand
12:55off the ropes of Perez.
12:56He took a left from Kamehai.
12:58But by and large,
12:59and you said it,
12:59a good second round for Johan Perez.
13:02Here's a guy we're going to be seeing
13:04on July 27th.
13:06He'll be in San Antonio.
13:07Jesus Soto-Carras
13:10with the youngest.
13:11Soto-Carras.
13:13Soto-Carras.
13:14That would be Jesus on the right.
13:15Oh, thank you.
13:16I wasn't sure.
13:22Speaking of welterweights
13:24who are going to trade punches,
13:26Kamehai had a big moment here
13:27at the very end of round two.
13:30Left hook snaps back the head of Perez.
13:32Otherwise, though,
13:33the round was pretty much controlled.
13:34You see it right to the top
13:35of the head by Perez.
13:36That round was controlled by Perez,
13:37and the show stats just handed to me
13:3916-9 in connect for Perez.
13:45So these guys are both
13:47in that prospect category,
13:49but you can see
13:50just the difference in ability
13:51in this fight
13:52from the first two fights
13:53that we've had already tonight
13:54on Show Extreme.
13:55Yeah, very much so.
13:56These are two guys
13:57who want to crash
13:58the welterweight party.
13:59So far,
14:08Perez is keeping the fight
14:10at long range
14:10where he wants it.
14:14And that's the key
14:15to everything that's happening.
14:17So Kamehai has to figure out
14:19a way to get closer,
14:20maybe bending the knees
14:22when he's coming in
14:22so that some of the punches
14:23go over his head,
14:24maybe jab his way
14:25in a little bit more.
14:26A couple of body shots
14:27by Kamehai.
14:28And Kamehai just got inside
14:30and Perez just spun him away
14:31and reestablished that distance.
14:35Yeah, Perez is a very crafty guy.
14:38Only had 18 fights.
14:39Kamehai's had 23.
14:45Perez missed with the uppercut,
14:46but he didn't miss
14:47with that left hand.
14:52That's a good body shot
14:53by Kamehai.
14:54He's had a couple of them
14:55this round.
14:58Nice, nice, nice, nice.
15:01Nice.
15:02All over there.
15:03Stop.
15:07Stop.
15:07Stop.
15:07Stop.
15:11Pretty neat defensive moves
15:13from Perez.
15:14Absolutely.
15:15One of the things
15:16I noticed watching him
15:17before this fight
15:17on tape, Barry,
15:18when he punches,
15:19he kind of exposes his chin.
15:21His chin comes up a little bit.
15:22So far,
15:22Kamehai not able
15:23to take advantage of that.
15:25Double left hand.
15:26Left to the body,
15:26left to the head.
15:34He's also out-quicken
15:35Kamehai
15:36so far in this fight.
15:39Very much so.
15:40And in his two previous fights
15:42in the States,
15:42Kamehai was not
15:44forced to try to hit
15:45a moving target.
15:46Tonight he is.
15:47Pretty good left hand
15:47right there
15:48by Kamehai.
15:52A little swelling
15:53under the left eye
15:54of Kamehai now.
16:03You know,
16:04Kamehai very often
16:05hot dogs it a little bit
16:06in the ring as well.
16:06You don't see any of that.
16:07And I think that's because
16:08he understands he's in a fight
16:09that he may not be winning.
16:11Now he can turn around
16:12for sure.
16:15Ten-round fight.
16:17Perez has done well
16:18getting out of
16:19situations like he's in
16:20right now.
16:21And again,
16:21he just pushes Kamehai
16:23off of him
16:24but then gets right
16:24back into the corner.
16:26Where I would think
16:27his corner
16:28would not want him to be.
16:30Perez fighting
16:31left-handed now.
16:32Left-handed stance.
16:33Now he's back to righty.
16:35And lefty and righty.
16:36Yeah.
16:36That's the bottom line.
16:43Fox.
16:50Fox.
16:56Time!
17:00We take a look
17:01at action
17:03from round three.
17:05We talked about Perez
17:05being a big right-handed puncher.
17:06He's done very good work
17:07with his left hand.
17:08Look at that nice uppercut
17:09hook combination.
17:10Both punches land.
17:12Kamehai did not
17:13see those shots coming.
17:15And then later in the round,
17:16Kamehai comes back.
17:18Again,
17:18punching from a little bit
17:19too far away
17:20but the right hand
17:21brought him forward
17:22and he was able
17:23to land the left hook
17:24when he was close enough.
17:28You don't need to sneeze.
17:30No.
17:31No.
17:31I got to do it.
17:32Okay.
17:33You understand?
17:34Knee.
17:35He got him.
17:37He got him.
17:37He got him.
17:37Left, left, right, body.
17:40Me quite.
17:41Magaru.
17:42He got him.
17:43You understand?
17:43He got him.
17:43He got him.
17:43Left, left, right.
17:45Choke to the side.
17:45Go crack and kiddie.
17:47Okay.
17:47To the side.
17:48Left.
17:50Come on.
17:50Come on.
17:51Clean, clean, clean, clean, clean.
17:52And I think the real
17:53operable words there
17:54were step to the side.
17:55He has not done a lot of that.
17:56He's following Perez
17:57around the ring.
17:58He's following him.
18:08Stop.
18:09Straight back.
18:09Straight back.
18:10Straight back.
18:11Let's go.
18:11Box.
18:11still a long way to go in this fight but perez is dictating the fight so far there was a quick
18:22right hand and again that swelling into the left eye of kamagai not getting any better yeah mouse
18:27is forming there come on guys stop no punch straight back straight back let's go box
18:32kamagai's been long in fights that's going to help him here
18:36been ten a couple of times nine a couple of times but so has perez he's a veteran
18:42well if kamagai wants to prove himself worthy here in the united states i mean he's
18:51he's drawn a pretty tough card to do that tonight
18:54get off his head get off his head even if it means getting hit with shots kamagai's got to keep
19:03applying pressure because eventually that pressure may get to perez
19:07it's not yet now kamagai's still out quicking him and he's getting the best of almost every rally
19:13we've been talking about changing angles it's something perez has done very well continues
19:20to do look he's doing it right now stepping to the side making kamagai reset
19:25three punch combination a good one from perez
19:35kamagai tried to work the body he's had some success in the last couple rounds
19:41now there's that that that little segment right there illustrated what's been going on in this
19:50whole fight perez back to the ropes but he was the only one punching and as a result he got away
19:55whenever he wanted slipped to the side and he was gone and right now kamagai he's still following
20:01him around but he's he's just kind of walking into him now perez nice stuff conceivably can time that
20:09well it would benefit kamagai quite a bit if he if he led with a jab as he's coming forward
20:14he's never doing that seems more intent on keeping the gloves up
20:17and even that's not serving him real well if you look at his eye
20:24there you go and that's because perez is punching in combination yeah everything in combination
20:29well that's another effective round in my opinion i stopped for johan perez watch your head i agree
20:45barry with the exception of that first round i think it's been very difficult to find a round to
20:49give to kamagai i even gave the first round
21:01and here's another very popular guy here on showtime leo santa cruz very popular here in southern
21:05california for good reason there's not a more exciting action fighter this guy throws punches like
21:12in bunches that we've never seen before he's just non-stop and maybe taking a similar road to
21:16abner maris he won the bantamore title now he's at 122 or junior featherweight always entertaining yeah
21:23two good guys ian maris okay you're doing great you can just keep breathing deep and stay off the ropes
21:34don't stay off the ropes just keep boxing right in the middle but don't stay away from the ropes okay
21:40okay this round you're the best let's go
21:53probably two of the better punches in the fight landed right there by his corner
22:00tough game when you have to worry about defense while you're sitting on your stool exactly
22:03well you know we talk about pace and it's been an honest pace
22:08yet perez landed his high for the fight 18 punches in round four show stats tell us so he's not slowing
22:16down yet and everything is in combination too and effectively good body shot there from kamagai stop stop
22:24stop let him go watch the head let's go box running total on total punches oh excuse me this is last
22:34round around uh that was round four and it was a close round but perez busier and with more connects
22:42stop sit back sit back come guy doing exactly or rather uh perez doing exactly what his corner
22:48suggests keeping the fight in the middle of the ring trying to box him throwing everything in combination
22:53out working him
23:02kamagai does rip to the body pretty well he does and he does punch to the body when perez is on against
23:08the ropes but he hasn't been able to keep perez against the ropes he hasn't been particularly physical
23:15throws body in there lean on a little bit use some forearms
23:17right here see it again and again he got out quick and it's because of the distance between the
23:26two kamagai has not done a good job of limiting that distance even when perez is against the ropes
23:31you never know barry we were talking about kamagai at the top
23:59we're talking about perez now he had another comment he's a 29 year old fighter he's fought
24:04around the world at a pretty high level this is his first first exposure
24:10oh he's making the most of it so far he sure is looks really good not a huge puncher but he's not
24:18trying to be a hero he's trying to land and get out stop listen watch that watch the head all right
24:25ready all right so that's something that perez was not wide he really cannot afford to have a point
24:31taken away because we just don't know that was a good clean right hand right to the forehead stop
24:36straight back and then stop that kamagai right in his tracks
24:52so once again it is uh perez dominant here's one of our favorite guys he sat in your chair a few
25:06times mario lopez knows about boxing works out himself at wild card loves boxing yep there's a
25:15great crowd here tonight it's going to be close sold out or very close to sold out and a good guy too
25:19all right
25:27okay okay listen listen
25:34faint faint faint faint and up the middle
25:37this is round five we come to the rather round six we come to the midway point past the midway point
26:05now of this ten round fight stop stop keep the head up come around let's go box the sun no longer
26:13shining in the ring but these fighters are very well warmed up by now so that's not a factor it's not
26:19going to affect the fighters as the heat might have
26:24and that's swelling under the eye of uh kamagai we have half a fight to go barry that could become a
26:29real factor yeah absolutely and again good combination by paris
26:40let's talk about the jabs coming into this round and again perez almost two to one steve two to one not
26:45that many connects for five rounds only five per round
26:53and kamagai last round oh for 11. bagels yeah that's not his game but and he's not jabbing on
26:59his way in that's affecting his ability to get close he's not punching on his way in period
27:04he takes a right hand flush there it's even on the inside now perez seems to be uh controlling the
27:11action good uppercut and that got kamagai right off him and that's a very bad sign for kamagai if
27:17he gets out foot on the inside three punch combination again and he finished with a very sharp left hand
27:23so good good let him go let him go that guy's starting to look a little bit confused to me
27:28just took a glance at his corner almost a what do i do here come on guys get out of there
27:38economic guy's got a very very high knockout percentage but with so many of those knockouts
27:42coming in japan and we repeat the fact that in japan 140 147 pounds they're not world-class fighters
27:50i don't know if that knockout percentage means much he's a volume guy and he's not able to throw a lot of
27:55shots against perez who is stifling kamagai's aggressiveness just under a minute remaining
28:01here in round six of this ten round fight an overhead right by kamagai but he took a left hand
28:06from perez in exchange another right hand for kamagai better but it's always one at a time for him
28:12almost never one of the time for perez good right hand by perez watch the shoulder
28:20a lot less movement now from perez barry stationary target is exactly what kamagai wants yes not too late
28:44for kamagai let's go box and he cannot afford to have a point taken away especially if he is
28:52starting to get a little bit tired let's go box time
29:00well a reminder uh coming up later tonight on showtime you're going to see this guy alfredo angulo
29:06as he gets it on with eraslande lara and again you know it speaks to styles make fights this should be
29:11a very interesting fight well angulo is your quintessential pressure fighter and lara is your
29:17quintessential southpaw counter puncher we'll see who can use his style more impressively there is
29:23eraslande lara now lives in houston texas 17 and one with a couple of draws he does have 11 knockouts
29:30but he's not necessarily a guy who makes a career out of knocking people out we're here at the home depot
29:35center we expect a sellout crowd pretty close actually to a sellout crowd right now and three
29:42great fights still to come on showtime championship boxing
29:49meantime here's a hero kamagai not yet all done dancing although his face back up starting to be
29:57pretty much of a mess perez is opening the round with movement but he moved a lot less in the fifth
30:09in the sixth excuse me and that gave kamagai chances to land that right hand stop stop maybe
30:16maybe the fight is turning let's see this round will be a key to telling us whether that's the case
30:21or not again perez against the ropes
30:35get a lot of head movement from kamagai but not a lot of punches through ahead up
30:39i guess stop stop you mentioned earlier barry that maybe kamagai a little frustrated maybe a little
30:44confused one of the reasons for that is when he does get his man on the inside or against the ropes he's
30:48been outfought good combination again by perez and you see how perez walks away he doesn't stay there
30:59smart fighter let's go guys all right stop stop stop stop stop watch that back here all right listen
31:07box
31:10lead left uppercut very hard punch to throw
31:18come on
31:21time guy also squaring up a little bit more now as he comes in
31:25because he's walking in and when you don't jab your way in you square yourself up automatically
31:31all right stop stop stop midway through round seven let's go fox we talk about fighters squaring
31:36themselves up when they do that they give their opponent a lot more surface to hit
31:39and they limit their own leverage stop right here stop straight back let's go box
31:50goodbye shot from perez
31:56stop stop
31:59all right let's go
31:59four punch combination for perez unanswered
32:09it's a boxing lesson right now it is and perez perhaps not quite as effective as he was earlier
32:15but he's still winning the rounds and still throwing everything in combination there he is escaping again
32:20from off the ropes now he is breathing through his mouth i'm sure there is a little bit of fatigue at least
32:29but this is round seven barry as he passed the point of no return does he need to knock down
32:32and knock out to win well i think so i think so too that's kind of guy we're talking about
32:47final seconds of round seven
32:55i think they might both feel a bit tired actually
33:03we take a look at action from round seven was kind of guy hurt
33:08by a right hand
33:13well that shot hit him in the ear and then there was one a little higher
33:16to the head maybe it affected his equilibrium you haven't seen common guy back up much
33:20but he did seem a little stunned at least temporarily by that right hand
33:25and we talk about perez not throwing one at a time which is what common guy does
33:29mixing his shots nicely left hook steps a little bit to the left look at that little step to give
33:33him a different angle and as a result wide open shots for a right and a left hook it's been in
33:39combination all night for perez and he's dominating barry
33:44breathe deep breathe deep you're going to lose the fight if you keep uh going to the corners
33:48okay keep boxing in the middle you're doing a good job there this is your fight
34:01so here we go round eight now of this 10-round fight okay stop stop stop and in perez's corner
34:09they again said stay out of the corners you could lose the fight if you get in the corners keep it in
34:13the middle of the ring
34:14show stats in round seven barry 22 connects for perez high of the fight seven connects for common guy
34:25low of the fight that says it all had a good chopping right hand common guy there a moment ago though
34:30but again only one
34:33and you see the numbers for the last round again the high connect in the fight for perez 22 the low
34:40for common guy only seven punches landed you would think maybe his pressure would get to perez
34:46it hasn't worked out that way so far three rounds to go
34:52i think there is a little bit of a fatigue factor really on both sides here right now
35:04but again perez throwing in combination so they might not have quite the zip or the accuracy they once had
35:09but they're coming in bunches
35:14all right stop stop stop stop stop watching let's go one of the keys barry also with common guy he's
35:20landed one shot at a time but when he has landed not once has he heard perez perez only has one loss
35:28that was by technical decision to pablo cano who we know can fight kind of just lost to shane mosley and
35:36fought a very close fight with paulie malachi so right maybe uh you could argue certainly the perez
35:40has been in with better fighters here this is a step up for common guy turned out to be a bigger step
35:46up than he realized and i think that we all realize exactly i thought he was thinking this is a notch
35:52on his belt well guess what
35:57right hand back comma guy up this guy got a good left hook in there but again one shot
36:04he's been chasing a moving target all fight he's been chasing a moving target all fight good right hand
36:10there from common guy might have been his best match of the fight
36:12now he takes a left hand from perez but perez did get himself in trouble in the corner as his
36:22corner told him not to do
36:26he's been chasing a moving target all the time he's been chasing a moving target all the time
36:37kind of guy may be reduced right now to looking for that one big right hand seems to be the punch
36:42he's looking for looks that way doesn't he
36:46let's go stop stop straight back bucks
36:5110 seconds left for round eight
36:53again perez in the corner comma guy gets out of there i don't think he was hurt
36:58common guy did a 360 there yeah he did
37:11do you understand me power right coming i mean there's no left coming i need left in their power
37:19kind of guy for you it's right you're right looks great
37:25right upper everything right throw everything right go for it
37:31two more rounds two more rounds action from round eight
37:41common guy we talked about one punch at a time there's a left hook
37:44and that was probably his best punch he followed with a right hand but then he
37:48stepped back took his foot off the pedal that was not the time to do that that might have been the
37:53closest he's come to having perez in any kind of trouble and they wanted to use his right hand they
37:58said all right hands so we'll see if he's able to do that this is round nine scheduled for ten
38:04and at least stop stop on our cards i think i can speak for you steve it's been the dominant fight for perez
38:10i have a shout out 80 72 i think you did too i gave one round round guy
38:22beautiful boxing three punches and step out by perez stop
38:26guys fight out of that
38:57common guy still bringing it but seems to me as aggressive this is getting nothing but a punch in
39:02the face exactly there's a left hand by kind of guy stop
39:08unable to do any business with the right hand they want him to do
39:12and he's just getting beat to the punches he has been the entire fight
39:16perez has slowed up both with his hands and his feet
39:18common guy has not been able to take advantage
39:24box and from perez's perspective the less fighting over the next round and a half the better
39:37he has not quite with the pop that he once had but still throwing the combination all right stop stop
39:48right here right here let's go box if you're looking for a one punch miracle from common guy again
39:55johan perez never been down
39:59let him go box
40:04guys watch the pants there
40:05guy right now just kind of reduced it to charging at perez but
40:20not with any kind of an idea of what he's going to do when he gets there
40:22an absolutely great game plan by perez's people his trainer is his dad lino perez
40:32and they knew kind of a guy and they realized that a little bit of movement and keeping that distance
40:38was the key and that's what perez has done pretty much the whole fight very few mistakes by perez
40:51so
41:10well also coming up on the championship boxing the brothers charlo this is jermel charlo who will
41:16be fighting tonight as he will be getting it on with demetrius hopkins a veteran
41:24jermel charlo i think it's safe to say he's the best young american fighter along with
41:29andre who's going to fight for a world title at this weight 154 pounds among the hot divisions in
41:35boxing and charlo you want to see him again he fought on show champ and he beat uh harry joe yorgi
41:40very badly and he was very impressive doing it here's a look at demetrius hopkins veteran of 36
41:46fights not a big knockout guy but he's simply said he just knows how to fight well he better he's uh
41:52bernard hopkins uh sister's son you got to you got to know how to fight
41:59it's also a criteria to be old club club keep it clean guys let's go box 10th and final round
42:06kamagai i think it's fair to say although we've seen some very strange decisions here in california
42:12i think it's fair to say kamagai has to knock him out
42:17and it's perez who opens up here in the 10th round watch the shoulder watch the shoulder let's go box
42:26good body shot by kamagai and for those efforts he gets a double left hand
42:30at least early in this round perez not playing it safe punching quite a bit
42:38well there's that expression boxing v first and and perez has been first the entire fight and second
42:44and third and that that's the problem is that kamagai has not been able to counter or punch in between
42:49perez's combination punching see there's an example three punches nothing back from kamagai
42:55and you said it he's been doing it the entire fight
43:08kamagai just laying in now and he takes four or five more punches all right stop right here
43:17kamagai is just about out of gas
43:19really fine focus from perez that's been a factor as much as anything physical
43:28i guess rick that rates are stuck straight back he found the formula he stuck to it for all 10 rounds
43:36he doesn't really need to be fighting comic i hear in his final round at least i don't think so
43:41yet he is and i guess if it ain't broke don't fix it huh yeah and i think perez just stuck his tongue out
43:46not at the fighter but at the crowd as if to say you know i'm playing with this guy
43:59against a different kind of opponent barry kamagai can be
44:03devastating but not against the moving target
44:07and of course the higher up the ladder he goes
44:11the more moving targets he's going to find
44:16stop straight back guys let's go i think good good fighters have a tendency not just to stand in
44:21front of you and get hit right
44:30final 30 seconds of this round and uh a very impressive performance for johan perez
44:35i think he came in here as the b-side fighter and he's going to walk out of here
44:40being considered a very fine prospect a combination from kamagai but a case of too little too late
44:48exactly right and for joan perez is he going to walk into a fight now with the winner of paulian
44:52broner or the winner of berto soda cross probably not but certainly he benefits tremendously from this
44:58exposure and if somebody does make a fight like that well he won't seem like he doesn't belong no
45:02he does he's going to be in the conversation at the very least
45:07so this one is in the books and uh a surprise really right when we talked about
45:13yoshihiro kamagai as perhaps the next uh guy who's going to be in a 147 pound mix here the final number
45:21steve the key number there kamagai he's an offensive machine in 10 rounds he landed 100 punches that's
45:2710 per round that's not going to get it done and the big edge for perez in jabs not a surprise
45:32in power shots a slight edge that is a surprise yeah 17 lands landed punches per round for perez 10
45:39for kamagai it's in the hands of the judges but i think it's academic quite frankly but as i said
45:45and i gotta emphasize this we've seen some strange things well barry you have one round for uh kamagai
45:50i have it 190 but the furthest i'll go within reason is eight rounds to two or uh 98 92 anything
45:59closer than that i just can't see no neither can i and uh we will find out soon enough still to come
46:05of course on showtime championship boxing marcos maidana and josecito lopez that's the main event
46:11on showtime later on this evening and two other outstanding fights on that card as well alfredo
46:17angulo and arislandi lara and demetrius hopkins and jermel charlo so three outstanding fights that's
46:24all still to come as we take it to the center of the wing we'll make it all official now with joe martinez joe
46:35ladies and gentlemen after 10 rounds of boxing we go to the score cards and we have a unanimous
46:39decision here at the judge's point totals judge jonathan davis has it 190. judge carla kai's 98 92
46:48and judge pat connelly 97 93 all three for your winner and now the wba international welterweight champion
46:57from caracas venezuela
