00:00...visit from the king of the four-rounders, Eric Butterbean Esch.
00:03There's Ed White, who comes from Parsons, Tennessee.
00:06That's just outside of Jackson, for those of you who know Tennessee.
00:10And he's never been knocked out.
00:12He's 6'7", 255 pounds.
00:14He's got a record of four wins, one loss, no draws, one KO.
00:18And he's next on the list for the Bean.
00:23Eric Esch, out of Alabama and Bay City, Michigan.
00:27Six feet, 320 pounds, 27 wins, one loss.
00:31That was to a boxer named Mitchell Rose,
00:34who sliced Butterbean up with a jab in Madison Square Garden.
00:3722 KOs for the hard-hitting Bean.
00:43Mitchell Rose, I'm told, wears a T-shirt that is inscribed with,
00:50I beat Butterbean.
00:52I will personally buy another one for Ed White.
00:56If he can pull it off.
00:58There are the numbers, and you see that White is 6 inches taller.
01:02Bean is 65 pounds heavier.
01:04There's only a 2-inch difference in reach.
01:06Ed White, incidentally, was a 34-year-old pro-fighting rookie.
01:10And the rules of this bout are the same as for the bout which preceded it.
01:14But this, of course, being a Butterbean bout, is scheduled for four rounds.
01:18Let's go to Michael Buffer.
01:20Ladies and gentlemen, from Caesars Palace, Top Rank Incorporated,
01:24along with your King of Beers, Budweiser, present a special four-round bout.
01:29This is for the International Boxing Association's four-round super-heavyweight championship of the world.
01:39The three judges scoring this contest are Dick Houck, Art Lurie, and Paul Smith.
01:45And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action referee, Joe Cortez.
01:51Introducing first, fighting out of the red corner, wearing white and weighing 255 pounds.
01:58From Parsons, Tennessee, he brings a record of 4-1 with 1 KO to his credit.
02:04He is the challenger, ladies and gentlemen, Ed Nujak-White.
02:14And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner,
02:18wearing the stars and bars, red, white, and blue,
02:22and weighing in at 320 pounds.
02:25His professional record, 27-1.
02:2822 KOs from Jesper, Alabama.
02:32Here is the IBA four-round super-heavyweight champion,
02:38an American legend, Butterbean!
02:50All right, gentlemen, we went up with the rules in the dressing room.
02:54I expect a good, clean fight.
02:56Obey my commands at all times.
02:59Shake hands.
03:00Good luck to both of you.
03:01All right.
03:03All right.
03:04All right.
03:05Well, Larry, a benedictory comment on the bean?
03:09Well, Jim, did we just go from the ridiculous to the sublime,
03:13or the sublime to the ridiculous?
03:15We went from the ridiculous to the ridiculous.
03:17Oh, boy.
03:18Gotcha.
03:19Roy, what do you think of the bean?
03:21You know, I have to admire the bean for his courage to get up and do what he does.
03:25I think boxing's gave him a new life.
03:28And, you know, you have to look at the positives on what guys do.
03:31You know, bean has a lot of people that follow him.
03:33He brings great entertainment to the sport.
03:36And I admire him for what he does.
03:38Ed White starts out sticking the jab and trying to land a right hand behind it.
03:43Big Ed is a substance abuse counselor for kids at his own high school in Parsons, Tennessee.
03:49And in the early going, he's getting the better of the Butterbean.
03:55Remember, if you're a big man like Ed and you can work effectively behind the jab,
03:59you've got a chance.
04:00That's what Mitchell Rose did against Bean in Madison Square Garden.
04:03Rose was 1-6-1 on his own professional record when he came in
04:08and thoroughly dominated Butterbean.
04:11That was a big upset.
04:12Yeah, they looked all over New York for somebody Butterbean could beat
04:15and they couldn't find anyone.
04:22Butterbean takes a punch pretty well, as he's showing you here.
04:25Greening through the assault of Ed White, but Butterbean's not scoring much yet.
04:31Yep, Butterbean is trying to let Ed White punch himself out.
04:34Then Butterbean will look to land a big punch and knock him out.
04:37Yep, and Ed's already holding his hands well down below his waist,
04:40and that'll be dangerous.
04:42And he's breathing very hard.
04:45And he's separating his hands widely when he throws,
04:48and sooner or later he's going to get tagged.
04:58Right hand body shot, left hand upstairs for Butterbean.
05:02Ed White slowing down dramatically now after a high-paced or fast-paced first minute.
05:08Another body shot by Butterbean.
05:10Big Ed starting to breathe pretty heavy.
05:18Oh, great right hand by Ed White.
05:21Excellent right hand.
05:22That hurt the bean.
05:23Yep, he's wobbling.
05:26But he'll fight.
05:29And I have to give him credit.
05:31He will fight.
05:33Butterbean with a possible big-money date
05:35coming up against hockey player Marty McSorley.
05:39And all I can say about that is, Marty, think twice.
05:55Another big right hand for White.
05:58Butterbean appears content to work to the body
06:02and try to wear Ed down a little bit here.
06:06Bill, you have to lean toward Butterbean
06:08because he has the experience.
06:10You have to lean toward Butterbean
06:12because he tilts the earth in his direction.
06:16He got no choice.
06:21Ed does have a pretty good right hand, though, Jim.
06:24I have to give him that credit.
06:30Out of knockdown.
06:33And quickly, let's go to Brunel Whitaker's locker room
06:35where referee Mills Lane
06:36is offering pre-fight instructions.
06:38Okay, Brunel, this is for the championship.
06:40I know it's an important fight for you.
06:42I understand.
06:42Lose the Chief second.
06:44If there's any problem in the ring,
06:45I'm going to talk to him.
06:45Nobody else, okay?
06:46The paper talks all over.
06:47It's the WBC title.
06:49No three-knockdown rule.
06:50Go as long as I say it can.
06:51If you knock his mouthpiece out,
06:53if you lose yours, keep fighting.
06:55When the action slows, I'll get time,
06:57get it washed out, and get it back.
06:59If you get in close,
07:00as long as any one man's got two hands free,
07:01fight it out.
07:02If I ask you to stop punching,
07:04please just take one short step back, okay?
07:06If you score knockdown,
07:08go to the furthest neutral corner
07:09and see that I'll wave you back.
07:11It's a puncher's ring.
07:12It's a big ring,
07:12but it's a puncher's ring,
07:13nice and soft, okay?
07:15If it goes the distance,
07:17will you touch gloves in the last round?
07:19Very good.
07:19I'll make sure I get squared away
07:21with the other guy, okay?
07:21You don't have to do that.
07:23Now, I understand,
07:23but I mean,
07:24both of you agree to, okay?
07:26Protect yourself at all times, all right?
07:29No standing eight count,
07:31but if you get hung up in the ropes
07:33or you go down,
07:34you must take eight, okay?
07:35If the cut man's in,
07:36Lou, you'll have to be out, okay?
07:37And the paper talk is all over,
07:39and this is where we're going to get it on.
07:41And none of the clowning and spinning
07:43and all that kind of stuff, okay?
07:45Fair enough, brother.
07:46All right, I want to promise, all right?
07:47Good luck to you.
07:48Good luck to you.
07:51Mills Lane, criminal court judge
07:54from Reno, Nevada.
07:55Oh!
07:56Butterbean took a hard right hand
07:58from Ed White.
08:00He just keeps coming
08:01with his own left hand.
08:06Oh!
08:07Haymaker right hand
08:09by Butterbean,
08:10and Ed White paying the price
08:12for dropping his hands so low.
08:16Cortez finally picks up the count.
08:17Hey, hey, how you feel?
08:20You all right with him?
08:21Yeah.
08:22Feels great.
08:28White still doesn't have his hands up.
08:32Going to give Butterbean
08:33too many chances.
08:41That'll do it.
08:42That's it.
08:43That's it.
08:44That's it.
08:44That's it.
08:44Crowd goes nuts.
08:45Blood streams down
08:46Butterbean's face
08:47from the cut under his left eye,
08:50but Ed White is gone.
08:52Curses foiled again.
08:54Ha, ha, ha, ha.
08:56Ha, ha, ha.
08:58Ha, ha, ha.
09:08And Ed White's trainer,
09:11who is a fellow named Bill Johnson,
09:14will no doubt say to him at some point,
09:16you know, you gotta keep your hands up.
09:21Let's take another look at this, Roy.
09:24Ed White had never made more than $400
09:27in a fight before this one.
09:29They found him in Parsons, Tennessee.
09:35Here's the first knockdown.
09:36Obviously doesn't have the condition
09:38to go at the pace he was starting the fight at,
09:41although he was a college basketball player.
09:43Watch this haymaker right now.
09:45Harvey Lipscomb for four years.
09:49David Lipscomb.
09:50David Lipscomb in Nashville, Tennessee.
09:52Yep.
09:52Oof, what a haymaker.
09:57Aren't too many times
09:58in a so-called professional prize fight, Roy,
10:01that you'll get to see a guy
10:02bring a right cross up from the canvas.
10:04Ha, ha, ha.
10:08And this was the finish.
10:14Eric, that was sensational.
10:18Did you hear Bob Arum in the background
10:19telling Butterbean
10:21that it was a sensational performance?
10:23Yeah, I heard.
10:24I love this.
10:25And White is one of the better opponents
10:27they've had him in with.
10:28Ha, ha, ha.
10:31Not unmarked,
10:32but nevertheless victorious.
10:34Let's go to Michael Buffer.
10:36Ladies and gentlemen,
10:37referee Joe Cortez
10:39calls a halt to the bout
10:40at one minute,
10:4214 seconds of round number two.
10:45The winner by TKO victory
10:47and still the IBA
10:50four-round
10:51super heavyweight champion,
10:54Butter
10:56Bean.
11:02And while you revel in another
11:04big Bean moment,
11:05you heard Mills Lane
11:06in Brunel Whitaker's locker room
11:08or dressing room as it is.
11:09Let's go back to Oscar De La Hoya's
11:11dressing room
11:12for more of referee Mills Lane.
11:13Champ, this is with the title,
11:15WBC.
11:16No three-knockdown rule
11:17goes as long as I say it can.
11:18Must take eight.
11:20No standing eight count,
11:21though,
11:21unless you get hung up
11:22in the ropes,
11:22and it would fall
11:23but for the rope, okay?
11:24If you score a knockdown,
11:25go to the furthest corner.
11:26It's a puncher's ring.
11:27It's big,
11:28but it's nice and soft.
11:29Go to the furthest corner
11:30and I'll wave you back, okay?
11:32If you get in close,
11:33as long as any one man
11:34got two hands,
11:34he'll let you fight.
11:35When I think you're tied up,
11:36I'll ask you to step back.
11:37Please take one short step back, okay?
11:39If you knock his mouthpiece out
11:41or you lose yours,
11:41keep fighting.
11:42When the action slows,
11:43I'll call time
11:44and get it back to you.
11:46As long as you're in close,
11:47fight it out.
11:48Now,
11:49I've already talked
11:50to Whitaker about it.
11:51I said no cute stuff,
11:52no spinning,
11:53none of that stuff.
11:54The paper talks all over.
11:55I know how important this is.
11:56The one thing
11:57they want to be careful of
11:58is when you go out
11:58with that long,
11:59beautiful jab,
12:00keep your hand closed, okay?
12:02Keep your hand closed.
12:04Whitaker says
12:05if it goes the distance,
12:06he will touch gloves.
12:07Is that okay with you?
12:08Yeah.
12:09All right,
12:09very good.
12:10I know how important
12:11this fight is.
12:12Great credit to the institution.
12:13Good luck to you.
12:14Protect yourself,
12:15okay?
12:15Good luck, big guy.
12:16Okay, bye.
12:18All right,
12:19so Oscar De La Hoya
12:20maintaining that
12:21very serious focus
12:22that he has all week long
12:24leading up to this fight.
12:25You know,
12:25many people assume
12:26that welterweight bouts
12:27are synonymous
12:28with style and skill only.
12:30You know,
12:31that's not always the case
12:32and it certainly wasn't the case
12:33back in the mid-50s
12:35when two brutal epic wars
12:37were staged
12:38by Mr. De Basilio
12:39and, of course,
12:40Tony DeMarco,
12:41and they are the subjects
12:42of our welterweight flashback.
12:59These all-out guys
13:01give this cruel
13:02but sometimes exhilarating sport
13:04some much-needed vitality.
13:06One could even say
13:07virility.
13:10In 1955,
13:12a pair of ring gladiators
13:13engaged in two of the most
13:14savage wars
13:15in boxing history.
13:17In their first showdown
13:18in June,
13:19champion Tony DeMarco
13:21and Carmen Basilio
13:22challenged each other
13:23with their
13:23do-or-die styles.
13:25Tony came to me,
13:26I went to him,
13:27you know,
13:28we were both back and forth.
13:29I moved a little bit,
13:31he moved a little bit,
13:32but we were both together
13:35most of the time
13:36punching it out.
13:37We were just
13:38banging each other
13:39and we wouldn't stop,
13:41he wouldn't stop
13:41throwing punches,
13:43and I wouldn't stop
13:43throwing punches.
13:44Basilio barely outlasted
13:46DeMarco
13:47with a 12th round KO
13:48and was crowned
13:49the king
13:50of the welterweights.
13:51The stakes
13:52and brutality
13:53soared in the rematch
13:55only five months later.
13:56It was a life and death fight.
13:58It was similar to the first
14:01but only more devastating.
14:04Harder punches,
14:05faster punches.
14:07DeMarco dominated again
14:09in this second fight
14:10and in the 7th round
14:11almost grabbed his title
14:13back with one big punch.
14:15I saw that left hook coming
14:16and I didn't bother
14:18to pick up my hand
14:19to block it
14:19like a dummy
14:20and he hit me
14:21right on the chin.
14:22And amazingly,
14:23he just,
14:24he took it
14:25but, I mean,
14:26it hurt him tremendously.
14:29In fact,
14:29he still claims
14:30that's the hardest punch
14:31he's ever got hit
14:32in his green career.
14:34And all he said
14:35is don't go down,
14:36don't go down,
14:37don't go down
14:37because there's always
14:38a chance
14:39that they might have
14:39stopped the fight.
14:40And somehow,
14:41Basilio did survive.
14:44DeMarco,
14:44sensing victory,
14:46mercilessly
14:46came off his stool
14:47to end
14:48the bloody brawl.
14:49I was determined
14:50to knock him out.
14:51I didn't focus
14:52on the points.
14:54I was ahead, yes.
14:55I didn't focus on it.
14:56So instead of moving
14:57away from the left hook,
14:59I moved toward it
14:59and I blocked it
15:00and I hit him
15:01on the left hook
15:01in the shoulder point.
15:03And I think that took
15:04all the rest
15:05of the fight out of him.
15:07Lightning struck twice.
15:09Basilio survived
15:10with another
15:1112th round knockout,
15:12this time
15:13two seconds sooner.
15:14The 24 rounds of hell
15:16were embraced
15:17by both men
15:18and forever
15:19defined their
15:20championship hearts.
15:22I never liked
15:22to fight easy fights.
15:24It didn't prove anything.
15:26You gotta take it
15:27and you have to give it to.
15:28That's constant
15:29to the fighter.
15:31That's what fighters
15:32know about.
15:33More than 40 years later,
15:35the drama and legend
15:37of these twin
15:38non-stop welterweight battles
15:39won't fade away.
15:43Two outstanding
15:44battles indeed
15:45and of course
15:46all of you fight fans
15:46know that Carmen Basilio
15:48moved up in weight class
15:49to the middleweight ranks
15:50and of course
15:51he beat Sugar Ray Robinson
15:52in one of their
15:53two matchups.
15:54Sugar Ray Robinson,
15:55the man upon whom
15:56the label pound for pound
15:58was first affixed to.
16:00All right folks
16:01and moving up in weight,
16:02Oscar De La Hoya
16:03moving up in weight
16:04trying to take the title
16:05from Pernell Whitaker.
16:07De La Hoya studied
16:08an awful lot of tape
16:09of Whitaker,
16:09said he is fully aware
16:11of a lot of his weaknesses,
16:12those that Roy Jones
16:13has and will talk about
16:15later tonight
16:15including Whitaker's
16:17ability or inability
16:19to keep his feet
16:20on the canvas.
16:21De La Hoya says
16:22he will take full advantage
16:23of that.
16:23Whitaker does not look
16:24at tape of his opponents
16:25but rest assured
16:26he knows all about
16:27the strengths
16:28of Oscar De La Hoya.
16:30Up next,
16:31it will be a bantamweight
16:33battle between
16:33Paulie Ayala
16:34and Mr. Lopez.
16:36Paulie Ayala
16:37a very talented fighter
16:39indeed.
16:39As a matter of fact
16:40he started fighting
16:40at age four.
16:42Could not find
16:43any opponents
16:43in his age range
16:44so he had to fight
16:46older guys
16:46six and seven years
16:48of age.
16:49Lost all of his fights
16:50against the older ones
16:51but he kept a list
16:51of all of those opponents
16:53and as he got older
16:54he retraced his steps
16:56and beat every one of them.
16:58He hopes to continue
16:58the trend going tonight.
17:00Right now let's take you
17:01right back downstairs
17:02to Jim Lampley.
17:03All right.
