00:00Is it bittersweet when people bring this topic up to you?
00:04You know what?
00:06I think more people nowadays realize what we were able to do.
00:10I know we didn't win any of them, but you have to think about what our mindset was after we
00:17would lose one Super Bowl
00:19and the way we did driving down the field the last second when you miss a field goal and we
00:24lose.
00:25But to do that year in and year out, continue to fight back what you hear outside the locker room,
00:33sometimes it bums you out.
00:35But you know what?
00:36Nowadays, I think more people understand what we were able to accomplish four in a row
00:42and to be able to come back year after year after year won't happen again.
00:47I mean, that's amazing.
00:48I mean, yeah, of course, we would love to win one, one, maybe four in a row.
00:52But I don't think if we were one in a couple in a row, we would have made it to
00:57four.
00:57We'd have too much fun.
00:59And the bottom line is we're all still very, very close.
01:03We still keep in touch with each other.
01:06It comes to my golf classic.
01:09But what we were able to do, it started at the top, and that was with our head coach, Marv
01:13Levy.
01:14He was amazing how he was able to pull us all together each and every year at training camp saying,
01:21okay, here we go, we're going to start all over again.
01:24And I remember after our third Super Bowl, I wasn't sure, Dan, how everybody was going to react once they
01:34came in
01:34because all the negativity you heard when you're traveling around the country,
01:39oh, we don't want to see the Buffalo Bills in there again.
01:41And our motto as the first day of camp was, you know what, after Marv talked to us on the
01:48first day,
01:49we all knew our motto was, let's go and piss everybody off.
01:53Let's go back for four.
01:54And we did.
01:56And unfortunately, everybody knows we did not win.
01:59But our team stays as close as you possibly can get as an organization, as a team.
02:05And I love each and every guy that I played with and never pointed a finger at anybody.
02:10We always had fun.
02:11And we enjoyed the games, as you probably heard, after the game at my house.
02:17But as I sit here today, we're all still pulled for each other.
02:23So, what coach do you think, or maybe they gave you two different things.
02:28What did Howard Schnellenberger teach you?
02:30And what did Marv Levy teach you that made you a Hall of Fame player?
02:36Well, number one, toughness, Howard Schnellenberger.
02:39I mean, I remember, you know, the practice.
02:42We'd have three three-and-a-half-hour practices.
02:44You'd get one water break halfway through.
02:46Now they would sue you.
02:48You'd be fired if you only gave the players one water break.
02:52But the toughness that he showed, he was more like a drill sergeant.
02:58He was something.
02:59When he would speak, you would listen.
03:00When he would call you into his office, you're like, oh, no, why?
03:06Why am I going in?
03:07You're all worried.
03:08But after that, the total respect that we had for him was amazing.
03:14And then, of course, going on and playing in the USFL for two years under Jack Parkey and having him
03:21as our head coach.
03:22And, of course, Miles Davis doing that run-shoot offense.
03:25That was amazing where I really learned the passing game.
03:29And then, of course, Marv.
03:31Mark put his job on the line in 1990 when he handed over the offense and said, I wanted to
03:41be able to call my own plays.
03:42And he allowed that.
03:44So he put his job security on the line.
03:47And I loved it, though.
03:49I mean, that's how I lived my life.
03:51My mother used to always tell me, son, you better slow down.
03:55But that's how I lived my life.
03:57And that's how I still live it today.
03:58I used to love calling my plays.
04:02When you have Andre Reid, James Loft, and Don Beebe as your wide receivers.
04:06And, of course, I had Thurman Thomas in my backfield.
04:10Why wouldn't you?
04:11I mean, that was something I loved.
04:13But Marv was a guy that knew what to say and when to say it.
04:17And he's the guy that we came up with the saying, where else would you rather be than right here,
04:24right now?
04:25That's our Buffalo Bills motto.
04:27That's what we live by.
