An eight-year-old UKG student was crushed to death after falling through a broken metal sheet on the floor of a moving school bus in the Dholna area near Aligarh–Kasganj border on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased, Ananya, a resident of Nay Bhai village under Dadon police station limits in Aligarh, was returning home from Mount International School in Budhiya Kaser along with her elder brother.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 3 pm near Nagla Sadhu/Birhara village in the Dholna area of Kasganj. The bus had first dropped children in Dholna and was heading towards Gangiri when a portion of the floor beneath Ananya’s seat, located above the rear wheel, suddenly gave way. She fell directly onto the road and was run over by the same bus.

Her brother, who was travelling with her, raised an alarm, shouting at the driver to stop the bus. The driver halted the vehicle, lifted the injured child and allegedly threatened the brother not to inform anyone about the incident.

The driver then reportedly informed the girl’s father about her “injury” and drove towards Malasai intersection. By the time she was brought there, Ananya had succumbed to her injuries.

Villagers who witnessed the bus fleeing chased it for nearly two kilometres and intercepted it at Malasai intersection. The driver was caught and allegedly beaten by an angry crowd. The bus was also vandalised, and locals blocked the Aligarh–Kasganj road in protest.

On receiving information, police from Gangiri, Chharra and Dadon stations reached the spot and pacified the crowd after nearly an hour. The body was sent to Kasganj for postmortem, as the accident occurred within Dholna police station limits.

CO Chharra Sanjeev Tomar said the bus floor was broken at the seat where the girl had been sitting, leading to her fall under the wheel. He admitted that the vehicle appeared to be in poor condition and further investigation would determine whether it was operating without valid fitness certification. A checking drive against unsafe school buses has been announced.

The girl’s father, Ravi Kumar, who runs a public service centre at Gangiri intersection, has lodged a complaint against the school management. Police said legal action will proceed based on the complaint and postmortem report.

The tragic incident has left the family devastated ahead of Holi celebrations, with relatives and villagers demanding strict action against those responsible.
