00:00Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, look at that Volkswagen.
00:02When Frank sees the VW, he's got my attention.
00:05No way.
00:06Mike's in heaven here.
00:07Ew.
00:10Nah.
00:11It's a 58 model, 23 window deluxe.
00:14I'd pay 4,000 bucks the way it sits.
00:18Here it is, here it is, here it is.
00:20Oh, this could be my lucky day.
00:22Oh my God.
00:23I have literally caught the devil about all this junk being around the property.
00:28I'm never going to collect junk.
00:30I'm interested in that clock.
00:31I'd be happy for you to have it too.
00:33Yeah.
00:33Mama ain't happy nobody's happy.
00:36Barbed wire, tall fences, no trespassing signs, the Fort Knox of junk.
00:42The great thing about this place is nobody gets in here.
00:45Oh my God.
00:46What is this?
00:47Some of this stuff's been here 20, 30 years, so everything that you touch can be a treasure.
00:53I'm Mike Wolf.
00:54And I'm Frank Freck.
00:56And we're pickers.
00:58We travel the back roads of America looking to buy rusty gold.
01:04We make a living telling the history of America one piece at a time.
01:17You know, Frank, we really need to start thinking about our retirement plan.
01:21You know, I'm thinking we're talking about retirement plan.
01:23What I'd like to do, I'd like to get myself like about a 12-unit hotel up in Wisconsin somewhere.
01:28Like the places we stay?
01:30Yeah.
01:30And just wake up.
01:31Hey, how y'all doing?
01:32Where are you from?
01:33Hey.
01:34What?
01:34You got anything to sell?
01:36Well, here's the deal.
01:37You know what I would love to do?
01:38What?
01:39You know, I'm a hot dog guy.
01:40Oh, yeah.
01:41Okay.
01:42So, could I set up a hot dog stand in your parking lot there?
01:45Of course you could.
01:46You know what I'm saying?
01:46I think it would work out.
01:47It could be a gimmick to get people in.
01:49We need more 12 rooms, though.
01:51Hey, what's up?
01:52Hey.
01:52Danny D.
01:53Good morning to you, girl.
01:54Daniel.
01:55How are my scrappy little boys today?
01:57We're doing good.
01:58What do you got?
01:59What's going on?
01:59I got a real great lead.
02:01You're going to want to go toe-to-toe with it.
02:02Mike and Gwen Gaddy, okay?
02:04Mike, really interesting character.
02:06He actually was a boxer for years and years.
02:08He actually kind of inherited all of his dad's stuff when his dad passed away.
02:12And he's been collecting on his own for 50-plus years.
02:16But his lovely wife is not all about it.
02:18She's not so interested in the collection.
02:19Oh, excited about it.
02:20We've heard that before.
02:21All right.
02:22Send us their information and the coordinates of this pick.
02:25All right.
02:26Bye.
02:32All right.
02:32Here it is.
02:33Here it is.
02:33Oh, yeah.
02:34There you go.
02:35Yeah, this looks like Iowa, man.
02:36He's got the combines.
02:37He's got the combines.
02:38When we roll up, it looks like a little cabin in the woods.
02:41But beyond that, you can see all the buildings behind the house.
02:45This place looks ripe for picking.
02:47All right.
02:47You got a flyer?
02:48I don't have one.
02:49I thought you were going to get them printed at the hotel.
02:51Oh, I forgot.
02:54I'm looking around.
02:55This guy's got tractors.
02:56He's got cars.
02:57He's got sheds.
02:59He's got barns.
03:00This guy's got a lot of everything.
03:03Remember, this guy's a boxer.
03:04Don't piss him off.
03:05I know I don't want to get a left hook.
03:06Hey, are you Gwen?
03:08Yes.
03:09Nice to meet you.
03:09I'm Mike.
03:09Nice to meet you.
03:10Pleasure.
03:10Hey, Mike.
03:11Nice to meet you.
03:12This guy's got a grip, Frank.
03:13What's up?
03:14Nice to meet you.
03:15This guy's got the anaconda grip.
03:17Danielle said you're a boxer, man.
03:19All of a sudden, I realized we're picking the Jack and Alana junk.
03:23We heard a little something about one person wants to get rid of a few things.
03:26Oh, this could be my lucky day.
03:29Oh, my gosh.
03:30How long have you guys been here?
03:32Well, we've been together 37 years.
03:35I'd say more like almost 38 years.
03:37A long time.
03:38Our whole life, just about.
03:41It's been a wonderful relationship.
03:43We've become best friends.
03:45But I'm never going to collect junk.
03:47Is this where you grew up?
03:49Well, from the time I was about 13 years old, my dad bought this farm and farmed it.
03:54And the CIS, if you look out there, you'll see his name on some of the farm equipment.
03:59This whole place is my daddy because my dad bought this farm and then I wound up buying
04:03it from him.
04:04And that's why it's so special to us.
04:07Can we look around a little bit?
04:08We can do that.
04:08Which way you want to go first?
04:10We'll go to the backyard first.
04:11Might as well.
04:12All right.
04:12You guys lead the way.
04:14So what kind of vehicles do you have?
04:15From the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s.
04:18What kind of stuff do you have from the 30s?
04:20He has everything he's ever owned.
04:21Everything.
04:22Well, yeah.
04:23When people Mike's age have kept everything they've ever owned, we know we're in for some
04:27good picking.
04:27When's the last time you were down here, Gwen?
04:29I try not to come down here.
04:31Mike's got five acres here.
04:33There's piles of metal.
04:35There's fleets of cars.
04:36There's old farm stuff here.
04:38Well, that right there is a 49 Kaiser.
04:40Now, are these all cars of people you knew?
04:42Most of them I know who they came from, yeah.
04:44All those vehicles, I can tell a story on just about every one of them.
04:49So it's a lot of memories.
04:51When we open the building, I'll show you the car that we dated in.
04:54Yeah.
04:54It's the Corvette.
04:56So this guy had the big guns.
04:57He had the Corvette.
04:58He had the big hair.
04:59He had the big hair, too.
05:01Did you have your hands in his mow it?
05:03Oh, all the time.
05:03All the time.
05:04Whoa, look at this!
05:05As soon as he opened the door, I could see this place was packed.
05:10See how the lights can play, Frankie?
05:11Tough one.
05:12Are you guys still good?
05:13I'll drive it.
05:13Yeah, we have a good one.
05:14But it's really hard to fall into now.
05:16So I'm looking around in this building.
05:18There's not just a boxing ring in there, but there's a lot of 1930s cars.
05:21Wow, that's cool.
05:23So did your father collect cars?
05:25Is that how you got interested in them?
05:26No, he didn't.
05:27My daddy wasn't the pack rat I was.
05:29I have literally caught the devil about all this shit around the property.
05:35I don't think she likes it as much as I do.
05:37But if that's his worst habit, I guess I'll live with it.
05:41Frank, this is cool.
05:44What's this?
05:45Yeah, old crank record player.
05:48Frank, you want to look at it?
05:49Yeah, let's take a look at it here.
05:50This old phonograph player was made by a French company called Pathé.
05:54It's got a really cool decal on it.
05:55Oh, that's neat.
05:56This has great age to it.
05:58And considering it's about 100 years old, it's still in pretty decent shape.
06:01The box is pretty ornate.
06:03It is pretty cool.
06:03It's got all the gingerbread on it here and stuff.
06:06So your interest in older things is a wide range.
06:10Anything from cars to...
06:12Anything.
06:13How does he get this stuff, Lynn?
06:14I mean, do you go to flea markets, ride sales, four to miles?
06:16He's done some of all of it.
06:17He goes in dumpsters.
06:19We like that.
06:19All right.
06:20We love guys like Mike.
06:21They're dumpster divers.
06:22They do it for the love of the hunt.
06:24We're the same way.
06:25And right now, I have my sights set on this record player.
06:28Mike, what would you have to have for that?
06:30How many things are worth the hundred dollars?
06:32It might be if it was all there and was playing.
06:34To me, it'd probably be worth about 40 bucks.
06:37All right.
06:37How about 50?
06:40How much do you want...
06:41I'll tell you what.
06:41Let's look at this telephone over here, too.
06:43This is an early crank telephone from around the same time as the phonograph.
06:47You'd turn the crank to be connected to an operator, and then the operator would place your call.
07:02All right.
07:03Missing the mouthpiece.
07:04I know it is.
07:06Friends, co-workers, everybody.
07:08They call me the bundler.
07:08What would you have to have for both pieces?
07:13You better have the way.
07:14$100.
07:16$100?
07:17That's just what I was thinking.
07:19Oh, my God.
07:20He actually made a deal.
07:22Okay, you're doing good.
07:23Did you break the ice?
07:24I broke the ice.
07:25You know what's great about these items is both of them represent what was high-tech back a hundred years
07:30ago.
07:31And if he has more items like this, this is going to be a great pick.
07:34Are you still boxing?
07:35Well, you know what?
07:35I just train fighters now.
07:37Okay.
07:38Now, I used to train at the same gym with Evander Holyfield.
07:41No kidding.
07:41What town?
07:42That was in Atlanta.
07:43What I got to respect about this dude is he's 63.
07:45He's been boxing his whole life.
07:47He was a Golden Glove champion.
07:49I mean, he is one tough dude.
07:51I had to make him stop, though, because I want to keep half of a brain.
07:55She didn't want me to wind up.
07:57She didn't like y'all punch drunk?
07:58Yeah.
07:59What's Bubba's walk?
08:00So, as I did that in memory of my dad, dad's gone, and I put Bubba's walk.
08:04And now I know where I got the aggression to box.
08:07Uh-huh.
08:07They said in Alabama, nobody messed with Bubba Getty.
08:11My dad, he came to watch me every fight.
08:14So, how long has this ring been set up in here?
08:1630, 30-something years.
08:18A long time.
08:19There is no amount of money that could get me into the ring with Mike.
08:22But you know what?
08:22I'm ready for round two when it comes to picking.
08:24Can I crawl across this car?
08:26Uh, for safety reasons, you might have to come back this way.
08:29I like this light shade.
08:31Dang!
08:32Hey, how about those old tubas up there?
08:34There's more horns on the floor.
08:36Stacked up along the wall, Mike's got the rest of this brass band.
08:40You got one.
08:41When I look at them, I see a statement piece.
08:43When you pile them all together, it's like a work of art.
08:46Here's a saxophone.
08:48Where'd these come out of?
08:49Came out of a nightclub in Daytona Beach, Florida.
08:52They were hanging up for decoration?
08:53Yeah, they had them for decoration.
08:54We just happened to be on vacation one year, and this nightclub was in the hotel.
08:59And they were going to trash all this stuff.
09:01So, they asked if he was interested in any of it.
09:04There was hardly any room for us in that van on that trip, because he loaded that thing completely up.
09:10So, how long have you had these?
09:1230 years.
09:13So, every time we go somewhere, I buy something.
09:14There are no limits.
09:16You got enough to start your own band, man.
09:17That's what I'm talking about.
09:18Art's a band.
09:19Look at that.
09:19What are you thinking out of these, Mike?
09:21Don't sucker punch me.
09:23And I look at Mike, I look at the instruments, and I'm like, okay, I'm going to become the bundler.
09:28I'm interested in that clock.
09:30I'd be happy for you to have it, too.
09:32Yeah?
09:33This would have been a clock that would have been on a commercial building.
09:36Imagine this clock lit up with a neon back in the day.
09:39Awesome piece.
09:40Is the clock something you'd sell?
09:42I think so.
09:44$300 for the clock and all the horns.
09:47Woo!
09:48Whoa.
09:49I think that's a good price.
09:51He comes at me with an uppercut.
09:53$300.
09:54I hit him with the left hook.
09:55I tell you what, Mike, I'm going to blow it out here, and I'll offer you two.
09:59You better take it.
10:01Mom ain't happy, nobody's happy.
10:03I'm going to let you off the hook this time.
10:05I'll take $200.
10:06All right.
10:07All right, $200.
10:08Boom.
10:09He hit the mat.
10:10Woo!
10:11It was my day.
10:14All right, what do you got over here?
10:16Cream separator.
10:17Just some cotton gin.
10:18This cage turns.
10:19Oh, watch your fingers.
10:20See in there?
10:21Yeah.
10:22I gotcha.
10:23It turns and separates the seed.
10:24Gotcha.
10:25So these pieces are off of there?
10:27Yeah.
10:27I love these cotton gin pieces because they're cast iron, they're decorative, and they're part
10:31of Southern culture.
10:32Kind of cool looking.
10:33What era would you say that's from?
10:351915, right there.
10:36December.
10:36That's the patent date.
10:37These end plates have been sitting out here in the elements for who knows how long.
10:41They're just the way I like them.
10:42In rust, we trust.
10:57What do you got on the cast iron with the cotton on it?
11:00Two, three, four, you got five of them.
11:04Yeah, I don't know that I want to sell all of them.
11:06How many would you sell?
11:07Maybe a couple.
11:08About $100 for a pair.
11:11If you love rust and you love history and you're from the South, these plates are perfect
11:16for you.
11:16But at $50 a piece, there's no way for me to make a profit.
11:20How about $25 a piece for two of them before they completely crumble into the ground?
11:25All right, that sounds good.
11:26Are you noticing that happening a lot around here or something?
11:29Yeah, I see them well.
11:30I can't take this whole cotton gin with me, but these plates capture the beauty and the
11:34essence of what this machine once was.
11:37Oh, here we go.
11:39I have never seen fans like this before.
11:41I'll do $500.
11:42No.
11:43Gwen's been on our side all day, but now that we found something she's attached to,
11:47things are different.
11:48You gotta make a girl cry.
11:53Okay, don't hold this against me.
11:56This is Christmas city in here.
11:58Who doesn't love Santa Claus?
12:00Everything is Christmas.
12:02Wow.
12:03You know, around the neighborhood, there's always the one family that has the biggest
12:06and best Christmas decorations.
12:08Around these parts, I think it's Mike and Gwen.
12:11How long does that take to set up, Mike?
12:13Three months to set the decorations up.
12:14You know, it just started out with ho, ho, ho.
12:17And so in 21 years, it's grown to this whole five acres being covered, and I'm being covered.
12:24You got Martin's super target.
12:25There's a lot to look at.
12:26This is year-round picking.
12:28That's a big hawk.
12:29What do you got on him?
12:30I'm not gonna sell it.
12:31You don't want to sell it?
12:32No.
12:33All right.
12:33I like stuffed animals.
12:34Oh, Mike.
12:35Mike, this light-up 1950s Coca-Cola clock has that great iconic look.
12:40And for its age, it's an amazing shape.
12:43What are you thinking on this?
12:45Remember, I'm already down.
12:46You don't have to knock me down.
12:48You know what?
12:49Probably too much sentimental value on that to let it go.
12:52I'd like to.
12:53Where did it come from?
12:54My dad had it.
12:55That was your dad's, my dad's.
12:57I think it's great you have all this stuff in here.
12:59Oh, my gosh.
13:00He has it all.
13:01I can basically put a number on all of Mike's stuff, but to him, it's priceless because it was his
13:06father's, so I'm stepping away.
13:12What do you got on this pep sign here?
13:14I don't even think he's thought about it.
13:18Plastic.
13:20Yeah, at least 25.
13:23Plastic signs aren't as popular as the porcelain ones, but you know what?
13:26This is a great promotional piece, and it'll be an easy sell.
13:28How about 20?
13:30I won't even plug it in.
13:32I say sold.
13:34I say deal.
13:35Okay.
13:36Dang.
13:38Because I know that doesn't have any sentimental value.
13:40Okay.
13:41I won't make him sell it if it has sentimental value.
13:43All right.
13:43R.M. Rose Company Distillers.
13:46That one is an old cylinder player.
13:49How about these old peanut machines?
13:52Oh, yeah.
13:52I forgot about the peanut machines.
13:54Remember back in the day when you basically had to beg your mother and father for that nickel to get
13:59that peanut or that piece of candy?
14:01Now, if you've got your own peanut or candy machine, you can put a nickel in it any time you
14:05want.
14:06What are you thinking on those?
14:07You got three of them, Mike.
14:08Those are actually mine.
14:10Oh, yeah.
14:10Oh.
14:10Now, you better talk to the boss.
14:13That was her dad's.
14:14As much as Gwen says she hates Mike's collection, it turns out she likes to hold on to stuff from
14:19her family, too.
14:20My dad loved antiques also.
14:22And those peanut machines, for some reason, he loved.
14:26See, there's one.
14:27Yeah, let me see.
14:27Let me see if Mike does.
14:28They're broken.
14:29Those aren't the earliest.
14:30They're one-centers or acorns, but...
14:32This one's different.
14:33That's plastic.
14:34I love the two acorn machines with the glass dome, but all three are in great shape and have some
14:39value.
14:52All right.
14:53How about...
14:55Hmm.
14:56Thirty bucks a piece.
14:59How about forty?
15:00About thirty-two dollars a piece.
15:03How about three for a hundred?
15:06What?
15:08Gwen's been on our side all day, but now that we've found something she's attached to, things are different.
15:14Well, we're not that far away.
15:15I'm at ninety-six, right?
15:16So you might as well make it an even number.
15:18Well, it's four bucks.
15:20Yeah, what's four bucks?
15:21He'll get me on something else.
15:22All right.
15:22I hated to part with it, but I've got some other things that belong to him that were more special
15:27to him than those.
15:29Oh, Lord.
15:30Look at this.
15:31Champagne and beers.
15:32What do you got?
15:33Royal Crown?
15:34Oh, here we go.
15:36Woo!
15:37I have never seen fans like this before.
15:39They've got a great art deco look and a very unique design.
15:42My aunt and uncle had an office supply company, and they used those in their showroom.
15:45I know they're old.
15:46It's been fifty years.
15:48My daughter wants them for her home.
15:50Since Gwen has two of these fans, I'm hoping she'll part with one of them.
15:53Obviously, this was a very industrial fan.
15:55It had three speeds on it.
15:56It's built well.
15:57I mean, it was for definitely circulating some air back in the day, you know.
16:14I don't know if you're going to plug one in.
16:16No.
16:17I don't want to blow the lights.
16:18They probably would work.
16:20You can try it if you're brave.
16:22You're always taking a risk when you plug in vintage electronics.
16:25We've done it before.
16:34It blew up on me.
16:35Okay, I've got to back up.
16:37Yeah, back up.
16:38Ready?
16:40Let's hope we don't blow the whole electric circuit here at Mike and Gwen's property.
16:45It's working.
16:46It's going hot.
16:48My whole life's done.
16:49Now we've got to take a shower.
16:50Feel it?
16:51I can feel it.
16:52This is a huge plus.
16:53The fan works, and it has tons of power.
16:55That's what I'm looking for in an industrial fan.
16:57I just hope that Gwen will let it go.
16:59I couldn't sell both of them because I promised my daughter.
17:02He'd sell one?
17:03Yeah.
17:04I'd like to get $1,000 for it because it is so unique.
17:07When she says $1,000, I'm hearing the I don't want to sell it price.
17:11I've got to do better.
17:13What's your best on one of these?
17:15I can't go any lower than $7,000.
17:18$7,000, yeah.
17:20I'm just thinking about $4,50 on one.
17:23No, that's not that far apart.
17:25It's a little ways, but I mean $4.75.
17:30You didn't hear me say $6, I don't think.
17:32I did.
17:33I'll tell you what I can do.
17:34I'll do $500 on this one that you're holding on to.
17:38You're going to make a girl cry.
17:39She's got a white knuckle on it there, too.
17:41I see that.
17:41Yes.
17:42That sounds pretty good.
17:43Wow, there's a little role reversal going here.
17:46Out of nowhere, Mike has taken a page from Gwen's playbook,
17:49and now Gwen's the one holding on tight.
17:51This is great.
17:52Oh, all of a sudden, he's willing to sell.
17:54$500 sounds good, Mike?
17:57Sounds good to me.
18:00Gwen?
18:01What happened with this?
18:03A shake's a shake.
18:04Once bitten, twice shy.
18:05You're in trouble.
18:06You know, one thing that was great about this pick
18:08was it was a team couple pick.
18:10Come on, Gwen.
18:11There we go.
18:11Is it long?
18:14It'll fit.
18:15I bought the art duckle fan for $500.
18:17I'm going to send it to Danielle to get it appraised.
18:20I bought the two cast iron cotton gin plates for $50.
18:23I'm going to ask $100 apiece.
18:26Hey, hey, we didn't charge you extra for these gumballs.
18:29I bought the three peanut machines for $96.
18:31I'm going to ask $85 apiece.
18:34Feliz Navidad.
18:35We enjoyed it.
18:36Feliz Navidad.
18:38I'd say this pick was a knockout.
18:41Mike and Frank were good about everything.
18:44Because I think they understood the sentimental value of it, too.
18:47I'm going to cry losing some of this stuff.
18:49That might sound a little bit soft and girly to you.
18:53But if you don't like what I say, go get in the boxing ring with me.
18:57See ya.
18:58Bye.
19:00Merry Christmas.
19:05Tommy, can we look around a little bit?
19:07Hey, y'all.
19:08Come on in.
19:08This is just the kind of place I love to be.
19:10It's just piles of stuff.
19:12So Frank and I are digging around in this room.
19:13We turn around.
19:14All of a sudden, there's a huge guy there.
19:16Hey, what's going on?
19:21Here's what I'm thinking for retirement.
19:23I've been reading about the Panama Canal.
19:25They're widening it.
19:27We can buy land.
19:28And then we plant a lot of exotic trees.
19:31And then in 20, 25 years, when they're full growth, then you can cash in.
19:36I like the trees part.
19:37I think we should invest in saparillos.
19:40What's a saparillo?
19:41Saparillo, they're big, long trees.
19:42And people like to use the oil.
19:45We can have kudzu converted into an alternative.
19:48We have fuel source.
19:50I like alternative fuel.
19:51That's where the world's going now.
19:52Because we could hire your hairdresser's cousin's kid.
19:54Remember you said he just graduated with a chemical engineer degree?
19:57Yeah, but he makes the stuff that I don't think is legal.
19:59None.
20:06We're down south freestyling.
20:08That means a lot of open road and a lot of hidden junk.
20:12Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up.
20:14Look at that Volkswagen.
20:15Check it out.
20:16Go back a little bit.
20:17I missed a Volkswagen.
20:18Yeah, you're going to thank me on this one.
20:20There it is, baby.
20:20That's a transporter.
20:22What year?
20:2370, 70, 71 looks like.
20:25When Frank sees the VW, he's got my attention.
20:28We drive all over the back roads of America, and this is the kind of stuff I'm hoping to
20:32see.
20:33All right, let me handle this.
20:34Hey, don't handle it.
20:35Give me the thing.
20:35Give me the flyer.
20:36Now, calm down, because you're going to show your car.
20:38Let me handle it.
20:39The reason I love Volkswagen is because when I was a young guy, it's the only vintage car
20:43that I could afford to buy.
20:45They're classic vehicles.
20:46Dude, do you realize how rare those trucks are?
20:48Yeah, well, don't let him love that.
20:50What?
20:51Calm down.
20:53Hey, how are you doing?
20:55Pretty good.
20:55How are you doing?
20:56Hey, I'm Mike.
20:57Nice to meet you.
20:57I'm Charlie.
20:58We saw your Volkswagen.
20:59Oh, did you?
21:00Yeah, man.
21:00That truck?
21:01Yeah.
21:01What is that, 70s?
21:02It's a 71.
21:03That's nice.
21:04This is some of the list of some of the kind of stuff we buy.
21:07Okay.
21:07See at the top of the list?
21:09Volkswagen.
21:10Volkswagen.
21:10Yeah, man.
21:11Has anybody ever asked you if you'd sell that?
21:13Yeah, people try to buy that thing all the time.
21:14Really?
21:15Yeah.
21:15Has it been a number issue, or you just don't want to sell it?
21:17You're in love with it?
21:18Well, I just had a long time.
21:19My son drove it for a long time, but part of the family.
21:21Yeah.
21:22I've got a whole lot more Volkswagens down here behind the fence.
21:24You do?
21:25This stop is looking up.
21:26I'm always jacked up to look at vintage Volkswagens.
21:29Can we take a look at them?
21:30Yeah, if you want to look.
21:31Okay.
21:31Let's get out.
21:32Well, my VW collection started back when, basically, I was four years old.
21:36My parents bought a Volkswagen bus.
21:38I learned to drive in the same car, and while I was going to college, they sold it.
21:42When I came home, I was very upset.
21:43Volkswagens, people either love them or they hate them.
21:46There's no in-between ground.
21:47You either fall in love with them right away, or it's just another car.
21:50This is it?
21:51Yep.
21:52This is the junkyard.
21:54No way.
21:55Wow, you got all kinds of stuff here.
21:57Man.
21:58Mike's in heaven here.
22:00Charlie, you're holding out on us, man.
22:03Volkswagen heaven.
22:04I've been picking since I was a little kid.
22:06I used to hang out in junkyards, but I've never been in a junkyard with so many Volkswagen buses.
22:12This is where they all come to stay.
22:14This is the VW graveyard?
22:16Well, not really graveyard.
22:17More like the rescue center.
22:18I started saving the Volkswagens because the junkyards were crushing them so fast that they were disappearing.
22:24And I knew if I didn't save them and collect them, that they would be gone.
22:28So what are your plans for them?
22:30I mean, do you have people coming out here and they're just buying parts off you?
22:32Well, I've sold a few parts.
22:34Mainly, I'm trying to wait until I retire and then fix them up and sell them one at a time.
22:38I like taking everything back.
22:38How many years until you retire?
22:39Three years.
22:40Three years?
22:41No kidding.
22:41And then you're going to hit it hard?
22:42Yeah.
22:43The Volkswagen bus is just probably the ugliest thing that was put on four wheels.
22:47But it just, I don't know, it kind of grows on you.
22:50I mean, I just like the looks of them.
22:52I love the classic look of the old 60s Volkswagens.
22:55This is like my man cave.
22:56This is a big man cave.
22:57Now you need a couple big old German brews and some Fra lines.
23:01Since I couldn't buy the VW transporter out front, I'm hoping on the back of the property, there's another rare
23:07Volkswagen.
23:08All right.
23:08How many did you say you got back here?
23:10Oh, there's about 50, 55.
23:12Well, in Iowa, we have corn mazes.
23:14South Carolina, you guys got Volkswagen mazes.
23:16So now we walked all the way back and there it was.
23:20Ew.
23:22A 23 window, 1958 van.
23:26I can imagine this thing going down the road, ceiling wax red, chestnut brown, totally done, deluxe model, cruising out.
23:36It's a 58 model, 23 window, deluxe.
23:38See, it's even got the trim over on the VX.
23:40Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:41Charlie's like a junkyard dog and he's buried this Volkswagen bone back here where nobody can see it.
23:58This is number one on my list when I retire.
24:00Is it buried the deepest because you thought, you know what, I never want to be tempted to sell it?
24:04Well, I hid it.
24:05You hid it from yourself, even?
24:07I can appreciate your passion, man.
24:09I'm like you.
24:09I can see past the rust and I can see what it can be.
24:12The 23 window was officially known as the sunroof deluxe.
24:16It came out in 1958 as the top of the line Volkswagen bus.
24:20How long has it been sitting back here?
24:22I've had it probably 10, 12 years back here.
24:24This model had eight additional skylight windows that made this bus much more special than any other bus they put
24:31out before.
24:32What do you estimate something like this is worth?
24:34Well, if you get one that's completely restored, I saw one at auction just went not too long ago for
24:37$70,000 restored.
24:40This 23 window bus is basically the beginnings of a major restoration project.
24:45Man, you just don't see these things anymore.
24:47No, these are really, really hard to find.
24:51Charlie, have you ever had an offer on this van?
24:54No.
24:55I always have clients that are looking for restoration projects, and they would pay big money for a van like
24:59this, even in this condition.
25:01Well, you've been around the block a few times.
25:03Obviously, not in this thing.
25:05Yeah.
25:05You know, and I'd pay $4,000 the way it sits.
25:09Wow.
25:10When Mike offered $4,000, I was shocked.
25:12I really didn't think, you know, somebody would pay that much for it.
25:15Man, that's a pretty good offer.
25:18I'd like to keep it, you know, to do it myself.
25:21Like, I enjoy working on them.
25:22Charlie loves Volkswagen's as much as I do.
25:24I'm going to have to step up to the plate and sweeten this pot.
25:27I'll step up a little bit on it.
25:305K.
25:33That's hard to turn down.
25:36Then don't.
25:40That's a fair price, but like I said, I really don't want to sell this one.
25:44It's real hard to find the 23s with all the deluxe trim on them.
25:46That's why this one's so hard to find.
25:48Especially an early one like this.
25:49It came pretty apparent that Charlie really loves his collection.
25:52He's a buyer and not a seller.
25:53God, I wish you never would have shown me this thing.
25:56Dang.
25:57Don't tell my wife about the money.
25:59She'll sell it.
25:59All right.
26:00Yeah, where's she at?
26:00Let's go find her.
26:01It was really hard to turn down $5,000.
26:04That's a lot of shifts at the fire department.
26:06In the end, I just had to pass because I just really wanted to keep that car.
26:09Do you know anybody else that might have any, like, you know, some older stuff?
26:13I mean, like stuff that was on that list that we gave you.
26:15Yeah.
26:15Yeah, my neighbor Tommy's got a building right down the road.
26:18Uh-huh.
26:18And, man, that thing's full of stuff.
26:20Pick it.
26:21One-on-one.
26:21If you can't buy something here, maybe you can buy something close.
26:24Go down here to the end of the road.
26:26Yeah.
26:26And it's got a big barbed wire fence with no trespasses signs.
26:29Right on a big brick building.
26:30That'll bother us.
26:31All right.
26:31So just tell him Charlie sent us.
26:33Yeah, that'll work.
26:33All right.
26:34When I found out that Mike was a collector, if you're talking to somebody else that really
26:37loves Volkswagens like he does, it just really makes, you make the connection.
26:41It's pretty cool.
26:42See you later.
26:44As far as freestyling goes, this was a bust.
26:46But we did get a lead, and I can't wait to see what Tommy's got.
26:54So Frank bought a fan from a couple named Mike and Gwen.
26:57He's shipped it back home so that I can have it appraised.
27:00Hey, Tom.
27:01Nice to meet you.
27:02I'm Tom Frampton, CEO of Fanimation.
27:05I'm also the curator for the Antique Fan Collector Association Museum in Indianapolis.
27:10Okay, Tom.
27:11This is it.
27:12This is the fan.
27:14Tell me a little bit about it, because in my mind, I'm envisioning it in some bordello
27:18somewhere or some nightclub or something.
27:20Well, definitely that was probably the setting.
27:22This fan was made sometime after 1927, the tail end of the Art Deco period.
27:27This thing was built by the Safety Car Heated and Lighting Company.
27:31It was a German company that came over to the U.S. in the late 1800s.
27:35They primarily built fans and lighting for trains.
27:52It was produced just prior to the Great Depression.
27:55Of course, the stock market crashed in 29, so very few of these were ever produced.
28:01What makes it a rare piece?
28:02I do own several ceiling mount versions of this.
28:05This is the first pedestal one I come across.
28:08Pedestal fans in general are not that common.
28:11They're inherently difficult to locate.
28:13You have to have power in the floor.
28:14And if you ever want to change your furniture, it's very difficult to move the fan.
28:18So once it's mounted, it's hardwired into the floor.
28:22Bolt to the floor.
28:23I really picture it in a train station, because in a train station, you've got enormously tall ceilings.
28:28You can't drop a down rod to the fan that distance.
28:32The motor turns both the blades and the air spreader, so as the blades rotate, the screen rotates and throws
28:40the air around the room.
28:41This particular one, the belt is missing.
28:43It turns it.
28:44This fan was a bit of a failure, technically, but sometimes those technical failures turn out to be the greatest
28:52finds.
28:53So in this condition as is, if we were to put this out on the floor tomorrow, what can we
28:58expect to get out of her?
28:59It's a pretty rare piece, in a retail setting, in this condition.
29:03Okay, just be nice, because Frankie really, really gives me a hard time.
29:10I'd say...
29:11Here's the email from Danielle.
29:14Uh, what?
29:16Mmm!
29:17Remember the fan?
29:17Yeah?
29:18She got the fan appraised.
29:19Give me that number!
29:20Ooh.
29:23We just came from a freestyle.
29:25We weren't able to score on anything, but Charlie, he was nice enough to give us a lead.
29:29This must be the place right here.
29:31Frank and I cruise down the road, and all of a sudden we see it.
29:34This is it right here.
29:35It says no trespassing.
29:36Yeah, he's got the barbed wire.
29:38Barbed wire, tall fences, no trespassing signs, the Fort Knox of junk.
29:45Remember, Charlie sent us.
29:49You never know what kind of reaction you're going to get when you walk up to someone's door with barbed
29:55wire and no trespassing signs.
29:59But we had the key word, the magic word.
30:03Hey, you Tommy?
30:04Yeah.
30:04The password.
30:05Charlie sent us down here.
30:07All right.
30:07Your neighbor Charlie?
30:08Yeah.
30:08Yeah, he sent us down and said you might have some stuff for sale.
30:11Here's a charming old man.
30:12I mean, he doesn't look grouchy to me.
30:14This is kind of a list of some of the stuff, Tommy, that we buy.
30:17Okay.
30:17I mean, you can see there's kind of a big...
30:19A to Z.
30:20What did this place used to be?
30:21It used to be a school.
30:22How long have you had it?
30:24I've had it about 50 years.
30:25Yeah?
30:2650 years?
30:26Oh my gosh.
30:28Your neighbor said you've been collecting for a long time.
30:30Yeah, I got most of it at auctions, yard sales, and people give me a lot of stuff too.
30:38Tommy, can we look around a little bit?
30:39Yeah.
30:40All right, I'll come on in.
30:43Oh, you have been collecting for a little bit.
30:46No way.
30:47This is just the kind of place I love to be because there's no rhyme or reason.
30:50It's just piles of stuff.
30:51And the whole room is full of shelves with lots of junk.
30:56So this was your place of business?
30:58Yeah, I had a little feed and seed store here.
31:01Oh, okay.
31:01This was your feed store right here?
31:02Yeah.
31:03When I hear feed and seed, I'm from Iowa.
31:05I love that kind of stuff.
31:06I started selling wood stoves, iron wood stoves, and then the feed and seeds followed that.
31:13That was back when Jimmy Carter was in the president.
31:17Okay, that's been a while.
31:18Yeah.
31:19This is like your domain here, huh?
31:20You put all the glass cases in and everything and just start stacking it.
31:24The great thing about this place is nobody gets in here.
31:26Some of this stuff's been here 20, 30 years.
31:28So everything that you touch could be a treasure.
31:31A lot to look at.
31:32So did you specialize in anything?
31:35Or you just bought whatever you liked?
31:36I just, just whatever I liked most.
31:39I'm afraid I like it all.
31:42I just like to get a hold of stuff and add it to my next collection, you know.
31:48That's funky, Frankie.
31:50Is that plastic?
31:50Yeah, it's plastic.
31:51Made in the 60s.
31:52One thing I spotted was a clown gumball machine.
31:55These gumball machines were made for residential use.
31:57They were just for the inside the house for fun.
31:59What would you have to have for something like this, Tommy?
32:02I'd like $30 for it.
32:04$30 on this?
32:06What do you do?
32:06You move his nose or what do you do?
32:08You move his nose back like that.
32:10Oh, okay, that's cool.
32:11Thanks, it's through here.
32:12I've seen the spaceship ones before, but I've never seen the clown-faced one.
32:15This is a great piece.
32:17Tommy, it's got a little hole on the side here.
32:19Yeah.
32:19The kids will be able to get that gumball out there.
32:22How about $20?
32:23Okay, good.
32:24Is that good?
32:24$20?
32:25All right.
32:26All right, broke the ice.
32:26I'll take the ice.
32:28How come you've decided to sell a few things?
32:32Well, I run out of room.
32:35It looks like it.
32:36I love to dig.
32:37I love when people just pile it up.
32:39Can I look in this case?
32:40Yeah.
32:40Yeah.
32:41Because you know what?
32:42You never know what you're going to find.
32:43Is this a local piece, Tommy?
32:45What is this right here?
32:46Right here.
32:48What is that?
32:49Hey, what's going on?
32:51So Frank and I are digging around in this room.
32:52We turn around.
32:53All of a sudden, there's a huge guy there, and he's like, what can I do for you?
32:57I'm thinking we're going to get shut down right away.
32:59All right.
32:59Hey, we're friends at Charlie's.
33:00Oh, okay.
33:01How y'all doing?
33:01We stopped over at his place, and he was telling us about your dad's place, and we came in.
33:05Turns out, this is Tommy's son, Tom Jr., and this guy is just as friendly as his dad.
33:10We buy and sell stuff.
33:11We're from Iowa.
33:12We're pickers.
33:12I don't know if you've ever heard of that.
33:13I'm Mike.
33:13This is Frank.
33:14How you doing?
33:14Hey, how you doing?
33:15Well, normally, Daddy don't let people come in, and he let Mike and Frank come in, and
33:21then he started selling some stuff, so I was shocked.
33:25All right.
33:25Did you collect stuff, too?
33:26I pick it up and bring it to him.
33:29Okay.
33:29You're finding stuff for him?
33:30Yeah.
33:31If somebody gives it to me, I'll bring it home.
33:33There you go.
33:35That's kind of a team there.
33:36He always told me, if somebody gives you something, don't turn it down.
33:39Just take it and bring it on home.
33:40We'll separate it and see what it is.
33:42So is this whole building full of stuff?
33:44Pretty much.
33:45Yeah.
33:45All right, Frank.
33:46All right.
33:46Got some brown to cover.
33:48No doubt.
33:48Sometimes when you're freestyling, you show up at the right place at the right time.
33:52Today's one of those days.
33:54That looks like me drinking.
33:56Oh, my God.
33:58What's that say?
33:59The Ritter Dental Manufacturing.
34:01I see this really cool, unusual motor.
34:04It's an upright, lots of pulleys, leather belt, some nickel plating.
34:08It's a pump coming out of a dentist's office.
34:11Blow your teeth with.
34:22I bought it at a yard sale.
34:24Oh, you bought it at a yard sale.
34:25Yeah.
34:25It says Ritter.
34:26They made the chairs.
34:27They made all the dental stuff.
34:29This is the motor that probably was down on one of those islands.
34:31I like this.
34:31This has got a cool look to it.
34:32What are you thinking on this?
34:34$30.
34:35$30?
34:36Yeah.
34:36I guess, Frank, it's kind of cool, isn't it?
34:37All right, I'll take it.
34:39Boom.
34:39Hook, line, sinker.
34:41The deal is done.
34:43A hand with glitter on it.
34:45God, I love that.
34:46Hey, Tommy, what about these signs here, this fertilizer?
34:50They're cool because I like them because they're brand new.
34:51I like sign guys, and I like advertising stuff.
34:54There's like 17 of them.
34:55About $200.
34:57Okay.
34:57Okay.
34:58Deal.
34:59Tommy is ready to sell.
35:01I mean, he's in the selling mode, and I think he's having fun.
35:05All right, Tom.
35:07Okay.
35:07You got a Gilbert microscope set.
35:10Okay.
35:10And then you got a Country Western lampshade.
35:13About $20 on the microscope.
35:16$2 on the light.
35:18I'll tell you what.
35:19I love this piece.
35:20I'll kick in an extra three.
35:22Five bucks for the Country Western lampshade.
35:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:24Well, I decided to let somebody else have stuff and enjoy it.
35:28Like I have.
35:30Frank and I are digging around in Tommy's stuff,
35:32and the great thing about picking a room like this is
35:35is you're getting to know the person as you're looking through their things.
35:37I find a really cool Road King belt buckle.
35:41Professional driver, Road King.
35:43Driver's Club member from the Road King Club.
35:47This is like a trucker's bronze star.
35:49Were you the Road King, Tom?
35:51Yeah.
35:51How many miles you got to put in to be a Road King?
35:53About a million miles.
35:54A million miles.
35:55Yeah.
35:56Truck driving?
35:57Yeah.
35:57Wow.
35:57All right, that's broken.
35:59Well, Daddy started out in trucking in 1959,
36:02and then in the 70s, he got into the feed and seed business.
36:06Oh, here is a Road King not broken.
36:08Tom.
36:08How about 10 bucks for the one that's not broken?
36:10Okay, that's good.
36:11All right.
36:12Well, Frank, here's my new nickname, baby.
36:14Road King?
36:14Road King.
36:30I can't spin it.
36:31Don't spin.
36:32It feels locked up.
36:34Schlitz.
36:34I just like the grill on it.
36:36I know I don't like the beer.
36:37Looking around, digging around, digging deep, and I see it.
36:41A really cool piece of southern pottery.
36:43What's this piece of pottery right here?
36:45That's old churn.
36:46Yeah.
36:46Milk churn.
36:47It's got beautiful green glaze on it.
36:49Red clay.
36:50This thing was hand thrown back in the day, probably around the turn of the century.
36:54My mother used to make buttermilk butter in it.
36:57Your mother used this one?
36:59Yeah.
36:59I hope you are.
37:00Had that a long time.
37:01Mm-hmm.
37:02This is an amazing piece, a great story.
37:04I've got to own it.
37:06Can I make you an offer on that one?
37:07No, you can't make me an offer.
37:09Well, from what I can see, and it doesn't sound like it's cracked, how about 100 bucks?
37:19What do you think, Tom?
37:21125.
37:22125 bucks.
37:26All right, 125.
37:28All right.
37:28125.
37:29When this piece of pottery was made, it was very utilitarian, but now it's looked at as art.
37:35It's going to a good home.
37:36I'm going to keep this.
37:37My dad believes in preserving and keeping old stuff because it's not being made anymore.
37:44And the way scrap prices are, people selling it like it's going out of style.
37:47Hey, guys.
37:48I want to tell you, I really appreciate y'all coming.
37:50Daddy had a stroke in November, but he's doing real good, and he enjoys doing his collection.
37:56And y'all really had made his day coming.
37:59Oh, well, heck.
38:00You know what?
38:00He made our day letting us look around.
38:02All of a sudden, there was more of a purpose there than we even knew about.
38:06Tommy has had a hard time, and if we can lighten his load in any way and trying to get
38:10rid of some of his stuff, I'm happy to do that.
38:13Frank, check out the Coke machine.
38:15That's cool.
38:15An upright Coke machine.
38:17You always see the coolers.
38:18You never see the uprights.
38:19This is an early Coke machine, early 50s.
38:22I'd do 300 bucks on this one in the condition that it's in.
38:29Is this whole building full?
38:31The bottom part is.
38:32The whole bottom part of it is.
38:34So now we've established a relationship with Tommy.
38:37He takes us into the next building.
38:39The windows on the building are all bricked up.
38:42This guy must have gold bars of junk.
38:44Yeah, man.
38:45This is the gift that keeps on giving.
38:47This was an old schoolhouse, and my dad got it, bought it in 1957 from his dad.
38:53Oh, this was his dad's before him?
38:55Right.
38:55Wow.
38:56There's so much stuff piled up in there, my mind is trying to catch up with my eyes.
39:02He's got a little bit of everything.
39:03Tommy, how much for the picture?
39:05The biggest treasure for me is an ad from a 1988 Chevrolet Nova.
39:10I mean, they don't even make these cars anymore.
39:12I know a guy that's got a car like this.
39:14Yeah, you.
39:15I got one just like that, same color.
39:18Nova's came out in 1962, and they were always kind of an economy car.
39:21Then in the late 60s, early 70s, they became one of the top muscle cars.
39:26That's a nice looking car, $20.
39:29Oh my God, my car didn't cost that much.
39:32It's cardboard, $10.
39:35$15.
39:37$15?
39:38No, there's not even a...
39:40You can get you two for $15.
39:43I don't want two, but I'll do $10.
39:44Okay.
39:45Yeah, I like the bargain.
39:47It's a lot of fun to wish-wash back and forward.
39:51$10?
39:52You got it.
39:52All right.
39:54I didn't pay almost that much for the car.
39:56Now I have a factory ad for my 1988 Chevrolet Nova.
40:00It's the same color.
40:01It's baby blue.
40:02It's a four-door.
40:03It's the prize of the day.
40:04Frank, check out the Coke machine.
40:05Ooh, that's cool.
40:08An upright Coke machine.
40:09You always see the coolers.
40:10You never see the uprights.
40:12This is an early Coke machine, early 50s.
40:14This Coke machine was made by a company called Cavalier.
40:17It's a Model 51.
40:18I still got a Coke bottle in there.
40:20When's the last time this Coke machine was fired up?
40:22That Coke machine came out of the feed and seed store.
40:24When I was a kid, it was always out there.
40:26I remember getting the co-colas out of it when I was a little kid.
40:29So was the feed and seed store one of those places that was kind of a social gathering,
40:33social hangout every day?
40:35Yeah, they'd come in, drink a Coca-Cola, sit around, me and shoot a breeze and stuff
40:39like that.
40:40Tell some lies.
40:40Yeah.
40:41So when you were a little kid, that's where you grew up inside?
40:43I got an education over here.
40:44Yeah.
40:47A lot of ways.
40:48Did he get an advanced education?
40:50Yeah.
40:50We had a good time.
40:51We worked hard, but we played hard, too.
40:54Can I make you an offer on the Coke machine?
40:55Yeah.
40:56Conditions everything on these, and then there's certain models that are more desirable than others.
41:00This is a Cavalier, and then there's another company named Vendo that also made them.
41:04There were two large companies that were making Coke machines back in the day.
41:08One was Cavalier, the other was Vendo.
41:11Vendo had a model called the 39.
41:13It would distribute 39 bottles.
41:16In 1953, Cavalier made an upright that smoked the Model 39, and it was the Model 51.
41:2351 bottles of pop, not 39.
41:26And what that means to the vendor is more profits.
41:29I'd do 300 bucks on this one in the condition that it's in.
41:32How about $3.25?
41:35$3.25.
41:36$3.25?
41:38Yeah.
41:41All right.
41:42Done deal.
41:43Shake.
41:44I'm a proud owner of a piece of history from the Turner Feed and Seed Store.
41:50I got the dental motor for $30.
41:53I'm going to ask $95.
41:55I got the Coke machine for $325.
41:58I'm going to ask $750.
42:00I got the fertilizer signs for $200.
42:02I think I can get at least $25 a piece.
42:05There you got it.
42:06Gotcha.
42:07Today started out as a bus with Charlie, but we did really great with Tommy, and I think
42:11he had a good time, too.
42:12Sweet picking, my friend.
42:13Thanks for hopping down.
42:14It was a pleasure.
42:14It was an honor.
42:15I thought we'd done pretty good.
42:16He had a good time.
42:18He enjoyed himself, and I did, too.
42:20Thank you so much.
42:21Take care.
42:21We'll see y'all.
42:21See you down the road.
42:22All right.
42:23You're welcome to come back anytime.
42:25All right.
42:25Thank you, Tommy.
42:26All right.
42:27With the money I got today, I probably buy some more cruises.
42:30Hey, buddy.
42:31We'll see y'all.
42:33Take care, Road King.
42:40God dang it.
42:41I got so many emails.
42:42Here's an email from Danielle.
42:45Uh.
42:46What?
42:47Mmm.
42:48I hate when you say that, because it's always never what I think it is.
42:51Remember the fan?
42:52Yeah.
42:52She got the fan appraised.
42:53Give me the number.
42:54What do you think it is?
42:56What's your expert opinion?
42:57You've been picking for 25 years.
42:59I'd say it's worth a thousand.
43:01What did you pay?
43:02Five hundred.
43:03You did?
43:03No, it's more than that.
43:05Oh, it's more than that?
43:08Eighteen to two thousand.
43:09It's more than that.
43:10It's twenty-seven hundred.
43:12All right.
43:13I made money.
43:13You thought out of the box.
43:14That was a good one.
43:15That was a cool piece, though.
43:16I mean, you just don't see those.
43:17It was a cool piece.
43:17And I was surprised that she was going to sell to me, you know?
43:20Twenty-seven hundred.
43:21It's a good day to be Frank Fritz.
43:23Today is like Christmas.
43:24I bought the Art Junkle fan for five hundred dollars.
43:27I scored.
43:29Now that you're doing good on the fan, it's time to start thinking about retirement.
43:32Here's what I think we should do.
43:33What about a motorcycle shop?
43:36Me and you, man.
43:37I would really like to be like a fishing guide because you know what a good fisherman I am.
43:40What am I going to do and put the worm on the guy's hook?
43:43You could clean him.
43:45I'm not going to clean fish all day.
43:47What about some kind of like a dog rescue place?
43:50What about a cat rescue place?
43:52Nah, the dogs and the cats wouldn't get along.
43:54You could have to have like two separate buildings.
43:56It's almost like us.
43:58I wouldn't go that far.
