00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02What is that?
00:03It's a Harley Davidson golf cart.
00:05It's a Harley?
00:06Wow.
00:06She run?
00:07Nope.
00:08This should be mounted, but it's bouncing around.
00:10It's a...
00:12Holy crap.
00:13Wow, that is pretty wild looking.
00:15I've never seen one of these, ever.
00:16It's a horse carriage cart.
00:18Well, if you think you're better, and he thinks he's better,
00:21you guys should just make a little bet.
00:22I like that.
00:23Ron is always trying to show off when it comes to sports,
00:26but there's no way he's beating me in a round of golf.
00:30Oh, holy crotch.
00:33Look at a man's workbench.
00:36You see his passions.
00:39His works in progress.
00:42The things that drive him crazy.
00:47Projects that?
00:48You get the point.
00:50Anyway, every workbench tells a story,
00:53and this is ours.
00:55American Restoration.
01:04Check that out.
01:06I love when stuff comes into the shop,
01:08and it's not exactly what it appears to be at first sight.
01:11It's those little surprises that make my job so interesting every single day.
01:15What is that?
01:16It's a 1973 Harley Davidson golf cart.
01:19Can we take it off?
01:20Yeah.
01:20Want to check it out?
01:21Yeah.
01:21I actually got the golf cart through a series of trades I did online.
01:25It's in pretty rough shape, but I know it's got a lot of potential.
01:29Wow.
01:30I have never seen a Harley Davidson golf cart.
01:32I know that they were the very first ones to make gas-powered golf carts.
01:35Oh, okay.
01:36In the early 60s, here you are, you got these gas-motored motorcycles.
01:39Well, they started putting gas motors in golf carts,
01:41and they had three wheels instead of four wheels.
01:43Well, in the 70s, they started coming up with these four-wheel carts.
01:47In 82, they stopped making golf carts.
01:49So this is pretty cool.
01:50You don't even have anything from that era.
01:52Is this battery or gas?
01:53Yeah, this is battery.
01:56Wow, that's cool.
01:58This motor right here, the electric motor is actually what drives the whole machine.
02:01Weight distribution is huge.
02:04I mean, these batteries are heavy.
02:05If they set them in a configuration that it's weight-perfect for the car.
02:09Did she run?
02:10Nope.
02:11All these batteries are in series.
02:13It could be one little wire-off, and that's it.
02:15It wouldn't work, you know?
02:16See how this is bobbling around in here?
02:18Yeah.
02:18This should be mounted, but it's bouncing around.
02:21It's a...
02:23Batteries are still good.
02:25I see that.
02:27This golf cart almost took me for a ride.
02:29But the good news is, she's still got power.
02:31So you have any kind of an idea what you want to do?
02:34My plan is to get it restored and then put it up for auction
02:37so that 100% of the proceeds go to the Humane Society of the United States
02:41to fight future cases of animal cruelty.
02:43Oh, that's awesome.
02:45That's a great cost.
02:46I love it.
02:47I want to see this thing to where it comes up to the auction
02:49and there's money flying out of pockets for this cost.
02:52I want to be surprised.
02:54We want to make it really cool.
02:55Yeah.
02:55I've got my work cut out for me.
02:57I can see that, though.
02:58The deal is, is this is all fiberglass, okay?
03:01So when you fix bodywork like this,
03:03you've got to take and sand it all down, go below it,
03:05put resin on there and put cloth on there and strengthen it.
03:08So that's a little bit of a problem there.
03:09And then you used to have some kind of a top on it.
03:12Yeah, I had a top.
03:12Okay.
03:13We want to put it in auction.
03:14Somebody's going to go, I got to have that.
03:16Yeah.
03:16It's cute.
03:17We need to make it look bad.
03:18Yeah.
03:18To get all that done, I'm looking at about 10,000.
03:23Okay.
03:24Well, you know what?
03:25It's for a great cause.
03:26I trust you.
03:27Let's do it.
03:28All right.
03:28Cool.
03:29All right.
03:29Let's go in the office.
03:30We'll take care of some paperwork.
03:31I'm extremely excited about seeing what Rick's going to be able to do with this golf cart.
03:35I just hope that Rick can work his magic so that I can raise as much money as possible
03:40for the Humane Society of the United States.
03:50Tyler.
03:50Yeah.
03:50I need you to get somebody to tear down the new Harley Davidson golf cart we just got
03:55in.
03:55Yeah.
03:55Okay.
03:55I can have Kyle and Roy get on that.
03:57You remember when I was driving around a golf cart, playing golf many, many years ago?
04:01Yeah.
04:01And I was pretty good at it.
04:03Yeah.
04:03You were mediocre at best.
04:05I was pretty good.
04:06And I used to leave you in the dust.
04:08Ron's always running his mouth about how he's the best at sports in the family.
04:13But the older he gets, the more level the playing field becomes.
04:16Look at you.
04:17You're out of shape.
04:17You guys should just make a little bet.
04:19Go to the golf course and have it out.
04:21I like that.
04:22Okay.
04:22I don't have a lot of time.
04:24You know, I'll play one hole.
04:25I only got time for one hole.
04:27Okay.
04:28One shot deal.
04:29What's the wager?
04:29I think that you're always wearing that.
04:32And you know he's always wearing this.
04:33I've never seen him in anything else.
04:35So whoever loses has to get dressed in that ridiculous old-time golf attire for a whole
04:40day.
04:41I mean, hats, the socks, and those ridiculous shirts.
04:45All the knickers.
04:46Full-on golf.
04:48I'm in.
04:49I'm in.
04:49I'm still going to beat you.
04:50I'm in.
04:51I'm in, too, because I'm going to have to wear it.
04:53No big deal.
04:54He's totally not going to wear it.
04:55Not a chance in hell.
05:02Hey, Roy.
05:03Rick.
05:03What's going on?
05:04How's this thing doing?
05:05Good.
05:05Just finishing up the lock.
05:07Looks good.
05:07Looks good.
05:08Yeah, I think she's all ready.
05:09I had Roy take the lead on fixing up this old Northwestern peanut vendor for a customer.
05:14And now I just want to check it out before we ship it off.
05:17You know, these are so cool because they hold a variety of things.
05:20I mean, Northwesterns would hold peanuts.
05:22They could hold gum.
05:23They could hold prizes.
05:24I remember coming up to these things.
05:26And putting a penny in and getting a ring or something.
05:28Really cool.
05:29So the customer wanted this thing originally.
05:30They just dented and beat up, like, you know, over the years.
05:33Well, the glass was there, so we cleaned all the glass up.
05:35Sometimes they get all stained, so that looks great.
05:39What I like is, you know, this polished out.
05:40You can see that the one scent was actually inlaid in the brass back underneath there, so it looks really
05:45cool.
05:45Very nice.
05:46And then the other thing was this button was painted white.
05:48So we polished it out and ended up to red, which is what it should have been.
05:52It looks really good inside.
05:54This is the coin mech.
05:56This was actually a rejecter that could be replaced.
05:58This is set up for a penny.
05:59You should have seen what was inside.
06:01It was pretty gnarly.
06:02Yeah.
06:02You ready to try it?
06:03Yeah.
06:04Put the penny right in there, and then the nuts are going to come right out of there.
06:07You ready?
06:07Come on.
06:09Gotcha.
06:09I say it works.
06:12Excellent.
06:13All right.
06:14Good job, Roy.
06:14We'll get it ready, and we'll send it out.
06:16Let's do it.
06:22Hey, bud.
06:23How's it going?
06:23Good.
06:24Looks good.
06:25That looks really good.
06:25That's going to be nice.
06:28Hey.
06:29How are you?
06:29I'm Eric.
06:30Hey, Eric.
06:30I'm Rick.
06:31How you doing?
06:31Nice to meet you.
06:32What's going on?
06:32You got something in there?
06:34Yeah, I got a horse carriage cart.
06:39Holy crap.
06:40It's an old one.
06:41Wow, that is pretty wild looking.
06:43I came here today to drop off a horse pedal cart that I wanted to get restored, and it's
06:46in pretty bad shape.
06:47I've never seen one of these.
06:49Ever.
06:49I found it at a flea market about 10 years ago.
06:51Really?
06:52And when I brought it home, my mom saw it, and she says, that's just like the one I had
06:56when I was little.
06:56Oh.
06:59It's definitely a pedal cart.
07:00And actually, when you pedaled it, I think the horse gallops.
07:03That's pretty cool.
07:04Man, for as beat up as this thing is, I'm kind of digging it.
07:07I think I've heard of the brand name Triang before, but I'm definitely going to have to
07:10do some homework if I end up taking on this job.
07:13If we do this, what are you going to do with it?
07:15I just like to make it a family heirloom to sit in front of the fireplace, and when my
07:18grandkids come along, we have something to put them on and take pictures with.
07:22Awesome.
07:22Awesome.
07:23All right, well, you can tell this thing's been ridden a lot, and it's been repaired.
07:26These little gobs of stuff on here are actually liquid metal.
07:29That's actually what's holding it together at the moment, but we'll go ahead and grind
07:32all that out.
07:33What I found out of my research is there's a mane that's missing, and it looks like it's
07:37the hair flowing.
07:38And it was metal, and it's missing the tail and the reins.
07:41Oh, okay.
07:42Well, we'll have to figure out what that was, and we'll have to make it, and then we'll have
07:46to paint it.
07:46You know, and I don't even know what color it was, but I'll research and find out.
07:50Okay, cool.
07:50So what are you thinking that's going to put me back?
07:53I'm looking at probably $3,200 for the whole thing.
07:56Wow.
07:57All right.
07:58It's got to be done.
07:59It's a family heirloom now.
08:01Awesome.
08:02Thank you very much.
08:02It's very important for me to restore this because it was in my mom's past, and I want
08:06to make it into my family's future.
08:08And I'm real excited to see what Rick can do with this thing.
08:12Have you ever been on a golf course?
08:14Not once.
08:15All right.
08:15Well, it's your lucky day.
08:16Why?
08:16Teach about golf.
08:17Teach about life.
08:18Watch this.
08:21Shank.
08:22Into the net.
08:23This isn't looking good for you.
08:24All right.
08:25You ready?
08:25I'm ready.
08:26All right.
08:26Here we go.
08:27One, two, three.
08:30Oh, my God.
08:42We just started working on a Harley-Davidson golf cart that a customer brought in.
08:46He actually wants to auction it off in support of the Humane Society of the United States.
08:51So we really got to make sure that this thing will sell for a lot of money.
08:56Meanwhile, I got Johnny, our toy expert, coming by to check out the horse pedal car that we're
09:00restoring and hopefully fill in some of the blanks that I have about this piece.
09:04Oh, this is a neat piece, man.
09:05Yeah.
09:05You know, this customer brought it in, and he wants to restore it, but there's a bunch
09:09of stuff that I need to know about it.
09:10But I don't know what colors.
09:11I don't know what was complete.
09:12So I figured you'd give me a little history lesson.
09:15Okay.
09:15It's all England, right?
09:16Exactly.
09:16It's called, the name for it, it's the Trotting Machine.
09:19This is a Triang toy company that made this, which was formerly known as Lions Brothers.
09:23Lions started off with wooden toys back in the 1850s.
09:26Oh, really?
09:27I mean, at that time, people were riding around with horses and stage coaches and stuff like
09:31that, you know?
09:31So it was really, really popular up until, like, the 20s and 30s.
09:36It started falling off.
09:37The car pedal cars were kind of taking over popularity-wise.
09:40But this is definitely after World War II, I would say from the 50s.
09:45All right.
09:45You see the welds here.
09:46You see a lot of other indicators.
09:47It says this is probably a later one.
09:49Gotcha.
09:49He thought it had a main.
09:51Did it have a main?
09:51It did.
09:51This is all pressed steel.
09:53Yeah.
09:53Same thing with the tail.
09:55Now, you see how thick it was.
09:56So it's not one single piece of metal.
09:58It would have been two.
09:59Yeah, it's a pressed steel.
10:00Exactly.
10:01Yeah, it would have been molded.
10:02It would have been a molded main.
10:03And then the colors.
10:05Definitely, they were known for using a lot of brighter colors.
10:07Okay.
10:08The ones that I've seen have been white, red.
10:10But they made a lot of these.
10:11So there would have been a ton of variations as far as the colors go coming out the factory.
10:16So what you pick, you wouldn't be hurting the piece at all.
10:19But you definitely got a project ahead of you, that's for sure.
10:22All right, bud.
10:22Thanks very much.
10:23Anytime, man.
10:24I'll show you up.
10:24I was really glad that Johnny was able to tell me more about this thing.
10:28But if there's one thing I learned, it's that we got a lot of things to do to get this
10:32little horsey trotting again.
10:40While my guy's working on the horse pedal car, I'm meeting with my upholsterer, Charlie.
10:45I've got this Harley-Davidson golf cart, and I want to make this thing badass.
10:48And I'm hoping Charlie can help me come up with an idea for a new top to bring this all
10:52together.
10:53Hey, Charlie.
10:54Hey, Rick.
10:54What's going on?
10:55I got this golf cart in.
10:57Here, I just got a picture of it.
10:58It's a Harley-Davidson AMF.
11:00Yep.
11:00And it needs a top.
11:02Okay.
11:02What do you think?
11:03I have an idea.
11:05I had a golf cart a couple years back.
11:07We made like a T-bucket type top, where it came up in the back and had a freestanding over
11:12the front.
11:12Right.
11:13I can draw you a picture of it.
11:14Kind of an idea.
11:15It'll come out to the top like this.
11:17Okay.
11:18And come down to the back.
11:19But we'll bend the poles.
11:21And then back in your back, we'll have it so it kind of arches.
11:24So the back will be open.
11:25That wouldn't look bad.
11:26Are we going to have just square joints everywhere?
11:28Or are we going to roll any of that?
11:30We can roll the front.
11:31I would like to roll the front.
11:33The back would look cool with that square shape.
11:35See how the back's square?
11:37But the front's got some kind of contour.
11:39Yeah, it'll look really cool.
11:40If we have that round, it won't be so plain.
11:42Right.
11:43Flat look.
11:44Right.
11:44I like it.
11:45Give us some character.
11:46All right.
11:47Thanks, bud.
11:47All right.
11:47Thank you very much.
11:48Okay.
11:49I'll see you later.
11:49All right.
11:50Good luck.
11:51I'm pretty used to Rick just having seats for me to reupholster.
11:54So building the top for this golf cart is going to be a bit of a challenge.
11:57Mainly because of the frame.
11:58Because we're going to have to bend it from scratch ourselves.
12:02Once the frame is set, we'll cut several pieces of canvas, and then we'll clamp them from pole
12:06to pole and fit it until we have the T-bucket effect we're looking for.
12:13I think Rick's really going to like this.
12:14It's going to look good.
12:21Why are you making me carry all this s***?
12:23It's heavy.
12:24That's what caddies do.
12:25Ron and my dad recently made a bet about who's the better golfer, and I came with Ron today
12:30to just make sure he beats my dad.
12:32Dude, have you ever been on a golf course?
12:34Not once.
12:35All right.
12:35Well, it's your lucky day.
12:37Why?
12:37Teach about golf.
12:39Teach about life.
12:40That sounds like a blast.
12:41They kind of intertwine.
12:42Here's the deal with golf, dude.
12:44It's kind of like the way you treat a woman.
12:46If you're going to treat your woman with anger and no respect, watch what's going to happen
12:50to this ball.
12:52Where'd it go?
12:53Right.
12:54Okay.
12:54My life's almost dirt.
12:55She's going to leave.
12:56You don't know where she's going to go, and you're left with nothing but an empty hole,
13:00which that would be your heart.
13:03Now watch this.
13:04Come up.
13:05Nice, gentle, soft, flowing movement.
13:08Oh, yeah, that's gone.
13:09Bye.
13:12Shank, into the net.
13:14You were talking all that to my dad, and now you've got to back it up, and this isn't
13:18looking good for you.
13:19You know what?
13:20You think you can do it better?
13:21Yeah.
13:22All right.
13:23To be honest, I've never played golf before, but it can't really be that hard.
13:27All right, now, make sure you take it.
13:28I don't need your advice.
13:29It's like caveman stuff, dude.
13:31All right.
13:31Go to town.
13:38Man, do I hope that Tyler takes after his dad in the way they play golf.
13:42If that's the case, it's in the bag, baby.
13:45You know caddies by lunch, too, right?
13:54Hey, Rick.
13:55Eric's here for that.
13:56Hey, Eric.
13:58How you been?
13:58Good.
13:59Good to see you.
14:00Oh, I've been waiting for this.
14:01I came here to pick up my horse pedal cart.
14:04When I dropped it off, Rick had never seen one of these before, and I really didn't have
14:07too much information.
14:08I'm really interested to see what he came up with.
14:10All right, you ready?
14:11I'm ready.
14:12All right, here we go.
14:13One, two, three.
14:16Oh, my God.
14:18That's awesome.
14:20Check it out.
14:21That's the same thing?
14:22That is it.
14:23Oh, my God.
14:25It's beautiful.
14:26You even got the white tires, and the rain, and the tail, and everything.
14:31It's beautiful.
14:32When Rick took the sheet off, I was blown away.
14:34It was so beautiful.
14:35I love the color.
14:37Everything you did to it's perfect.
14:39Eric, this thing was a ton of work.
14:40I mean, this particular piece was done in the 50s, and it was called the Trotting Machine.
14:45Trotting?
14:46Yeah.
14:46That's a great name for it.
14:47Yeah.
14:48Very British.
14:49Right.
14:49So, you know, over the years, I've worked on tons of pedal cars.
14:52I mean, all kinds of American stuff, and nothing have I ever done exactly like this, ever.
14:57And so we struggled with it from the body shop.
15:00The horse was so rusted, and this is actually welded together here and welded together here.
15:06And the mechanism's on the inside.
15:07So we had to split the horse.
15:09Each one of the legs were smashed in, so we had to open them up, pound them all, get them
15:13nice and straight again, and then on the main, you know, it had a little slit right through
15:17here.
15:17So what we did is we took two pieces of metal and formed it, and then welded it all back
15:21in here.
15:22And then, of course, on the tail, that's all done exactly like the main.
15:25On the reins himself, I have a friend that does a lot of this kind of work for us.
15:29He handmade that.
15:31You know, this is basically the area to turn it, so it was all, it was stuck, but now it
15:34all turns the wheel.
15:36That is awesome.
15:37Rick did a great job.
15:38I can't wait to get this horse pedal cart back and to surprise my family with it.
15:42And it'll be a family heirloom from now on.
15:46Often you'll hear professionals advise the use of tack welds on metal projects.
15:51Tack welding is basically a temporary weld allowing you to hold your two pieces of metal
15:57together.
15:58But why are tack welds so important?
16:00A, they temporarily hold welds together.
16:04B, they help maintain the alignment of welded pieces.
16:07C, they help prevent warping.
16:09D, all the above.
16:10The answer, coming up next.
16:17Why are tack welds so important?
16:20The correct answer is D, all of the above.
16:23Here I have two pieces of metal that I need to weld in order to make a basic right angle
16:28joint.
16:29I got them secured with C-clamp, so I'm going to make two short welds on each end of the
16:34seam.
16:36Now I'm going to repeat the process on the other side.
16:41Even though the tack welds are the initial part of the process, they have to be sound, because
16:46they're the foundation of the entire joint.
16:54While Ted's busy doing up the Harley-Davidson golf cart with a custom paint job, I'm out
17:13going to have to spend the day wearing ridiculous golf clothes around the shop.
17:17And since I'd love to see my dad dressed up, I've got my money on raw.
17:21Oh, holy crushed.
17:24Not that I need it, but I stopped off and got something just to throw him off his game.
17:27Come on, bro.
17:29Blow us away.
17:32Crushed it!
17:33Whoa!
17:34Where did it go?
17:36Holy smokes!
17:37It disintegrated!
17:39What was that all about?
17:40An exploding ball?
17:42Really?
17:44You two got some serious issues.
17:46I mean, you know?
17:47I didn't put the ball down.
17:48Yeah, well, I know you put him up to it.
17:50This one ain't going to explode, right?
17:52It's a real ball?
17:57That actually wasn't bad, my brother.
17:59You know, Rick might have an off chance that he's good for one day in his life, but probably
18:04not.
18:05Oh, God.
18:06Where'd he go?
18:07Right.
18:07I think it's on the green.
18:09Unbelievable.
18:12Oh.
18:12Well, that was good.
18:13That was good.
18:14I think that's going in.
18:14That's in the hole.
18:15That's frickin' in the hole.
18:17Oh!
18:18At this point, we're tied going onto the green.
18:21So I feel pretty confident.
18:25Oh!
18:26You just lost your advantage.
18:28Now it's Ron's turn.
18:30As long as he sinks his putt, it's my dad in golf shorts.
18:33Hope they got your size knickers.
18:36Oh!
18:38Winner!
18:40Blindside!
18:41Not even looking!
18:43Unbelievable!
18:44I didn't even have to look.
18:45I stared him dead in the eye and sunk the putt.
18:49Winner!
18:49I'm not going to let my brother live this down for a long time.
18:53I've got to get back to work.
18:54I need cocktails.
18:55I just won.
18:56Come on!
18:56Oh!
19:02I saw Rick around here somewhere.
19:04But, uh, you excited?
19:05Oh, my God.
19:06I can't wait.
19:07Rick!
19:08I'm here at Rick's to pick up my 1973 Harley Davidson golf cart.
19:12I wanted to get this restored so I could put it into an auction and have all the proceeds go
19:16to the Humane Society of the United States.
19:18Rick!
19:19I don't know.
19:20You might be all cruising around.
19:21I'll take it for a 10 spin.
19:23Oh, here we go.
19:24Here we go.
19:25Holy cow.
19:27Oh, yeah.
19:28Wow.
19:29That thing is awesome.
19:33Oh!
19:34This thing's insane.
19:35Check it out.
19:36Wow.
19:37That thing's amazing.
19:39I'm out.
19:40Glad you love it.
19:41And, uh, you.
19:43Where's your tire?
19:44A bet's a bet, fool.
19:46Anyways, what do you think?
19:48You like it?
19:48This is crazy.
19:50I'm excited, but I'm honestly getting emotional.
19:52You know what?
19:53My hands are shaking.
19:54Honestly, I'm extremely excited.
19:56When I dropped it off, it was really just a shell of a golf cart.
19:59Rick was able to take what looked early 70s and turn it into something that's just badass Harley.
20:06This screams Harley Davidson.
20:08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:08It didn't have a roof when I dropped it off.
20:10No, no, no, no.
20:11Charlie's my upholster.
20:12You know, we basically had nothing to go off except those four pieces in the back that held it were
20:16there still.
20:17And, uh, I wanted to make it look cool, but I still wanted to make it look like it was
20:21the era, too.
20:22You know, the 1970s.
20:23And there's a lot of work on this.
20:25All the fiberglass, you remember, was stressed and it was cracked.
20:27So we have to end up redoing all the body work on it.
20:30Here, you want to check out of the hood?
20:31Yeah, absolutely.
20:32Here we go.
20:34Wow.
20:35You remember what it looked like back there?
20:36We chromed all the hinges.
20:38Everything's been chromed in there.
20:39All new batteries on it.
20:41All the solenoids and everything have all been gone through.
20:43And it cooks.
20:44It would be a cool ride on the golf course.
20:47Can I drive it?
20:48Oh, yeah.
20:50Take away.
20:51When I sat down and I was able to turn the key and hit the gas pedal.
20:55I mean, it's amazing.
20:56It's soft.
20:56It's smooth.
20:57Woo!
21:00I feel like this is going to go a long way towards rescuing and saving some animals.
21:05Pretty quick, huh?
21:07Oh, that's fun.
21:08That is awesome.
21:10You have no idea how much this is going to help the cause.
21:14I can't thank you enough.
21:15Good.
21:15I can't.
21:16All right, bud.
21:16All right.
21:18You got it.
21:19Let's go in the office and we'll finish up the paperwork and I'll help you load that.
21:23Okay.
21:23Okay.
21:25I can't stop looking at it.
21:32All right, Kyle.
21:32I want to take these pipes and get them down to chrome ASAP.
21:36All right?
21:37What?
21:41Looking stylish, baby.
21:42Oh, my God.
21:43You look great.
21:46You said you were going to go put it on.
21:48I didn't think you were going to.
21:49That's a bet.
21:50It's a little bit wrinkled.
21:51You want to hit that with an iron?
21:52Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
