00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02I need a gift for Cory's birthday.
00:03Let's go out in the boneyard.
00:04When Rick Harrison shows up looking for something,
00:07the stakes are always high.
00:08I just hope I have what he needs.
00:10This is a 1949 Victor.
00:12No, that's not it.
00:13Come on over here.
00:14Maybe I got a nice big screen in there.
00:15It's already got a big TV in the garage.
00:17Um, look at all the cars, dude.
00:20Wow.
00:20Keep in mind you want that late 50s, early 60s spin look.
00:23Oh, look at that.
00:25Hey!
00:26Looks like Verley's back.
00:27Two days, and 1,300 miles later...
00:31Oh!
00:33Look at a man's workbench.
00:36You see his passions.
00:38His works in progress.
00:43The things that drive him crazy.
00:47Projects that...
00:48You get the point.
00:50Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:53And this is ours.
00:55American Restoration.
00:58The End
01:02Rick.
01:03Yeah?
01:04Rick Harrison's here.
01:05Oh, hey.
01:06Hey, what's up, man?
01:07Good to see you, bud.
01:08So what's going on?
01:08What are you bringing in?
01:09Actually, I didn't bring anything in.
01:10I need a gift for Cory's birthday.
01:11He's turning 30.
01:12Like what?
01:13You know, 40s, 50s, 60s, something really cool.
01:16You know, he hangs out in his garage.
01:18I want something for his garage.
01:19Okay, cool.
01:20All right, let's go out the boat here.
01:22Rick Harrison from the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop
01:24is my best customer.
01:25We did a golf cart for his dad, and now he wants something
01:28for his son Cory's 30th birthday.
01:30So I want to make sure it's something that's really badass.
01:34All right, this is a 1949 Victor.
01:36It's all refrigerated, so he's got this huge amount of beer
01:38or soda.
01:39So now you've got this full-blown bar in his garage.
01:42What do you think?
01:43No, that's not it.
01:44When I see it, I'll know what it is.
01:46All right, come on up over here.
01:48I thought about getting him a car, but then I decided I didn't love him that much.
01:53Okay, we used to take gas pumps and put TVs in them, and this one is so big
01:57that maybe I got a nice big screen in there, decorate it all up.
02:00It's already got a big TV in the garage, so.
02:02Oh, okay.
02:03Cory already has a lot of stuff.
02:05It's just hard to find something new for him.
02:08What does he like to do?
02:09He likes to sit on his ass and do nothing, you know?
02:13Come over here.
02:14Let's look at this piece.
02:15Back in the day, we would chop the ends of cars off, and we would make them into a couch.
02:22Okay.
02:22This is an old, like, 1965 back end of a Ford.
02:26Right in here, it's got the whole tuck and roll.
02:28It actually has a back.
02:29You sit in here, it's got maybe a drink holder that comes down like an armrest.
02:33Put all the chrome on it, make the lights work, and then we'll tuck inside some kind of a sound
02:38system.
02:39Yeah, I like the idea, but I want fins everywhere.
02:42Okay.
02:42The whole car couch idea is great, but the one car there, it's sort of blah.
02:47I mean, there's no giant fins on it, there's not a lot of chrome.
02:51The big fins on cars came around 58, 59.
02:53That's when they got really just gigantic and ridiculous.
02:57That's the kind of fins I want on this couch.
02:59I want the corners dangerous.
03:00Right.
03:01Okay.
03:01Okay.
03:02All right.
03:03This sounds good.
03:04I'm glad you like this idea.
03:05So, the only problem I've got right now is finding the car.
03:09All right.
03:09How much do you think it would be?
03:11Um, I'm looking between, I don't know, $9,000 to $11,000.
03:16You know, it's a lot cheaper than a new car.
03:18Sounds like a deal.
03:19A lot.
03:20Thanks.
03:20All right, cool.
03:21You're the best.
03:21I love it when you come up with these ideas.
03:23You know, I love my son to death.
03:25It's his 30th birthday.
03:26But quite frankly, he's not worth car money.
03:28He's worth car couch money.
03:38Looks good.
03:38Looks good.
03:38Almost ready?
03:39Yeah, it looks like it's sealing up pretty good.
03:41So, I think we're good.
03:42A while back, we got a vintage refrigerator that belonged to a customer's father.
03:46I love appliances from the 40s and 50s.
03:49So, I'm really excited to give the restoration a close look before we ship it out.
03:53This is probably a 1949 hot point refrigerator.
03:56This customer wanted it for a memory.
03:58When she sees it every day, when she goes for the milk, she's going to remember her father.
04:02So, that's a big thing.
04:03Originally, this whole machine was all white and dingy and ugly, right?
04:07It looks awesome now.
04:08The customer wanted us to paint it with this blue with a white accent on top.
04:12Ted did a great job on that pen stripe.
04:14I mean, that thing's running through the center.
04:15That looks really good.
04:18All the shelves, these are all aluminum.
04:20It's all been polished out.
04:21They look really good.
04:22It looks like a brand new refrigerator.
04:24Put a brand new compressor in it.
04:25Redid the thermostat.
04:26So, now it's all set up to where it should run really, really good.
04:29All right, Kyle.
04:30Get it wrapped up and we'll deliver it to her.
04:32Okay?
04:32All right.
04:35Now that the hot point's on its way to the customer,
04:37we're going to start working on Corey Harrison's 30th birthday gift.
04:41We need to find a car with awesome fins to make this car couch just right.
04:46Ron's got a lead, so we're going to check it out.
04:49Look at all the cars, dude.
04:51Wow.
04:51When I say I've got a lead, I have a lead.
04:54Morning.
04:55Morning.
04:55I'm Rick.
04:56Rick, I'm Ralph.
04:58Normally, I'd trust Ron and Tyler to do this alone,
05:00but this needs to be done right, so I'm tagging along.
05:03What can I do for you guys?
05:04I'm looking for some cars between the 50s and 60s.
05:07Lots of them right up along the fence in the front.
05:10I've been collecting cars and trucks in my lot for over 35 years,
05:14and right now I have over 300 of them.
05:17Let's go check it out.
05:18This place is just enormous.
05:21There are cars for days.
05:23Tons and tons and tons of cars here.
05:24We can't find something out here.
05:26We're doing something wrong.
05:27Ron.
05:28Look at this.
05:29Check this out.
05:31Oh!
05:34I have to have this.
05:35That's a bed.
05:36That bed's on top.
05:37It's perfect for you.
05:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:39It's like Scooby-Doo.
05:40It's like Scooby-Doo.
05:41You know, we've got to focus.
05:43If I can get up here, I'm buying this thing.
05:45Oh, awesome.
05:46I know we've got a mission, but how am I not going to look at this van?
05:50It's a Ford Econoline from the mid-60s.
05:53This has me written all over it.
05:55Oh, the stars, the moonlight.
05:59This is sexy.
06:00Get down.
06:01We've got to focus on the project.
06:02Why don't we bring him?
06:03Because he's zero fun.
06:05He's such a buzzkill.
06:05You know why you bring me?
06:06I know why you bring me.
06:07For the money.
06:08That's right.
06:09I've never seen one of these car couches done, but the concept just sounds killer.
06:14And I just hope that we can find a car that fits all the specific things needed.
06:18Keep in mind you want that late 50s, early 60s fin look.
06:22Like that?
06:22That?
06:23Look at those fins.
06:24That's like a 56 Premier.
06:27It's a Lincoln.
06:28This is cool.
06:29Dude, this looks like a knight.
06:30It does look like a knight.
06:31That's awesome.
06:33Oh!
06:34Look at that.
06:34He's got a little facial.
06:35Oh, my God.
06:38This has got the fins.
06:39In 55, this futuristic look was, we're going so fast, the car is literally flying off the
06:45back.
06:46So that's how fins came up.
06:47When you're sitting in here, I don't want your legs rolling over this.
06:50And I don't want to cover up all the chrome with the couch coming out to here.
06:55It's got possibilities.
06:56But the back end doesn't really seem like exactly what I have in mind.
07:00Let's keep looking.
07:01Right on.
07:02I love this place.
07:03I'm getting a little concerned.
07:05I mean, there's hundreds of cars we've looked at.
07:06These are Ramblers, Deluxes.
07:08These are nice.
07:09But none of them meets the exact criteria of what we need to build this car couch.
07:14A lot of cars, but...
07:15Oh!
07:16Look at that.
07:17Wow!
07:18Holy crap!
07:19Look at the lines on the back of that.
07:22Are you going to get out?
07:24Oh, I can get out that.
07:26For America!
07:27Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!
07:29Corey, do you have any idea why I'm here?
07:31Obviously, he bought something and had it restored.
07:34This is a birthday gift.
07:36Ready?
07:36Yeah.
07:37One, two, three.
07:49Oh!
07:49Look at that!
07:51Wow!
07:51Holy crap!
07:52Look at the lines on the back of that.
07:54Dude, those fins look like they hurt you.
07:56Rick Harrison came to me and said that he wanted to get a gift for Corey.
07:59We came up with a car couch.
08:01That's what I'm talking about right there.
08:02I'm walking around, and all of a sudden, here it is.
08:05I see the car that we need.
08:08This is like a 1960 Cadillac four-door.
08:11Oh, man, this is so cool.
08:13Look at all the trim.
08:14This Cadillac is perfect.
08:17The fins are super pointy.
08:19They make a statement.
08:20The back end has the bumper.
08:21It's got all the trim.
08:22Everything on this thing is just perfect for the job.
08:26Tyler, go get Ralph, and we'll finagle.
08:28I gave Rick a specific quote, and if this car costs too much,
08:32along with the amount of work that I got into it,
08:34I won't be able to do the job.
08:35Hey, Ralph, this is a pretty nice car.
08:38Does it run?
08:39No, I don't believe so.
08:41Okay, how much do you want to get for it?
08:43$6,000 is what I'm asking.
08:45$6,000.
08:46The most I could pay is $5,000.
08:49That's about where I'm at right now.
08:54Okay, we could probably use $5,000.
08:56Awesome.
08:56Awesome.
08:57Thanks, Ralph.
08:57Very much.
08:58Thank you, thank you.
08:59I got so many ideas of what we're going to do to this thing,
09:01and I'm really excited right now to load this thing up,
09:04get it back to the shop, and start chainsawing that thing
09:07right in half.
09:08What does that weigh, like 7,000 pounds?
09:10Yeah, you're good.
09:11Tyler, this way.
09:12I'm trying.
09:13It ain't got no power steering.
09:16I can see that this car is just going to fit on the trailer.
09:19But there's going to be no room for Tyler to get out,
09:22and no power to open the power windows.
09:24I can't wait to see what Tyler's going to do when he realizes this.
09:28Does it fit?
09:30Hi.
09:31Does it fit?
09:32It fit.
09:34How are you going to get out?
09:37Oh, I can get out that.
09:38You got that?
09:40Watch.
09:41Oh, you got to be kidding me.
09:43He's really doing this?
09:44For America!
09:46Oh, that didn't work.
09:47What's he got in his hand?
09:48See this ignition?
09:50Oh!
09:51Don't throw nothing else through there.
09:53Don't go in!
09:56Watch out!
09:57Watch out!
09:57Watch out!
10:00Watch out!
10:01Watch your shoulder.
10:03I see it.
10:04That's nice.
10:06You're a little sweaty, bro.
10:09That car is heavy.
10:10I'm glad we're just cutting the back end of it off,
10:13because that is a brick.
10:16We scored big on this trip, and I'm glad I came along.
10:19Because if I didn't, Ron and Tyler would probably be towing that Scooby-Doo van right now,
10:24and not this sweet caddy.
10:27All right, let's get this thing unloaded.
10:29Dave and Roy, come on over here.
10:30Sweet!
10:31What's this?
10:32Check it out.
10:33What a beaut.
10:34Now that we got the car back to the shop, here comes the hard part.
10:37We have to figure out how to transform it into a couch.
10:41It's such a nice ride, I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep my eyes open as the guys
10:45cut it in half.
10:46Oh, my God.
10:48Look at the boat, man.
10:4959, 60, Sedan DeVille.
10:51Yeah, 60.
10:5260?
10:53Rick Harrison wanted us to build a car couch.
10:55So this is it.
10:56This is the one we're gonna build.
10:57So what we're gonna do is we're gonna whack it right here, cut it clean in half.
11:00You're gonna cut this classic in half?
11:03Yeah.
11:03You're gonna play taps while you're cutting into it?
11:07Because we're calling me the Cadillac killer.
11:10Yes.
11:10I love my Cadillacs, too.
11:12Yeah, there was only one Cadillac there.
11:14This says sexy.
11:16It says, I'm proud to be an American, and I built something badass.
11:19I love that.
11:20Yeah, really.
11:20That's good.
11:21Because it's true.
11:22Amen.
11:23Yeah.
11:23I got really excited when I saw this car, but the more I'm thinking about it, I'm afraid that if
11:29I cut it in half, I might be killing the car.
11:31You know, I just really don't have the heart to saw it in half.
11:35I just think it's a waste, actually.
11:37This car deserves to live.
11:38Live.
11:40Right.
11:40I bought it for the purpose of cutting it, and now I just, I just, I just can't do it.
11:45What I'm gonna do with this, I don't know, but I don't want to kill it.
11:48I need to find another one.
11:49I'm back to square one.
11:50So I need to research, call around, try to find the back of this car, because Cory's birthday's coming up,
11:56and I need to get jumping on it right now.
11:57I'm looking for a 60s Cadillac.
11:59The pieces, basically, I need the back end, the quarter panel, the bumper.
12:04Unfortunately, we don't have anything like that right now.
12:06You don't have nothing for a 60s Cadillac at all?
12:09Sorry, I can't help you.
12:12All I have right now is a 52, no fins though.
12:17All right, thanks.
12:18This is gonna take longer than I thought.
12:20Not only do I need a specific car, but I need a specific part to that car.
12:25Time is closing in, and I'm getting nervous.
12:36Looks like Brelli's back.
12:38Hey!
12:39A few days ago, I sent Brelli out on a pick with a box truck.
12:42He had a great pick a while back, so I'm hoping he's repeated that success.
12:46Maybe we'll get lucky, and they'll have the back of a Cadillac in there.
12:51I got a new employee.
12:52What is that?
12:54This is Papa.
12:55Nana wasn't enough?
12:56She needs a friend.
12:59Look at him.
13:00I hope this isn't the only thing you picked.
13:02The truck is full, but this is definitely the best thing I brought back.
13:06Leave it to Brelli to go look for vending machines and come back with a puppy.
13:10With another mouth to feed, hopefully he's got some good cargo that we can turn into cash.
13:14Two days, and 1,300 miles later...
13:20Oh!
13:21Boom!
13:21Whoa!
13:22You did good.
13:23You filled the truck.
13:24I guess he was doing more than shopping for pets, because there's a ton of good stuff here.
13:29If he got this haul for the right price, then we're gonna have some great options for customers wanting vintage
13:35machines.
13:36You did a great job.
13:37You looked awesome.
13:38I mean, you got, like, popcorn, you got peanut, you got, you know, Coke machines, scales.
13:42I mean, you got a lot of stuff.
13:43This peanut machine is way cool.
13:45They actually come in twins.
13:46There's a popcorn and a peanut just like it.
13:49This is probably late 30s, early 40s.
13:51We used to take your dime, you push it in here, pull this up, boom, you got hot goober peanuts.
13:56You can't find that nowadays, huh?
13:58Not for 10 cents.
13:59How much did you pay for this one?
14:00I paid 600 for it.
14:02I think that's great.
14:03We should be able to sell this real easily.
14:05This is the one I'm really digging, because it's like a carnival look.
14:08You know, it's made to look old.
14:09I'd say it's probably 70s.
14:11It's meant to go at an amusement park, you'd roll it out, and then they'd be serving right through the
14:16top.
14:16It's all stainless steel top, where you can see down.
14:20You can see it, you probably used to be able to see through this glass at one point in its
14:23life.
14:23The coolest thing is the lights that wrap all the way around, you know?
14:27It's all still there, you know?
14:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:29So what'd you pay for this?
14:30I got a package deal.
14:31I got this, this Coke machine, and the two scales I got for $1,900.
14:36This is worth, you know, a grand, just the way it sits.
14:38Yep.
14:39I want to check out those scales you had.
14:41Yeah, I got two of them.
14:42Bring that one over here.
14:43There's so much stuff here, I'm stunned.
14:45I'm going to have to send Brelli out on picks more often.
14:48He's got two of everything, including a Hamilton and a Peerless scale.
14:53I mean, these are both 1940s.
14:54This one's going to be cool, because there's nothing on it that tells your weight.
14:58It's basically going to spit your weight out.
15:00Like a printout?
15:01Yeah, something.
15:02Down here would be a token or a slip of paper or something to tell you how much you weighed.
15:07I don't even know how that actually operates on the inside.
15:10I mean, these are both awesome finds.
15:11It was a killer score.
15:12I mean, great, great job.
15:14Right.
15:14Get the things moved out of here so we can get them in the boneyard.
15:16All right.
15:17Good job.
15:18Sweet.
15:25Hey, Dad.
15:26Yeah?
15:28The pieces are in for the car couch.
15:30Awesome.
15:31Ever since we decided that we couldn't chop that complete 60s Cadillac in half,
15:35I've been looking day and night for a suitable replacement.
15:38I found this guy that has a big, huge junkyard, and all he does is chop up cars,
15:43and he said that he had quite a few pieces for a 60s Cadillac.
15:46And hopefully there's enough in there to build a couch out of.
15:50This is the Frankenstein's monster approach.
15:53Taking quarter panels from two different cars, a bumper from a third,
15:57piecing them all together, and making one couch.
16:00I sure hope this works.
16:01If not, we're going to be taking a saw to that other car after all.
16:05So is this what you wanted?
16:07I mean, is this the right car?
16:08It's a 60 Cadillac.
16:09I mean, it's got the fins.
16:11It's badass.
16:11It's got a great-looking bumper.
16:13It just needs a lot of work.
16:14This is a wreck.
16:16I mean, it's so rusted out.
16:17Coming from Nevada, I've never seen a car this rusted.
16:22All right.
16:23We're going to cut right in here.
16:24It's going to be cut right about there.
16:26The back wheel will.
16:26Right.
16:27Right now, all I want to do is build a brace across here.
16:30Go get me a couple of pieces of tubing and weld it from here to here,
16:34and weld it from the bottom, and weld it on the back to where we can at least get a
16:38frame going on.
16:39The tubing will help us figure out the dimensions of the couch, which will have its own frame.
16:44The size and shape of it is dependent on the size of the quarter panels and the bumper.
16:48This is going to be the back right here.
16:50That's going to be about the bottom.
16:52The fenders are going to be on the outside.
16:53And then what we're going to do is make a frame that goes inside here.
16:56All right?
16:57All right.
16:58This thing is going to be one big, badass project.
17:02Now that we've got the basic parts for the car couch, I have all hands on deck putting it together.
17:08Robert's on the frame.
17:09I have Manny cutting the quarter panels and welding them into shape.
17:13And Eric's on paint.
17:14Cory's birthday is just days away, so we're doing everything we can to get the job done on time.
17:19The last stage to every painted project is to give it a buff or polish to give it that extra
17:25shine.
17:26Sometimes buffing can leave some ugly swirl marks.
17:30What household item can you use to get rid of those nasty buff marks on a finished surface?
17:35A, talcum powder.
17:37B, glass cleaner.
17:39C, cornstarch.
17:41D, answers A and C.
17:43The answer and more coming up.
17:51What household item can you use to get rid of those nasty buff marks on your finished surface?
17:57The correct answer is D, talcum powder or cornstarch.
18:01First, you're going to wipe down the area with a damp rag.
18:03Then you're going to dust the area with either talcum powder or cornstarch.
18:07Then you're going to buff away.
18:13Then you're going to wipe down your area one last time.
18:18As you can see, all the swirl marks are gone.
18:21This is an easy and inexpensive way to finish off your painted project.
18:27Hey.
18:28Yeah.
18:29You got those wired together?
18:31Yeah, I got the speakers.
18:32Our car couch project began with a false start when I decided not to saw in half our first find.
18:38We did eventually get the right parts.
18:40The couch is coming together and I'm about to unveil it to Rick and Cory.
18:44Wow.
18:45That looks good.
18:46That looks killer.
18:49There's always a lot of pressure restoring something for Rick Harrison, so I hope I nailed it.
18:55All right, guys.
18:56I got it right here.
18:57All right.
18:58I can't wait to see it.
19:00I recently went over to Rick Dale's because I wanted to find something for Cory's birthday.
19:03I have no idea what's going to show up.
19:05Cory, you have any idea why I'm here?
19:08Obviously, he bought something and had it restored.
19:11Well, actually, it's your 30th birthday in a few days, so I wanted to think of something different.
19:16This is a birthday gift.
19:17You ready?
19:18Yeah.
19:18One, two, three.
19:21Oh, no way.
19:24That is amazing.
19:26Awesome.
19:26You are truly an artist, man.
19:28You really are.
19:29The license plate's the best part, man.
19:31It says it all, don't it?
19:32Absolutely.
19:32When you said you were going to make a couch, I thought you were going to make a couch.
19:35I didn't think you were going to make...
19:36Bam.
19:38Yeah.
19:38So what car is this?
19:40This is a 60 Cadillac.
19:42Cory, when your dad came over, he had the idea he wanted something with fins.
19:45And this thing is about the sharpest fin I could possibly find.
19:49The 1960 Cadillac, that's the ultimate fin right there.
19:53So it came right off the rear of a 60 Cadillac?
19:55Oh, no.
19:56There's a bigger story than that.
19:57I find this total car.
19:59Get it all the way back to the shop.
20:00Find out it's got a clear title.
20:02The interior's good.
20:03I didn't have the balls to cut the thing in half.
20:07I finally found the exact same rear end off a 60 Cadillac.
20:11It's all pieces and stuff.
20:12Just the back end.
20:13All of this in here was all rust and we had to repair it.
20:16And then we ended up sending it to the chrome shop and they did a great job.
20:19I just love how they used chrome back then.
20:21They don't use it today.
20:22And this thing just says, you, I'm driving a Cadillac.
20:25Yeah, that's right.
20:26This project was a huge challenge.
20:28Definitely a lot of bumps in the road.
20:30We did so much body work on it to get it to look like this.
20:34I'm really glad that they loved it.
20:36You put the speakers in it.
20:38Does it have an armrest?
20:39Has the armrest.
20:40Comes down.
20:42Push on here.
20:43Comes up.
20:44You've got the cup holder.
20:46And then it's all set up for your phone.
20:49The bottom down here with the license plate.
20:52When you push on it, there's the stereo right down inside there.
20:55It's got a remote control.
20:56The lights come on.
20:58The stereo comes on with one plug.
21:00So you ready to hear this bad boy?
21:01Let's hear it.
21:02Here we go.
21:08That is cool.
21:09It sounds awesome, man.
21:13Pretty cool, huh?
21:14It looks good.
21:15It sounds good.
21:16Man, I want to sit it up.
21:17You better put it on the floor first.
21:19Put it on the ground first.
21:20Have fun with it, son.
21:21You lift it off.
21:22You're a big boy.
21:22Ready?
21:23I mean, the thing looks great and it sounds awesome, but hey, it's a couch.
21:26So I actually got to sit in it to get the full effect here.
21:31This is awesome.
21:31Pops, come check it out.
21:36Maybe I should just put it in my office and keep it.
21:38Yeah, have fun getting it up those stairs, buddy.
21:42Thanks, man.
21:42I appreciate it.
21:43You bet.
21:44Thank you, buddy.
21:44You bet.
21:45No problem.
21:46Let me get you some money.
21:47Okay.
21:48Happy birthday, buddy.
21:48Thank you, man.
21:49Overall, I am more than happy with it.
21:52Once again, Rick Dale worked his magic.
21:54You know, man, it's definitely one of the coolest things I own.
21:57You know, I'm better not.
21:57I'm not.
21:58That's right.
21:58I've got the same.
21:58You know, you can only reach the ceiling.
21:58There's nothing more.
21:58I'm.
21:58You're not.
21:59You're not.
