00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02We got a floor sander from the 1920s.
00:04Did you check it?
00:05Does it work?
00:06No, it does not run.
00:07On the inside, it's got thousands of feet of wire.
00:09And if they're done, it gets fairly expensive.
00:12I've been walking all day, and my feet hurt.
00:14Want a little tip from the old man?
00:15Sure.
00:16You have to get pedicures.
00:17That literally sounds like the most unmanly thing
00:19I've ever heard.
00:20Whenever we get a new shipment of items delivered,
00:23it always feels like Christmas morning
00:25when I start tearing into those boxes.
00:27These are awesome.
00:28And they're rare.
00:30Wow.
00:33Look at a man's workbench.
00:35You see his passions.
00:38His work's in progress.
00:42The things that drive him crazy.
00:46Projects that?
00:48You get the point.
00:49Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:52And this is ours.
00:54American Restoration.
01:02Rick's Restoration is a family business
01:04that will hopefully be thriving long after I'm gone.
01:09So when a client rolls in with an item
01:11that ties in generations of their own family business together,
01:15it really gets me excited.
01:17Hey.
01:18Hi.
01:18Are you Rick?
01:19Yeah, I'm Rick.
01:20Good to meet you.
01:21Nice to meet you.
01:21My name's Matt.
01:22Matt.
01:22So what can I do for you?
01:23I got a floor sander from the 1920s I want you to take a look at.
01:26Oh, yeah.
01:26Cool.
01:27Sounds cool.
01:27Let's see.
01:30Oh, my God.
01:31Wow.
01:32Let's get that out.
01:32I did custom wood floors for a living.
01:34My father did it.
01:35My grandfather did it before him.
01:36What I love about this floor sander is it's an antique piece
01:39that my grandfather probably would have used back when he was sanding floors.
01:44It's from 1925.
01:45Yeah.
01:46I picked it up at an auction in my hometown.
01:48Uh-huh.
01:48I'm a third generation floor sander, so I thought it would be a neat piece to have.
01:52The current condition is rough.
01:53It's non-operable.
01:55It needs a little bit of love.
01:56The plan after I get it restored is to place it in my business as a showpiece.
01:59Do you know exactly how it used to be?
02:02There was no cover.
02:02This was open.
02:03Right.
02:04So this went like this.
02:05Yep.
02:05Wow, look at this chain.
02:06This is ancient.
02:07You can't even get this kind of chain.
02:08Oh, that.
02:08And then this was the belt that ran the dust collector.
02:13Oh, okay.
02:14Yep.
02:15Would there be a bag here probably?
02:16There would be a canvas bag off of this.
02:18Did you check it?
02:18Does it work?
02:19No, it does not run.
02:22It just looks so big and gnarly.
02:24I mean, look at the size of that motor.
02:25On the inside, it's got thousands of feet of wire.
02:28And nowadays, to wind motor, I mean, it gets fairly expensive.
02:32So we'll do that.
02:32With the handles being all wood, it'd be nice to have those restored to natural.
02:36The drum itself, we can go ahead and mount a new one.
02:38We'll take this off.
02:39Okay.
02:39We can soak all this stuff that's rusted, and it basically just breaks it all down.
02:43What do you think this was colored?
02:44Our company colors are bright red.
02:45So if you want to maybe work a little red into it, that'd be great.
02:49Okay.
02:49So what do you think it's going to cost me to get it redone?
02:52Well, to doll it all up, make it look awesome and running, I'm looking between 45 and 4800.
03:00Well, I don't think I'm going to find another one, so let's do it.
03:02All right.
03:02All right.
03:03Awesome.
03:03Awesome.
03:04Let's go in the office right up, and we'll get it started.
03:06All righty.
03:07My hope is that when I come back, that it looks like a showroom piece and is running perfectly.
03:19What's up?
03:20I'm working in the boneyard.
03:21What do you think?
03:22What?
03:23You're going to just sit there?
03:24You're going to help?
03:24I'm going to sit here.
03:25I've been walking all day.
03:27My dad's been having me run around everywhere.
03:28I'm tired and my feet hurt.
03:30Tyler's bitching and moaning about how bad his feet hurt.
03:34I got a great solution.
03:35You want a little tip from the old man?
03:37Sure.
03:38You have to get pedicures.
03:40You do that?
03:40This is the key to your whole soul.
03:43That literally sounds like the most unmanly thing I've ever heard.
03:46Dude, it's the best.
03:47So you go in, they just take care of your feet completely.
03:50They massage them.
03:51Those toes have had pedicures.
03:52Are you sure?
03:53Because, I mean, they're pretty rough.
03:55I don't really believe, Ron, that he goes and gets pedicures because his feet are disgusting.
04:00I don't know, dude.
04:01Humor me, all right?
04:02What we can do is, while everybody's out at lunch, you and I go get it done.
04:05All right.
04:06You can't tell anybody, though.
04:08I'm not going to tell a soul.
04:11I deal with clients from all across the country.
04:14And I recently had one send me an old Apple vending machine he wants me to check out.
04:19I had never seen a vending machine that sold fruit before.
04:22So I asked my friend, Mark, for some history on it.
04:25The company that made these, called ABT Manufacturing.
04:29Okay.
04:29One of the first things they ever made was called the Big Apple.
04:33Oh, and that's this.
04:33And this is this.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Very cool.
04:36And it actually dates about 1930.
04:38Unfortunately, the customer can't make it to Las Vegas, but I'd really love to take on this project.
04:43So I already got the client on the phone for a consult to see if we can make this thing
04:47happen.
04:48You know, I know you want to restore it, but I want to pick your brain a little bit.
04:51Like how you see it being done.
04:53You know, the paint job that's on here, it's got quite a few different coats of paint.
04:57Keep in mind, it's done in the 30s.
04:59And originally, it came in that cream color by the looks underneath all the paint jobs.
05:04I guess what I was thinking is more of a burgundy dark red metallic, sort of like an apple would
05:10be.
05:10Okay.
05:11So not real red.
05:12You want it like an apple.
05:13You wanted that burgundy red.
05:14Correct.
05:15With a little metal flake in it to where it looks delicious, sort of like an apple.
05:19I thought for striping something in a green, like a Granny Smith apple.
05:23Okay.
05:24Most customers want their project to look just like it did back in the day.
05:28But there's no rule book for this.
05:30If they're looking for a flashy showpiece and the original colors fall flat, they have every right to jazz it
05:36up.
05:36With that apple red and green color scheme, I think this will look amazing.
05:42There's a lot of aluminum.
05:44We can polish all that out.
05:46We got to do some art, you know, where the little paper sleeves went.
05:50We'll put new glass in it, do all the body work, get everything all polished out, make the thing totally
05:54work.
05:55I'm looking at about, I don't know, I'm looking at about four grand to do the whole thing, get it
06:01all done.
06:01But I think it's going to look pretty cool done.
06:03In fact, I know it is.
06:05It's a very cool piece.
06:06That works.
06:07You want that?
06:08Yes, sir.
06:09Okay.
06:10I'll get this thing started, and you're going to be probably the only one in the state with one.
06:14So that's pretty cool.
06:15All right, Rick, thanks.
06:16Nice talking to you.
06:17Thank you, Dana.
06:23Hey, Kyle.
06:24How are you doing?
06:25Good.
06:25Happy birthday.
06:26Thanks, Rick.
06:27Happy birthday.
06:28I forgot.
06:29Let's see what my present is.
06:30The overall design of the drum sander hasn't changed much over the past century.
06:34But they definitely could have used a few extra safety features back then.
06:38Okay, to make it powered up, we'd have a long extension cord.
06:42On one end, you'd basically have two alligator clips, and on the other end, you'd have two eyes,
06:46and you'd come right up here, and you'd tie those eyes in, and you'd run it over the power box
06:51and go right into power.
06:52So you had as much power as possible.
06:54Very dangerous.
06:55Right.
06:56Very, very dangerous.
06:57So you got power.
06:58We have to build a cord for them.
06:59We'll clean up the switch, fix the switch, make it all work.
07:02I want to use all this porcelain.
07:03See how it's got the chain?
07:05Right.
07:05It runs the drum, and then as it's turning, this little vacuum chute sucks up all the sawdust, and it
07:11goes up this tube, through here, and then into a bag that used to go right here.
07:16Sanding wood creates a ton of sawdust, so we have to get the vacuum suction working, too, or this thing's
07:22gonna make one hell of a dust cloud.
07:24This is the drum that held the sandpaper.
07:26We need to remove the felt, and then try to reproduce it in some way.
07:30Okay.
07:30I want to get this thing torn down right away, and I'll get Cowboy to come out and give you
07:34a hand, okay?
07:35On my birthday?
07:36Yeah, I know.
07:36Sorry.
07:37Happy birthday, Kyle.
07:38Keening me up with Cowboy on my birthday.
07:40Yeah.
07:40It's not that bad.
07:42Oh, it is a little bad.
07:46It's falling apart.
07:48Let's try it.
07:51There you go.
07:52Oh, Lord, that's heavy.
07:53We need to get this motor to this shop, though.
07:56Is that it?
07:57Yeah.
07:58Good.
07:58Consider that your birthday gift.
08:01Hey, where have you guys been?
08:02We were at lunch.
08:03No, you haven't been to lunch, I can tell.
08:05We went and got pedicures.
08:06You what?
08:07I thought they were for girls.
08:10You remember what it looked like, right?
08:11It was pretty busted up and rusty, and I hope you did something really great to it.
08:16One, two, three.
08:18Come on, Rick.
08:18Is this the same machine that I've sent out here?
08:20Yeah.
08:21It died well.
08:32We're restoring an Apple vending machine from the 1930s.
08:36Brett Lee is stripping off all the old paint in the bead blaster.
08:39Kyle is taking out all the deads.
08:42And Dave is handling all the welding work, putting the machine back together and refabbing
08:46the new corn box.
08:47Since the guys have all the Apple vendor work covered, I'm going to take an extended lunch
08:51break.
08:56Okay, so this stuff just came in?
08:57Yeah, it just got chopped off.
08:58That's cool.
08:59Whenever we get a new shipment of items delivered, it always feels like Christmas morning when
09:04I start tearing into those boxes.
09:06You never know what kind of goodies you're going to get.
09:09Wow.
09:10Oh.
09:11It's definitely a Schwinn.
09:12I know that.
09:13It says that it's a 1937 Schwinn bicycle.
09:15I'd like it restored and get a new sprocket.
09:18A lot of bikes, you can tell what they are, how old they are by this sprocket.
09:22The deluxe models in the late 30s and early 40s had a heart-shaped pattern in the sprocket,
09:28nicknamed the Sweetheart Sprocket, and are really rare.
09:31So if I was the customer, I definitely wouldn't swap it out for a new one.
09:35It's got a lot of body work going on.
09:38This fender's beat up.
09:39That's bad.
09:39Really bad.
09:40The spokes are basically trash.
09:42When we try to polish them out enough to start chroming them, they get so thin, the
09:46tire basically collapses.
09:48So we'd have to put brand new spokes in here to be better off.
09:51Is this bar going across?
09:52Was that holding the basket?
09:54No.
09:54No?
09:55No, that's basically for support.
09:57Huh.
09:57Just gave strength to these handlebars.
09:58So what do you think this is going to cost?
10:01Rough.
10:02It'd be right around $3,800.
10:03Do the whole bike.
10:04When this is done, it's really cool looking.
10:07Oh, this is cool.
10:09Wow.
10:11These are awesome.
10:12And they're rare.
10:14It says, I would like to get my airplane pedal car restored.
10:17I want my kids to be able to use it.
10:19And I'd like it in original condition.
10:21It's like a pedal car, but it's a pedal plane.
10:24In the late 40s and 50s, pedal cars were all the rage.
10:28This Navy-themed Murray pursuit plane wasn't as popular as the more traditional wheeled vehicles.
10:34So fewer were made, making it all the more rare and valuable.
10:38There was a bunch of manufacturers that came out with these press toys after the war.
10:42They made these big pieces of steel.
10:45And they made a press that was shaped like this.
10:48And you, boom, with a hydraulic press, it'd come down and there's your half of your plane.
10:52Oh.
10:52And then, boom.
10:53And then there's the other half.
10:54And they'd come in and spot weld it.
10:55They came in a bunch of different colors.
10:57This one looks like the silver and blue one.
10:58Right.
10:59The prop used to come out of here like this.
11:01And then when you actually drove it, you would move forward at the same time your prop would spin.
11:07The back wheel is here.
11:09So you'd drive like this.
11:10It's a tail dragger.
11:12This is rare.
11:13It's a great piece of Americana.
11:15It's so cool.
11:16Total restoration, probably 2,800.
11:18This will be fun.
11:19Brings back memories, doesn't it?
11:20Yeah.
11:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:22Yeah, I had a rocket.
11:23It was faster.
11:24Poor she did.
11:26I can't believe I'm doing this.
11:27Hey, you're out of the shop.
11:29How about that?
11:29Ron's dragging me off to get my very first pedicure.
11:32And I'm totally not comfortable with this kind of girly crap, but my feet have been killing
11:37me and I'll try anything at this point.
11:39Is this it?
11:40This is it.
11:41Tyler fought me tooth and nail on this, but man, I know he's gonna love this.
11:46I feel sorry for you, though.
11:48I didn't know toenails could hold that much crap.
11:51You haven't freaked out yet?
11:52You do some weird things.
11:54Once my feet started hurting a lot, I jumped in this mode and it's like, man, this feels
11:59good.
12:00How you doing, buddy?
12:01Feeling relaxed?
12:02Yeah, I'm feeling good, I gotta admit.
12:03I don't know what happened, but after I stopped fighting it and it kind of just kicked
12:07back, it felt like all the tension mellowed away.
12:10And I didn't expect that.
12:12So, what do you think about color?
12:14What?
12:15For your toenails.
12:15I'm not painting my toenails.
12:17That's part of the deal.
12:18No, that was not part of our deal.
12:20Throw it out there.
12:21Never know.
12:21Are you gonna do it?
12:23I'm gonna ask for like a clear coat on it.
12:24No.
12:25To strengthen my nails.
12:26No.
12:27French tip, a little white just on the tops and the gloss.
12:30Oh, that's next.
12:31Oh, no, it's not.
12:32I think it's time to get the hell out of here because Ron just went from zero to creepy
12:37in like 10 seconds flat.
12:40You can hear my flip-flop thing.
12:45No, your flip-flops are saying wash me.
12:56The owner of the apple vending machine wants this as a showpiece in his collection.
13:01So, instead of the original cream color, we're going with a deep apple red so it really catches
13:06the eye.
13:06What color are Granny Smith apples?
13:10To stay with the apple theme, Ted is doing a custom Granny Smith green to do all the
13:15final pinstriping and the apple accents.
13:30We're still working on this 1920s floor sander.
13:33This thing has decades of rust and grime all over it, so it needs some serious cleaning.
13:39Robert's stripping off all the old varnish on the wooden handle.
13:43Bretley's bead blast, in a way, layers of rust on these parts.
13:47Bud is cleaning up the electrical switch that controls the power.
13:51And he's also polishing the heck out of the brass pieces.
13:55With all this elbow grease and hard work, this piece is really starting to pop.
14:01And that's the color I need.
14:03Hey, where have you guys been?
14:05We're at lunch.
14:06No, you haven't been to lunch, I can tell.
14:08We went and got pedicures.
14:09You what?
14:10I thought they were for girls.
14:13See, this is exactly why I didn't want Ron opening his big fat mouth about this.
14:18You don't have to have a pedicure, you just go home and clip your toenails.
14:21Ew.
14:21That's what I thought, too.
14:22I was on the same page as you guys.
14:23When we first started, I was like, no way.
14:25And after we got there and kind of got into it, I mean, it felt good.
14:28My feet feel better, that's for sure.
14:29With them nice, relaxed feet, you should be ready to work.
14:32Get back to work.
14:33God.
14:34Work?
14:34I can't work.
14:35I just got my toes done.
14:38We've been restoring a 1930s Apple vending machine.
14:41And the guys are carefully piecing it back together again.
14:47How are you?
14:48Good.
14:48How are you?
14:49I'm Rick.
14:49I'm Dana.
14:50Hi.
14:50Good to meet you.
14:51Luckily, the customer was able to make it out here to see it firsthand.
14:54It's right over here.
14:55It's right there.
14:56All hidden away for you, ready to go.
14:58I wanted to get it restored because I think it's very unique.
15:00And it was just different, and I never saw anything like it before, and that's why I bought it.
15:04All right, so you remember what this thing used to look like, right?
15:07It was pretty busted up and rusty, and I hope you did something really great to it.
15:11Yeah, here we go.
15:12You ready?
15:13One, two, three.
15:16Oh, my God.
15:17That's amazing.
15:18What do you think?
15:19Come on, Rick.
15:20Is this the same machine that I've sent out here?
15:22Yeah, I've never seen one.
15:23I haven't either.
15:24And I don't think I ever will ever again.
15:26It is a very unique, and I want to say rare machine.
15:29I don't think too many people even have one of these.
15:32I think the colors are great.
15:34So you nailed it with the red and the green.
15:36If you can see the red, it looks like a candy apple.
15:39It's got a little bit of flake in it to where it looks real, real brilliant.
15:42Translucent almost.
15:43Yeah, and then the green on the outside, it just sort of brought it all together.
15:47And I think it just, together with the green apples in it, or if it had red apples in it.
15:51I mean, it's basically just, it's going to be awesome.
15:53Well, I think the contrast is great, and I think it makes people want to have an apple.
15:57Oh, yeah.
15:57It looks like you want one now, huh?
15:58Bit caramel, huh?
16:00Caramel.
16:01That's another machine.
16:03Everything was rusted, so what we did was we took the internals where it used to hold the apple,
16:07and then we put rubber on each one of those fingers so when the apple goes through it doesn't bruise
16:11it.
16:12You have a nice, clean, unbruised apple.
16:14Terrific.
16:15We put all new glass so it looks nice and clean.
16:17Up in this top here, redid the instruction plate that used to be right in there.
16:21On this trim that's around here, we ended up polishing all that.
16:25It's all aluminum and everything, so we tried to get everything as nice as we possibly could.
16:29The coin bezel itself, it was really, really pitted, so we ended up polishing it out the best we could,
16:34and then we plated it so that it would stay like that.
16:37It's beautiful.
16:38The back, that other piece of stainless was rusted out, so he's got a brand new piece of stainless in
16:43the back.
16:43It has that mirror effect on it, but this was sort of the final part I put on there.
16:46We put delicious apples five cents right in the front because just as you're walking up to it, it's pretty
16:51much wow, you know?
16:52Yeah, it has a lot of pop to it.
16:53It's beautiful.
16:54Thanks.
16:56Well, it looks great, Rick, but does it work?
16:58Yeah, that's always a key, right?
16:59Let's see here.
17:00Just put the coin in, press it down, go about three-quarters of the way down, and then the apple
17:05drops.
17:09Good catch.
17:12Oh, that was a juicy one.
17:15Best apple I had in 20 years.
17:16I can't wait to get it home so I can put it with my other machines, but this one's going
17:20to find a special place
17:21because it's so unique and it looks so good.
17:45The answer and more coming up.
17:53Which method works best to give your wood project that extra rich enhanced grain?
17:58The correct answer is C, torch it.
18:01To create a darkened finish with a beautiful grain, I like to give it a burned finish with a propane
18:06torch.
18:07Here's how you do it.
18:08Making sure that you move the flame back and forth the same direction as the grain.
18:14Having the flame just barely touch the wood enough to give it the brown that you want.
18:20Here's one that's totally finished, all cleared over, and as you can see, the grain really pops and sticks out.
18:28And it's very simple to do.
18:33We've been restoring a 1925 floor sander, and all the little details are finally coming together.
18:39Ed rewired the electrical with a modern power cord.
18:42So now the sander can plug into a 220 wall socket without electrocuting anybody.
18:47And Kyle installed a new cork pad on the drum and reassembled all the dust collector hardware.
18:53I'm really happy with the way this piece came out. I'm just hoping it's everything the customer expected.
19:00It's right there, man.
19:01All right.
19:03My family's in the flooring business for three generations.
19:05And to see a piece that my grandfather could have used when he was my age is just incredible.
19:10When you dropped it off, I mean, do you really remember exactly what it looked like?
19:13It was a mess.
19:14The motor was broken.
19:15There was parts laying all over the place.
19:17And it was ugly.
19:18It was ugly.
19:19You ready?
19:19I'm ready.
19:20Here we go.
19:22One, two, three.
19:25That's incredible.
19:27What do you think?
19:28That's nice.
19:28I like it.
19:29It's just incredible to see the difference.
19:31The chrome, the paint, from what it looked like before it was broken, it was rusty.
19:36Rick was able to do everything I wanted him to do and more.
19:38I just can't say how happy I am with it.
19:40It looks great.
19:41There's a lot of work there.
19:42I just can't tell you.
19:43I can imagine.
19:44We painted a red to match your company color, right?
19:47Yeah, the red's perfect.
19:48We got all this stuff all powder coated, so now it's like really tough paint, so you
19:51can beat it around.
19:52Robert was working on all this wood.
19:54I mean, it's beautiful wood.
19:55You wouldn't even have known when you saw it, you know?
19:58Yeah.
19:58So now it looks like it should.
19:59I could not find one of those chains anywhere, so luckily, we ended up getting it all cleaned
20:03up, and then we sent it out to get it plated.
20:06So I'm pretty happy with that.
20:06That looks incredible.
20:07Yeah.
20:08The motor just looks incredible with the black and the chrome.
20:10What happened was, is the original one, there was no shields on the top, and it was
20:14all busted out.
20:15So we did some research, and I found out that this was the motor that actually came
20:19on it in the day.
20:20So now it's got two horsepower instead of one, and it halts.
20:23The drum looks great.
20:25I love the chrome, the motor, and this looks really nice.
20:30When I brought it to you, it didn't work.
20:31Yeah.
20:32Does it now?
20:33Yeah, it works.
20:33I want to show it to you.
20:34Want to check it out?
20:35Perfect, yes.
20:36Yeah, let me get some sandpaper.
20:37I've never seen the machine work, so I really hope that it's what I expect.
20:41You've done this before, right?
20:43A couple hundred times.
20:44If you need any pointers, let me know.
20:46Oh, yeah.
20:47All right, so you ready to see this thing work?
20:48I'm ready.
20:48I can't wait.
20:49All right.
20:49Here we go.
20:50It's got some serious torque.
20:52It does.
20:53Here we go.
20:54See how the dust box is working?
20:56Yeah, it's sucking it up inside there.
20:58Working just like it's supposed to.
21:00Pretty cool, huh?
21:01That's awesome.
21:02It's a good way to do your toenails.
21:05From what it looked like when it came in, I can't believe you made it work.
21:08Yeah.
21:08That's great.
21:09My plan is to take this back and use it as a display piece in my office, and I can't
21:13wait to hear what my customers think about it.
21:15Spread on, bud.
21:16Thanks.
21:16Thank you very much.
21:17You bet.
21:18Anytime.
21:21All right, boys.
21:22Through here.
21:23This is it.
21:24This is it, dude.
21:24All right.
21:24What are you guys doing here?
21:26It's Bradley's turn.
21:26We talked him into getting a pedicure, man.
21:28Really?
21:28Yeah.
21:31No way.
21:32No.
21:33I thought you didn't get pedicures.
21:35I'm not getting a pedicure.
21:36Hey, Rick.
21:37Go ahead and take off your boots and we'll get started.
21:40Well, you got safety goggles on just in case your toenails fly off and hit you?
21:44You can leave, man.
21:45That was well worth it.
21:46Thank you for bringing me up here.
21:49Dang it.
21:49Well, I'm never going to hear the end of this.
21:51Ever.
21:51I just want to say, first of all, look at the car.
21:51I'm never going to hear the door.
21:51I've been to the mayor.
21:52Heard.
21:52Heard.
21:52Heard.
