00:00That thing's gigantic!
00:02Up next on American Restoration.
00:05What's up chum?
00:05What's happening Rich?
00:07What do you got there?
00:08Pedal car, what you think?
00:09It's cool.
00:10I was thinking we could kind of make it look like a low rider.
00:14Why don't we just do it stock? I think it's going to sell better.
00:17Every now and then, the customer doesn't know best.
00:20But what do you got?
00:21I've come to get my 1965 Honda Super Hot restored.
00:24This one actually had chrome tanks on it, right?
00:26Yes.
00:26I'm hoping I can find a tank for this thing.
00:28My dad sent me over here.
00:30He said we're doing a 65 Honda Super Hawk.
00:33I believe is what he said.
00:34You believe that's what he said?
00:36Yeah.
00:36Most people come in and know exactly what they want.
00:41Look at a man's workbench.
00:43You see his passions.
00:46His work's in progress.
00:50The things that drive him crazy.
00:54Projects that?
00:56You get the point.
00:57Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
01:00And this is ours.
01:03American Restoration.
01:07The majority of the items that we get need a ton of work.
01:10And that's fun for me.
01:12What's not fun is when they come in with missing parts.
01:15Because most of the time, these parts are rare.
01:17And finding them can be a pain in the ass.
01:24Hey, how are you?
01:25Hi.
01:25I'm Mark.
01:26I'm Mark.
01:26I'm Rick.
01:27Nice to meet you, Rick.
01:28Good to meet you.
01:28But what do you got?
01:29It's my first full-size motorcycle.
01:31I've come to Rick's restoration today to get my 1965 Honda Super Hawk motorcycle restored.
01:37Come on over here.
01:38All right.
01:38It steers like an old bike.
01:40It is an old bike.
01:41Yeah.
01:41It's cool.
01:44I've had it since the mid-70s.
01:47I was probably 13, 14 when I got this bike.
01:50And it's been through a lot.
01:52I used it as a dirt bike.
01:53I used it as a street bike.
01:55I used it as a fun bike.
01:57Yeah, everything bike.
01:57Totally everything bike.
01:58I mean, this bike came out in 1961 and ran until like 1968.
02:03This bike was built to change the whole biking industry.
02:06I mean, it really was.
02:07This was a 100-mile-an-hour bike.
02:09It is.
02:09Nothing even came close to that.
02:11And this thing set records.
02:12They were running the dirt with them.
02:14They did all kinds of cool stuff with this design.
02:16They stopped in 1968, but they became collectible immediately.
02:19So that's very cool.
02:21This one actually had chrome tanks on it, right?
02:23Yes.
02:23I'm worried about the tank.
02:25I'm hoping I can find a tank for this thing.
02:27The SuperHawk gas tanks were specific for each model.
02:31But they're not easy to come by, so finding one could be a problem.
02:35When you put it away, did it run?
02:37It did in 1982 or so.
02:39Okay.
02:40You didn't seize it, did you?
02:41No, no, I didn't seize it.
02:42First, I'm going to go ahead and research it out a little bit to where I find out colors,
02:46what was right, what was wrong, where I can get parts.
02:48On the tank, I'll try to get an original tank.
02:51Right.
02:51Even if it needs a little bit of work, we'll fix it all up and make it right.
02:54Motor transmission, we'll go through that.
02:55We'll take the wheels apart, take the spokes out, go through the brakes.
02:58And getting the whole thing done, nuts to chrome, I'm looking at 8800 to do the whole thing.
03:03Okay?
03:04Okay.
03:04So what do you think?
03:06I think it's going to be fantastic.
03:09I hope it is.
03:09I've been waiting a long time to get this bike redone.
03:12All right.
03:12Cool.
03:13All right.
03:13I can't wait to start.
03:14Let's go in the office and take care of some paperwork and we'll get that in the run.
03:18I want it to be just as if it came off of the factory floor.
03:21I want to be able to ride it.
03:22I want to be able to show it.
03:23I want to be able to show it with my other bikes.
03:25I just hope that Rick can get that gas tank.
03:30Tyler.
03:30What?
03:31First of all, what are you doing working on your truck on work hours?
03:35Well, I got no other time to work on it.
03:36Well, yes you do.
03:37There's 24 hours around the day, Will.
03:39I'm here at 12.
03:39You're only here at 8 hours.
03:40Okay, you're 12 hours.
03:41There's 12 more.
03:42Okay, second of all...
03:43I'd like to have some kind of light.
03:44Okay, second of all, we got in this Superhawk Honda.
03:47Okay.
03:47And it's missing the gas tank.
03:49All right.
03:49I need you to get out there and I need you to find it.
03:50I'm really nervous about finding the missing gas tank for the Superhawk.
03:54The bike is almost 50 years old.
03:56And finding the tank for this exact model is going to take a little luck.
04:01It's got chrome sides.
04:02It's got those little side rubber covers on it.
04:05You know, it's got a lot of chrome on it.
04:07It's out there somewhere.
04:08You got to go look around.
04:09It needs to be in town somewhere.
04:10Where?
04:10I need it quick.
04:11Ace.
04:12Ace might have one.
04:12He's got so much...
04:13But I've heard about him.
04:14I mean, he's a pain and I mean, he just...
04:16It's not easy to deal with.
04:17From what I hear, Ace is a huge pain in the ass.
04:20A complete nightmare.
04:21I'm going to look around other places before I have to go to him.
04:24That'll be my last resort.
04:25Fine.
04:26All right.
04:26Fine.
04:27All right.
04:27Let's get it done.
04:27Should I go right now?
04:28Now.
04:37Hey, what's up, man?
04:39Bradley.
04:40What?
04:40Chum, what are you doing here?
04:42Hey, what's happening, Rick?
04:43How you doing?
04:44Me and the old man recently bought this Pelicar, so I'm bringing it down to Rick's today to see
04:49if he can restore it for us.
04:50Let's take it inside.
04:52Let's take it inside.
04:52I've known Chum for a long time now because his boss, Rick Harrison, is one of my biggest
04:57customers.
04:57They always bring in cool stuff, but it's usually Rick that comes by.
05:01It's interesting that today, they sent Chum Solo.
05:04You know what it is?
05:06Um, well, I couldn't figure it out.
05:07I was thinking just the old 50s style car.
05:09It's 50s.
05:11What it is, is it's a Murray, is the brand of it.
05:13This was designed after a Studebaker champion.
05:15So this was the very first car that the Murray company came out with.
05:20Awesome.
05:21Pedal cars are a cool thing.
05:22A lot of kids admired them, and a lot of adults that actually grew through that era remember
05:26them, and that's why it's such a big collectible.
05:29Did you ever have a pedal car?
05:30Come on.
05:31You know I have a big wheel.
05:34I'm an 80s baby, so it's a little before me.
05:37Right.
05:37This is more the old man's time, so I think that's why he wants me to come get it fixed
05:40up.
05:41So, did the old man tell you how he wants it to look when he's done?
05:44No, he didn't really tell me what he wanted.
05:46I was thinking we could go a candy paint with maybe a little metal flake in there.
05:52Um, some rims, not these stock rims, something that sets it apart, you know?
05:57And maybe like some leaf on there.
06:00You know, kind of make it look like a lowrider.
06:02Every now and then, the customer doesn't know best.
06:05Why don't we just do it like more, do it sort of stock.
06:09I think it's going to sell better.
06:11It looks like it used to be at originally red right here.
06:14It looks pretty blue though.
06:16Yeah, I think somebody took a shaker can to it.
06:19At one point, it went all the way to rust, and then they painted right over top of the rust.
06:22So, I would go original red.
06:24Okay.
06:24Um, we'll chrome this, okay?
06:27The hood ornament.
06:28We'll chrome the hubcaps.
06:29So, it's going to have a little sparkle, a little pizazz, a little pimp my ride.
06:33Alright, well you're the professional, Rick.
06:35So, we'll do what you say.
06:36I think they'll be happy with the finished product.
06:38Alright.
06:39Okay.
06:39Hope so.
06:40Alright, let's go in here.
06:41I want to show you around a little bit.
06:43If I know anything about the Harrisons, it's that they want to move their inventory quickly.
06:48And with a pedal car like this, the best way to do that is with a classic restoration.
06:53Hey, Rick!
06:54What's up?
06:55Mike!
06:55Big Mike's brought in a bunch of crazy stuff.
06:59F***!
06:59That thing's gigantic!
07:01There is one more thing though that I want to show you.
07:03What are you talking about?
07:04If he and Brett Lee change something on this, I'm going to be pissed.
07:08Tyler, you know you ruined this car.
07:21Tyler, what's up, man?
07:22What's up?
07:23I heard Chum want to trick out the pedal car that he brought in.
07:26I got a pretty badass idea for it, so I want to pitch it to Tyler and see what he
07:30thinks.
07:30We got these lights, right?
07:32Right.
07:33Put them underneath the pedal car.
07:35So that they just shine down?
07:37Yeah.
07:37My dad usually likes to restore collectibles to their original stock condition.
07:42He really doesn't trick things out, so I don't know if he'll be down with this idea.
07:46We're new school, Chum's new school.
07:49We got this old school pedal car with the new school feel.
07:52Yeah, I feel you.
07:53Let me see it.
07:54Light it up.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Here we go.
07:57Boom.
07:58That's pretty cool.
07:59That's better than I thought it was going to be.
08:01It's bright too, so...
08:02Yeah.
08:03I have a feeling that Chum is going to dig this.
08:05Oh, no.
08:06No, I think you're right.
08:07So...
08:07Yeah, well, let's go get working on it.
08:08Come on.
08:09Alright, let's do it.
08:09I'm taking a big risk going behind my dad's back, especially with this being a Brentley
08:14idea.
08:15I just hope this doesn't blow up in my face.
08:30Hey, Rick, what's up, buddy?
08:32Mike!
08:33It's good to see you, buddy.
08:34Good to see you.
08:35Good to see you.
08:36Hope you're hungry for work.
08:37I'm always hungry.
08:38What do you got?
08:38You gotta look at this thing.
08:39Okay.
08:40Come here, check this out.
08:41You ready?
08:42Yeah.
08:45That thing's gigantic.
08:47Yeah.
08:48I'm going to get it out.
08:49Can we look at it?
08:49Let's get it out.
08:50Big Mike is one of my regulars, and he's brought in a bunch of crazy stuff.
08:55But this is the biggest, weirdest, flying saucer-looking thing he's ever brought to my door.
09:01I can't wait to see what he wants out of this.
09:03It's Officer Big Mac.
09:04What do you think?
09:06Well, you bring some cool stuff.
09:07Yeah.
09:08Different stuff.
09:09This is weird.
09:10Yeah.
09:12These things were out in front of every single McDonald's.
09:14Yeah.
09:15They wanted to bring the kids in, right?
09:16So they started building playgrounds.
09:18This piece was actually called the Big Mac Climber, and it was based on their brand characters
09:23of the 70s and 80s.
09:25When they abandoned those characters in the 90s, the equipment went with it.
09:29It looks like yard art to me.
09:31It needs a few little fixing up here and there.
09:33You know, I may have lost a pickle around Poughkeepsie, but...
09:36Oh, it's a lot of work.
09:38I mean, all this fiberglass on here, this definitely needs to be dealt with.
09:42It's all cracked all the way through the burger.
09:43And then the paint job on this thing.
09:45I mean, see the fades?
09:46Like, that's all custom painted.
09:48There's thousands in that thing restoring it.
09:50I want to know what you're going to do with this.
09:51I want to sell it to you.
09:52I don't want to take it back to Ohio.
09:54Oh, I thought you were going to restore it.
09:56I've had a client for years that's been looking for one of these.
09:59The deal fell through, and I'm stuck with a 10-foot cheeseburger.
10:02The only guy I could think of I could unload this thing on was Rick Dale.
10:07I'm seeing a lot of work.
10:08I mean, what are you looking to sell it for?
10:10Oh, man.
10:11500 bucks.
10:12That'll fill up my tank back to Ohio and fill up my tummy.
10:15There's burgers all around.
10:19Oh, my.
10:20I tell you what.
10:21You take 400?
10:24400, you got a deal.
10:25Okay.
10:26400.
10:28I like it.
10:28All right.
10:29You're the happy owner of Officer Big Mac.
10:32All right.
10:32Promise me, once you get a customer and you restore it, I want to come back and get a picture
10:35with it.
10:35Okay.
10:36Once Rick explained to me all the detail that this thing's going to take, I think it's a fair deal.
10:40And you know, I'm so relieved that I don't have to take Officer Big Mac back to Ohio.
10:44This thing's got some big buns on it, you know?
10:50A customer dropped off an old Honda Super Hawk, but the gas tank was missing.
10:54I've been looking all over town, and though I've learned a thing or two about them, I'm coming up dry.
10:59Now I'm down to my last resort, this psycho guy named Ace, who's supposed to be a real hard ass.
11:04I'm not looking forward to this.
11:06Is Ace available?
11:07I'm looking for Ace.
11:08Yeah.
11:08Ace!
11:09What?
11:10Come here.
11:16Hey.
11:17How you doing?
11:18Ace.
11:19Tyler.
11:19How can I help you, young man?
11:20Nice hair.
11:21Yeah, you like that?
11:22Yeah, damn.
11:22I wish I had that.
11:23I have Ace with Ace Cycle.
11:25Sell parts and do service on motorcycles, all makes and models.
11:28My dad sent me over here, he said we're doing a 65 Honda Super Hawk, I believe is what he
11:33said.
11:34You believe that's what he said, Ace?
11:36He told me it was a 65.
11:37Your dad didn't write this down on a piece of paper for you?
11:40He didn't give me anything.
11:40Most people come in and know exactly what they want.
11:43You gotta give me something to work with here, man.
11:45I'm looking for the gas tank.
11:46To pick up on a 65, you'd have to know the badge, the style of the badge.
11:49Do you know what the style of the badge is?
11:51Because they were different.
11:5264, 65, 66.
11:53I know one thing is that it only had two screws, and the screws were on the front and they
11:59were
11:59on the back.
11:59I mean, instead of, I know we're talking about three screws.
12:02That's okay.
12:03See?
12:03Good.
12:03Now you're narrowing it down for me.
12:05I don't know, he acted like he was frightened or something.
12:07He understood more than he thought he understood, he just wasn't saying it.
12:11I got an old Honda tank in the back I've been kind of holding on to.
12:14You ready to go in the back?
12:15Yeah, I guess.
12:16I'll follow you.
12:16All right.
12:17I really hope the gas tank for the Superhawk is here because if the gas tank's not here,
12:21then dealing with Ace was basically for nothing.
12:24All right, kid, let's get our hands dirty here a minute, all right?
12:26Yeah.
12:26Is this it?
12:27No.
12:28What's that say on the side?
12:29Does that say Honda to you?
12:30No, it says Harley.
12:31Harley.
12:31That's a difference, all right?
12:32So that must not be it.
12:33That's not it.
12:35Let me take a look.
12:39I believe I got it.
12:40I can tell you.
12:42Look here.
12:43Look here.
12:43Yeah.
12:44Two screws.
12:45Is that what you're looking for or do you know what you're looking for?
12:47I know that's what I'm looking for.
12:48That is a genuine 1965 Superhawk gas tank.
12:51Really?
12:52That's it?
12:53That's it.
12:53What is it worth to you?
12:55It's obviously not doing anything good here besides sitting in the junk pile.
12:59This a project, Mike?
13:00And this is standing between you and the project?
13:03Yeah.
13:03Oh, we shouldn't have said that, man.
13:05Never say that.
13:06Don't ever tell a guy like me something like that.
13:10Well, I'll tell you what.
13:12How about we'll call it 250 bucks and when you grow up, get me a six pack and come back
13:19with it.
13:20How about that?
13:21You're not that bad.
13:23You aren't that bad either.
13:25Come on out here and don't trip over things.
13:27After I busted his chops a little bit, I found out what he wanted.
13:30But you know all in all, he's not as corny as he looks.
13:32All right, get the hell out of my shop now.
13:34Jeez.
13:43My dad and I are coming down to the pawn shop to deliver the pedal car that we restored
13:47for the guys here.
13:50I got it.
13:51You got it.
13:52Yeah.
13:53What?
13:53What?
13:54It's just rare that you're actually carrying something and I'm not.
13:58You know you're getting old.
13:59I'm just trying to help you out.
14:01Oh, okay.
14:01Chum wanted this thing a little pimped out, but my dad shot him down.
14:05Bretley and I added some flair in secret and I think Chum's going to love it.
14:10Hey, Chum.
14:11We got the pedal car.
14:13All right.
14:13Sweet.
14:14It's all finished up.
14:15How you been?
14:16I'm good.
14:17Good to see you.
14:17How you been?
14:18What's up, Tyler?
14:19What's up?
14:20How you doing, man?
14:20Good.
14:21All right.
14:22I'm excited to see this thing.
14:23What'd you do to it?
14:24Well, you remember when you dropped it off, you and the old man bought it and wasn't that
14:28good looking?
14:28Yeah.
14:29I mean, to be honest with you, all I remember is that it was really, really bad.
14:34Hydraulics?
14:34No hydraulics.
14:36Come on.
14:37No, no, no.
14:37You know I wanted hydraulics.
14:38I know you wanted it, but I thought that, you know, this would be worth more stock.
14:43All right.
14:43So, okay.
14:44You ready?
14:44Let's do it.
14:45Here we go.
14:46One, two, three.
14:48Sweet.
14:50What do you think?
14:50That thing is cherry.
14:52It looks like a brand new one.
14:54When I dropped it off, it was just a junky old rusty blue car looking thing.
14:58So, as soon as they revealed that car, I couldn't believe how cool it was.
15:02All the rims are good?
15:03Yeah.
15:04You remember how we were missing a hubcap?
15:06Yeah.
15:06We ended up finding another hubcap for it.
15:08And on the front, the grill work is hand painted on there and that silver sort of looked
15:12like chrome.
15:13Oh, wow.
15:13The paint job on it.
15:15You know, this was the stock red.
15:16I did it totally, totally stock.
15:19Red puffs.
15:20Rick did such a good job restoring this, it's going to fly right off the shelf.
15:23I'm probably going to get a raise out of this.
15:26It's not the pimped out rat I was thinking about, but it is pretty tight.
15:29I just didn't feel like that was necessary.
15:32I thought it would take away a little bit from it.
15:33I was afraid if you pimped it, you wouldn't, I don't know.
15:36You just like things original.
15:38Yeah, I do.
15:39That's the problem sometimes.
15:40See?
15:41I'm going to modify something.
15:42Looks good though.
15:43I think the old man and Rick are going to be happy.
15:45All right, go.
15:46There is one more thing though that I want to show you.
15:48What?
15:48What are you talking about?
15:50Well, Bretley and I had an idea, and so I made it happen.
15:54You want to see?
15:55Yeah, let me show you.
15:56I have no idea what Tyler's talking about, but if he and Bretley change something on this,
16:01I'm going to be pissed.
16:03You ready?
16:04I'm ready.
16:05Are you ready?
16:06I guess so.
16:07Let's see ya.
16:08Sweet!
16:09It's finally pimped out, Rick.
16:11These lights are awesome.
16:12This car is so pimped out, it looks like Exhibit did it himself.
16:15What they are is they're LED lights, so I mean they're just powered by a 9-volt battery.
16:19Tyler, when did you put these in?
16:21Just right before.
16:22I mean, the way they're on, it's not going to hurt the paint.
16:24I mean, we can pull them off if nobody likes them.
16:26No, I like them.
16:27I think everyone else is going to like them too.
16:29As long as you like it, I'm good.
16:31All right, sweet.
16:32All right.
16:33Thanks, John.
16:34I guess the boy's stunt could have turned out worse.
16:37It's still an original restoration, and the customer got what he wanted.
16:40But that doesn't make it okay to sneak around changing stuff.
16:44See, he loves it.
16:45We're good.
16:46Yeah.
16:46You don't ever do that again.
16:49Welding is a necessity when you're fabricating anything out of metal.
16:52There are different types of metals, and there's different forms of welding.
16:57What is the most commonly used method when welding stainless steel?
17:01A, TIG welding.
17:03B, MIG welding.
17:05C, stick welding.
17:06The answer is A, TIG welding.
17:26One of the things with stainless steel is it always comes fairly thin.
17:30If you're heating in a large area, you're going to warp the metal.
17:33TIG stands for tungsten inner gas.
17:36And what that does is it allows you to superheat the metal to exact point and allows you to weld
17:42without warping all the rest of the metal.
17:44Very important when welding stainless steel.
17:52We've been working on this 1965 Superhawk for a while.
17:56Tyler did a great job on finding an authentic tank.
17:59And now we're putting all the finishing touches on this thing before the customer gets here.
18:11Oh, I know he's around here somewhere.
18:13I hope he has my bike.
18:14Rick!
18:15I'm here today to pick up my 1965 Honda Superhawk that Rick has restored for me.
18:20Oh, Rick!
18:21Wait, I hear him.
18:23There he is.
18:24Wow, does that sound familiar?
18:27There you go.
18:29Enjoy it, Mark.
18:29Oh, thank you, Kyle.
18:32Wow!
18:37It actually runs.
18:39What do you think?
18:42I'm very speechless, Rick.
18:43It's never looked like that before.
18:46There she is.
18:47Wow, it's pretty.
18:48Check it out.
18:49Yeah.
18:50Wow.
18:50He got the engine taken care of, all painted up.
18:53Pipes, fenders, the right color.
18:56The transmission, it had it.
18:58Is that what it was?
18:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:59I was wondering about those two gears.
19:01They were totally done in there.
19:02This bike went through a lot when I was a teenager.
19:05I never, ever thought it would look new again.
19:07But it does.
19:08One of the things, you were missing the tank, and that was probably the worst thing I was
19:12worried about getting.
19:13We ran around town, and there was a friend of mine, his name's Ace, and he happened to
19:17have one up on his shelf.
19:18So my son went over and got it.
19:20So it was pretty cool to be able to find it.
19:22The pieces on it, all the chrome was a little rusty and stuff like that.
19:25We got, this rubber's all been redone on the side.
19:27You know, the panels.
19:29Oh, really?
19:29Yep, it's all been done.
19:30That's so cool.
19:30But then we chromed these all out.
19:32Chromed everything, re-chromed everything on it.
19:34The emblems, these are all your original emblems.
19:36That's good.
19:37On the side here.
19:37Those are all totally polished out, the original.
19:40You did the frame?
19:42Yep, the frame.
19:43The frame, we took it all apart, we blasted it, and then it's all paint.
19:46It's not powder coat.
19:47It's like it would have been.
19:48So it's all paint.
19:49It really met my expectations.
19:51It exceeded my expectations, because Rick did the fine details of everything about the
19:56bike.
19:56He didn't go overboard.
19:58He did exactly what it should have been.
20:00It's been about 30 years since I rode this bike.
20:03Well, get on.
20:04Ride that bad boy.
20:07Buy yourself better than it ever did.
20:10It's got a great sound.
20:11It does.
20:12All right, here we go.
20:13Have fun.
20:15Wow, I haven't heard that engine in 30 years.
20:17It brought back so many memories my brother and I would ride.
20:20Day after day, sunup to sundown.
20:24Yeah, I love it.
20:34Are you sure this is going to work?
20:35There's a big hole on the side of this.
20:37That's what we do.
20:38You fixed up.
20:40You hear that?
20:41Is that Nana over there?
20:43Yeah.
20:44Where the hell's Bradley?
20:45Nana, what are you doing?
20:47Yeah, I'm stuck up here.
20:49What the?
20:51What are you doing?
20:55Yeah, is he stuck up there?
20:56What's going on?
20:57Dude, I had to come try it out and I've been stuck up here.
21:00Help me out.
21:02Huh?
21:02We gotta go work, dude.
21:03Come on.
21:04You got yourself into it.
21:05You can get yourself out.
21:06You'll figure it out.
21:06Do the same, just different.
21:08Go backwards.
21:11You guys suck.
21:12That's funny.
21:13Dude, I hope this dog's a rescue dog.
21:15Mom!
21:16Anybody!
21:18Come on!
21:19Come on!
