00:00but the olympics were hot yesterday and by the way the storyline show in the olympics were
00:03absolutely fantastic so many new superstars that were introduced to us and also 12 gold medals the
00:09most ever in the winter olympics and also understand this joe we opened up talking about
00:13the winter olympics eight and a half was that gold medal total and i think it surged up around
00:1711 and a half or 12 and a half by the time it was over and the u.s plates
00:2112 of those bad boys
00:23a lot of superstars going all the way around and again capped off by the team events hockey and
00:28women's hockey men's both gold medals great job by the americans at the olympics this year
00:33huge job i mean honestly donnie and and don't forget we talked about it a couple of times over
00:39the olympics where there were a few events where there might have been some shady judging going on
00:46where yes one or two of the athletes should have won gold but had to settle for the silver but
00:53either which way 33 total medals best showing the u.s has had in a very long time in the
00:59winter
00:59olympics and by the way a lot of these networks joe look at the olympics like oh i don't know
01:03if it's
01:04a good smart investment to make it here but how about this nbc's big bet on the olympics looks smart
01:09as milan's audience up 94 from beijing i don't know if it was the storylines that come out or the
01:15either the pros were there but i just felt like even though it was halfway across the world where you
01:19weren't getting the action in prime time i thought the coverage was great and also the storylines and
01:24it doesn't help in the united states where the teams and the individuals are doing well also
01:29huge donnie i i thought the placement of it i thought the times they even replayed everything
01:35uh and the ability for you to you know they really clamped down on the whole clips and things
01:41that you could see on social media they controlled everything and it was it was done part like you
01:47didn't know anything ahead of time they controlled everything very well there which i think added to
01:53the hype uh in a lot of it and i thought to rico was phenomenal they were really good and
01:59also give
02:00a shout out to italy as well being the home country hosting you want to put on a good performance
02:05they
02:05dropped 30 medals in the olympics a record for italy great that look the americans were great the
02:11hometown team was great norway was off the charts you got exactly what you wanted but when the home team
02:15also participates and also is at the top of the standings great stuff it was huge donnie i mean
02:22it really really was and by the way i don't know how snoop dogg ended up being the face of
02:26the winter
02:27olympics but whatever i'm all for it man i thought it was fantastic and having that closing ceremony by
02:33the way in that coliseum there also outstanding stuff really cool and now the handoff takes place
02:40joe the olympic flag is officially handed over to france the french alps will host the winter olympics
02:45in 2030 joe oh and donnie it'll be here before we know it by the way it really will
02:56and also six olympic golds by one person at the winter games here norway that dude is the nordic
03:04king clabo six golds man amazing huge yeah huge individual performances but he was a big reason
03:12why they were the favorite too i'll tell you a big reason why we did watch some of these ratings
03:17you
03:17couldn't get away from the tv must watch yesterday let's talk about it more we're heading back to the
03:22olympics right here where were you yesterday in the morning were you watching the miracle on ice part
03:29two well not necessarily where the pros were the russians back in 1908 a couple college kids you
03:34got some high priced talent on team usa and also on team canada but many people joe were upset how
03:39could you do this to us it's 8 a.m on the east coast it's 5 p.m on the
03:43west coast what was a weekend
03:44here and by the time everybody woke up got their cup of coffee and even if they missed the start
03:49you know they were tuned in it was spectacular hockey we saw baldy with a free goal to start that
03:55game splitting two defenders and putting the puck past the goalie to make it one to nothing here
04:00and then you said all right bennington let's see if you can stand on your head the rest of the
04:04way
04:04and he did in regulation and connor hellebuck was absolutely fantastic and it took an absolute rocket
04:10from kale mccarr to make it 1-1 before we got to overtime if you love hockey you don't have
04:15to love
04:16nhl hockey if you just love high stakes environments where both countries absolutely want to win and are
04:23spilling blood out there you got it yesterday in the two to one victory by team usa joe yeah it
04:30was
04:30unbelievable and and yes you know like like i had said donnie it felt like grand larceny there at one
04:37point because i still to this moment have no idea how it is that team canada didn't score more than
04:45one goal i really there were a couple of opportunities there but on the flip side good point about
04:51bennington he had he they weren't as often obviously he didn't have to face 42 shots like
04:57helibuck did but uh he had to face some shots and he made some really big saves in that third
05:04period
05:04in order to make sure they protected that lee uh protected the tie and eventually got it to overtime
05:10but uh just on but you could not have asked for a better ending to the olympics and a better
05:16effort
05:17from well you know donnie these aren't amateurs these are all multi-million dollar nhl players
05:23who weren't getting a check the only thing they were playing for was pride of their country and
05:29that kind of effort i'm sign me up for that any day that was amazing stuff and the rivalry is
05:36fantastic
05:37right because like you had the build up in the four nations and before that like and every time
05:41these two teams meet in the olympics when the pros are out there it just ramps everything up like
05:46you're getting the best of the best on the ice at the same time that's exactly what you got all
05:50the
05:51way through and then again it ends in overtime at two to one which is the only way it was
05:54supposed to
05:55now you might have said oh some controversy and why go to three on three which sometimes you see the
06:00point of that but also you see this as well joe well wait they just played 60 minutes to a
06:04tie we're
06:04going to play another 60 minutes here and play all night and who gets tired first scores you knew
06:09once you got to overtime joe in three on three i don't care how good the goalies are you get
06:13the
06:14best of the best with open ice and it didn't take more than two minutes before the united states put
06:18one past bennington and won that game two to one you got everything that you wanted to watch including
06:23joe a u.s olympic penalty kill throughout the olympics that's was like yeah we'll go a man dad you're
06:28not
06:28scoring how about going two men down and how many times do you watch nhl hockey oh two minute
06:32advantage you got 15 seconds before then you have to kill that off you almost did it for a full
06:37two
06:37minutes it felt like and they still held it off you had so many peaks and valleys double minor here
06:42that team usa was going to get late in the third period which turned into a power play eventually
06:46for canada you had everything you wanted to watch depending on what side you wanted here and exactly
06:51what you got in overtime victory i love to watch it the theater was awesome on a sunday morning
06:55i i again we don't get them very often but you know it's one of those that those stories that
07:03anybody who witnessed it in six months a year 10 years you tell your kids you tell your grandkids
07:11you know it always starts with i remember when right i remember exactly what i was doing when
07:17this happened and in sports you know have there been a ton of olympic moments that we can go to
07:24yeah
07:24the 1980 the miracle on ice was unbelievable but you know that yesterday felt like you know bars
07:32opening at 5 a.m in california uh you know everywhere around the country it did not get it just
07:38felt
07:39like that was a stanley cup game seven right but maybe even more so because those guys weren't playing
07:46for like that you know they're uh a cup here for the nhl they were playing strictly for their country
07:53and it just the whole thing ratcheted up and it felt unbelievable you could feel it through the tv
08:00and by the way also great call um you know the guys that were actually calling the uh calling the
08:06game
08:06too oh my goodness fantastic stuff no they were it was good like i thought the coverage on both sides
08:12too and even like i know you had like i think the cbc had one side the u.s had
08:15one side but when
08:16gretzky was early on the telecast on the american side of things just breaking down how much it meant for
08:21each country and what you were going to watch and as i said to open the show joe so many
08:24times like
08:25hey i can't wait to watch these two teams being the gold medal and something gets ruined or players
08:29get injured too much or you can't watch it at that point they gave you everything you need also it
08:33wasn't easy getting there specifically for the canadian side what back to back three straight
08:37overtime games was it that they had just to even get to the gold medal game you had two overtime
08:41then obviously the overtime in the gold medal effort but it was connor hellebuck standing on his head
08:45for usa and you knew it was going to happen joe americans get the first goal here to go one
08:50to
08:50nothing and even if i think could chuck after the game it's like maybe that was a bad thing because
08:54that ice tilted the rest of the way we're like okay we're up one to nothing let's see if we
08:57can just
08:58hold them off which you know usually gets you in trouble macarr scores late in the second period
09:01and even in the third period canada was the better team once it opened up there tv usa puts the
09:06dagger
09:06in there to win that two to one how about this story brock nelson brings home the fourth men's
09:12hockey gold medal to his family joe his grandfather great uncle part of the 1960 group that won the
09:18gold and his uncle played on the 80 winning team now he plays on the team that won in 2026
09:23four gold
09:24medals in one family it's not like you win a gold medal every year joe that's incredible i thought
09:29just the story is donnie i mean it could not have culminated any better and nbc is going to be
09:35the big
09:36winner because i'm telling you right now that is going to be the big the most watched uh single event
09:41of
09:42any olympics in a very very long time and the fact that mike garuzioni was actually there uh with the
09:50team there i i mean unbelievable and look at all the brothers on the team right i i mean the
09:56hughes
09:56brothers and you had the kachuk bro you know this was the these guys are all part of a generation
10:01that grew up watching and wanting to be a part of this so it's good to see that you know
10:06maybe not
10:07amateurs but you know what the pros still care and still have a little uh a little pride in them
10:13you know i think they were talking to hughes after the game and he's basically explaining like you
10:17know how the brotherhood of like american hockey same thing with canada can you imagine like being
10:20at the olympics and it's like all right uh we're gonna have some uh speakers come in just to get
10:24you a little fired up meet the guys like a ruzioni comes in probably the day before the game he
10:28goes
10:28man tomorrow 40th plus anniversary here of when we did the miracle on ice and we knocked off the soviets
10:33here go out and they like you just get filled up with so much pride like we can't let these
10:37other
10:37generations down at this point and they certainly did and by the way jack hughes you want to talk
10:42about like as we say joe like they don't really get paid for the olympics i think it's like 37
10:45000
10:45if you actually win the gold medal which is don't change these guys playing for hundreds of millions
10:49of dollars in the nhl but you want to go down and like be able to tell your kids something
10:53and
10:53just pictures that will be in books and across social media jack hughes with the american flag around
10:59his neck here the busted up teeth and the big smile with his fist in the air
11:03you talk about like iconic images over the past that's one you are going to see now where you
11:07saw like hey ruzioni raising his gloves up and this is a miracle and happen yes it did not the
11:12case
11:13anymore at this point jack hughes also now going to be put on that pedestal where 40 years later when
11:17you're all telling your kids like hey i was around for that one that hughes kid he was amazing
11:21and it's amazing that they you know these guys are all teammates like you know hughes and company
11:28there the kachuk they're all you know they there's a lot of guys that are on tv that are on
11:34teams that
11:35you know their teammates were across the ice from them there so really cool stuff yeah no it was great
11:42stuff all the way through and also understand this when joe talks about big business in the nhl
11:46how about this tweet from front office sports show 226 and a half million dollars in combined nhl salary
11:52that's for the american team most expensive roster at the olympics revenge on canada for the four
11:57nations first olympic gold medal since the miracle on ice the u.s men's hockey team is absolutely big
12:03business here sydney crosby got his third olympic medal as well certainly not happy and joe the one
12:09thing that i do get a kick out if you're at the olympics is you understand that when you win
12:13the gold
12:13medal you can't wait to get that medal around your neck you can't wait to sit and hug all the
12:17boys here
12:18look up there and you see the american flag and you get to sing your national anthem but you sort
12:22of
12:22did feel for the canadian team which devastated their entire nation getting a silver medal and then
12:28what i couldn't get to stop laughing at was then they hand them those little like stuffed bears and
12:32they're like you've got to be kidding me joe unbelievable donnie just unbelievable nice stuffed animal
12:39though they got that was good nice consolation price they're gonna be up on bird probably selling
12:44for a pretty penny really quick here we'll be right back with grid network on the early line
12:50to sports grid network here it doesn't matter if there's a major so storm here on the east coast
12:54which a lot of us are here and joe ranieri's down in south florida enjoying himself and laughing at us
12:58but tom vecchio he's right in the middle of it tom let's get right to the fun here and talk
13:02about
13:03what we saw yesterday and what i mean by yesterday is we were doing a live major league baseball show
13:08as
13:08tom and i do every single week 10 a.m to 12 p.m here he said you know what
13:12let's look ahead and have fun
13:13we said wait a second now 8 10 start for the olympic game the gold medal between the team united
13:19states
13:19and also team canada how can we do it joe but joe but by the way as i explained it
13:24to you we went on
13:25the air live with one eye going this way one eye giving you major league baseball time it was phenomenal
13:31stuff yesterday and it worked out perfectly for us what's good man it really did um you know this is
13:37a
13:37a long time coming i remember watching the 2010 uh gold medal loss to team canada at the vancouver
13:45olympics uh i was a freshman in college at that time so 16 years later i've been waiting for team
13:50usa to win the gold they finally came through it was an awesome game was awesome run up to the
13:55gold
13:55medal game through you know the steps that they had to take the overtime win versus sweden the trouncing
14:00of slovakia and obviously taking down their biggest rival so unbelievable game uh nhl starts back up on
14:06wednesday the trade deadline is next week and it is crunch time for these nhl teams
14:12it really is time i mean it celebration aside and i i love nate mckinnon's comment about how
14:18you know you tell me who the best team was well the best team nate is the one wearing the
14:24gold medal
14:24it's really that simple uh but what happens now moving forward here i i first of all how do you
14:31even
14:31bet the nhl with teams like minnesota had half their team here and there are some teams that had
14:37so many guys so what what's the game plan here of betting the nhl once it gets back with these
14:43guys
14:43uh you know that's something i've been trying to you know wrap my brain around for the last especially
14:47the last week like being ready for this the second half of the season for nhl you know i would
14:52say it's
14:52easy just to scale things back go with you know half units i think that's a general thing but
14:56it's a team by team um you know handicapping really you know when we look at a team like new
15:02jersey it's not just like oh they had jack hughes there it's like well they also had uh uh nico
15:07hirscher was on team switzerland so he wasn't there like they go down the list jonas siegenthaler
15:11was wasn't there he was on switzerland as well so you'd go team by team like listen colorado and
15:16vegas teams that are often very heavy favorites at home had five or six players a third of their team
15:22playing in these games they're playing multiple games so i wouldn't be looking to lay heavy money
15:26i'd be looking for money lines that are you know minus 125 or closer even money or just taking plus
15:31money because we don't know what we're going to get then we're also going to see a depletion of
15:35talent from some rosters because the trade deadline is coming up we know that the rangers traded our
15:40timmy panarin to the kings there's obviously talks that they're going to trade vinny trochek who's on
15:44team usa to someone else so their talent pool is going to get even weaker so it's a combination of
15:49teams that have players that are uh you know under rested and played more and also the talent's
15:54going to be moving away from teams yeah going to be a tough one starting up and again it's not
15:59just
15:59like hey all-star break take three or four days off they were all for weeks at this point now
16:02understand this they're professional athletes and you trust that they stayed in shape but it's not
16:05game shape where you come back and also some of the biggest superstars in the sport when you're
16:10talking about playing team canada and team usa those guys gave it they're all winners yes they're
16:15going to want to celebrate and then you have sort of a lull when you get back to your own
16:18nhl team and then the guys from team canada here you're going to have a lull because that was such
16:22a big letdown there it's like okay now i gotta go back to my team and also understand this some
16:26teams are jockeying for playoff positioning going to make a run at a make a run at a stanley cup
16:30and
16:30other teams like i'm going to go back to this bad team and i got to carry them here i
16:33just lost in
16:34the olympics or i won in the olympics that certainly could play into it but a lot of fun to
16:37be had at the
16:38olympics here u.s wins the gold medal canada comes in with that silver medal here
