00:00Winter Olympics winding down, only four days left of competition, but here on the early line on the Sports Grid
00:06Network,
00:06we'd like to keep you updated on a day-to-day basis what that medal count is, nation by nation.
00:11Take a look at it from yesterday, Joe.
00:13Norway, 15 gold, 8 silver, 10 bronze.
00:16They leave the total medal count with 33, followed by Italy at 26, Team USA 24, Japan 22, and Germany
00:2321.
00:23The leader in the silver category, it's the United States of America here.
00:27A few days left, a lot of competition still up in the air.
00:31There is, Donnie, and if you were dabbling in any of the prediction markets here and total medals and total
00:39gold medals,
00:40obviously Norway, Donnie, was the favorite to get both the most gold and the most overall,
00:46and they're living up to that hype as the chalk, and we had said, wow, why are they such a
00:51big favorite?
00:52Well, I think they're showing us why they're such a big favorite to rack up all these golds.
00:57Let's get to the championship rounds and the gold medal rounds.
01:00How do you do that, Joe?
01:01You got to win some of these knockout games, get to the quarterfinals, the semifinals, and continue to advance.
01:06Cuse scored a goal yesterday.
01:07It was in overtime.
01:08Let's hear from him.
01:10Hell of a game out there.
01:12You took down the game winner.
01:13I mean, what did that feel like?
01:15Yeah, just a relief.
01:17Just really enjoying being here with this group and the guys and trying to extend it as long as I
01:21can.
01:22Right on.
01:23And then USA flags all over the place.
01:25You could hear the chants.
01:26What's that atmosphere like?
01:27Yeah, it's special.
01:27I mean, you know, I love the U.S.
01:31and it's the greatest country in the world, so happy to represent it here with these guys,
01:36and, you know, it's really special.
01:39Nice.
01:39Last one.
01:40What are you taking from tonight into Slovakia?
01:43I don't know.
01:44I think you just want to move on and be ready to go and get your feet up the next
01:4824 hours
01:48and then be ready to go.
01:49Right on, man.
01:50Can you tell us what you saw in that final play?
01:53I mean, I just tried to create some space for myself and, you know,
01:57I was able to get it to my forehand and get a shot off.
02:01When you, the definition of, like, a skilled athlete, like, in hockey, like,
02:05understand, like, there's other sports, like football, you have great skills,
02:08and the NBA, great skills, great athletes.
02:10But to be able to do this on ice while you're skating, just watch that overtime goal
02:14and figure out yourself, like, ooh, I think I could have been an NHL player when I was a kid.
02:17No, you can't, yo.
02:18My goodness, man.
02:20Yeah, and Donnie, I mean, the way he did it.
02:22And again, you know, these guys, I noticed it in the Canada overtime game as well.
02:28I mean, these guys were sucking wind in overtime, make a sweat.
02:32Like, yeah, no.
02:33These guys were, they were huffing and puffing, and they tried to get him off that ice.
02:38And he just, he refused to get off the ice.
02:41And a couple of minutes later, or a couple of seconds later, actually,
02:45is when he ends up scoring it.
02:47How are you skating to the left, and then you fire that shot all the way to the right
02:52was just unbelievable.
02:53It was the thing of beauty, and it's why Team USA is moving on.
02:57How about this sport breakdown from 1994 to 2022 at the Winter Olympics?
03:02The percentages of gold medals won per country here.
03:04Look at the luge in the bobsled.
03:05Germany, 72% of the gold medals since 1994 in the luge went to Germany.
03:10In the bobsled, 56% went to Germany.
03:13Domination up top there.
03:15You think, Narnia?
03:17I don't know what's going on with the bobsled there,
03:20but apparently they've got their finger on the pulse on how to go ahead
03:23and just take down gold medals.
03:24That's kind of crazy, but, hey, listen, you come to expect it in the Winter Olympics.
03:30I didn't expect Italy to rack up as many medals as they've racked up here either this year.
03:36And by the way, I thought, like, AI runs rampant across, like, social media.
03:40You don't know what to believe or not believe.
03:42And it's like, oh, look, there's a dog running across the finish line
03:44with a couple cross-country scares.
03:46Like, of course, that's AI.
03:47No, it isn't.
03:47And it wasn't just any dogs.
03:49It's like a wolf dog out there that got loose and just decided to finish the race
03:52along with the people, a nice little spot here for the Winter Olympics, Joe.
03:56Yeah, dog gets out.
03:57It's like, oh, you want to race?
03:58All right, we can race.
03:59Yeah, it was actually pretty cool.
04:01The video and the pictures of it are actually pretty funny there as it's cruising
04:05because it's certainly not something you expected to see, Donnie,
04:09if you were watching that.
04:10You're like, wait a minute.
04:10What is that?
04:11Who is that?
04:12What country was the dog in, Donnie?
04:15I'm sure.
04:16A wolf dog got loose out there.
04:18Somebody just brought their dog to the competition when they have a little bit of fun.
04:20That's what it turns out to be.
04:22How about this news to note here?
04:23Michaela Schifrin, which went a long time with winning gold medals,
04:26is now the youngest and also oldest American ever to win a gold in the slalom.
04:3118 when she was young, 30 when I guess 30 is old now, apparently.
04:37Well, in that, apparently it is there.
04:39But talk about full circle, right?
04:41I mean, my goodness.
04:43Way to end it there.
04:44If this is her last one, right, well, you go out on top,
04:47and that's the way that you do it.
04:50What happened to Team USA here in snowboarding?
04:52Japan wins most golds four and total medals nine,
04:54all in big air, half pipe, and slope style.
04:57No U.S. snowboarder golds for the first time since Nagano in 1998.
05:01Isn't this, didn't we create this sport?
05:03Why aren't we dominating this, Joe?
05:06Again, some shady, and I mean shady judging going on here.
05:11Oh, Winter Olympics hockey has been really good.
05:13Did you watch yesterday four games?
05:15Three of those games at the Olympics went to overtime with countries hanging on the edge here.
05:21I'm Donnie Wright, along with Joe Renier.
05:23Let's bring in Troy Perlowitz.
05:24We got to talk some hockey, Troy.
05:26It's been sensational just the way we anticipated.
05:30I can't even, what a day for hockey, right?
05:33It was peak hockey moment.
05:34I think we'll always look back at February 18th and remember where we were when we were watching those four
05:38games.
05:39Three of them, like you said, went to overtime.
05:42Just an incredible day for the sport.
05:44It was so much fun, Troy.
05:45And the funny part about it is, depending on like what nation you live in, right?
05:48Like Team USA, it's like, we want to play Canada in the final.
05:51Canada's like, we want to play U.S. in the final.
05:53Then Canada's down.
05:54You're like, oh, good.
05:55I hope they lose, but you don't want them to lose.
05:57And then Canada's like, oh, I hope the U.S. loses, but we don't want them to lose.
05:59But you saw it yesterday.
06:01Just as watching this game in the middle of the afternoon, Team USA playing great defense.
06:04Telebook was fantastic in goal, and then it happened with about a minute to go.
06:08Sweden scores like, oh, no, Troy.
06:10They're going to get them in overtime here.
06:12But my goodness, Quinn Hughes, a sensational 3-on-3 overtime goal, pushes Team USA through against Sweden.
06:19What did you think about that game, Troy?
06:22So, Donnie, let me tell you a quick story first.
06:24I went on my honeymoon last summer.
06:28I went to Greece on my honeymoon.
06:30Yep.
06:31For anyone who knows Greece, very dry country.
06:33There's not a lot of water, let alone ice.
06:36But I stepped into a cab in Greece and, you know, get to talking to the cab driver, ask what
06:41you do for a living, tell him that I work at the NHL.
06:43And he's like, oh, you know, the Kachuk brothers, Canada and the U.S., they're going to, you know, from
06:48the Four Nations, they know the rivalry.
06:51I think they wanted it too.
06:53And, yes, it's exactly what went through my mind.
06:55I was watching those games yesterday is, you know, we've been talking about this rivalry for the last year since
07:00the Four Nations.
07:01And they met in the championship game in Canada, you know, won in overtime on a Conor McDavid goal.
07:06We've been talking about this rivalry for a year.
07:09It would be so disappointing not to see them meet again in the gold medal game.
07:14But there's always a part of me that, you know, the cream's going to rise to the top.
07:18These are two, clearly the two best teams in the tournament.
07:20It's not that close.
07:22I'm not saying that either of them can't lose in the semifinals, but it's the two superpowers in the world.
07:29I think everybody wants to see them face off in the outside of Finland and Slovakia today.
07:35I think everybody wants to see Canada and the United States face off against each other on that Sunday morning
07:41gold medal game.
07:43All right.
07:43So be honest now.
07:45Have Maple Leafs forgiven Mitch Marner now after yesterday?
07:49Did he rewrite his narrative and his legacy here yesterday?
07:55You know, big game Mitch.
07:57He scored a huge game for Canada against Sweden in the Four Nations tournament.
08:01And he won in overtime.
08:03He's scored a couple of huge goals for the Maple Leafs before going to the Golden Knights this offseason.
08:10Yeah, I think it's time to forgive Mitch Marner.
08:13I think he's a really big game player.
08:15I think the moniker on him has been totally unearned.
08:18He's a really he's a really strong player.
08:20He's playing, you know, his linemate Sidney Crosby went out with an injury, which I'm sure we'll talk about.
08:25But I think Mitch Marner is a huge player for the Canadians coming down the stretch here as we get
08:31into the semifinals,
08:32because he plays with Mark Stone, who's his teammate with the Vegas Golden Knights and plays a really crucial role.
08:38He could he could be on that second power play unit and be a secondary scorer, especially if Canada loads
08:44up with Nathan McKinnon, Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini on that first line.
08:49And by the way, Troy, too, like these kids growing up here always want to put on that jersey in
08:54the Maple Leaf there for Canada and Team USA, the USA across the stripes.
08:57It wasn't even fluke goals like they were sensational overtime goals in each respect there.
09:03Breakaway top shelf here.
09:04Another one ripped off the post into the back of that.
09:06They were so much fun to watch, which then leads us to even more hockey.
09:10The men take a day off here, at least as we take a look at Finland, Canada and Slovakia in
09:14the United States on Friday.
09:15Let's start Finland and Canada.
09:16Troy heavy favorite, rightfully so, for Canada.
09:19Sidney Crosby also diagnosed with an injury.
09:21Not sure when he's going to appear.
09:23Talk about Sidney Crosby's injury and also Finland and Canada for you.
09:27Yeah, so here's the thing with Crosby's injury.
09:30If he doesn't play, I know a lot of fans are going to want Canada to.
09:34So Canada has loaded up before with this top line of Celebrini, McDavid and McKinnon, who, by the way, are
09:41one, two and four in points in the NHL this season.
09:45I don't think they could do that without Sidney Crosby being there in the lineup.
09:49It just it creates too much of a hole in their third line center position.
09:54If they do that, I think they probably want to keep a little bit balanced.
09:57And obviously, if they're if the situation arises, they're down by a goal late in the game.
10:02I think you could always press that nuclear button option and get those three players on the ice.
10:07But without Crosby, you're going to ask either Bo Horvat or Joe, your boy, Sam Bennett could come off the
10:14off the starting and fill in there, too.
10:16So I think, look, they're going to be fine in terms of like it's the talent level getting through the
10:21neutral zone might be a little bit tougher without a puck possessor like Crosby himself.
10:25But kind of should be fine that you're going to be heavy favorite that you just showed the graphic.
10:30They're huge favorites against Finland and they should be there.
10:33They have so much more talent than the Finns do.
10:36Finland, given respect, they won the gold medal and the last time their Olympics played.
10:42But they weren't NHL players in that tournament.
10:44There are NHL players now.
10:45I expect Canada, I think, you know, when you have a tough situation like they were, they were losing the
10:51entire game against Czechia and most of that third period as well.
10:56And you kind of galvanize yourselves and have a huge emotional win like that.
11:00It could always galvanize you and group you together.
11:03And I think Canada comes back with their best effort against against Finland because they're hungry for a game against
11:08the United States just as much as we are.
11:12Looks like Team USA going to have to bring the same defensive mindset here with Slovakia scoring how many goals
11:19against Germany.
11:20I thought they were a little conservative there in that third period.
11:24What do they got to do here?
11:26I think that's kind of the play style.
11:28You know, that's that's if there's one team that could win a one nothing game in this tournament, it's definitely
11:33the United States.
11:34They have a strong goaltender in Connor Hellebach that you mentioned.
11:38You mentioned Quinn Hughes, but Jake Sanderson, Zach Wawenski.
11:41These are elite defensemen in the NHL.
11:44They're great players.
11:45I think they're built to win low scoring games and they could do that.
11:49They're going to have to do that against the Canadians if that's the matchup in the gold medal game.
11:53So might as well start it now.
11:55Troy, we take a look today.
11:57We do have an appetizer on deck.
11:58Women's ice hockey gold medal game.
12:00Team USA taking on Team Canada.
12:021-10 start.
12:03The U.S. heavily favored.
12:05The U.S. Team USA knockoff Canada today.
12:07Or do we see an upset at the Olympics?
12:11I like the Americans here.
12:12I mean, they played a couple of days ago and America won that game 5-0.
12:17Canada was missing one of their best players in Poulon, who's a really elite player in the PWHL.
12:24But I think the Americans, they haven't given up a goal in six games.
12:28I think they take it on and win the gold.
12:30Troy Berlow is talking hockey with us on the early line.
12:33And that's a gold medal.
12:34Thanks, Troy.
12:35We'll be back straight up this week.
12:36It's a Thursday right now.
12:37It's the primetime slot in the morning, as we like to call it.
12:40Why?
12:40Because the fun is just about to begin.
12:42It's Donnie Wright's out.
12:43It's Joe Aneri.
12:43And here we go.
12:44It's Cam Stewart live.
12:47Even if we're going to call him Troy Perlowitz, it doesn't matter.
12:50That's Cam Stewart.
12:51That's who I'm going with here.
12:52Let's go, Cam.
12:54Hey, Donnie.
12:54What's happening, Joe?
12:55Always a pleasure seeing you guys.
12:56And yeah, what do you got?
12:57Olympic hockey fever?
12:58All these teams, three out of the four going to overtime, going to stress out your fan
13:02bases.
13:02That's for sure.
13:03Canada overtime.
13:04And then Finland comes back.
13:06And even the USA, hella buck with a late goal.
13:08And they beat Sweden in overtime.
13:09The favorite's getting it done.
13:10But if you're betting these puck lines, guys, you're making a hell of a lot of money with
13:14these underdogs.
13:15But we have ladies hockey today.
13:16As we mentioned, guys, at the start a couple weeks ago, we already have tickets on the United
13:21States.
13:21And as prime minister, I have to be fair in my negotiations with NAFTA, with Mexico, Canada,
13:27and the United States.
13:28I would take the United States women, guys, laying a puck and a half against Canada right
13:33now.
13:33They're just simply better.
13:34Watching all of their games, they're just faster.
13:37They're unreal.
13:38Like that game against Sweden, don't let the final score fool you.
13:40If it wasn't for Sweden's goalie, who they shouldn't have pulled, the goalie was standing
13:43on her head.
13:44It could have been like 12 to nothing.
13:47Canada had a little bit of problems with Switzerland.
13:48They ran into a hot goalie.
13:50So guys, that total is kind of interesting because I think America might win like, you
13:54know, five to one, five to two, but they don't give up goals.
13:57You've seen how good this American defense and goaltending is.
14:00They're absolutely dominating teams right now.
14:02So I don't know if it's a parlay piece, but team USA women, I think we'll get it done
14:06and probably win by at least two goals against Canada.
14:08I have a lean to the over, but it's pretty tough because the goaltending on both sides is
14:12pretty good.
14:14Could be an appetizer to what we get on Sunday morning.
14:17You know, Cam, we're not going to talk to you again before Sunday, but Finland, Canada
14:20tomorrow, tomorrow morning, and then Slovakia, USA.
14:23Do we get the cup final that we want to see in the Olympics here?
14:26We do.
14:27Slovakia has been amazing guys, but I think the USA takes care of business.
14:30That line is way out of whack and Finland will give Canada problems, but that's what
14:34the networks wants.
14:35That's what we want.
14:36Hockey fans want Canada versus USA on Sunday.
14:39A lot of fun.
14:39If you want to do a super parlay, USA women, Canada men, USA men, that one's about a buck
14:4535, a buck 40.
14:46You're going to have to lay some juice, but these puck lines are nuts.
14:49Cash it in with Cam Stewart.
14:50Thanks for rising to grind this week on a Thursday, Tim.
14:53We'll talk to you next week here for Joe and Don.
14:55We're going to close it down and style next.
