01:01Hey there, it's us again. This is my brother Peter, mom and dad, and I'm Dasha.
01:05Today, we're going to be showing our friends, Andrew and Lisa, the basics of the Internet, and we thought you
01:10might want to come along.
01:11It'll be cool.
01:12Now, here's a little background. When we installed Internet access on our computer, I got the whole family involved.
01:18It's true. Everybody had their own tasks to do.
01:20It was a lot of work, but it was really worth it.
01:22Now that I've gotten on the Internet, I'd rather be on my computer than doing just about anything.
01:27It's really cool.
01:29The Internet gave us a whole world of exciting new possibilities.
01:32So I guess this is a story of how it changed our lives.
01:36Maybe it will yours, too, with the Kids Guide to the Internet.
01:46As Rich told you, we installed the Internet on our computer just a short time ago, and I haven't been
01:52able to get the kids off it ever since.
01:53Not only do they play the typical computer games that all the kids enjoy, but their curiosity for learning has
01:59skyrocketed.
02:00Peter is constantly quoting sports statistics, and he can tell you the best surfing spots around the globe.
02:05Not to mention the improvement in Peter's grades, and Dasha's, too.
02:10Having the Internet in our home has had a great impact on our lives.
02:13Rich keeps up with the stock market and our investments, and I'm able to pay the bills in half the
02:18time it used to take me.
02:19And the kids are improving in their grades and communication skills.
02:22Which makes me happy, as I would sure like them to go to college someday.
02:26Don't worry, though. It's still cool.
02:28The program is by kids for kids, and it's not just for boys, either.
02:32You'll learn how the net can entertain you and take you to far-off locations and meet new people.
02:37And at the end of the tape, I'll be back to tell you how to safeguard your computer so that
02:41you can reduce your concerns about the kinds of websites your children can visit.
02:45You never can be too careful.
02:47And to help out if requested, though I doubt she'll be asked.
02:51So let's get underway.
02:53Yeah.
02:54Take a spin, now you're in with the techno set.
02:56You're going surfing on the Internet.
03:02So, what's everyone up to today?
03:04Well, Linda Emerson called, and she asked if Dasha and Peter could help Andrew and Lisa learn about the Internet.
03:09She's trying to get Bud to get the Internet at home.
03:10Okay, now don't forget to keep it simple for your pals, you two.
03:14You guys have learned an awful lot, even though you've only been online a couple of weeks.
03:17That's the great part, Dad.
03:19It's so easy to learn and so much fun to play on.
03:22Yeah, Dad.
03:23Peter doesn't even have to help me anymore.
03:24I did my report on the Mississippi River all by myself.
03:27Hey, you know how to spell Mississippi with one I?
03:29M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-I.
03:32You know, I've been able to read some of my favorite cooking magazines online.
03:36I've even gotten some great gardening tips, too.
03:38No wonder you guys are always so busy on the computer.
03:41You're going surfing on the Internet.
03:44Come on in.
03:46Hi, guys.
03:47Dad's just leaving, and Mom said we can have the computer all to ourselves.
03:50Hey, Andrew, what's up?
03:53Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Jameson.
03:55My mom wanted me to ask you guys to call her.
03:57She wants you to tell her more about the Internet and why you like it.
04:00Yeah, and you've got to tell her that we really need it for homework.
04:04But don't tell her about the games and stuff.
04:06Even though we know that's what you really want it for.
04:09I'll tell you what.
04:10I'll call her.
04:11Now, you make sure Dasha and Peter show you how they've done some of their school reports
04:14and not all that Cybernet stuff, okay?
04:17See you later, kids.
04:18I'll be home early.
04:18Bye.
04:19Bye.
04:20Take a spin, now you're in with the techno set.
04:23You're going surfing on the Internet.
04:27Okay, guys.
04:28The first thing that you need to know is that the Internet is amazing,
04:31and it's changing every day.
04:32Once you've learned how to get online yourselves,
04:34you'll start seeing webpages everywhere.
04:37TV shows have them, schools, Disney World, even the White House.
04:40What's a webpage?
04:41Something ducks walk on?
04:43Ha ha, very funny.
04:45No, it's the name of the different sites you can look up on the Internet.
04:48Hold on, sis.
04:49Let's start at the beginning like Dad did with us,
04:51so Andrew and Lisa will be able to persuade their parents about the Internet
04:55with some important facts.
04:57Good idea, Peter, but where do we start?
04:59Let's start with the basics first.
05:00There are three important services you can access on the Internet.
05:04Surfing the World Wide Web.
05:06Surfing?
05:06That sounds pretty cool already.
05:08Andrew, don't interrupt.
05:10Go on, Peter.
05:10Then there are news groups to share information with people,
05:13and then there's e-mail.
05:15E-mail?
05:15I heard that's really neat.
05:17My cousin has a pen pal in Sweden,
05:19and they write back and forth,
05:20and it transmits right away and doesn't cost anything.
05:22Yeah, you can even talk with people all over the world on chat lines.
05:26Don't they have chess games and stuff like that, too?
05:29Yup, they got more stuff than you can imagine.
05:32So, where should we start?
05:38Let's start with web pages.
05:40So, first, you need to know that everything on the Internet has an address,
05:43and all web addresses start with HTTP colon double backslash.
05:48Then, to access the World Wide Web, you type in www.
05:57And the next thing you'll type will be specific,
06:00directing you to a particular website, like MTV.
06:04Or you can just surf the net using a search engine
06:06to help you locate information on any topic you can think of.
06:09For instance, I used the World Wide Web
06:12to search the archives of the Smithsonian Museum a few weeks ago.
06:15I also had to do a homework assignment
06:17about the Wright brothers for a history assignment.
06:20Can you show us what you found?
06:21Sure!
06:46Here we go.
06:52Wow, is that the first plane the Wright Brothers flew?
06:55Yup, they called her the Kitty Hawk.
06:58So that means we can visit most any museum in the world without even leaving home?
07:02Not just museums, you can go anywhere on the net and access resources from around the corner or to the
07:08most remote regions of the world.
07:09Now that's amazing.
07:11So where else can we go?
07:13Want to write a letter to President Clinton?
07:15Would he answer us?
07:17I bet he would.
07:18Let's tell him how much we love the internet and that he should try to get more computers for our
07:22schools.
07:22But how do we even look up the White House?
07:25You type www.whitehouse.gov.
07:40It looks just like it does in our history books, only it seems more real, like we're there.
07:45Is this like sending email?
07:48It is sending email.
07:49Dear Mr. President, my name is Peter and my sister is Dasha.
07:59Our friends Lisa and Andrew came over today.
08:05Sincerely, Andrew, Lisa, Peter, and Dasha.
08:11Wow, that's really neat.
08:12But how can we get the internet on our computer at home?
08:16You're going surfing on the internet.
08:19Remember how Dad said we should start with the basics first?
08:22That's true.
08:23Well, to get started, you'll need to get connected to the internet.
08:26You do that through an internet service provider.
08:29An internet service provider?
08:31What's that?
08:32It's a service that connects you to the internet through special super high-speed lines.
08:37Your parents or teachers can help you figure this out for you.
08:40The easiest way is to use an online service provider.
08:43They give you free disk to install, and it only takes a few minutes until you're online.
08:47And we can do it ourselves?
08:49Yeah.
08:49You'll be led through a series of screens for the installation of the software.
08:53They make it simple, and they even have a helpline if you get stuck.
09:05You'll need to type in your name, address, and credit card information.
09:09Be sure to ask your folks for permission to use it.
09:22But the one thing we learned is that if your computer is having other problems, make sure
09:27you get them fixed first.
09:28Otherwise, if you're having problems when you're installing your internet disk, you won't know
09:32where they're coming from.
09:34So we installed the disk, and we could go online immediately.
09:38Does your computer have a modem?
09:40I think so.
09:42My grandpa bought it for us.
09:43It has all the latest high-tech stuff.
09:45It sounds like it should be pretty easy for you then.
09:48But you might get your folks to help, just to make sure everything's working okay.
09:52Yeah, because I remember when Dad installed ours, he backed up all of our computer data
09:56so that if there was a problem, it wouldn't get lost.
09:59And then there was something about fragments or something?
10:01That's right.
10:02Dad had to defragment the disk, too.
10:04I'm not really sure what that is.
10:06So you better get an adult to help you with it.
10:16Well, now it's time to get online through our internet service provider.
10:21Here we go.
10:22To get online, we need to type in our password.
10:25Since your internet service provider is like your own post office box, you need to access
10:29it with your own private code.
10:37Now we need to open our browser.
10:39What's a browser?
10:41It's an application that allows you to access all of the different information on the internet.
10:46Microsoft Internet Explorer came with our computer, but you can download it by typing www.microsoft.com.
11:01Or you can download the other popular browser, Netscape Navigator, at www.netscape.com.
11:08Okay, so tell us, what does download mean?
11:12That's simple.
11:13It means to transfer a file of information from a main computer or server to your computer.
11:19So once you have loaded your browser or already have it on your computer, you'll open it and
11:25it will give you a selection of search engines.
11:32What do search engines do?
11:34They search the net looking for the information you requested.
11:38Cool.
11:38So that's how you get connected to the internet.
11:41And the search engines will show us all the millions of pages of websites and chat lines
11:45and games and everything.
11:47It's all right here at your fingertips.
11:49How do we decide which search engine to use?
11:52They all have similar information, but they organize it differently.
11:56Everyone has their favorite, right, Peter?
11:57Yup, the search engines identify different categories and topics.
12:02When you decide what you're interested in, you click on the topic from the menu or type
12:07in a specific web address or word to identify a particular topic.
12:12Then the search engine links you to your selection.
12:15Yahoo, I've heard of that.
12:16So it's a search engine, right?
12:18Can we look at it?
12:19Sure.
12:20We just click on it and the next thing you know, we'll be surfing the net.
12:25Wow, look at all the choices.
12:28Let's look at Yahooigans for kids.
12:36Okay, okay.
12:37So where would you like to go now?
12:38Surfing the net.
12:40Okay, first we need to select a topic from the menu.
12:45Where would you like to go?
12:47Let's check out astronomy.
12:50Astronomy.
12:50Astronomy.
12:51Astronomy.
12:52Astronomy.
12:54Astronomy.
12:54Astronomy.
12:55Astronomy.
12:56Astronomy.
13:15That's easy.
13:16What's next?
13:17I need to do a school project on ancient Egypt.
13:20Would they have anything on it under countries?
13:22Let's see.
13:23First we check around the world.
13:25Next countries.
13:27And there it is.
13:28Egypt.
13:32Amazing.
13:32They have everything I need.
13:34Look, you can even write your name in hieroglyphics.
13:37Can we try it?
13:38Uh, L-I-S-A, right?
13:40Right.
13:41Okay.
13:51Can we do something fun?
13:53Maybe play a game?
13:54Well, let's bookmark the page so we can find it real easily.
14:05Let's go back to the Ahooligans homepage and find a game.
14:24They sure have a lot of them.
14:26Too bad we don't have time to play them.
14:29You're right, Dasha, but the tour was awesome.
14:31I can't believe how easy it is to surf the net.
14:36So let's review a few of the concepts we've been working on,
14:40just to make sure I understand them.
14:42First, we need to get an ISP, or Internet Service Provider.
14:46It connects you to the net through high-speed lines.
14:49Then, I download or install a browser that allows me to view all information on the net in my computer.
14:55Right so far?
14:57Then, I open my browser to a choice of search engines that look up menus of almost anything I can
15:02think of,
15:03whether it's my project on Egypt or Andrew playing games.
15:06It sounds complicated, but really, it all happens behind the scenes, so it's easy for you.
15:12And you're right.
15:13You can find anything from planning a vacation to MTV or real-time live audio.
15:18The net is fabulous.
15:22What are web addresses?
15:25All websites have addresses, even the ones we just looked at.
15:29So, if you know the address of the site, and you want to go directly to it, you just type
15:33in the address.
15:34The web addresses follow a simple format.
15:37As I mentioned before, they all start with HTTP as the beginning of their address.
15:43Then, additional information helps the browser locate the address you've selected.
15:47For instance, the other day, we typed in the address for Cape Canaveral.
15:51But where did you get that?
15:53We just figured it out.
15:54Look, I'll show you.
16:02A lot of addresses are easy to guess.
16:04If they're very well-known places, they probably just use their name.
16:08And then, you only need the last identifier.
16:10The typical abbreviations go like this.
16:13Dot com for commercial, dot gov for government, and dot org for organization.
16:18I can't believe how easy it is to get out into the internet.
16:21When you hear my parents talking about it, it sounds like it'd be so hard.
16:25I told you it was cool.
16:33I saw something about news and current events online.
16:37Can you look up newspapers, too?
16:39We always have a social studies test on current events.
16:42Yep, the internet has news lines that give you up-to-the-minute information
16:47from the Los Angeles Times, CNN, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.
17:30And again, you should bookmark these locations in your browser
17:33so that you can go to them really quickly, like we did before.
17:36Hey, Andrew, what about that report you have to do in science class
17:39about light and what makes colors?
17:42Oh, I was trying to forget about that.
17:44But I think it will be fun to look it up on the net.
17:47I just type in light and color and see what we get.
17:55At least you don't have to study the anatomy of a frog like we do.
18:18Can we look up my frog, too?
18:20I can get a head start on my homework.
18:22I'm so glad we don't have to dissect them like they did in the old days.
18:49Well, how'd you do that?
18:51Show me so I can come back to it later.
18:53Lisa, either we're going to have to get Dad to install the Internet right away
18:57or have Mom take us to the library to use it.
19:01And I'm sure Mom will talk Dad into it
19:03since she hates chauffeuring us everywhere.
19:06And there's so much more you can do.
19:08Hey, gang, here's a cool site you'll want to check next time you're going to the movies.
19:12They have hundreds of movie reviews, and it's free, too.
19:45I'll see you next time.
19:45Here's another one.
20:08And you can also check out the latest on TV.
20:11Nick at night.
20:13Cool.
20:51I'm going to Hawaii if I've got to swim all the way.
20:58Aloha, Wilbur.
21:00Look, no hands.
21:02Whee-hee.
21:04This is a lie.
21:06It's all starting to make sense.
21:08You just typed nickatnight.com.
21:10Hey, you said you'd show me the MTV website.
21:13Would that just be MTV.com?
21:16Yep.
21:28Someone said you could order concert tickets over the web.
21:31Is that true?
21:32Sure.
21:33My mom ordered tickets from the net to take me to the Russian ballet for my birthday.
21:59And here's another neat thing you can download off the net.
22:02Free screen savers.
22:03Really?
22:04Show me how to do that.
22:05I hate the ones we have at school.
22:07Bye.
22:08Bye.
22:15Bye.
22:17Bye.
22:18Bye.
22:19Bye.
22:20Bye.
22:51But speaking of parents, our mom is going to be here in a few minutes to pick us up.
22:55Well, quick, before you go, this is one your dad will love.
22:59It's sports news, and they have all the latest stats and scores.
23:02My dad usually looks up www.sportsnetwork.com.
23:18Lisa, that would be a good one to show dad.
23:20Then maybe he'll get us the internet at home.
23:23And that's not the only site with sports information.
23:26There are tons of them.
23:51But let's say I want to use email.
23:54You know, email is still the number one use of the internet.
23:57It's easy to set up the email program provided with your online software.
24:01And it's really easy to use, too.
24:04You just type in the name of the person you're sending it to and your message.
24:07What could be simpler?
24:21And here are some places you can get free email.
24:24www.juno.com and www.mailzone.com.
24:34What about if I want to do my own homepage?
24:37Now that's a big project.
24:38You'd better get someone to help you.
24:40But you can get a head start at www.cnet.com, centralhandspagemail.html.
25:08Hey, guys.
25:09Andrew and Lisa's mom are going to be honking any minute.
25:11You better pack up your stuff.
25:12Thanks, Mrs. Jameson.
25:13Well, you're welcome, Andrew.
25:15So, did you learn anything important today?
25:16Are you kidding? I can't go another day without the internet.
25:19Peter showed me how to look up all the information I need on my school project about Egypt.
25:23Great.
25:24We looked up school stuff and MTV.
25:27It was really cool.
25:28Well, good. I'm glad you got some of the important stuff done before you went to the games at MTV,
25:33Dasha.
25:33We did, Mom.
25:34We looked all over Egypt, Cape Canaveral, dissecting virtual frogs.
25:38We've been very busy.
25:40Well, I'm sure your folks will get it for you soon enough.
25:42I know we just love it.
25:43The kids are on it all the time between their homework and games, and I use it for new recipes
25:48and gardening tips.
25:50And Mr. Jameson gets up-to-the-minute stock reports, and I could go on and on.
25:55But you better get going before your mom wonders what you're doing.
25:58That was definitely cool.
26:00Thanks, dude.
26:01Bye.
26:01Absolutely.
26:02See you on the net.
26:03Call me the minute you get an email address.
26:06Okay.
26:06And, Andrew, we can play interactive games on the net together.
26:09Yes.
26:10Bye.
26:11Bye.
26:13You're going surfing on the internet.
26:16As a parent, I've never been happier than when my children ask their friends over for an internet computer party.
26:22I'd like to add a word about safety, though.
26:24You have to remember the internet is not a regulated environment,
26:27so the quality and accuracy of various informational offerings can differ quite a bit.
26:32There may even be a concern if your children should access some of them.
26:36So go online with them on the net,
26:39or set your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser to only accept G-rated sites.
26:44Well, how did our kids do as cyber teachers?
26:46Oh, they were big stars, of course.
26:48Oh, but, honey, did you know you could dissect a virtual frog on the internet?
26:52Oh, did you get those Rolling Stone concert tickets?
26:56And the whole family can go, right?
26:58I mean, you can buy tickets online.
27:00I don't know.
27:01What do you think, kids?
27:02Yeah.
27:03Surf's up.
27:04See you on the net.
27:06On your mark, get set.
27:09We're riding on the internet.
27:12Cyberspace, set free.
27:14Hello, virtual reality.
27:17Interactive appetite.
27:18Searching for a website.
27:19A window to the world.
27:20Got to get online.
27:21Take a spin, now you're in with the techno set.
27:23You're going surfing on the internet.
27:25You're going surfing on the internet.
27:27You're going surfing on the internet.
27:34You're going surfing on the internet.
27:39You're going surfing on the internet.
27:41You're going surfing on the internet.
27:43You're going surfing on the internet.
27:44You're going surfing on the internet.
27:45You're going surfing on the internet.
27:45You're going surfing on the internet.
27:45You're going surfing on the internet.
27:45You're going surfing on the internet.
