00:01Petra, full scan of the Zero Chamber.
00:05Melody, can you hear me?
00:06I can hear you. I'm all right.
00:08Thank God.
00:10Daniel, I raised the water, sir.
00:13Don't bother.
00:15You must have got in there a second as just her.
00:18Daniel, of all the stupid, irresponsible stunts.
00:22I want you out of there and down here now.
00:26Weatherby.
00:27Weatherby.
00:30Daniel?
00:33Daniel!
01:15He's not here.
01:17Oh.
01:19Where is he then?
01:20I haven't a clue.
01:24I thought at least you'd come and see how I was this evening.
01:26That's Daniel's.
01:28Yeah, what do you think?
01:29Did you ask if you could borrow it?
01:31Well, he offered.
01:32You know I only came on board with what I stood up in.
01:34Well, that wasn't very clever of you, was it?
01:36Well, we all make mistakes.
01:38Look, I'm sure any of the girls would be more than happy to lend you something.
01:41Yeah, okay, okay.
01:43And how are you anyway?
01:46I'm still a bit shaky.
01:47Yeah, you do seem a bit stressed, aren't?
01:50Oh, yeah?
01:52Well, you try being in zero G and then being squashed up against the bulkhead because the ship's moving at
01:5815 meters per second and you're not.
02:02Shall I tell Daniel that you're looking for me?
02:09Good morning, staff and students of Columbus College.
02:13Today is, of course, a very special day for all of us.
02:17I'm sure everyone on board will join with me in expressing our feelings of pride in the courageous actions of
02:23First Officer Lewis, which are receiving recognition today.
02:27After the award ceremony in the Dome, there will be a buffet lunch to which all students are invited.
02:32And then later, at 20 hundred, there will be a reception in my suite for staff members and a student
02:38representative.
02:42Byron says he's not going.
02:44What?
02:44Not the drinks, not the reception. He's not going.
02:47Why not? He's the Chamber of the Council.
02:49You know what Byron's like. I mean, you know the way he's been brought up.
02:52No, not really.
02:53Well, he's a bargey, isn't he?
02:56I mean, he says he thinks Fimbo is very brave and everything, but that he doesn't deserve two million accuses,
03:01which by rights belongs to the people of the Amazon rainforest.
03:03It's not two million, is it?
03:04Well, he says it is. And what's more, Fiona agrees with him.
03:07Does she indeed?
03:08Yeah.
03:09Oh, Jim, come on.
03:11Don't.
03:12Hold on.
03:13You know, I bet Fiona has never even heard of Roberta Garcia.
03:17All the people of the Amazon rainforest have found that.
03:21You haven't even been to see me.
03:23Well, I thought you were going to have a lion.
03:25Why? Didn't say I was going to have a lion.
03:27Melody, you only have to look at a bed these days to fall asleep in it.
03:30So, I'm no fun.
03:31I know it's not your fault. It's because you're having a baby.
03:34So you can't even be bothered to give me a call?
03:36Can't be bothered? I nearly broke my neck coming to rescue you after the Zero Chamber.
03:40I suppose that counts for everything.
03:41Well, it ought to count for something, yes.
03:44Morning, you two.
03:45Morning, morning.
03:45And why is that woman strutting about in your clothes?
03:48Well, I don't suppose you can strut around in my clothes, can you?
03:50Oh, ha-ha, then. Just don't answer the question.
03:55Hey, er, did you hear that Fiona and Byron refusing to go to Fimbo's reception?
03:58Yeah, typical Brian, eh? He's a bargie, of course.
04:01Oh, he isn't. Don't be so stupid.
04:04All right, his parents were bargies.
04:06Yeah, but it's a free drink, though, isn't it?
04:07Yeah, well, I'll go.
04:08It's about your level, isn't it?
04:10I just said I'll go. All right, I won't go. You go.
04:13But, Daniel, I'll be asleep by eight o'clock. No free drinks for me.
04:17Good morning.
04:19All right.
04:21Extraterrestrial sociology level two.
04:24The problems of intimate bond-forming in enclosed extraterrestrial societies.
04:46I know things will come out all right eventually.
04:49You mustn't be such a pessimist when things go wrong.
04:53Oh, no, delete that last sentence.
04:57Just because things aren't going as well as you hoped, there's no reason to get depressed.
05:02I know things are hard.
05:04And I know that your professor is unreasonable.
05:08And I know we're a long way apart.
05:11Oh, no, delete that as well.
05:16John, I don't want to preach at you.
05:19Your happiness is my happiness.
05:32Gosh, it's very grand, isn't it?
05:34I haven't worn full dress uniform since I came to Jupiter.
05:37You know, I've just seen Thimbo.
05:39He seemed awfully quiet.
05:40I think he hates all this fuss.
05:42If he had his way, he'd get his medal in the post and put it away in a drawer and
05:45forget about it.
05:46Well, maybe we should do it that way if that's what he wants.
05:48Too late now.
05:49It's funny.
05:50You'd think he'd want to bask in a little glory just for once.
05:52I know I would.
05:53I don't think Thimbo's like anybody else.
05:56Better go and doll myself up.
05:57Well, he'll appreciate that.
05:59You're going to look very smart and impressive at the ceremony.
06:02It'll be quite an occasion for him.
06:15There's no good we're going to have to do something about you.
06:17Just tell her to take them off, don't you?
06:18Just tell her.
06:19Oh, yes.
06:19Just take all my clothes off, please, Tranquility.
06:21You'd love that, wouldn't you?
06:22Oh, Daniel, will you stop being such a pretty?
06:24What are you on about?
06:25Tranquility has decided to borrow all of Daniel's clothes.
06:28No, not all of them.
06:29Look, never mind about her.
06:31What are we going to do about our student rep for tonight?
06:33Somebody has got to go to Thimbo's reception.
06:35I just do not want her parading around in your clothes, OK?
06:50Well, why don't you go, then?
06:52Me?
06:53Well, you're the one who's so worried about it.
06:55Only because I've got half a heart.
06:57I just don't want Thimbo to think that none of us care about him.
06:59Well, you go, Sarah.
07:00But I haven't been elected.
07:01All right, then.
07:03Everybody vote.
07:03Sarah!
07:04Sarah!
07:05You're elected.
07:05Oh, very funny.
07:07Hey, perhaps Anna Bacani would like to go.
07:11Hi.
07:12Hiya.
07:13Tranquility, there was a rumour you'd stolen all my clothes.
07:16Yeah.
07:16That's a nice dress.
07:18I've seen it on someone else, haven't I?
07:20Have you, Jim?
07:21Looks better on you, though, I must say.
07:22Oh, my God.
07:23Right.
07:25What do you think you are doing?
07:27And how did you get into my room?
07:29Well, Gabby let me in through the bathroom.
07:31You said any of the girls would lend me anything.
07:34I didn't say me, and I didn't say you didn't have to ask.
07:37What's wrong with Gabby's clothes?
07:39Oh, sorry.
07:40Look, I've been living with people who don't get worked out for their stupid possessions.
07:45I'll go back to wearing Daniels.
07:50Well, I must say, it's quite a good fit, isn't it?
07:55The triumph is in getting spectra from around the limb of the planet that's edged onto the sun.
07:59Aerial 9, data 300-01.
08:04Petra.
08:08How long has it been like this?
08:10Four weeks now.
08:11It's all possible, isn't it?
08:13Well, we know the properties of the absorbing species.
08:16And if the depth of the absorption feature continues at these levels.
08:19An ocean.
08:20A living, breathing ocean.
08:23Well, it doesn't have to be living or breathing.
08:26Oxygen and nitrogen and water vapor, carbon dioxide and argon.
08:31Can't you see it, Victoria?
08:32A vast blue ocean that no one's ever seen.
08:36We don't know any of that yet.
08:39Oh, Professor.
08:41You asked me to remind you.
08:43You have to get ready for the cinnamon.
08:45Oh, yes.
08:48You didn't have to say she looked nice in it.
08:51I didn't say she looked nice.
08:52That was Jim.
08:53It was you as well, Daniel.
08:54You said it fitted her better than it fitted me.
08:57And your eyes were out on store.
08:59Pack it in, Melody.
09:00You should be thinking of me, Daniel.
09:03Of course I'm thinking of you.
09:04I was thinking of you when I crashed into the Zero Chamber, wasn't I?
09:07I was thinking of you.
09:15So I thought, well, somebody's got to represent the students.
09:18Byron is such a pain.
09:20He's only thinking of himself.
09:21He doesn't give a damn about South American Indians or Finber.
09:24Yeah, well, someone's going to have to explain to Professor Brown why it's me.
09:27He'll never notice.
09:29Finber will?
09:30He leaves the fire as the student rep.
09:32Rebecca.
09:33Rebecca, will you please remove that woman from Daniel's cabin?
09:36What?
09:36That woman.
09:37That awful woman.
09:38Oh, I know.
09:38We'll talk about it later, okay?
09:40It's not doing my blood pressure any good.
09:41I can feel it going up.
09:42I can feel it getting out.
09:43Look, you don't want to overreact.
09:44We're going to be getting shot of her once we reach Pacify.
09:47Surely you can put up with her for a couple of weeks.
09:49Rebecca, I can't.
09:50I can't.
09:50Mel!
09:54I'm not mad keen on being in Daniel's cabin anyway.
09:57Are you?
09:57No, and it's hardly my fault I was put there in the first place.
10:01Well, it is sort of.
10:03Do you think it's my fault, Jimmy?
10:06No, no, not at all.
10:08And she taught me to go off and borrow women's clothes.
10:10How was I to know she didn't mean hers?
10:12She can't even get into them, can she?
10:14Before I present the medal, I should like to read an extract from the citation.
10:19You all know that I have a particular interest in this presentation
10:22because it was my life and the lives of my colleagues that Finber saved.
10:27First Officer Lewis was informed that no rescue attempt was possible
10:31because of the highly dangerous and volatile conditions prevailing on the surface of Io.
10:35He overrode that advice and single-handedly landed his craft,
10:39navigating through an increasingly severe volcanic eruption,
10:43which at that time was sending up molten lava to a height of 1,200 metres.
10:47He reached the trapped personnel and guided them to his craft and followed a course off the surface,
10:53which again, through navigational abilities, avoided the volcanic eruption.
10:58Throughout the whole period, he was in imminent danger of death, and he was aware of that danger.
11:03At no stage was his skill or his courage diminished by that fear.
11:07Well, I was there, and I can tell you that's an understatement.
11:12On behalf of the European Space Service, I now present First Officer Thimbo Lewis
11:17with the Space Service Medal for Gallantry.
11:43It's beautiful. It's so simple.
11:47Yes. They made it from metal from the Hippolyta capsule after the crash.
11:50Oh. Well, are you always going to wear it?
11:52Um, no.
11:54You don't wear medals all the time, Gabby.
11:56Well, I would.
11:57What are you going to do with two million Eccuse Thimbo? That's what I want to know.
12:00It isn't two million.
12:01I mean, you've never really been very good at spending money, have you?
12:04In other words, why don't you give it all to Daniel?
12:06No, no, it isn't two million. Who said it was?
12:09Byron.
12:10Two million was the fund that was originally set up. I just get...
12:14Yes.
12:14A hundred thousand Eccuse.
12:16That's right. How the devil did you know?
12:18Five percent interest, Daniel. I'm not altogether stupid.
12:23Yes. Actually, I'm not sure what to do with it.
12:25Well, I'll hang on to it if you want. Will you, Daniel?
12:27I think you should put it away, Thimbo, for your old age.
12:29God, Melody!
12:31I'm turning into a real boar, aren't I?
12:33Oh, no, I can see it. I'm turning into a real boar, Gabby.
12:36Yes.
12:36I mean, I might get invalided out even after all the treatment.
12:39Boring fat Melody.
12:41Have another drink.
12:42She can't. She's had to.
12:43See?
12:44Boring fat sober Melody.
12:46You know, if you invest it now in a long-term share scheme...
12:49How old do you, Thimbo?
12:50Twenty-six.
12:52In twenty years' time, when...
12:54Forty-six.
12:56No, it's not really me.
12:58Look, I don't mind.
12:59Just don't wear Melody's clothes.
13:01You don't have to wear mine if you don't want to, but don't wear Melody's.
13:04Or Daniel's, for that matter.
13:06My daughter seems a lot facile, but nothing.
13:08Yeah, well, she doesn't feel very well.
13:10And she's not particularly happy seeing you cavorting around in the clothes she can't get into anymore.
13:14All right?
13:15That's nice what you've got on now.
13:17I wouldn't mind trying that.
13:19No!
13:20I'm wearing this to Thimbo's reception.
13:22Oh, that's all right.
13:24Look, I'm sorry, but Melody's my best friend.
13:27I know what she's going through.
13:29I think she's great having a baby out here.
13:32I admire her for that.
13:34Only she doesn't seem to like me very much.
13:37Yes, well, that's because you happen to be sharing a cabin with Daniel.
13:40Not my idea.
13:42I just go where I'm put and try to make the best of it.
13:46I don't want to steal Daniel.
13:47That's what you think.
14:04Can I help?
14:05Ooh, yes, please.
14:06Could you put these plates and napkins on the table?
14:11What did you think of the ceremony?
14:13Oh, I thought it was very moving.
14:14I had to get my hanky out.
14:16Thimbo can be so difficult.
14:18I never know what he's thinking.
14:19Do you really want to?
14:20When it's important for work or something like that,
14:23it can be a bit awkward.
14:25Uh, plate and napkin.
14:26Plate and napkin.
14:28He looks so lost, doesn't he?
14:31Natasha, Thimbo's in love with you.
14:33He wants to let the world know how happy he is.
14:35Dad, I just don't see why he wants our relationship to be so public.
14:39Well, no one's ever really cared for Thimbo before.
14:41At least not as far as I know.
14:43And won't you remember what it was like the first time?
14:46Falling in love with someone and then discovering that they felt the same?
14:49Not really, no.
14:51I've never let myself get involved before.
14:54Then Thimbo must be special.
14:56He's very special.
14:57But I'm not sure he's worth jeopardizing my career for.
15:00No man's worth that much.
15:02Not even Thimbo.
15:07Coming to the reception?
15:08No, I don't think so.
15:10Oh, come on, do your good.
15:11Have a drink, relax.
15:12Things like that don't make me relax.
15:14I don't like drinking and I don't know what to say to anybody.
15:17That's rubbish.
15:18You know everybody there, there's nothing to be afraid of.
15:21I'd rather stay here and carry on marking.
15:23Don't you think you ought to show your face to Thimbo?
15:25Oh, congratulate the hero Ophelia.
15:28I don't like social occasions and, anyway, I feel awkward by myself.
15:32Without Jean-Francois you need?
15:34Yes.
15:34Yeah, well that's ridiculous.
15:35Much better off without him hanging around your neck.
15:37That's my fiancée you're talking about.
15:39Your fiancée on Island Five.
15:41Yes, because you sent him there.
15:43Mmm.
15:45Come and enjoy yourself.
15:46Come and have some fun.
15:53Well, congratulations once again, Thimbo.
15:55Thanks for the drinks.
15:56Well, I won't miss it having two million acues, will I?
16:00It's funny for a hero, isn't it?
16:01Well, who's your idea of a hero?
16:03Mercedes?
16:04No.
16:04No, Commander Paul Fitzroy Drummond.
16:07Yeah, well, why not?
16:09I like that guy.
16:10He's smoldered.
16:11Definitely.
16:12For my idea of a hero, you'd feel sort of safe with him, secure something.
16:16Yeah.
16:16Well, I wouldn't want to feel safe with him personally.
16:19Melody, who was it who rescued you from the Zero Chamber?
16:23You did, Daniel.
16:23Well, exactly.
16:25Can't see why nobody's put me up for the Space Service Medal.
16:28Because you're not in the Space Service.
16:29No.
16:30Alright, then the George Medal, whatever it is, they give students for acts of extreme heroism.
16:34Daniel, you didn't even help me out of the Zero Chamber.
16:37I wonder the danger was over, anyway.
16:40I saved your life!
16:41That would be amusing.
16:45I'm a little bit, um, sick.
16:47Anyway, so I'll leave you on when I go.
16:53Well, it's a lesson to all of us, isn't it?
16:56Let's go back to my cabin, have a few drinks.
16:58Come on, everybody?
16:59Yep.
17:00Yep.
17:00Yeah.
17:01Mm.
17:06You still working on the Aerial 9 data?
17:08Oh, yes, of course.
17:09Where's Victoria?
17:10She can tell you all about it.
17:11No, I haven't seen her.
17:11I'll go and find her.
17:12Excuse me.
17:14It's Asha.
17:15Yes?
17:15You haven't said a word to me all evening.
17:17How can I?
17:18You know, we have to be careful.
17:19Why can't we talk?
17:21The way you do it.
17:22Surely we can talk in public.
17:23We just have to be careful.
17:25Oh, what does it matter?
17:28Oh, here's Victoria.
17:29Ah, Victoria.
17:30Come and tell the captain about Aerial 9.
17:32She wants to hear all about it.
17:33I can't believe everything Professor Bellen's been telling me.
17:36Oh, he's theorizing ahead of his day.
17:38A true scientist has to make that leap in the dark.
17:43Hi.
17:44Oh, hello.
17:45I'm the, uh, student representative.
17:47We're all very proud of you, Fimbo.
17:49Thank you very much.
17:50Just a minute.
17:51Why are you the student representative?
17:52I thought it was Byron.
17:53Well, uh...
17:55Oh.
17:55What?
17:56Well, it's...
17:56It's silly, really.
17:58Go on.
17:58I mean, I don't agree with him.
18:00Tell me.
18:02Byron thinks you shouldn't take money from Roberta Garcia's organization
18:05because he's made it all by exploiting the people of the Amazon rainforest.
18:08Oh, my God, did he?
18:10I don't know.
18:16I'm not so scary.
18:18Ah, find the box.
18:18Put the box down, everyone.
18:19Where's the glasses?
18:20I don't know.
18:21Well, you live here, don't you?
18:23Oh, I'll find them.
18:24Okay.
18:26Oh, Daniel, spare us, please.
18:28Oh, come on.
18:28No, let him play.
18:29I'll leave.
18:30Sit down, then.
18:32If I were the marrying kind.
18:34If I were the marrying kind.
18:34Wish, thank the Lord, I'm not certain.
18:43Look, will you please just go to sleep?
18:48Excuse me.
18:50Okay.
18:52Have you heard from Jean-Ferrois, maybe?
18:54Yeah, I had a message yesterday.
18:56Oh, how is he?
18:57Is he still having trouble with that professor?
18:58He didn't sound very happy.
19:00Well, I'm sure it'll sort itself out.
19:02That's what I keep telling him, but he seemed to have been saying that for so long now.
19:06There's nothing serious, is it?
19:08I thought he just had to sort out his thesis to me.
19:11Yeah, if he can.
19:12Of course he can.
19:13He's very brave.
19:14I don't care whether he's bright or not.
19:17I love him.
19:18Yes, I know.
19:19Victoria.
19:21I'm sorry.
19:22Look, I'm very tired.
19:24Can you say goodnight to Professor Brennan for me?
19:28Excuse me.
19:29How much longer do we have to stay here?
19:32You'll have to stay till the end of our guest of honour.
19:34I've got to go on duty in half an hour.
19:36I thought perhaps later we might...
19:38Not now.
19:39Professor!
19:40No.
19:40Do you want any captains for Daedalus?
19:42Six over the rank of commander and 18 below.
19:45It's a long voyage.
19:46You must let me know as soon as you have a date for the selection board.
19:48Anyway, I have to go now.
19:50Thank you for a lovely party.
19:52My pleasure entirely.
19:54Well done again, Finbo.
20:01Look, it's bedtime.
20:05And when I go to sleep, you go to sleep.
20:07Got it?
20:09One kick for yes, two kicks for no.
20:13Oh, that's supposed to be on my side.
20:17Hello.
20:17Hello.
20:19Hello.
20:19Here we go.
20:20Well, it wasn't exactly fun.
20:23Well, how was it down at the club?
20:25Oh, I suppose.
20:27Tranquility was there.
20:28Oh, say no more.
20:30I tell you, she's a dire warning against giving your child a stupid name.
20:33I think I'd call my one Anne.
20:35And how is Anne?
20:37She's being naughty.
20:38Oh, that'll be her genetic makeup.
20:41Oh, I told Finbo why buying wasn't there.
20:44Why did you do that?
20:45I don't know.
20:46I couldn't really think of a lie.
20:48What did he say?
20:49Well, he looked worried.
20:51You know what Finbo's like.
20:52He's probably giving all the money back to the donkey century by now.
20:56Nah, she won't let him.
20:57Who won't?
20:58Natasha.
20:59You know, I'm not so sure that those two...
21:02Oh, come on, Sarah.
21:03She hardly said a word to him all night.
21:06Well, then, that proves it.
21:07Oh, yeah, maybe.
21:09How did Daniel get drunk?
21:11Do bears live in the woods?
21:13And he asked everybody back to his camera, but I couldn't face it.
21:16Oh, do you think they'll still be there?
21:18I suppose so.
21:20Well, you're not going to go, are you?
21:22Well, I thought maybe I'd...
21:23Sarah, please, you're supposed to be my friend.
21:26Don't go and hang around with Daniel while he's got that woman in there.
21:30All right.
21:32So why I should have to go to bed early just because you want to beats me.
22:02I can't get him.
22:20I can't do anything.
22:21If
22:21Oh, do you want to stand over?
22:22Henri?
22:30Obviously.
22:31You're on the dialogue.
22:42are you awake? yes. was it all right? did it finish up all right? well I suppose so. what's the
22:48matter?
22:49nothing. I'm just a bit flat. it's a reaction. do you fancy coming over to commsen and cheering yourself up?
22:55now? yes now. no one's around now. oh and if anybody is I suppose I can pretend to be a
23:01laundry bag.
23:03I can't come over to you because there's no cover tonight. it doesn't matter.
23:06thimbo. I'm very tired. I'll speak to you in the morning.
