00:00President of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, Viadkar, Roger Archibald, says,
00:07From England to Malta, countries across the world have patterned their celebrations after Trinidad and Tobago's carnival.
00:15He notes that the structure, the spectacle, and even the sound of soca and calypso have become essential ingredients in
00:23carnivals far and beyond these shores.
00:26Whether it's the Middle East, the Far East, Europe, Africa, wherever, it's patterned after Trinidadian carnival.
00:34That being said, I believe some type of a recompense needs to come back to Trinidad because every other country
00:44is importing Trinidadians to be part of their carnival.
00:49When you say carnival in England, if Marshall and Kes isn't performing, it's lacking.
00:54Meanwhile, First Vice President Rhea Smith says their visit is about learning from the source.
01:01She tells the Morning Edition they want a deeper understanding of how carnival is executed here to take that knowledge
01:07back to New York.
01:09With those things, we want to see how you all deal with crowd control, safety issues, services, wayfinding and that
01:16kind of thing.
01:16And so we look to see how we could fine-tune what we are doing as well, knowing that we
01:22have people who come from the Caribbean to our carnival.
01:25But then there are others, I'm sure that Trinidad gets this with tourism, who want to learn about Caribbean culture
01:31and immerse themselves in Caribbean culture, cuisine, mass music and everything.
01:35And so we want to be able to speak to how that translates to those who are not of the
01:40Caribbean.
01:40Smith also praised the visible security presence during the festivities, commending local protective services for their coordination and preparedness.
01:49There were little to no incidents right through.
01:53Congrats and kudos to all of the wonderful police force and regiment and everybody who had those things in place.
02:00But it looked like there was a concerted effort with a number of, you know, ground patrol, police, regiment and,
02:08you know, that was really wonderful to see.
02:09New York Carnival runs from September 3rd to September 7th of this year.
