00:00There are levels to this next story, Joe, that we're going to go through.
00:03Just like an onion, we're going to peel through it layer by layer by layer.
00:07Now, me, being a huge baseball fan, I love the Philadelphia Phillies.
00:11I love handicapping Major League Baseball season.
00:13We do a great show on Sunday mornings here.
00:15Myself and Tom Vecchio, Pro Baseball Today.
00:17I can't have this sport go away.
00:19And being proactive is what we usually like, Joe,
00:22which means let's get these negotiations done way ahead of the time.
00:25The NBA did it here.
00:26And I guess these sponsors aren't happy that that deal is done so quickly now.
00:29Because they're going to pay a ton of money over the next decade or so.
00:33The NFL, we used to have those work stoppages way back in the day.
00:36But then they turned into a little bit of lost training camp time.
00:39But then the NFL goes, look, we all eat so well.
00:41Do not disrupt this train.
00:43Well, Major League Baseball looks like it's heading for Armageddon.
00:46And their leader and executive director looked like he couldn't care less.
00:50He said, well, what does that mean, Donnie?
00:51Well, this guy was actually preoccupied with not getting a new deal,
00:53but absolutely securing some help in the office from his sister-in-law.
00:59Oh, hey, you look kind of good.
01:01Why don't we date?
01:02What?
01:02How about I give you a job with my union?
01:05Okay, let's date.
01:06You're both out.
01:07See ya.
01:10Just, I mean, honestly, plot twist, Donnie.
01:12When I saw this come across yesterday, I'm like, oh, boy, baseball's going away.
01:18Like, we're in trouble here.
01:19I mean, like, so if he's walking away from this, he's basically saying, it's helpless here, guys.
01:26Like, no, we're not getting anything done.
01:29And by the way, he's been in that position since, what, 2013, right?
01:33So he was set to actually begin going to spring training sites this week, Donnie.
01:40Like, everything was—so when I saw it, I was like, oh, boy, Donnie, we're not getting a new labor deal.
01:45We're going to be without Major League Baseball.
01:47And then for that plot twist to come out that, no, it was actually because he had an inappropriate relationship
01:53with his sister-in-law, of all people,
01:56who actually he hired to work for the union—the whole thing is just—what a mess, Donnie.
02:02Absolute, total mess.
02:04When everything needs to be focused on your players, you are absolutely not focused on your players at all.
02:09And I was like a union head.
02:10Like, what a great job that is.
02:11Like, okay, we have a CV at least six years.
02:13What does that guy do?
02:14Just have free pay for six years until the next union comes up, you know, and everybody gets angry at
02:18him,
02:18and he takes the arrows, but they still move forward, and you have a great life that you live.
02:22But also, as we said, Joe, there's levels to this.
02:25Like, ooh, maybe they could have covered that up or just settled a lawsuit and been okay with it.
02:29But now, correct me if I'm wrong, Joe, a union getting in trouble with improprieties with how their funds are
02:35spent.
02:35Jeff Passon sent a tweet out.
02:37Tony Clark plans to resign as executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association.
02:41Sources tell DVN Jr. and me, Clark's resignation comes in the wake of the Eastern District of New York's investigation
02:49into alleged financial improprieties at the union.
02:53And I don't know what you want here.
02:54If you're watching the show Billions here, you don't want to be getting involved with the Eastern District.
02:58They'll take you apart piece by piece by piece.
03:02So, infidelity and running your union like a mob?
03:06What am I seeing, Joe?
03:07What am I seeing?
03:08Well, that Fed investigation has been looming over him and the union for months, right?
03:15So, we've all known about this.
03:17But, you know, ironically, Donnie, that was never made a big deal of.
03:22Like, everything we've heard from him and from the union has been like, there's nothing.
03:27We denied it.
03:28There's nothing to see here.
03:30And basically, he's moved on.
03:32So, yeah, when we heard that he was stepping down, we were like, oh, boy, maybe the heat's getting turned
03:37up.
03:37No, no, no.
03:38He wasn't turned up because of the investigation.
03:40It's because somehow he figured out a way to really screw everybody over.
03:46Because now, Donnie, who takes over now, Donnie?
03:48Who takes over now?
03:50Yeah, and Major League Baseball was like, hey, we're not going to rush it.
03:52No, no, no, no.
03:53No, but trust me, guys, take your time.
03:56How about you do just like the free agency in Major League Baseball that you caused here?
03:59Sign your actual new head of your union next April when the season was supposed to happen.
04:04Oh, blindsided this year.
04:05We didn't know we had to get somebody in place to try to actually negotiate.
04:08That's what they're trying to do.
04:10So, yes, Joe, take your time on a MLB players union rep and just say to yourself, it'll be okay.
04:16Usually it should say, we have to come to an emergency vote over the next three days to get a
04:21new guy in place to start negotiations ahead of time.
04:23But, Joe, correct me if I'm wrong.
04:25There is no way these negotiations start before the CBA ends in December.
04:29They're not even going to start.
04:30It's going to be terrible.
04:31No, but what you're supposed to do is you're supposed to have somebody that is fighting for you for the
04:37year to try and avoid that.
04:39Now you've got to waste however many weeks and months here trying to figure out, how do we get somebody
04:45in here that we all feel is representing us the right way?
04:49Again, he's been there since 2013.
04:51Nobody knows where the bodies are buried like this guy when it comes to ownerships and everyone else.
04:56So, it's just a bad situation made worse now for stupidity.
05:03Now, here's also what we're hearing from Major League Baseball, which you know they're digging it as well.
05:07And there's even those quotes as, we are going to burn this thing down.
05:10They're expected to have a $75 million per team war chest to expect the next season to get completely wiped
05:17out or they don't lose any financials here at this point.
05:20You never want to hear that.
05:21Cooler heads are supposed to prevail.
05:23They almost lost the sport in the 1990s for stupidity and wiping out a World Series.
05:28They can't do it again.
05:30But then you say to yourself, they're going to do it again.
05:32The chances of Major League Baseball, at least starting on time next year for me, Joe, put that up on
05:37Calci and Polymarket.
05:38I will bet it all day long.
05:41Absolutely no shot at this point when I pray that they can get it done.
05:45Let's get back to some news here, Major League Baseball.
05:47You see the twins?
05:48Like, you know, we ain't going to spend too much money on it.
05:49Pablo Lopez done for the year after tearing an elbow ligament.
05:53Oof.
05:54Yeah, not great already like we're hearing that.
05:58And hey, I believe, Donnie, wasn't he the, I think he was the opening day starter for like the last
06:04three or four years with Minnesota.
06:06Like he's always been their top guy.
06:08And now, yeah, he's done for another year.
06:11Unbelievable.
06:12Ah, twins.
06:13They're still out of season already.
06:14Twins ownership's like, you know, we're not even going to buy anybody.
06:16Is that why, like, we're spending like Milwaukee a million dollars on free agents?
06:19Like, we're not going to pay you anyway in a year because this thing is going to get locked up.
06:22It's not going to be any big deal.
06:23Let's go over to the Mets and talk about their injuries.
06:25Here's Mendoza with a couple comments.
06:27Can other players be on that sort of stuff?
06:28Oh, yeah, we got a few of them.
06:30Albie's going to be on a progression as well.
06:32We all know how hard he works, but I don't think we'll see him in games the first week.
06:39Jorge Polanco, same way.
06:41This is a guy that when we sign him, physicals, he had a surgery about a year and a half.
06:49Some of the things just, but he's going to continue to get live at bats,
06:54and we'll put him on backfield action before we put him on a game.
06:59I think that's it for now.
07:02Oh, Brett Beatty is the other one.
07:03He felt something on the right hamstring about two weeks ago that we kind of – so he's going to
07:08–
07:09especially, like, reps in the outfield, that's going to take a little bit.
07:13But he's fine.
07:15But, yeah, because he felt something.
07:19I felt something.
07:21We sometimes talk about the lightning rods in Major League Baseball,
07:24particularly in New York City.
07:25Like, Reggie Jackson comes over to the Yankees.
07:27Like, yeah, man, I don't care about Thurman Munson over here.
07:29I'm the straw that stirs the drink over.
07:31Like, oh, that's going to go over well in the locker room.
07:33I'll tell you one guy, and I don't think he fights in the locker room with the players,
07:36but just from a fan perspective versus the team, Anthony Volpe, like, coming up so exciting.
07:42Young kid.
07:43He's going to be the next Derek Jeter.
07:44And then it turns out, like, dude doesn't come up big, makes a ton of errors.
07:48His dad's always yelling at fans in the stands.
07:50And now we find another, hey, this is an excuse, but I'm not using it as an excuse.
07:56My shoulder was really bad.
07:57What do you think about that, Joe?
08:00Yeah, it sounds like an excuse.
08:02I'm sorry.
08:03But it really does.
08:05It sounds like, I don't want, anytime you lead off, Donnie, with the, I don't want to, you know,
08:10I don't want to use it as an excuse.
08:11That's exactly what you're doing.
08:13So, yeah, no, I'm not buying it here at all.
08:17Ridiculous.
08:17Look, remember all those errors out there?
08:19That wasn't my fault.
08:20That was our doctor's job.
08:21I'll be much better this year.
08:22Yes, of course.
08:22And we'll see what happens with that one.
08:23How about you and Carlos Stan?
08:25The big man made of granite in the middle of that lineup.
08:27Let's hear from him on the offseason.
08:29We were talking to Aaron, and he was saying that with the slow offseason before they re-signed
08:33Belly and Trent, he was frustrated with the lack of moves being made.
08:37Was that how you were feeling as well?
08:41I was definitely checking to see if anything was going on, but interested, frustrating.
08:54I wouldn't say frustrating.
08:56You have all until through spring to make moves.
09:00So, just interested, curious, and, yeah.
09:08Is he on the phone?
09:10What was that?
09:11Put that picture back up just as a screenshot at this point right now.
09:15He's either ready to fall asleep talking to somebody or saying,
09:18your question is so boring here that I can't deal with it at this point.
09:21What is that?
09:22Is he talking to somebody?
09:23I'm only here so I don't get fined.
09:25Yeah, like, or is he, does he have, like, a tooth loose?
09:28Like, what's going on here?
09:30Like, is there an ice pack?
09:31What am I missing here?
09:32Look a little more engaged, will you, Giancarlo?
09:35My goodness, unreal.
09:36Can you feel it in your blood, people?
09:38Major League Baseball starting to ramp up, but maybe they ramp down next year and we don't
09:42have a season.
09:43We'll get to a couple of those topics in just a few moments, but we love these type of markets
09:47that we can look at with Calcium Polymarket, a different way to invest here.
09:50And if we're talking about the American League, who's going to win the MVP, it always starts
09:54and apparently lately finishes with Aaron Judge on Calcium, currently trading, had a 36% chance
10:00to win the MVP.
10:01Right behind him, his hit machine out there in Kansas City, Bobby Witt Jr., which, if you
10:06look at Kansas City's field and the Yankees field, it's a huge advantage to Aaron Judge.
10:10But not as much as it was last year, Joe, is Kansas City going to move in some of those
10:15fences and lower them down, maybe helping Bobby Witt, but he sits there with a 21% chance
10:21to win MVP.
10:23Well, and it's funny.
10:24Did we learn nothing from last year?
10:27I mean, let's be realistic.
10:28We started this season where we were like, the odds were so ridiculous, Donnie.
10:32We were like, you know what?
10:33Just name the awards after Ohtani and Judge and be done with it.
10:37Like, nobody is going to.
10:38Well, Ohtani, there was never a question about it, but all of a sudden with Cal Raleigh,
10:43there's always somebody that pops up and maybe, you know, the same old, same old isn't.
10:49There could be some value, maybe looking a little bit lower down on that board, Donnie,
10:54because, listen, nobody had Cal Raleigh neck and neck with Aaron Judge the final couple
10:59of weeks of the season, not even remotely close.
11:04AL MVP.
11:05Again, you're right about this, too.
11:06Like, you just had a guy last year as a catcher hit 60 bombs, and it was still Aaron Judge.
11:11So, Bobby Witt's going to have to lead Major League Base 1, hits average RBI and home runs
11:15to take down Aaron Judge.
11:16See if he can do it this year, but it's just a credit to Aaron Judge and how good he
11:19is,
11:20and he works in that ballpark, man, swinging a long drive, even if John Sterling can't tell
11:24if it's a foul ball, home run, or what, it goes out of the park here.
