00:00What are you, lost your mind?
00:01Up next on American Restoration.
00:04I got an old phone from the Forest Service.
00:06Oh, wow.
00:07You go out in the fire, then when it's time to report,
00:09type into one of the wires out in the forest
00:10and just ring it up.
00:11Right, and then you call somebody and say,
00:12hey, get a bunch of guys out here.
00:13We got a big fire going on.
00:15Yeah.
00:16Somebody stole my damn sandwich again.
00:18Payback's a bitch.
00:19People want to go around and steal my lunch?
00:21I'll fix that real quick.
00:22This is a special sandwich.
00:24They won't like this one if they eat it.
00:26That thing's got snot mayonnaise on it.
00:28Here it is.
00:29It's a little bit of a mess right now.
00:31That's got potential.
00:32You ready to see this thing?
00:33I'm ready.
00:34Okay.
00:35Come on in!
00:37Oh, wow.
00:40Look at a man's workbench.
00:42You see his passions.
00:45His work's in progress.
00:49The things that drive him crazy.
00:53Projects that?
00:55You get the point.
00:56Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:59And this is ours.
01:01American Restoration.
01:07Mmm, balloony.
01:08I'll be back for you at lunch.
01:12We get different kinds of customers here at the shop all the time.
01:15Lots of times, people walk in not knowing exactly what they want.
01:19That can be a lot of work for us because we usually end up showing them a lot of items.
01:23Hey, Rick.
01:25What's up?
01:26Other times, we get lucky and someone walks in knowing exactly what they want.
01:30Hey, how are you?
01:31This is Ron.
01:32Good to meet you.
01:33This is Rick.
01:34He's actually interested in the Shriner car that I picked up about too long ago.
01:37Oh, yeah, yeah.
01:38Oh, awesome.
01:39You want to see it?
01:40Yes, I look.
01:41Okay.
01:42Yeah, yeah.
01:43It's right over here.
01:44The Shriners drive these mini cars in parades across the country to raise money for children's charities.
01:53The group became so synonymous in driving these cars, they ended up calling them Shriner cars.
01:59Okay, well, here it is.
02:01Yeah, it's a little bit of a mess right now.
02:04It's got potential.
02:05Oh, yes.
02:06That's got potential.
02:07Is this something you're thinking about, you know, maybe if we restored it?
02:10What are you thinking?
02:11Yes, definitely.
02:12It's like a Model A.
02:14It's more a shape of a Model T, but I have the Model As.
02:18And I'd like to basically use this alongside my other one when I go to car shows.
02:23Oh.
02:24I think that would be ideal to have basically a father and a son.
02:27Oh, I got you.
02:28So cool.
02:29Go-kart version.
02:30Go-kart version of a Model A.
02:31Oh, that's cool.
02:32So you're not really looking at a parade car.
02:34No, no.
02:35You want to do a custom?
02:36I want to do it my own way.
02:37Oh.
02:38Basically, I have a couple pictures here.
02:40What I'd like for it to look like.
02:41Oh, wow.
02:42That's nice.
02:43That's a 1930 Model A.
02:45So you're thinking of just taking this and just black with a yellow pinstripe and yellow
02:49wheels.
02:50Definitely, yes.
02:51Then the back, actually the back, when you flip that down.
02:53Yeah, that would be my thing.
02:54It would actually kind of look like that.
02:55That's a luggage rack.
02:56Yeah.
02:57Where they used to put a truck on.
02:58So do you want me to paint that looking like a luggage rack, or do you want me to describe
03:00it like a luggage rack?
03:01My oldest son passed away.
03:02He's only 35 years old.
03:04Oh.
03:05And I'd like to put a picture of him right in here in honor of him in memory of my oldest
03:10son.
03:11Oh, that's nice.
03:12That would be nice.
03:13That's a good thing.
03:14That's very cool.
03:15That's awesome.
03:16The thought of even losing a son is hard to imagine.
03:19And the fact that this thing is a restoration for a father and son really hits home.
03:24What do you suppose it would cost to have it looking like this?
03:28Like that?
03:29A full restoration.
03:30Um, to get it all with the little extras you've got on there, I'd probably be right
03:35around, uh, I'd be, I'd be between $95,000 and $10,000 to do that just like you got on
03:42there.
03:43Would you go $9,000?
03:45Nine.
03:46I have a feeling that this project is going to come in well over $9,000 when it's all set.
03:53and done.
03:54But the story of this guy's son passing away really affected me.
03:58So there's no way that I'm not going to do this job.
04:01I tell you what, I've got a little gut instinct here.
04:03I think, you know what, I'm going to go $9,000.
04:05I'll do it for $9,000.
04:06Thank you very much.
04:07You all right with that?
04:08Appreciate it.
04:09Awesome.
04:10Thank you very much.
04:11I love the idea of the miniature and the big version.
04:13Very cool.
04:14I just can't wait to see what it's going to look like.
04:17Because I know Rick will make it look just like the one I have at home.
04:23Lunch.
04:24It's lunchtime, turd.
04:25Where the hell is my sandwich?
04:26You eating my sandwich, Bradley?
04:27No.
04:28I bet you gave it to the dog.
04:29No.
04:30We're about to go eat lunch, too.
04:31This ain't the first time this has happened.
04:32I bring in a sandwich every day, and somebody's been taking my sandwiches.
04:37It wasn't me.
04:38Somebody's got some big balls in his shop.
04:40Somebody's been stealing my lunch, and I'm going to find out who did you can bet your ass.
04:51Somebody stole my damn sandwich again.
04:56I'm going to have to eat my sandwich.
04:59Somebody stole my sandwich again.
05:01I'm gonna find out who did, you can bet your ass.
05:04Somebody stole my damn sandwich again.
05:07Wasn't me, I keep getting blamed for it.
05:09What, I mean, what kind of sandwiches are they anyways?
05:12Baloney.
05:13And nobody's stealing your lunch out of there,
05:15I guarantee that.
05:16My sandwich spot has no sandwich in it.
05:20Yeah, well, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.
05:23Payback's a bitch.
05:31How you doing?
05:43Hi, how are you?
05:44I'm Rick.
05:45Brandon.
05:46Brandon.
05:47Yeah.
05:48What you got?
05:49You got something?
05:50Yeah, I got something for you.
05:51I got an old phone.
05:52Oh, yeah?
05:53Oh, wow.
05:54Here, let's bring it over here.
05:55I came to Rick's restoration today to have him look at my 1933 field phone.
05:57This is cool.
05:58So, where'd you get this thing?
05:59I've been working for the agency, firefighting agency, for about eight years now, and my
06:03father, he worked for 38 years.
06:04Oh, wow.
06:05Yeah, and so we both just started collecting, and he found this.
06:09It's from 1933, you can tell on the front, it has USFS, R5.
06:11Yeah.
06:12United States Forest Service?
06:13Yeah, Forest Service, yes.
06:15The Forest Service, we specialize in the wildland fires, a lot of the forest fires and
06:19big brush fires that have happened in Southern California, where I'm from, and then also
06:23all over the country.
06:24Right now, I'm on a hot shot crew, which is basically a 20-man cruise.
06:26Oh, I know what a hot shot crew is.
06:2720-man cruise.
06:28Are you really?
06:29These are bad mofos.
06:30So, what's the biggest fire you were in?
06:32Uh, actually, the biggest fire we fought was last year in Arizona on the Wallow Fire.
06:35Uh, it was actually the state's largest fire in the history of the state.
06:39Oh, wow.
06:40About 500,000 acres.
06:41Wow.
06:42Hot shot crews have been around since the 1940s, and these guys, they're no joke.
06:47They're always at the most dangerous parts of the fire, and they're often the only reason
06:52the fire doesn't get out of control.
06:53What they were doing is, they had telephone lines that would string up in the forest, then
06:57you'd come in and they'd just tap into it, and it's got the magneto and the generator inside,
07:00just crank it up.
07:01Crank it up.
07:02So, these are the guys carrying this?
07:03Yeah, they had a guy carrying it, so you go out in the fire, and when it's time to report,
07:07type into one of the wires out in the forest and just ring it up.
07:09Right, and then they call somebody and say, hey, get a bunch of guys out here, we've got
07:12a big fire going on.
07:13Yeah.
07:14That's cool.
07:15So, what do you want to do to this thing?
07:17I mean, it sounds like a collecting piece.
07:19Basically, yeah, I want to collect it.
07:20It's going to definitely stay in my family.
07:22Okay.
07:23Yeah, I definitely want to clean the wood up, new leather strap, polish up all the brass.
07:26Okay.
07:27Just get it back to the way it was.
07:28Basically, the guy just got it in his station, and I don't know if that's burned or how that
07:32is.
07:33Yeah, it was.
07:34It was a burn.
07:35That's definitely something that I definitely want to keep on there.
07:36Do that on there.
07:37Yeah, this will be burned a little bit harder in here.
07:38Okay.
07:39You know, where you can see it a little bit more.
07:40Sounds good.
07:41I want to use all the original wood.
07:42Yeah, as much of the original stuff as you can would be really nice.
07:44Yeah.
07:45And then inside here, we can go ahead and, you know, I can try to find a battery.
07:48Yeah, for sure.
07:49To fit it in here.
07:50These wires probably one time ran over to here.
07:52Okay.
07:53This is a little frozen up, so I'm going to have to get inside and see what's going
07:56on, why it's frozen.
07:57So, what's it going to cost me to get this thing good again?
08:00All right, well, I'm looking at 2200.
08:05Okay.
08:06I'm going to do it, yeah.
08:07All right, awesome.
08:08Cool, man.
08:09Awesome, awesome.
08:11Okay.
08:12And we'll finish out the paperwork, and I'll get that thrown in the line.
08:14Sounds good.
08:15I'm definitely excited to come back and see the field phone whenever it gets finished
08:18and just see this thing like it was back in 1933.
08:22Look at that wheat bread.
08:24I love wheat bread.
08:25People want to go around stealing my lunch, I'll fix their cookie wagon real quick.
08:30But that's a good-ass sandwich, huh?
08:31It's really good.
08:32Made it especially for you.
08:34You ready?
08:35Let's see.
08:36Here we go.
08:37One, two, three.
08:38Oh, my God.
08:39What do you think?
08:40Beautiful.
08:41That is just how I pictured it.
08:43Ha, ha, ha.
08:52Start with that one?
08:53All right.
08:54We just got a new shipment of items at the shop, so Kelly and I are going to go through
08:59the crates.
09:00She's got customers calling for quotes on this stuff, so we've got to go through them.
09:03Aw.
09:04How cute.
09:05All right.
09:07Got it all out?
09:10Yeah.
09:11All right.
09:12Oh, wow.
09:13That is cool.
09:14This pedal car is probably out of the 60s.
09:17It's got a lot of plastic on it.
09:18It's got a plastic windshield, which I think that's probably the first windshield I've ever
09:22seen on one of these.
09:23Really?
09:24Yeah, I've never seen one with a windshield.
09:25I can see why, and it just falls off, and then that's it.
09:28It's missing the ladder.
09:30The other thing is they made it, the paint is very metallic red.
09:34It's not the fire engine red that it normally is, right?
09:37Right.
09:38And it's made by AMF.
09:39You know who AMF was, right?
09:40Who?
09:41AMF made a lot of sports equipment.
09:43They got into Harley.
09:44They bought Harley for a while.
09:45It was in the 60s.
09:46They were a big deal.
09:47I see this thing costing about, I don't know, $2,500 to restore.
09:50Very cool.
09:51Okay, so you give them a call?
09:52Yeah.
09:53This fire engine's fire hot.
09:56Okay.
09:57Now, what is this?
09:58What do you think it is?
09:59I don't know.
10:00It says this side up.
10:01Let's just undo the top.
10:04Ready?
10:05Yeah.
10:08That thing's cool.
10:10Dang.
10:11That is awesome.
10:12So this is like a restoration.
10:13Well, he just said, you told me to ship it over and we'll give him a quote.
10:18So he's waiting for a quote.
10:19Yeah.
10:20Well, I can see why.
10:21Probably the pictures didn't say enough.
10:23We've never done one of these.
10:24No.
10:25It's probably 40s.
10:26It's got the, I mean, this is old Harley looking seats.
10:28Right.
10:29It's got dual seats.
10:30Look at this.
10:31That's how the one person held on the back.
10:32Oh, wow.
10:33It looks like it's a Chamonetta.
10:34I mean, by the name, it looks like it's Italian.
10:36So we're gonna have a hard time with parts.
10:38But what we'll do, Kel, is we'll go ahead and give this guy a quote.
10:41I'd say about 9,500.
10:42Okay?
10:43Call him up and quote him out.
10:45See if he wants to, you know, continue on.
10:47Okay.
10:48Otherwise, we'll go ahead and ship this thing back if he doesn't want it done.
10:50I'm excited to do this restoration.
10:51It'll be cool.
10:52Definitely.
10:53Let's get out of this heat.
10:54I hear you.
10:55Let's get back in that air-conditioned room and get some stuff finished.
11:05What's up?
11:06What's up?
11:13What are you doing?
11:14Somebody keeps stealing my sandwiches.
11:16Is there taping it up?
11:18This is a special sandwich.
11:20They won't like this one if they eat it.
11:23It's a special cowboy sandwich.
11:26All righty, Dad.
11:28People want to go around and steal my lunch?
11:30I'll fix that real quick.
11:32You don't steal another man's sandwich.
11:35Period.
11:41What's up, Ted?
11:42Earlier, a customer came in and hired us to fix up the old Model T Schreiner car we got in a while back.
11:48This will be a memorial piece, which will have a dedication on the back,
11:51so I'm following Ted while he works his magic.
11:53Essentially what we'll do is we'll take this photograph that they gave us,
11:57and we'll scan it, we'll add the text, and we'll print it out as a decal.
12:02Okay.
12:03It's a memorial photo, so that in itself will lend a little bit of the message that we're trying to convey here
12:08about who he was and why everybody wanted to remember him.
12:11So we're going to have to crop all these people out of the background and just isolate more in there,
12:15so bringing some graphic elements like these scrolls.
12:19Wow.
12:20That's cool.
12:21And then you can print that out and then stick it on there and then clear coat it?
12:25Yep.
12:26We'll apply it to the back of the car, and then it'll look just like it's all part of the car.
12:29All right.
12:30Let's print it out.
12:31Wow.
12:32That looks good.
12:33Look at that.
12:34That looks really good.
12:35Ted came up with amazing artwork for this.
12:36He just went above and beyond.
12:37This should really make the customer happy, and that's what it's all about.
12:52I love wheat bread.
12:53I love wheat bread.
12:54So I go in the work room, guess who I see eating my sandwich that I made and put in that
13:10refrigerator?
13:11Ron.
13:12People want to go around stealing my lunch, I'll fix their cookie wagon real quick.
13:17But that's a good ass sandwich, huh?
13:18It's really good.
13:19I made it specially for you.
13:20Is it yours?
13:21Yeah.
13:22I got my name all over it.
13:23I just thought somebody left them in there and, you know, something good.
13:26No.
13:27Leftovers.
13:28He wants to say he didn't see it?
13:29Bull .
13:30I had it wrote, clear as day, cowboy sandwich on there.
13:33Well, that's an awesome sandwich.
13:35It is.
13:36You want to have?
13:37I couldn't eat that.
13:38That thing's got snot mayonnaise on it.
13:41Are you serious?
13:43Dude, that's disgusting.
13:44You were eating it.
13:46Who does that?
13:47I do like that when people steal my .
13:50Did you really put snot on that sandwich?
13:52Hell yeah.
13:53I knew he was gonna steal it again.
13:55If Ron wants to steal my lunch every day, I'm gonna add a special ingredient.
13:59Bologna on wheat with some cowboy snot in between.
14:02Mm-mm-mm.
14:03I hope he catches something.
14:05I don't know if Cowboy's telling the truth or if he's just messing with me.
14:09All I know is I don't ever want to see another bologna sandwich for the rest of my life.
14:21And then it solidifies it.
14:23If you have to rub it out a bit.
14:24Hey.
14:25Hey, Rick.
14:26How you doing?
14:27Brandon.
14:28How you doing, bud?
14:29We've been working really hard on a super cool 1930s fireman field service phone that Brandon brought in.
14:35He's an actual fireman for the forestry service, so I'm really excited to show him what we've done with him.
14:41What's been going on?
14:42It's work.
14:43A lot of work recently.
14:44Really?
14:45Yeah, I've been pretty busy.
14:46A lot of fires.
14:47Yeah, yeah.
14:48Having fun.
14:49You're having fun?
14:50Yeah, I love my work, man.
14:51All right.
14:52Well, I've got this thing done.
14:53It's over here.
14:54When I left it, it was pretty beat up.
14:56Wood was all cracked.
14:57Brass was all rusted out.
14:59I was hoping that Rick was able to clean it up and make it look really presentable.
15:03It came out hot.
15:04It came out really, really cool.
15:05I'm excited.
15:06I'm excited.
15:07Yeah, you're going to love it.
15:08Okay?
15:09My anticipation, your reaction is just as bad right now.
15:11You ready?
15:12Let's see it.
15:13Here we go.
15:14One, two, three.
15:15Pow!
15:16Oh, my God.
15:17What do you think?
15:18Beautiful.
15:19That is just how I pictured it.
15:20I've got to play with it.
15:23Oh, wow.
15:24That is amazing.
15:25I was shocked.
15:26The work that he did was amazing with the brass and the aluminum.
15:29It was beautiful.
15:30I love it.
15:31A little different than it was before, right?
15:32Just a little bit, yes.
15:33Right?
15:34That is amazing.
15:35It's got a little light, but it's pretty cool.
15:36Yeah, that's exactly how I wanted it.
15:37Right.
15:38You know, when we took everything apart, you remember this was all painted.
15:40Yeah.
15:41We stripped it, and it was sharp looking.
15:43So when we started polishing out, I thought, wow, we might as well just leave it like that.
15:47Oh, wow.
15:48The wood, you know, we went over it, and then we stained a little bit, and then we cleared it,
15:51so it's all nice and varnished out.
15:53Yeah.
15:54On the side, went through the generator portion of it, made it all work, so we'd wind it up.
15:58That's awesome.
15:59That tone would actually ring off to someplace else.
16:01They'd hear it, and they'd pick up the phone.
16:03I love it.
16:04This is one of my biggest features right here is this right here.
16:06Yeah.
16:07This is the agency, the year, and my region.
16:09Right.
16:10Oh, and that's what this is, the R5?
16:11That's an R5.
16:12It's a region, yeah.
16:13Oh, that's cool.
16:14They break down the continental U.S. and regions.
16:15Region 5 would be California, which is important to me because my whole family has worked in R5.
16:20So, and that's where I work, and this is kind of, it's just awesome.
16:23That's cool.
16:24When we sanded this, this started getting, it went away.
16:26Yeah.
16:27So, I went in, and I took a little wood burner, and I had to actually, like, try to draw that
16:32on there.
16:33And then when he sanded on it, it kept the burn.
16:35Okay.
16:36Because it looks amazing.
16:37Thanks.
16:38I love it, and it's going to be part of the family forever now.
16:40Good.
16:41Well, I'm glad you like it, okay?
16:42I love it.
16:43You did a great job.
16:44Thank you, sir.
16:46Well, that's the biggest thing to me.
16:47Yeah.
16:49Well, let's go in the office, and we'll just, I just want to finish out the paperwork.
16:50Yeah, sounds good.
16:51Take that thing home.
16:52I'm really excited to get it restored and added to my collection.
16:54And after seeing today what Rick did, it's a beautiful piece, and it's going to be the
16:57highlight of my collection.
16:59Here at the shop, we paint all kinds of metals.
17:03Different metals require different kind of primers.
17:06What kind of primer do you use on aluminum?
17:10A, polyurethane.
17:13B, lacquer.
17:16C, etching.
17:18The answer is coming up.
17:21Etching primer.
17:22When you use etching primer, it actually bites into the aluminum.
17:28If you used another type of primer, the paint wouldn't stick, and it would actually just blow clean off.
17:36Every job here is important, but when we get to do a job for a customer that's dedicating it to a loved one, that means the world to us.
17:51Warren recently bought a parade car from us and wanted it restored in honor of his fallen son.
18:08We just wrapped up the finishing touches, and I can't wait to have him see this thing.
18:15Rick.
18:16Warren's here.
18:17Hey.
18:18Hi, Warren.
18:19How you doing, Rick?
18:20Good. How you doing?
18:21Doing good.
18:22Yeah, you have a good trip?
18:23Real good trip.
18:24All right.
18:25You ready to see this thing?
18:26I'm ready.
18:27Okay.
18:28Been ready.
18:29I'm anxious.
18:30Okay, all right, all right.
18:31Come on in!
18:32Last time I was here, it looked like a piece of junk.
18:36I didn't think that it could even be fixed, and I can't wait to see what it looks like.
18:41Here it comes.
18:42Oh, my God.
18:44Oh, wow.
18:45Oh, wow.
18:46What do you think?
18:47Beautiful.
18:48Beautiful.
18:49I thought it was awesome.
18:50I mean, it blew me away.
18:51I never dreamt that it would look that good.
18:52I mean, it's just, it's awesome.
18:53Are you sure it's the same one?
18:54Yeah.
18:55Can't be the same one.
18:56Yeah, no, I remember it was blue and white, and it was just beat to the ground.
19:13Oh, I don't believe it.
19:15Oh, that, that's hard.
19:18That's hard.
19:19I mean, that's, you know, I'll tell you what, I couldn't be more happier.
19:24Oh, my God.
19:25The photo sort of choked me up.
19:28He was my firstborn, and I thought this would be a good way to honor him and show tribute to him.
19:34Words can't explain it.
19:35It is just beautiful.
19:37Yeah.
19:38You've got a Model A, and this was a T, but you wanted it with the same look.
19:42You wanted to have the tires the same, the trim running, you know, a little bit of the pinstriping around there.
19:47I was trying to match the picture of the car.
19:49You couldn't have got in any closer if I'd had the car sat in here.
19:53The wheels on it are totally stocked.
19:55You had the double bumper on your, on your car.
19:58Yeah.
19:59Made this.
20:00Made it look like your, you know, your car with the doubles on there.
20:02I went ahead and matched the material out exactly on the side panels.
20:05Identical.
20:06Went totally through the motor.
20:07Took it all apart.
20:08New piston.
20:09New belt.
20:10It's all been gone through, ready to go.
20:11My son, he'd be so happy.
20:13Yeah.
20:14He'd be tickled to death.
20:15It means a lot.
20:16Thank you, sir.
20:17Very much, Rick.
20:18You bet.
20:19I can't wait till Rick gets your shift home for me.
20:21It says, for my wife to sit, my children sit, my grandchildren sit.
20:25I know they're going to want to play in it, and I, it's just awesome.
20:29Yeah.
20:30We definitely need some 81s.
20:31We need some 96s.
20:32Um.
20:33Baloney.
20:34Is there anything else that you know of?
20:35Um.
20:36Hold on.
20:37What?
20:38Dude.
20:39That's Ty, that's, um, that's Cowboys.
20:40What the heck was that about?
20:41Dude, those are Cowboys, like, special sandwiches.
20:42No!
20:43Kelly made me that sandwich.
20:44Kelly made you those?
20:45Yeah!
20:46What are you, lost your mind?
20:47My bad.
20:48I thought they were Cowboys.
20:49Sorry.
20:50No, Kelly made me that sandwich.
20:51Kelly made you those?
20:52Yeah!
20:53What are you, lost your mind?
20:54My bad.
20:55I thought they were Cowboys.
20:56Sorry.
20:57My God!
21:00He stepped on it!
