00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02There it is, right there.
00:04Look at that.
00:05This is heavy duty.
00:06Yeah, nobody could break into them.
00:07They dropped a nuclear bomb on one of these,
00:10and it was still there.
00:11Wow.
00:12What is that?
00:13That's an old Zelda Shriner parade car.
00:18What is this?
00:19We don't need stuff that looks cool.
00:21We need stuff that makes us money.
00:22This thing looks cool.
00:23What is that?
00:24This is an egg handler from 1950s.
00:27Wow.
00:27When they manufacture stuff like this,
00:29they put them together to where that's it.
00:31They're not meant to be taken apart.
00:34Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:37and people took pride in their work?
00:40My name's Rick Dale,
00:41and I bring these things back to life.
00:45Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:49There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:51but there's no job we can't handle.
00:55Ooh.
01:06Babe?
01:07Hey.
01:07Michelle's here.
01:08You talked to her on the phone about the cannonball safe.
01:10I'm Dane.
01:10Dane, good to meet you.
01:11Michelle?
01:12Michelle.
01:12A little while ago,
01:13Ron brought in a 1920s cannonball safe
01:16that he got from a pick.
01:17This is a gnarly safe and really heavy.
01:20And now I was able to find a potential customer
01:23that was looking for a safe.
01:24So I'm going to see if she might be interested in this one
01:27as well as a custom restoration.
01:29You excited?
01:30Yes.
01:30Okay, come on.
01:31We're here today because I talked to Rick
01:33in regards to a safe.
01:35There it is right there.
01:36Whoa.
01:37Look at that.
01:37I was looking for one that had unique characteristics
01:40and couldn't be moved easily.
01:42Why are you guys thinking about a safe?
01:44Well, we actually had a break into our house.
01:47Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
01:48And the one thing that had sentimental value
01:50was his coin collection.
01:52Wow.
01:53No, that meant a lot to you, didn't it?
01:54Yeah.
01:55His father's great-grandmother gave certain coins to him
01:58and he's passed them on to him.
02:00So now those are gone.
02:01And I can totally relate.
02:02I mean, nobody stole mine,
02:04but when I was a kid, I was collecting pennies.
02:07And under my closet, I had a secret compartment
02:09and I put my coin collection down in there.
02:10I guarantee right now, to this day, it's still in there.
02:13So now you want to lock your stuff down
02:15to where nobody can take it.
02:17The guy that takes this safe out of your house,
02:19he's going to have to be a big boy.
02:21This is heavy duty.
02:21Yeah, this is a heavy duty safe.
02:23It's made by Mosler.
02:24And their big claim to fame
02:26was that nobody could break into them.
02:28Out here at the test site in Nevada,
02:30they dropped a nuclear bomb on one of these
02:33and it was still there.
02:35Wow.
02:36So you can feel safe now
02:37when you get your coin collection going again,
02:39you can put it inside there.
02:41Does it work?
02:42This one's open.
02:43Okay.
02:45Whoa.
02:46It's all concrete and steel.
02:48This is a solid piece of steel in here.
02:50This is a time lock.
02:51You can set those to different times
02:53and that's the only time you can open it.
02:55You crank it here, okay, boom, it locks the door.
02:58What kind of price are we looking at here?
03:01Totally complete, ready to go to your place.
03:03It's going to be $6,500.
03:05$6,500?
03:06Yeah.
03:08You think your money's going to be safe in here now,
03:10your coin collection?
03:11Well, once you told me about the atomic bomb,
03:13that convinces me.
03:16You got yourself a deal.
03:17Awesome.
03:18Awesome.
03:19Thank you, Dane.
03:20Your money's safe, okay?
03:21All right, well, let's go in the office.
03:23We'll take care of this.
03:23I'm looking forward to coming back
03:25and getting the safe, seeing it restored
03:27so that we can get it home
03:28and we can put his new coin collection in.
03:31It's heavy.
03:32I'm still trying to figure out
03:33how we're going to get it home.
03:40There's a guy here in town
03:41that I've heard about.
03:42Apparently, he's got some wild stuff.
03:44I've been trying to see this guy for a while
03:45and we finally got the green light
03:47so Tyler and I are headed over there.
03:49Oh, my God.
03:51Who has that much time on our hands?
03:52This guy, obviously.
03:55I love going pigging with Ron
03:57and I have no idea
03:59how he finds these crazy places.
04:01Hey, how are you?
04:02Hey, guys, how you doing?
04:03Good.
04:04I'm Marty.
04:04Marty.
04:05I'm Ron.
04:05I've been here for 20 years.
04:07I've been collecting things for over 20 years
04:10and bringing things home.
04:11Good Lord.
04:13Tyler.
04:14What?
04:15There's a lot of stuff here.
04:16What is that?
04:17This is an old coffee grinder.
04:19You would have this in the general store
04:20and whatever you wanted to grind up,
04:22you just pour in here
04:23and then spin this.
04:25Comes out the bottom all ground for you.
04:28Oh, yeah.
04:29Is it supposed to make that noise?
04:31No.
04:31It's an awesome piece.
04:32It's very, very Renate.
04:34Got all the stars through here.
04:35Actually, I like it.
04:36This guy has a lot of junk,
04:38but I can see right away
04:39there's some gems here, too.
04:40We have done a ton of coffee grinders in the past,
04:43but nothing this big.
04:44This thing could be worth some big bucks.
04:46You think this is something my dad would be into?
04:49Your dad drinks gallons of coffee.
04:51Is it something he'd be into restoring?
04:53Yes.
04:53I think I've already got some guys looking for these.
04:56So everything out here is for sale?
04:58Pretty much everything is for sale.
05:00This?
05:00For this, I would like to get $2.75.
05:05All right.
05:06We're not here just to buy one thing.
05:08We'd like to get a couple of things.
05:09I'd love to show you more.
05:10All right.
05:11I think you said...
05:12You got that new denim ink?
05:13Yeah.
05:13Okay.
05:14Show us more stuff.
05:20Yeah.
05:22Yeah.
05:23Have them take off all the electric motors
05:24and want them to test all those
05:25and make sure they work.
05:29Hi.
05:30How are you?
05:30Hi.
05:31I'm fine.
05:31I'm Lois.
05:32Lois.
05:33Good to meet you.
05:33I'm coming to Rick's restoration today
05:35with an egg candler to see if he can restore it.
05:37I grew up on an egg farm
05:39and it's been in our family for about 50 years now.
05:42This thing looks cool.
05:43What is that?
05:44This is an egg candler from 1950s.
05:47Wow.
05:48There's also a scale to weigh the eggs
05:50and know whether they're small, medium, or large.
05:53And these are just a sanding block
05:55to clean the eggs if there was any dirt
05:57or any poop on the eggs.
05:58That's very cool.
06:00My dad would clean the egg.
06:01He would candle each one of them.
06:03He'd put them into the egg cartons
06:04and then sell the eggs.
06:05So candling basically is to see
06:07if there's something in the egg, right?
06:09I mean, a blood or something like that?
06:10Yes, if there's any blood spots in the egg.
06:11And if the blood spots there,
06:12it meant that they were fertile?
06:13Yes.
06:14So we don't want to eat those.
06:15This egg candler is a really awesome piece of Americana.
06:19This goes back to the days
06:20when everything in farming was done by hand.
06:23And there weren't any high-tech machines
06:25like there are today.
06:27There should be a bulb in there.
06:28There is a bulb in there.
06:29But how the heck do you get it in there?
06:30I don't know.
06:31When they manufacture stuff like this,
06:33they put them together to where they're together.
06:35That's it.
06:36They're not meant to be taken apart.
06:37They're not meant to be taken apart.
06:38Yes.
06:38That's about the biggest challenge I see.
06:40But it's very cool.
06:41I've never seen one.
06:43I'm not a farmer.
06:44I'm a surfer.
06:46So how much do you think it'll cost?
06:48With all the electrical,
06:50reproducing these decals with the paint,
06:52I'm looking at probably $500.
07:00It will be nice to bring back the memories,
07:02so I'll go ahead and do it and get it restored.
07:05All right.
07:05Awesome, awesome.
07:06All right.
07:06Well, I appreciate you bringing it.
07:08Let's go in the office and take care of some paperwork.
07:10I'll be very excited to see the Seg Candler when it's done
07:13and be able to get to use it again and show everyone.
07:23What is that?
07:24Can I drive that?
07:25That is drivable, yes.
07:27Yes, I want to drive it.
07:29You better be careful, dude.
07:30I don't think we got clown car insurance.
07:40Hey, Rick.
07:40Hey, Brian.
07:41The Cannonball Safe is a big project.
07:43We can handle the exterior work in-house,
07:45but I called in Brian, our lock specialist, to help us out.
07:49This thing's a beast, man.
07:50That's an understatement.
07:51Yeah.
07:51I'm very, very excited to do it.
07:53It's something that we don't see very often.
07:55One thing we don't want to do is take that door off.
07:57This door probably weighs 500 pounds.
07:59As small as they are, they're extremely heavy.
08:02This thing is probably close to 5,000 pounds.
08:04They're almost impossible to get into if they're locked up.
08:07Fortunately, this one's open.
08:08We need to come up with a combination for the thing,
08:10so the first thing I got to do is get to the lock itself.
08:13Okay, let's see if we can get this thing open.
08:16All right.
08:17Hey.
08:18You got it.
08:19You just picked it with that other thing?
08:20All you're doing is just moving this little lever here.
08:22This is the easy part.
08:23Look at how beautiful that is.
08:24Yeah, isn't that nice?
08:25This is a time lock.
08:26When the clocks are wound, even with the combination,
08:29you can't unlock it until these clocks run down.
08:31You want it locked up for 24 hours.
08:33You set all three clocks to the same thing.
08:35You move them over here to 24.
08:37There's a little index up here.
08:38And then when you close the door,
08:39this trigger locks that bolt so that bolt won't come back in.
08:43Let's see if the clocks actually work.
08:46Yep, that one's already turning.
08:48Wow.
08:48Sure enough.
08:49All three clocks work.
08:51I think the whole clock mechanism should come out like this.
08:55Oh, yeah.
08:57All your wheels are moving.
08:58Your springs look all good.
08:59Let's set this out of the way so nothing happens to it.
09:02Don't drop it.
09:02Got it.
09:03All right, we need to take this thing out.
09:04Okay.
09:08Okay, let's take this off.
09:09Our lock should be right here.
09:12Okay.
09:13No lock.
09:15The combination mechanism wasn't where we thought it was in the back.
09:19So now we're going to try to access the front to see if it's there.
09:22If it's not in there, I'm hoping Brian has something up his sleeve because I have no clue where it
09:27is.
09:29Yay!
09:30We got it.
09:32Wow.
09:32Under here, you're going to see the wheels.
09:34Right.
09:34You could probably tell you what the combination was.
09:37There's your wheels.
09:38Oh, yeah.
09:39You're numbered from zero up to 99.
09:42Right.
09:42When you dial the combination, all these notches here line up with this piece.
09:48Right.
09:49And when you turn the dial, this should fall in.
09:53And allow it to open.
09:54And that pulls the bolt back.
09:55Right.
09:56Right here, that little mark right there is lining up with a number.
10:00Right.
10:00This number here is 50.
10:01That's your first number.
10:03It's 50.
10:0450.
10:04And this one is?
10:0650.
10:07They set one number on everything.
10:0850, 50, 50.
10:0950, 50, 50.
10:10So basically, you're sitting on 50, 50, and 50.
10:13So you got one number.
10:14When you're done with this thing, we'll set a different combination in it.
10:18But this ring is loose.
10:19We have to tighten all that up.
10:21Tighten that up.
10:22This is bent.
10:23So we'll straighten this out.
10:25So I'll take this step back with me.
10:26I'll get to work on them.
10:27I'll clean them up as best I can.
10:28We'll get them all working.
10:29But this lock is going to take some work.
10:31Right.
10:36What is that?
10:37Can I drive that?
10:38That is drivable, yes.
10:40Ron and I are checking out a local collector's stash.
10:42So far, we found a cool coffee grinder that we may be able to restore for a profit.
10:46And the search continues.
10:47Yes, I want to drive it.
10:49That's an old Zelda Shriner parade car.
10:53It's from the early 70s.
10:54It has the original Briggs & Stratton engine on it.
10:57It's got forward and reverse.
10:58To have reverse in these is really unique.
11:00I'll bet you can't even fit in there.
11:02I bet you I could.
11:03Oh, yeah.
11:04Your jeans too tight?
11:05Don't rip them.
11:06A little tight in the pants.
11:08That goes on you.
11:09Word.
11:10The best thing about this is turning radiuses.
11:12They're pretty awesome.
11:13Because they do this in parades.
11:15So they turn, they zip around.
11:16These are pretty flippin' cool.
11:18Now, sellability, whether we can restore it and renovate the seller.
11:20We don't need to sell it because I'm keeping it for myself.
11:23With the horn.
11:25I'm totally digging this parade car.
11:27I don't know if there's any kind of market for this thing,
11:29but I can definitely see Brett Lee and I cruising around the shop in this thing.
11:33So, what do you have on this?
11:35I would need to get $400 on this.
11:40That would probably be more in the $175 range, to tell you the truth.
11:46Yeah, I would have to do a little better than that.
11:48All right, so are you going to look around some more?
11:49Have more to show us?
11:50Yeah, I have lots more to show you.
11:52Right on.
11:52I'm keeping the hat.
11:53All right, you are not keeping that hat.
11:56Back here, guys, I got something that I know you're going to love.
11:59It's a tool sharpening instrument.
12:01Uh-huh.
12:02You sit on it and pedal it, and the stone turns around, and you sharpen your tools.
12:071800s, probably?
12:08Uh, early 1800s, yeah.
12:10Oh, yeah.
12:10I see you like that.
12:14Pedal, man, pedal!
12:19You struck me on the wrong side.
12:20Yeah, you are.
12:21I want to double find him.
12:24It didn't work for .
12:25It was a crack in the stone.
12:26How much?
12:27Uh, $250.
12:31Um, I don't really know what it's worth.
12:34Um, maybe we can put a package thing together.
12:37This, that's what I'm sure.
12:38Sure, let's find him.
12:38Look at you, Mr. Picker.
12:39Look at me going.
12:40Look at you.
12:41All right.
12:41Package deals are always a win-win.
12:43We can get more stuff for a better price, and the seller can get rid of more junk and make
12:48more money.
12:48It's just about finding that sweet spot that we can both be happy with.
12:52So you ready to make some deals?
12:54Uh, yeah.
12:55Yeah, let's talk.
12:56Do we like the, uh, coffee grinder?
12:57Do you love the car?
12:58Oh, bless.
12:59And the, uh, the tool sharpener.
13:01Sure.
13:01Your price is $8.25 on all of them.
13:03We would love to get all of them for $5, to tell you the truth.
13:07High is a little low.
13:09Uh, $6.25.
13:13Okay.
13:14That's good.
13:15Mm-hmm.
13:15Yep.
13:15Yep, $6.25.
13:16$6.25.
13:17Yep, that's what you're on.
13:18Absolutely.
13:18All right.
13:18Thank you, Marty.
13:19Ron and Tyler tried to get me down a little bit lower than I wanted to go, but I think
13:24we're
13:24both walking away happy.
13:26I have some money in my pocket.
13:27They have some great items to restore.
13:31Coming in hot.
13:34We're good.
13:41We're restoring an egg candler for a customer.
13:43Brett Lee's going to bead blast all the rust and old paint off.
13:46Robert is rebuilding the base out of wood, and Dave is rewilding the broken pieces on the
13:51scale back together.
14:07You guys are back?
14:08Oh, yeah.
14:09All right.
14:10Do you have anything good?
14:11Let me see.
14:11Ready.
14:15This thing is really cool.
14:16It's a star mill.
14:17It's a good brand.
14:18Very popular.
14:19Do you like it?
14:20Yeah, it's awesome.
14:22It's a great find.
14:23What else you got?
14:24It's a little car.
14:26What is this?
14:27Is this a...
14:28It's a Shriner's car.
14:29Is it really?
14:30A Shriner's car?
14:30Yeah.
14:30It looks like it.
14:32Wow, it's got a little Briggs and Stratt motor in it.
14:36A Briggs and Stratt motor.
14:37What this thing is, is actually a replica of a Model T, and they would run them in parades
14:41and stuff like that.
14:42They're very cool.
14:43Tell me about this thing.
14:44Oh, what's the toe?
14:46You should be wearing your shoes.
14:48Keen Cutter.
14:49Man, this thing is rickety.
14:51I mean, this thing's like wasted.
14:52This has got a huge crack in it.
14:54Not bad?
14:55Bad?
14:55It won't ever work.
14:57This is sandstone.
14:58I mean, sure, we can restore the outside and everything, but we cannot restore the rock.
15:03Who's going to buy it with a big crack with some kind of, you know, epoxy in it, you know?
15:07Quite honestly, this thing is yard art.
15:10I mean, those two, I think you did great on.
15:13I think we probably can get buyers for that.
15:14This thing here, it's cool, but we don't need stuff that looks cool.
15:18We need stuff that makes us money, that we know that we can make a profit off.
15:22Otherwise, I mean, you guys did really good.
15:27Woo!
15:28Woo!
15:28Woo!
15:30That's pretty weird.
15:31We're in the final stages of the Egg Candler project.
15:35The body was originally a dark green color, which I want to keep, but we're going to paint
15:39the bottom of it a bright yellow, so this thing really pops.
15:43As soon as the paint dries, Ted's going to put on all the new graphics that he recreated,
15:48and Kyle is going to start reassembling this thing.
15:51This thing is going to look awesome, and I really hope it brings back very fond memories
15:56of her and her family's farm.
16:01Hey, good to see you.
16:03Good to see you again.
16:04What's going on?
16:05I'm excited to see about my Egg Candler, what you've done to it.
16:08I want you to stand over here.
16:09All right.
16:10I'll move the forklift.
16:11Okay.
16:15Oh, wow.
16:18What do you think?
16:19That doesn't even look like the Egg Candler I brought in.
16:21I didn't expect it to look that shiny and that spectacular as it did.
16:25It just looks wonderful with the two colors.
16:29Rick, it really looks amazing.
16:30What is it that you did to it?
16:32We did a little everything.
16:33You know, we took this piece out, pounded all the dents out, sanded it all off, and put
16:37a really good paint job in it.
16:39Wow.
16:39This thing all came apart.
16:40Our artist, Ted, went and did all this decal.
16:42He matched the exact same one that you had.
16:44Wow.
16:44Rick, everything just looks amazing, but my question is, does it really work, because
16:48you know, I'm wanting to use it.
16:50That's right.
16:51Well, I guess we can give her a shot.
16:53I can show you and see if it works.
16:54All right.
16:55I never stuck anything on there yet.
16:57Why don't you come with me?
16:58Okay.
16:59Come on over here.
17:01Okay.
17:01Let's get this ready.
17:03Okay.
17:04Good egg.
17:05I want to show this.
17:06I want this totally dark.
17:07All right.
17:08Here we go.
17:09Don't let me trip on you.
17:11Three, two, one.
17:14Yes.
17:15It works.
17:18Very cool.
17:19That's a good egg.
17:20That's a good egg.
17:22After we got in there and Rick turned on the egg handler, I was like, you know,
17:25I was really excited to see that it does work, because I am planning to use it.
17:28Rick, everything looks wonderful.
17:30You love it?
17:30I love it.
17:31I'm really happy with it.
17:32Perfect.
17:33Let's go in and we'll take care of the rest of the paperwork.
17:35Okay.
17:43We've got to see if we can get this dial on it.
17:48That's, yeah, that's good.
17:50Awesome.
17:50That thing is just an absolute.
17:52That's a work of art.
17:53We've been working on a cannonball safe for a while now.
17:56This thing is beautiful, and we just got this super complicated lock all figured out.
18:01I can't wait to see the customer's reaction on this thing.
18:09Hey.
18:10Hey.
18:10Dane, how you been?
18:11Good.
18:12Good.
18:12Michelle?
18:13We came down to Rick's Restorations today to pick up our cannonball safe that we purchased
18:17that we had him restore.
18:18So you guys excited?
18:19Oh, yeah.
18:20Definitely.
18:20I can't wait for you to see it.
18:21All right.
18:22Come on.
18:22It's over here.
18:23Let's go see it, kiddo.
18:24When we first saw it, it was really dinged up, banged up.
18:27So I'm excited to see how it came out.
18:30You remember how ugly it was?
18:32Yeah.
18:32Remember how it used to look?
18:33It had a lot of dings and nicks.
18:34You know, it was sort of, you know, it wasn't attractive.
18:37I can't wait to show you this.
18:38It's super cool looking.
18:40Let's see it.
18:40You ready?
18:41Ready.
18:42Here we go.
18:43One, two, three.
18:45Whoa!
18:48Look at that, kiddo.
18:49Look at cow.
18:50It's cool.
18:51When Rick pulled off the cover, that color just popped so well.
18:55It was just like, wow.
18:57So, Rick, how did you get it to look so good?
19:00Well, we ended up hand sanding the whole thing to give it that really, really smooth finish.
19:05I mean, it's like glass.
19:07Yes.
19:07Can we open it?
19:08Well, you know the combination yet?
19:10No.
19:11Oh.
19:11Yeah, we can open it.
19:12I'll open it for you.
19:16Can we hear a click?
19:17Sure.
19:18Yeah.
19:19There you go.
19:23Whoa, that's sweet.
19:24Is that cool?
19:25Yeah.
19:26Looks good in there, huh?
19:28Oh, it's working.
19:30Wow.
19:30See the little timers in there?
19:31All the three clocks?
19:32You can wind the clocks.
19:33And what you do is you can set them for different times of the day, whenever you want to get
19:36into
19:37it.
19:37But that's the only time you can get into it.
19:39Wow.
19:39We purchased the safe because we had a break-in in our house, and one of the things that
19:44got stolen was Dane's coin collection.
19:46And so we wanted something to keep all our valuables in.
19:49Check it out.
19:49I've been keeping one of my prized possessions in here until you got here.
19:53This is my book, my collection of pennies when I was your age.
19:58Wow.
19:59Look at that.
20:00So it took me years to get these pennies.
20:03Is that cool?
20:04That's cool.
20:04You see these three pennies there?
20:06Yeah.
20:06Yeah, those are steel pennies.
20:08You know why they're steel?
20:09World War II, they needed all the copper to go overseas and build bombs and build all
20:14kinds of stuff.
20:14So they made them all out of steel.
20:16And in America, you could only get a steel penny that year.
20:19It was the only year.
20:20So it's really, really collectible.
20:21So here, this is what I want to do, is I want to give you one of mine to get
20:26you started
20:26in your collection.
20:27I want you to start again.
20:29I don't want you giving up.
20:30Okay?
20:30Wow.
20:31Thanks.
20:32You all right with that?
20:33All right.
20:33But it'll be safe now, right?
20:36Yeah.
20:36Got a good place to put it?
20:37I think it was pretty cool that Rick gave one of his pennies to Dane so that Dane could
20:41actually start his own collection again.
20:43And we feel confident that pretty much everything's going to be safe in there.
20:47Thank you, buddy.
20:48Let's go in the office.
20:48We'll take care of the rest of the paperwork, and then we'll figure out how we're going
20:50to load that thing.
20:54All right, Ron.
20:55If we can't find a buyer for this thing, I want to ride it.
20:57That's all I want to do sends us on.
20:59I'm good with that.
21:00Ready?
21:00Yeah.
21:02Oh, crap.
21:03All right.
21:03Just push me.
21:04Let's go.
21:06Dude, we're going live.
21:07Coming in fierce.
21:11You are the crappiest driver I think I've ever seen.
21:15Robin's racist.
21:15If you'd have honked, that thing would have moved.
21:19Whoo!
