00:30So, let's get started.
00:33The first of the three startups is a company from Italy.
00:38And they have a really, really neat new vehicle design,
00:43which literally delivers the driver to their door,
00:49even if they live in an apartment.
00:52Here to tell you more is Nicolas from ItalDesign to talk about Climb E.
01:02Hi, everybody.
01:04Nice to meet you all.
01:04I'm Nicolas Vinci, and I'm Innovation Manager in ItalDesign,
01:08that's a design and engineering company based in Turin, northern Italy.
01:13We've been founded 55 years ago by the Designer of the Century,
01:17Mr. Giorgetto Giugiaro, and an engineer, Aldo Mantovani.
01:21And the combination of a creative mind with a more practical one of an engineer
01:26was able to create a really great place to work that's called ItalDesign.
01:31Today, I'm going to present you a mobility vision we developed during the past year and a half.
01:37We presented it to, in the CS in Las Vegas show in January 2023, this year.
01:42And we brought it also here in Europe to the Vivatec,
01:45and it's possible for you to visit it in the mobility corner exactly at the end of this path.
01:53But basically, I would like to tell you also a story.
01:56That's a story of mobility projects.
01:58And we've been always asking us a lot of questions.
02:02And the first question we ask ourselves is dated 1976 with the New York taxi project.
02:11The question was, how we can shorten the dimension of vehicles,
02:17putting inside always the same number of people, the same number of luggage,
02:22and doing the same job of another kind of vehicle.
02:24The upper left picture really describes this challenge,
02:28because the New York taxi was a challenge launched by the MoMA in New York,
02:33the Museum of Modern Art.
02:34And we were able to put in a vehicle length just four meters,
02:38the same amount of people and the same amount of luggage that before
02:41were possible just to be put just in a vehicle length of a length of six meters.
02:49You can understand that reducing of about two meters,
02:52the dimension of a New York taxi is really helpful,
02:55especially in such crowded cities.
02:59The second question we asked ourselves was,
03:02how we can better exploit the interior of the vehicle
03:07to give more comfort to the occupants,
03:09and especially focusing more on comfort and ergonomics
03:14than on style and performance.
03:16And here is where the Lancia Mega Gamma was born.
03:20This was a concept, I know maybe it's not the best concept you've ever seen in your life,
03:24but it was dated 1978 and it was the first monovolume ever designed by Mr. Giorgetto Giugiaro.
03:32And the idea here was if we bring the entire powertrain,
03:36the fuel tank, the spare wheel and all the mechanical stuff in the platform,
03:41we will have a flat floor and nothing else.
03:45So the interior of this vehicle is enormous, it's huge.
03:49And actually, this was the very first monovolume ever designed.
03:53I would say that if we see the automotive market today,
03:57let me say, this was one challenge in my opinion,
03:59but I let you decide.
04:02The third question we asked ourselves in the mobility world was,
04:08but if I can use the same platform for multiple purposes vehicles,
04:13how this can be realized?
04:16Exactly this way.
04:18So if we put all the drive shaft, the driving wheel, the wheels, the tank,
04:23all the transmission in the lower platform,
04:27I can do practically whatever I want with the upper part.
04:31That's where the multipurpose vehicle came from.
04:36Actually, this is one of the first examples of capsule,
04:40and indeed that's the name, capsula,
04:43that can be transformed into whatever you need.
04:45So we have the ambulance one, we have the road assist,
04:49we have the school bus, we have the firemen vehicle.
04:56It can be adapted to whatever need you may have.
05:00And actually, this question brought them to another question.
05:04How we can adapt a vehicle to be fully sustainable?
05:09So we made this electric vehicle for the city of Turin,
05:12and how it can be inclusive?
05:15So the question in 1992 was how can I bring a wheelchair inside a vehicle?
05:22So with this question, we came up with this solution,
05:25and I said it was more than 30 years ago now.
05:31We jumped then to 2017 and 2018.
05:35Here the challenge was a little bit higher.
05:37So we wanted to let a car fly,
05:41and we actually developed our pop-up.
05:44It was in 2017,
05:46and we launched this challenge and this vision
05:49in the Geneva Motor Show in 2017.
05:51It was really a great success.
05:54It was so great that Airbus and Audi,
05:57that's our mother company,
05:58wanted to further develop the project with us,
06:01and we developed a second version
06:03that was called Pop-Up Next,
06:05and we realized a scale model,
06:07one to four scale model,
06:08that actually flowed in the Amsterdam drone week.
06:12So actually, we made it fly.
06:15It was not just a pure design job
06:18used for this kind of events.
06:20We realized a working prototype of this object.
06:25Now, the challenge was,
06:28let me say,
06:28it was also quite,
06:30there were many technical constraints
06:33to realize a flying vehicle
06:34back in 2017,
06:36and still today.
06:37The autonomy,
06:38the battery,
06:38the weight,
06:39there were really,
06:40really many constraints.
06:41So we step back a little bit,
06:43and we ask ourselves,
06:45how can I exploit
06:46the vertical and horizontal mobility
06:48in a more feasible way?
06:51So, the third,
06:53I don't remember,
06:54the fifth question we asked ourselves,
06:56sorry,
06:57was,
06:57how can I exploit the vehicle
06:5924 hours a day,
07:01and not just those two hours
07:02I'm driving from point A to point B?
07:05So,
07:05the answer in this case was,
07:07a car that turns into an elevator,
07:10or an elevator that turns into a car.
07:12And I would like to present this project
07:13by showing you the video
07:15we realized for this project.
07:21We are in this future city,
07:24a great smart city.
07:26You are just now
07:28in your own apartment,
07:30and the vehicle itself
07:31is part of your apartment.
07:33We are using the volume of the vehicle
07:35as an additional room,
07:36as an additional space
07:37that's not wasted anymore,
07:39just parking to a garage
07:41or on the street.
07:42You can use that vehicle
07:43like a study,
07:44like to study,
07:45to watch TV,
07:46to rest,
07:46for whatever purpose you may have.
07:49When,
07:49then,
07:50when you have to go somewhere,
07:51you just book the autonomous kid,
07:53and here,
07:54if you remember,
07:56we are recalling the concept
07:57of the capsule
07:58we developed 30 years ago.
07:59You enter the vehicle,
08:01you select a final destination,
08:03the vehicle that's just parked
08:04on your balcony
08:05in front of your apartment,
08:07then moves with a system
08:09that we,
08:10let me say,
08:11we've been thinking for
08:12for the past last,
08:13for the past year,
08:14together with a big OEM,
08:16a big elevator company,
08:18so it's something really feasible,
08:19it's not
08:21technologically impossible,
08:22and the vehicle at this point,
08:24the elevator,
08:25the capsule,
08:25turns itself into a level 5 autonomous vehicle
08:28that's able to drive you
08:29to your final destination.
08:31I know this may sound crazy,
08:34there are many technological constraints
08:36and regulations
08:37that must be fulfilled,
08:38of course,
08:39but this is a provocation,
08:41this is a challenge
08:41we want to launch
08:42to the mobility market,
08:44and the challenge
08:45is exactly the first dimension.
08:47We must exploit
08:49the volume of the vehicles
08:50for more than one single purpose,
08:53that just moving
08:54and commuting
08:54from point A to point B,
08:56because we are spending money,
08:58material,
08:58also in terms of sustainability,
09:00we are designing
09:01always bigger vehicles
09:02and then stay 20 hours a day
09:04parked in a garage
09:05or parked on the street.
09:08Of course,
09:08these are other provocations,
09:10but let me say,
09:11these are more fantasy
09:12than something else.
09:14Okay,
09:14we can move to the next slide.
09:19Okay,
09:20of course,
09:21the multi-purpose topic
09:23was now here,
09:25has now been recalled also here,
09:27so,
09:29the thinking behind this slide is,
09:31if I'm going to include
09:33in this capsule
09:34many services,
09:35like the dental care,
09:36coffee time,
09:37the DJ set capsule,
09:39the wellness one,
09:40dental care,
09:41the healthcare,
09:42so,
09:42we can have really
09:43many,
09:44many different
09:45configurations for the capsule
09:47and if we have a city,
09:49let's imagine,
09:49that's full of these vehicles,
09:54why 1,000 people
09:55have to walk to the service?
09:57In this case,
09:58it's the service
09:59moving to these different 1,000 people.
10:01Just imagine the dentist
10:02that's moving to any flat
10:05of any person
10:06that's booking this service
10:07and are not anymore
10:08these people
10:09that have to walk
10:10and have to go
10:10to the dentist itself.
10:11Let me say,
10:12also here,
10:13another provocation
10:14for the mobility world,
10:16who knows?
10:18So,
10:18if we now jump
10:20to the next slide,
10:22it's not just
10:23a 3D
10:24or a funny concept,
10:26we actually realized
10:27a concept vehicle
10:28that you can visit
10:30and you can test
10:31in the mobility corner
10:33on booth D60.
10:35so what to say?
10:37Join us,
10:38we are waiting for you
10:38and there's also
10:39a funny mixed reality experience
10:41that you can leave
10:42to immerse yourself
10:43into this futuristic scenario.
10:45So,
10:46thanks a lot for listening
10:47and we're waiting
10:48for you
10:48on booth D60.
10:50D60.
10:51All right,
10:52thanks,
10:53Nicholas.
10:53Yeah.
10:54Excellent.
10:55All right,
10:57time for a couple
10:57of questions,
10:58I think.
10:58Yeah,
10:59I think it makes sense.
11:00questions from anyone?
11:04Don't be shy,
11:05don't be shy.
11:07So,
11:07it's interesting,
11:08so obviously,
11:08I mean,
11:09initially looking at the project,
11:11it's like,
11:11okay,
11:11so this is something
11:12that for individual homeowners
11:14to have a bit more flexibility,
11:16but actually then you started
11:17to go into this
11:18other use case scenario.
11:19So,
11:19for example,
11:20people providing services,
11:21prestations,
11:22they come to the house,
11:24so you talked about dentists,
11:26potential doctors as well,
11:27although,
11:28let's be honest,
11:29we still need more doctors
11:31and dentists,
11:31right,
11:31so,
11:32you know,
11:33I mean,
11:33it's not going to work
11:34if there's not enough dentists,
11:35right?
11:36I know,
11:36clear,
11:36clear.
11:37All this provocation,
11:38then we try to include
11:41in one single vehicle
11:42many challenges
11:43that the mobility
11:44must face
11:45in the next years.
11:46Of course,
11:46not all of them
11:47can find an answer
11:49in this particular vehicle,
11:50but we really hope
11:51that maybe
11:52in a couple of years
11:53we can find
11:54the first working prototype
11:54that's able to show
11:56the potentiality
11:57of this vehicle
11:58and
11:59at that time
12:00we will understand
12:01also if this topic
12:02of the service to people
12:03is actually something
12:05worth
12:06for developing it
12:07or not,
12:07let me say.
12:08Taxi drivers?
12:09Taxi drivers,
12:10why not?
12:11Yeah,
12:11also.
12:11Or are these people
12:12sharing it?
12:12I don't know.
12:13Yeah,
12:14any questions from you guys?
12:15Yeah.
12:17I'll take your mic.
12:17Oh,
12:18we have a...
12:20Yeah,
12:21just a simple question.
12:23What's the reason
12:24of separating the top part
12:25and the bottom part?
12:26I cannot hear you
12:27very well,
12:27honestly.
12:28stick right into the mic,
12:29right into it.
12:30Good.
12:31What's the reason
12:32of separating
12:33the top part
12:34and the bottom part?
12:36Because anyhow,
12:37in a world
12:37that's always speaking
12:38about sharing,
12:39in my eyes,
12:40there will be always
12:41a niche of people
12:42that will like
12:43to own their own space,
12:44their own vehicle.
12:45In this vision
12:46of exploiting
12:48the space of the vehicle
12:4924 hours a day,
12:51you cannot think
12:51to share that part
12:52of your home,
12:53let me say.
12:54So,
12:54we are just sharing
12:55the platform
12:57that's able to give you
12:58the possibility
12:59to go around the city,
13:01but the upper part
13:02is fully customizable.
13:04You own it
13:05and you
13:07found it
13:07in front of your apartment.
13:09so that's the reason
13:10of the separation.
13:12Thank you.
13:13Thank you.
13:13All right.
13:14Thanks.
13:16Any other questions?
13:21So, yeah,
13:21just I'll touch
13:22on the infrastructure
13:22of it
13:23because we spoke
13:23about that yesterday.
13:26listening to what you said
13:27yesterday,
13:28actually,
13:28the only infrastructure
13:29obviously from building
13:30the units themselves
13:31is making sure
13:32that every new construction
13:33has the capacity
13:36to lift it,
13:37right?
13:37And that's it.
13:38Yeah, exactly.
13:40So,
13:40at the end,
13:41that's the only
13:42technological constraint
13:43and that's why,
13:45so,
13:45to be honest,
13:47we cannot think
13:48to see this object
13:49in historical city center
13:50like we have here
13:51in Europe.
13:52We are,
13:52of course,
13:52targeting newborn cities,
13:54especially in Middle East,
13:56East,
13:57so they are practically
13:58designing city
14:00from scratch.
14:01so there are
14:02big challenges
14:03to be solved there.
14:04There are many people
14:04who are interested
14:05in using new means
14:06of transportation.
14:08Why not?
14:09Why we cannot see
14:13a part of the city
14:14just served
14:15by these means
14:15of transportation
14:16and all the buildings
14:18served by these
14:18kind of vehicles?
14:19Who knows?
14:20Okay,
14:21we'll leave it there.
14:22It's a vision,
14:23so thank you very much.
14:23It's a vision.
14:23So, Nicolas
14:24from Ital Design
14:25and Climb E.
14:27Thanks a lot
14:28and we wait for you
14:29at stage T60.
14:31Booth D60.
14:34Thanks.
14:35I'll take the mic.
14:36I'll take it.
14:38Thank you.
14:39Thank you.
14:40Thank you.
