00:01Stargazing again, Fimbo.
00:04I don't know what I'm gazing at, but it's certainly not stars.
00:08Petra, enlarge sector seven.
00:10Petra, main telescope on quadrant K-84.
00:16Petra, estimated time of interception of object in K-84.
00:21On present course and velocity, we'll intercept in 6.35 hours.
00:58Petra!
00:59Petra, Maximum Magnification and Image Enhancement.
01:02I don't know how we missed it. It's only just over six hours away.
01:05We're almost on top of it.
01:07There's very little reflective light for the scanners to pick up on.
01:10Well, surely it's just part of the plasma we passed through.
01:12I don't think so.
01:13Well, it obviously has different characteristics.
01:16Can't we just go round it?
01:17Oh, no. That's a vast area of space. Days out of our way.
01:21Let's find out exactly what we're dealing with.
01:23Maintain course for now, Victoria.
01:27Right. I thought we could have a quiet word here away from the public gaze.
01:30Sit down, Anna.
01:32Now, the final result, immutable and binding,
01:35is 27 for Fiona and six for Anna.
01:38But I had seven.
01:39Rigging the vote. Two of all people.
01:41I didn't.
01:42No-one's saying you did, Anna. It was Fimbo.
01:45Fimbo?
01:45Yes. It seems he somehow managed to vote without having the right to,
01:49so I've disqualified him.
01:50Oh, well, that settles that.
01:53I want to re-vote. It can't be right.
01:5527 to 6? I thrashed you, Anna.
01:58Anyone can win on a lot of promises that they aren't going to keep.
02:02Oh, let's face it, Anna. You've either got it or you haven't.
02:05And you haven't.
02:06Oh, yeah?
02:07Yeah.
02:07OK, stop it, the two of you. Now, that's the result and it's final.
02:11And I don't want a word of this other business getting out
02:13until I've spoken to Fimbo. Promise.
02:18Fimbo did what?
02:20But winning isn't everything, Anna. Oh, exactly.
02:23The important thing is you gave Fiona a bit of competition.
02:26Yeah, it made her promise all that stuff that we can hold her to.
02:28Should be sorry she ever volunteered.
02:30And you did get seven votes.
02:32Six.
02:34Well, blame all the people who didn't bother voting.
02:36Yeah, electropathy. The downfall of true democracy.
02:39You're a cheer up, Anna. Come on, smile.
02:42Oh, it would have been such an honour to be on the student council.
02:46Well, still, there's always next year.
02:48You're a good sport, Anna.
02:50Yeah, that's me.
02:51Anyway, who wants to go to all those boring committee meetings?
02:54Only for a term.
02:56And it looks great on your CV when you're applying for jobs.
02:59Yeah, I didn't think of that.
03:00I'll get you a coffee.
03:06Plasma is unpredictable stuff.
03:09You weren't worried before.
03:12While it remains a cloud of ionised gas, it's harmless enough.
03:15It's when it becomes organised and combines the properties of a solid
03:18with the instability of a gas.
03:20That's when it's dangerous.
03:22This thing certainly appears to be structured.
03:25And then luminescent.
03:27What's that suggest to you?
03:29Extended ionic bonding using high-energy electron levels.
03:33Let's see if we're right.
03:35Okay.
03:36First, flash it up with a laser and get an optical decay spectrum.
03:40Then try a high-frequency radio pulse.
03:43And secondly, we'll need an extrapolation of its total magnetic flux from local readings.
03:47At this distance?
03:48I think you'll be surprised.
03:51Um, shouldn't the photomultiplier be recalibrated for such low-light emissions?
03:57Yes.
03:57Yes, of course you're right.
03:59Why don't you take a break?
04:02Would you mind?
04:03No.
04:04I'll give Philippe a call if I need any help.
04:06Go and see how Mercedes is.
04:08It's so obvious.
04:13Look, Finber, I'm sure you meant well.
04:15I just felt sorry for her.
04:17Then you should have had it on 20 votes.
04:18One wasn't going to make any difference.
04:19Never get away with 20 votes.
04:21Not with Anna.
04:22If you're going to cheat, you might as well cheat properly.
04:24I didn't mean to cheat.
04:26It's just there was this chap at school.
04:28Very muscular, handsome, athletic, lots of friends, lots of money.
04:33Actually, I was rather awkward and gangly when I was young.
04:36Who were?
04:37Anyway, no-one would stand against him, but the teacher wanted a candidate, so she volunteered me.
04:42Ah, a teacher's pet, were you?
04:43No.
04:43I bet you always sat at the front, though, and asked earnest questions just as the bell rang.
04:48Certainly not.
04:49Didn't you even get one vote, Finbo?
04:51I just hate things where there has to be a winner and a loser.
04:55So you didn't want Anna to be humiliated?
04:58Oh, well.
04:58I'll try and cover it up and save you from a cell-on moon station.
05:01And look, thanks for doing the cosmology lecture.
05:03We're so short-staffed these days.
05:05And Professor Brelin's mind is obviously on other things.
05:07Nice to have a chance to share my passions.
05:10In-in space, Rebecca.
05:14Oh, Professor Brelin?
05:15Yes, Miss Tancy.
05:17Are you going to see Miss Ailes?
05:19As I am perfectly fitted healthy, there's hardly any other reason for my frequenting Medicom is there.
05:23Only they won't let me in.
05:24Quite rightly so.
05:26Well, I just want to sit next to her.
05:27I wouldn't make a sound.
05:28I'm sure she'll be touched to hear of your concern.
05:30Well, then she's out of danger.
05:32She is making steady progress.
05:34I pray for her, you know.
05:36I don't read well about that sort of stuff for myself, but I thought, well, if God's listening,
05:39he might listen to a voice he hasn't heard in a while rather than someone who prays all the time
05:42about every little thing.
05:42Well, I'm no expert in divine justice.
05:44I just want to be like Miss Ailes.
05:46When you grow up, then I suggest you apply your energies to your studies, Miss Tancy, not to hero worship.
05:52Isn't Captain Lewis giving a lecture about now?
05:55Fine.
05:58Open.
06:00As we move into relatively uncharted regions of space, many of you will have observed at first hand the plasma
06:06cloud that we encountered earlier.
06:08We're now approaching another feature of the H2 plasma region we're in, which we're still, which we are still trying
06:16to identify.
06:20He was a good principal, but more importantly, a good friend to everyone.
06:25He will be greatly missed.
06:36Rebecca.
06:37Oh, I love Anna.
06:39It's funny to think his coffin will flood forever.
06:44Anyway, what are you up to?
06:46It's not like you to miss one of Fimbo's lectures.
06:48Oh, it's cosmology.
06:49I don't have to go.
06:51Rebecca, I was thinking it would be good manners of me to thank all the people that voted for me.
06:56I think it would be polite.
06:58How are you going to know who they are?
07:00Well, that's what I'm trying to figure.
07:01There's Victoria.
07:02She seconded me.
07:03Daniel nominated me, but I think he voted for Fiona.
07:06There's Belinda, of course, and Kevin McNally.
07:08But who are the other two?
07:09I think it must have been Philippe and Jim.
07:12They are such nice boys.
07:14What do you think?
07:15Well, I think maybe you ought to send out a general message by Autosec.
07:19Just to say something like you enjoyed competing and thank everyone for giving you a chance.
07:23But I'd love to know who the other people were.
07:25Just think I might have a secret admirer.
07:29I thought I'd ask Fimbo to get into Petra and find out.
07:32Oh, no.
07:33Fimbo's got himself into enough trouble on your behalf.
07:36So, who knows?
07:38Our survey of Achilles G-33 may well prove that this group of asteroids came from a solar system beyond
07:43our own.
07:44Captured by Arsene's gravity after a million year journey from whatever cosmic explosion set them wandering.
07:52Thank you very much.
08:00Captain Lewis?
08:01Hmm?
08:02I just wanted to say thanks.
08:05I could listen to you for hours.
08:06You make space sound so romantic.
08:08It is.
08:09Beautiful and very violent.
08:11Do you really think Achilles G-33 came from another star?
08:14I don't see why not.
08:16The skies are littered with interstellar debris.
08:18Think how many comets we see each year.
08:20Where do they come from?
08:21Where are they going?
08:21Hmm.
08:22We're very lucky, aren't we?
08:23To be in a ship that goes to New Worlds.
08:25To encounter these things for ourselves first hand.
08:27Very lucky.
08:29How's Mercedes?
08:30A bit groggy.
08:31Still demanding to know what's happening up in Comsem.
08:34Hard to keep anything from her.
08:35How's Mercedes?
08:37I didn't realize she had such a large and loyal fan club.
08:39Well, she had a lot of admirers on Moon Station.
08:42You're a lucky man, Charles.
08:44Am I?
08:44Many have tried.
08:46That is something I seem doomed never to forget.
08:51How long till we reach it?
08:543.4 hours.
08:56Petra, get me Victoria Frobisher.
08:59Yes.
09:00How's it going?
09:01I'm analyzing the data now.
09:03We'll get it up to me as quickly as possible.
09:04Yeah, will do.
09:06No way.
09:08Assistant social secretary or something.
09:10Over my dead body.
09:11I won.
09:12It's not like she even came close.
09:13It would mean a lot to Anna.
09:14She's never won anything.
09:16Except her scholarship here.
09:17She never stops reminding everybody.
09:18She's trying hard to be a good loser,
09:20but you can see how disappointed she is.
09:22I'm sorry, Bex.
09:23The majority have made their choice.
09:25Oh, come on.
09:26Look, just to help you out.
09:27No decision making.
09:28The last thing I want is Anna Bergani running around behind me
09:31full of bright ideas.
09:33It would make you look magnanimous.
09:35Since when have I been concerned with appearances?
09:40Mr Lewis.
09:41I'm surprised they let you anywhere near the college
09:44considering the rumors that are going around.
09:46What rumors?
09:47A serious misuse of the captain's computer override privileges.
09:51Tampering with the result of a college election.
09:53A very serious matter, Mr Lewis.
09:55Yes, well, I talked to Miss Harvey about it.
09:57Does that make it all right, Mr Lewis?
09:59No harm done, apparently.
10:01The trouble is I don't see how we can avoid the matter getting out.
10:03A captain must be beyond reproach.
10:07I can see it now.
10:09Emblazoned across the headlines of the Melbourne press,
10:12blackening the Lewis family name.
10:14To throw so much away just for a woman.
10:17An overwhelming infatuation.
10:20Is your only defense.
10:23Oh, I see.
10:24Yes.
10:26Minutes are now open.
10:27First student council meeting, second quarter.
10:30Thank you, Petra.
10:31Right.
10:32Before we start, I'd just like to say that I think it's about time the student council made a difference
10:36in this place.
10:37Here, here.
10:38Who gets the best facilities on this ship?
10:40Deedalus.
10:40The postgrads.
10:41The crew.
10:41It's about time the student's got a look in.
10:43I agree.
10:44Point of order.
10:44Has agenda been logged?
10:46Petra, list agenda.
10:48One, elections.
10:49Two, syllabus revisions.
10:52Three, financial report.
10:53Four, entertainments report.
10:55Five, any other business.
10:57Agenda agreed?
10:59Agreed.
10:59Agreed.
11:00Right.
11:00The elections.
11:01I'd like to put it on record that I'm far from happy with the way things are run and by
11:05the blatant corruption that has since been revealed.
11:07And I'd like to make a suggestion.
11:09I think Anna Bergani should be co-opted to the council as assistant social secretary.
11:15What?
11:15When we find someone as keen and enthusiastic as she is, we can't afford to turn her away.
11:20Well, what do you think, Fiona?
11:22Oh, er, I don't think she'd want to be co-opted.
11:26Well, at least let's ask her.
11:27Shall we vote?
11:28Er, do you mind?
11:29Sorry.
11:31Right, shall we vote?
11:37Agreed then.
11:38Shall we see what Anna has to say?
11:41Well, Victoria, what have you got for us?
11:43Well, that's interesting.
11:45The spectrum shows the characteristics of an organised solid structure with molecules in a lattice.
11:50But the intermolecular distances are more like those you'd expect to find in a gas.
11:54So what's holding it together?
11:55Some sort of extended ionic dipolar bonding.
11:58The alignment of the ions is generating the incredibly powerful magnetic field.
12:02A supercooled conductive macroplasma, which has existed in a state of unstable equilibrium for millions of years.
12:09And then along we come.
12:12What could happen?
12:13Nothing, one hopes.
12:14Why should you choose this moment to break up?
12:16Because life's like that.
12:18In my experience.
12:19Our own magnetic field could disturb the dipolar bonding and cause energy surge.
12:24Like a lightning discharge.
12:25That could short-circuit a lot of our vital systems.
12:27At the worst, it would cause positive feedback.
12:30An implosion of the entire structure into which the ship could be sucked.
12:34Frozen.
12:35Trapped for a million years.
12:37Or two.
12:38We'd better change course, no matter how long it takes.
12:40No, no.
12:41We've entered its magnetosphere at consensus already.
12:44The force of the engines going to full burn could be fatal.
12:47How long till closest contact?
12:49Closest point of contact, 153 minutes.
12:52Right.
12:53I suggest a comms blackout until further notice.
12:56Shut down all non-essential systems, minimize use of the electrics.
13:01If the thing so much as quivers in our direction, we have to be ready to go to full burn.
13:04And in the meantime, we play dead.
13:07Very dead indeed.
13:26I bet you put him up to it.
13:27Me?
13:28I wouldn't dream of interfering in student affairs.
13:30Oh, what was it then?
13:31Great minds thinking alike.
13:33Why not?
13:33He's a bright boy and such a nice boy too.
13:38Fiona, isn't it marvelous?
13:39Yeah, well, I'll let you know when I need some help, Anna.
13:43Well, there's the party for when we get back to Pacify.
13:46We'll have to start organizing that soon.
13:47I have all sorts of ideas for that.
13:49We must fill the dome with balloons.
13:51Oh, really?
13:52Original idea, Anna.
13:53Well done.
13:54You think that's a good idea?
13:55Anna, I am the social secretary.
13:58We'll discuss your ideas when I've had a chance to make some plans.
14:01I don't want you running off and organizing anything without checking with me first.
14:04OK?
14:05Yes, Fiona.
14:06You don't rush into these things headlong.
14:07You have to plan them carefully.
14:09Yes, Fiona.
14:09And I don't want any half-baked, amateurish models.
14:11Anything I do is going to be slick and professional.
14:14Assistant social secretary, eh?
14:16Sounds good.
14:17That'll look good on our CV, won't it, Fiona?
14:18Monday at five, we'll write for the next meeting.
14:20Oh, yes, Philippe.
14:21If that's all right with you, Fiona.
14:23You don't have to ask my permission for everything, Anna.
14:27I suppose we can discuss the possibility of using some of your ideas in this terms program.
14:32My vote evenings.
14:32Not that one, no.
14:34Philippe is such a nice boy.
14:36You know, I'm sure he's one of the people that voted for me.
14:39Hey, shall we have a subcommittee meeting in my place tonight?
14:42No, Anna.
14:43Right now, all I want is a very hot shower and a nice evening just pottering around pampering myself.
14:49That sounds like real hard work, if you ask me.
14:52Well, I didn't.
14:56Our closest point of contact to the plasma region is 2,000 kilometers in 22.4 minutes.
15:03All communications cut.
15:05All unessential power systems suspended.
15:07We must prevent electrical on-off surges which generate magnetic fluctuations.
15:12We won't be popular.
15:13Oh, come now.
15:14Is it too much to expect that 60 people sit tight and amuse themselves for an hour or two without
15:18the aid of technology?
15:20Attention, all personnel.
15:22The ilia is now approaching a magnetized macroplasm region, which is giving us something to say.
15:28For this reason, I'm going to have to order as the complete shutdown of electrical systems is possible for the
15:35next hour.
15:36They must be able to fit me in.
15:37You've missed the first session. It started last week.
15:40I don't care.
15:41Anyway, it's for second and third year students who already have EVA 1 and 2.
15:45But how will I get EVA 1 and 2 if I don't do it?
15:47Attention. Please do not use electrical power until further notice.
15:52Well, look, you can do the next course.
15:53Oh, please. I'll catch up. I learn fast.
15:56What's the hurry all of a sudden?
15:58I'm tired of no one taking me seriously.
16:00Mercedes says to be a woman and get anywhere in space exploration, you've got to push yourself harder than the
16:04men.
16:05It's not a game, you know. It's life or death.
16:07Mercedes was nearly killed and poor Lockwood was.
16:10Look, there's nothing wonderful about space. It's alien, hostile and awful.
16:13I'm sorry. I'll ask you about it another time.
16:15No, Gabby. I'm sorry.
16:17Look, I've got rather a lot on my mind lately.
16:20It's fine by me for you to do the EVA course.
16:22As long as Commander Drummond doesn't mind just up to me.
16:26Thanks, Rebecca. I'll talk to you.
16:31You alright?
16:32Yes.
16:34Life goes on.
16:35That's what I keep telling myself.
16:36Attention. Please do not use electrical power until further notice.
16:41Shit, Petra.
16:58Petra, compute time to closest contact.
17:00T-minus 11.34 minutes and closing.
17:05Petra, stop announcements now.
17:08I'm monitoring surface reactions. So far it seems stable.
17:12Let us know of any change, however small.
17:16Why are we whispering? Does starium levels destabilise magnetic fields?
17:21You know, it's fascinating.
17:23Up to now we've only been able to study crystalline structure in microplasms.
17:28Supercooled and trapped in man-made magnetic bottles.
17:31I'm sure Victoria's getting all the readings she can.
17:34Damn!
17:35What's that?
17:35There's a power surge on gantry four.
17:37Can't you be more specific?
17:38Well, I'm getting a localised surge. It's too small to worry about.
17:47There's another circuit being used. Cabin one, gantry four.
17:50Get them.
17:51Using comms?
17:52Split second person to person message.
17:55Petra, transmit to gantry four, cabin one.
18:06One to five.
18:08No answer.
18:09Send a message to the surrounding cabins.
18:17Petra, transmit to gantry four, cabins one to five.
18:20Charles, they're using a tiny amount of power.
18:23It's a matter of discipline, Commander. You ought to know that.
18:48Open!
18:56It's off.
18:57Trouble. The Matrix is destabilised.
19:07It's a flux tube moving towards us.
19:09Can our shields withstand it?
19:11I don't think we should wait to find out. Let's go.
19:13Petra, compute course for full burn.
19:16The new French one, perhaps...
19:17No, you don't understand.
19:17I call that fast work.
19:19No, please.
19:19And you're only half-bring.
19:20Please, you've got the wrong idea.
19:21I'd have changed into something more heavily if I didn't know you were coming.
19:24Well, where's your otise?
19:25What?
19:26Your otise.
19:27Um, I don't know.
19:28And turn off the music.
