00:00is out to the river islands guest line we go for steve kerr presented by great clips in sports
00:05success is about team effort and the same is true for your hair great clips it's going to be great
00:10that's right steve gi santos was on an hour ago and it kind of crushed it so you uh you've got
00:15that act to follow pressure's on him yeah so uh so so here we go and in fact can you can you take
00:22us through uh the embrace that you had with him after the game last night this win this win the
00:29one in phoenix they at least on tv they look like they hit different can you tell us about it
00:35yeah i mean last night was kind of ridiculous i mean that we we played so poorly the phoenix game
00:43i thought we played pretty well uh for much of the night um last night was just awful until the final
00:50eight minutes but we hung in there and you know he uh gi has just been so good um really for a couple
00:58weeks straight every night he's um he's doing so much for us and just so happy for him you know
01:04he's doing he's doing so well and he's really worked his way up from when he first got here and he's in
01:10the g league and he's really made himself into a hell of a player and he can have a long career and
01:16it's just just a lot of fun to see him get the game winner that was the 11th time you guys have
01:21turned it over 20 or more times you've actually won four of those games how did you go about doing it
01:26last night even though the fourth quarter was just a cacophony of turnovers well i our defense
01:33finally kicked into gear the last like six seven minutes and uh we weren't making stops all game
01:39uh partly because we were turning it over and uh i think we finally found the the spirit and the energy
01:46to to kind of get get things right i thought al horford had an incredible night and uh and yeah we
01:53made made just enough big plays down the stretch to to get it done steve take us through that you
01:59know you mentioned the defense doesn't kick in until the final six or seven minutes um i get that there
02:05are aspects to this but i i made the comment earlier i don't know in 13 years if i've ever said
02:13the warrior defense got better when draymond green went off of the floor what what what is it you see
02:19with this particular group and and and what's happening with him you know to not have him in
02:25at the end of games and have the defense kind of tick up well it's a lot different without steve you
02:31know and and um losing steve impacts our offense um in some pretty dramatic ways and it really affects
02:40kind of how how we have to put the five man combo on the floor step it separately negates almost every
02:47spacing issue that we have just because he's that good and it's his uh his shooting and his gravity
02:56everything it means we can play more lineups uh two big lineups that kind of thing but
03:02without steve you know and jimmy of course we're we're struggling to score at times and
03:08we're just finding that we're better off playing one big and and if al is playing like he did last
03:13night or like he did in phoenix down the stretch then we're going to stay with al and and um and
03:19and stay smaller around him so it's uh it's just the way it is right now the game and the team
03:25sort of changes as the season goes along and uh everything everything could be completely different
03:31next week so you just have to kind of roll with it yeah like let's flash forward to next week we
03:37don't know obviously but if and when steph is healthy and porzingis starts to get mixed into all
03:44of that do do you foresee draymond continuing his similar traditional role or could it could it keep
03:52adjusting well i really liked starting dream on and al together um you know when steph was healthy
03:59we did that i think for five or six straight games um and it felt good you know it felt like we had the
04:05the size and the the paint presence to to deal with teams and of course we were still able to
04:12uh to handle handle the offensive side of things because of steph's presence but uh it'll all depend
04:19on on how things shake out um when christophs can play um and what that combination looks like
04:27too you know we're excited to get him out there and we've got to figure out you know can we put him
04:33with with draymond can can al and christophs play together they were great in boston as teammates
04:39as you know in lineup combinations so i imagine that will work but we've we've got some we've got
04:45some uh different options now while you mentioned christops i'm being told that he played some three
04:51on three today what are you seeing from him in terms of his fitness and your wheels are probably
04:57starting to turn on just how you might be able to use him yeah they are and you know one of the
05:02reasons every team wants a space five is because you you don't have to to do a whole lot execution
05:09wise you know you just you can run pick and pops and then the defense has to honor that opens up the
05:15floor opens up driving lanes so it's not like you have to uh you know establish a new offense or or
05:22you know to put in any different you know sets and play calls and stuff it he should be pretty much
05:29plug and play but um yeah he's gonna it's gonna take a little bit of time he played three on three
05:36today he needs to get up and down play full court uh but our training staff feels pretty good about
05:41where he is and and you know the possibility that he'll play next week now are you sure steve because
05:47i don't know if you've ever coached someone tall before do you do you know how to do this
05:52hey if they can shoot yes i i know i know exactly how to okay perfect what in all seriousness we
06:00wanted to run this by you uh david fizzdale came on our show last week and obviously was around
06:05christops when they were in new york together and and this is kind of a take that he had with regard
06:12to how porzingis might fit with you guys coach plays through the bigs i mean all of the stuff that
06:18he runs through draymond he can do through chris staff you know and steve does such a good job of
06:23playing through those guys and utilizing their passing ability the difference with chris staffs
06:28that he adds i think is it's almost like he gives you two dimensions he's a lob threat so when anytime
06:34steph is involved you got a trigger there his ability to catch lobs and pick and pop that's just not
06:40an everyday thing in the nba so you're talking about steph curry coming off of this guy and if you
06:46switch he's a killer so he and steph that duo is gonna be dynamic and it just fits everything that
06:52coach likes to do this kid understands not to hold the ball to play fast one you know point five and
06:59move it he's smart enough to pick up the concepts of when steph's off the ball we're screening for
07:04steph he's just a really bright dude and a hard worker and probably the best part about him i think
07:08all you guys will like is he's a great teammate he's just one of those guys his teammates really
07:12embrace and like what's your reaction to what he just said right there well yeah i mean it's it's
07:19flattering i i you know to to hear coach finsdale speak that way i mean we have always played through
07:25our bigs you go back to andrew bogut and the you know the initial um version of the the team in 14 15
07:32we ran almost everything through him he was such a brilliant passer and lob threat and uh we have
07:40changed over the years i would say we've become much more pick and roll oriented um especially
07:46this this year uh based on personnel but there's a lot we can do uh with porzingis for sure and and uh
07:55i think he's a really good basketball player in terms of his feel um his ability to pass his ability to
08:02to see the floor so uh yeah it's exciting i mean again you you don't you don't really have to
08:08to do a whole lot you just got to get floor spacing and and he knows how to play and that makes it
08:14easy for coaches and easy for the rest of the guys too how much will it be a help to dream on green i'm
08:20looking at last night steve and seven turnovers and it didn't seem like he was that much in a
08:26comfort zone maybe he's playing with guys he doesn't normally play with when you look at the
08:29seven turnovers what are you seeing from dream on green that's different well no staff you know
08:35and and because uh because we have no staff no jimmy and we have a hard time kind of creating
08:41advantages just off the dribble um you know melton can do it um but a lot of you know a lot of pick
08:48and roll and it's a different game without staff and so what happens is we start uh we start pressing
08:53a little bit i think too there's some um fatigue you know the all-star breaks coming everybody needs
09:00it i think dream on needs it uh so that was a tough game i you know keep in mind the previous five or six
09:06games uh he's even more than that i would say he's he's actually taking really good care of the ball i
09:12think last night was a one-off in terms of the uh the turnover so i think he'll get back to uh
09:18tightening things up and um you know the more the more weapons we have with chris stops with uh
09:25with steph uh you know the easier the offensive side of the ball will be for dream on steve kerr is
09:31with us as he is every week on withered and dibs 95 7 the game steve i think you've explained it well
09:37that a lot of this has to do with with steph curry being out but i i'm mindful of the standing
09:43within the organization that draymond has maybe no different than when you started to adjust clay
09:49thompson's role and he mentally was open with struggling with it a little bit is there anything
09:55emotional about the adjusting of draymond's role at all going forward or or or or does he handle that
10:04very well what are those discussions like yeah we we talk all the time and um you know he's he
10:12understands exactly where he is in his career where our team is um we've had really good
10:18conversations about this uh you know about how the last couple years of your career go and and how you
10:25have to adapt and adjust and you know i think all great players have to adapt as they get older and
10:31it means different things for for different people um you go way back and you know magic johnson had to
10:38learn how to shoot and and jason kidd same thing all of a sudden those guys were you know much more
10:43stationary players uh spotting up shooting threes whereas they were you know attacking like crazy
10:49for most of their careers and mj went down to the block and you know shot fadeaways and and uh
10:56you know tim duncan became more of a defensive um stalwart even though he was already a great defender
11:03you know they just the spurs completely shifted their offense um to parker and ginobili and and
11:10and timmy's probably the best example i think of anybody kind of aging gracefully and figuring it out
11:17and going out the right way you know still being effective but acknowledging that he's not as good
11:22and you know i i when i talk about draymond and and you know amongst those names you know it's really
11:30at the defensive end where he's made his mark you know he's uh he's one of the all-time great
11:36defenders hall of fame player um so the game gets harder as you get older and your body aches and
11:42you don't have quite as much energy and and so the the adjustment for dray has to be more subtle um
11:50more in the in the gray areas and things that we talk about on film and it's not going to be as
11:56obvious as it was with those guys but he's got some things that he he knows he has to do in order
12:03to remain effective but it might look a little different than it than it has in the past one of
12:08those things has been guarding a guy who's seven foot five and he'll be in town tomorrow assuming that
12:13the spurs choose to play their players you know back to back you never know but if you have wimby out
12:19there how much is it going to be on draymond to try to contain the big frenchman
12:23well he does as good a job as humanly possible on on wimby yama i mean it's just uh it's such a
12:32incredible challenge between the size and the skill but but also just the the feel um he's really
12:40such a good uh player just with the way he sees the game and his competitiveness and uh our two games
12:48in san antonio uh a couple months back draymond was just incredible and uh you know it's not like
12:54you're going to stop the guy but you just try to make it as difficult as possible draymond's brain
12:59works so quickly you can just see him processing things out there um and it's really really fun to
13:06watch steve this is the first time we've talked to you since the deadline so i i have a couple
13:11questions and first is just kind of your your general reaction to uh to everything that happened
13:17in the way that it went down well i'm thrilled to get uh christoph's you know just the the this
13:25the ability that he has the size of the shot blocking presence and the shooting i mean he's
13:32really a gifted player obviously the whole challenge is to keep him on the floor and so our training
13:37staff knows they've got a good job on their hands but we feel like uh he can he can really open up
13:44the floor for us and uh and change us in a lot of ways so you have to uh you have to be excited about
13:52getting a player of that caliber uh as always with the trade deadline you uh you you miss guys when
13:59when they're gone and and uh to make trades you know you're with guys for years on years and and
14:06every single day and and you grow to love them and then all of a sudden they're gone it's it's really
14:11a bizarre profession in that way and uh i i've said this publicly but buddy healed is probably the best
14:18teammate i've ever seen in my life and um we're gonna miss him the energy that he brings uh the the humor
14:27the joy the love for the game um he was there every day regardless of what was happening with him
14:34and uh he was just he's just a beautiful guy and you know both trace and jk were really well
14:42liked in the locker room guys who have put in a lot of work here over the years and and uh enjoyed
14:49really strong friendships i i like both guys on a personal level quite a bit and um i hope that each
14:56one gets a better opportunity you know then then he was getting here and that's just kind of what the
15:03league is about it's about opportunity and finding the right match and uh uh hopefully those guys will
15:09will find their place one door closes another opens and the door opening for the aforementioned
15:14gee santos but also will richard and pat spencer who gets a a real full contract now were you able
15:21to speak with them and let them know about the opportunity that's now in front of them
15:24of course and and you know pat being on a on a full-time contract is huge i mean this is really
15:32uh the first time in in his career we i think we signed him to uh contract at the end of last year
15:39like literally the last two or three days of the season and that was it so um this is the first time
15:46he's on um you know anything more than a two-way and he's earned it and then some and uh you know
15:53starting out in in our on our g league team and competing for everything uh it's just been an
16:00amazing journey for him and you love coaching guys like that who just have earned everything
16:04worked for everything and compete every night uh past being greater than yeah will uh you know that
16:11his rookie year he's there's been some ups and downs but we really like him he's a smart player he's
16:16great kid um works hard and he's got a lot of a lot of talent so the opportunities will be there
16:23for those guys for sure steve i'm interested in that comment about how odd of an industry it is
16:28especially at trade deadline time and and mindful of the fact that mike dunleavy got a little frustrated
16:35at a press conference over the weekend and uh it's been clear watching warrior basketball that there's
16:40been some tension in in the room you've spoken on it as well and and part of that is just everything
16:46that's pouring out all over social media i'm sure some of it has a shred of truth and some of it has
16:53none but like what what is your reaction to the way the whole picture unfolds now at the nba trade
17:02deadline and how it affects a team well i think social media affects everything i mean when i first started
17:10in the league you know as a as a player social media didn't exist and teams were really able to keep
17:17conversations quiet and that even continued when i was a general manager in phoenix from 2007 to 2010
17:25um you know social media was really just kicking into gear but it was much easier to to have quiet
17:34conversations and trust that they weren't going to get out and now it's impossible i mean
17:39basically the minute you have a conversation with another team it feels like uh you know everyone's
17:45going to know teams have relationships with media guys and they want to you know give them a little
17:52bit of help on some knowledge on some info and and maybe get something back in return and and so it's so
17:59hard to to keep everything buttoned up and then once it's out um and with all the speculation um all the
18:07commentary it it just can can snowball from there and i think that's probably what happened i think
18:14both draymond and mike were were right actually um you know i don't think anything anything ever came
18:22anywhere close uh with draymond being traded but you know with his name being mentioned yes absolutely
18:29so um it's you know two different perspectives for mike it's the frustration of you know all this talk
18:37about i mean day after day like is this draymond's last game you know and mike knowing no like we're not
18:45even close to that so you saw some of that frustration come out with mike and you saw some of the emotion
18:51from draymond too and like i said neither neither guy was wrong it's just kind of the nature of the
18:56the world we live in right now i mean i love that you mentioned your time as a gm and and it's not just
19:02the trade deadline there's there's also what's really taken off this week is people noticing
19:08around the league certain teams are just deciding down the stretch of close games to not play some
19:14of their best players and so there's the there's the tanking conversation and i know you addressed
19:18this earlier today but i we'd love to hear your thoughts on how that gets handled as as a gm and and
19:28do you think the league's got a problem here i've never been a part of the team uh that that was
19:36attempting to do something like that so i i have no idea how the dynamics work i know the league is
19:42extremely concerned about it as they should be i know they're talking about all kinds of different
19:46things um to try to remedy it and it's just it's really difficult because it's the if the ping pong
19:55balls bounce the right way and you end up with with victor wimbanyama or you know tim duncan or
20:01you know whoever anthony edwards it's like everything changes and and individual players are so powerful
20:09in the nba think about what steph curry has meant to the warriors granted he was the seventh pick not the
20:16first or second but you know that you just have a much better chance of getting a transcendent
20:23star at the top of the draft we we all know that and so this dynamic exists um i think there's a lot
20:31of really um intriguing uh proposals and thoughts from the league and from media members and just
20:40observers of how to how to remedy this but no matter how you slice it it's a really really tough issue
20:46are there any of those proposals that you've heard that you like because mark and i have been
20:50doing what we do which is filling time steve and we've been throwing out our ideas and mark's got
20:56the bucket theory and i've got this bell curve thing anything you've heard that kind of uh tickles
21:01your fancy well yeah i mean uh obviously you can't do relegation uh like european soccer but you know
21:11what if you weren't allowed to win the lottery if you're in the last you know three or four teams i don't
21:16know um you know what if what if the odds were completely evened out and uh you know there was
21:25actually incentive to uh to win i you know i there's just there's an answer for all this stuff like
21:32in response right so you know what if you gave that what if you gave the best lottery odds to the uh
21:38the the non-playoff team with the with the best record there you go yeah but but then it's like
21:44all right so you're in it till the last day and you're you know you're just do do three different
21:49teams tank on the last day and try not for them to get the spot like i don't know how this stuff
21:55plays out and it's just it's so complex but i do know that uh the league knows this is a problem
22:04and wants desperately to do something and they are they are searching and they're they're researching
22:11everything and i trust them to to make a good decision and i'm glad i'm not the one making it
22:16i can tell you that speaking of problems what does a married nba coach do when the dunk contest and the
22:23three-point contest go up against valentine's day well it would never even be a problem because i
22:31yeah i would not be watching the dunk contest and three-point contest during my time off unless
22:37stuff or play was in it then i would watch but uh yeah yeah trust me um i on my all-star break
22:44i'm on break i'm on vacation i'm i'm not watching that stuff do you do you know that the super bowl
22:51is on valentine's day next year steve i heard that and uh i couldn't believe it because that's
22:58it's got to be the latest that the super bowl has ever been played and uh it does bring up a lot of
23:04interesting uh dynamics and potential uh relationship issues doesn't it it sure does
23:10that was just that was just kind of a man-to-man thing i wanted to know if you had any wisdom over
23:16there steve i don't i don't maybe uh maybe a really nice gift on sunday morning super bowl
23:22sunday morning you know just uh over the top uh breakfast you know man you just got to handle
23:29your business early and then uh lock in for the game later on i'm gonna sell my wife on valentine's
23:34eve it's a new thing i like that yeah i like that yes let's do it yep um all right steve i hope we
23:42didn't make you uncomfortable by by not asking 13 jonathan kaminga questions if you want to stay
23:47longer we can hang out and do it all good i appreciate it guys okay all right thanks steve we'll
23:55talk to you next week enjoy the break okay all right sounds good thanks guys all right there you
23:59go that's yeah steve kerr uh right here on 95 70 game coming free for the first time since forever
