00:00If you're a Bay Area sports fan, has this decade, and let's go ahead and start it at 2020, I don't want to upset anyone.
00:07Has this decade, quote, not been kind to you?
00:11Here's what I want to say, and I want to say this as calmly as possible, like I want to come from a nice place here.
00:16I get it. I really do.
00:19Especially, we've talked all about that whole age separator thing with the 49ers.
00:25I get it if you're going to come from the perspective of, oof, a lot of close calls, tantalizingly close, very, very frustrating to be so tantalizingly close and not get the full payoff.
00:43I totally get it.
00:45However, I find it to be a very spoiled fan take to say that this decade has, quote, not been kind to the Bay Area sports fan.
00:58This decade, even just starting in 2020, let's just start with the lead story, you have a ring.
01:05Okay?
01:06So that's one.
01:07You already, in five plus years, you have a ring.
01:11So many major cities.
01:13Call your friends in Detroit.
01:14You're talking about the big three sports, basically?
01:17I'm mainly talking about the big three.
01:19There's a little bit of a quirk that'll come in if we bring in hockey, but I'll get to that.
01:23But you have a ring.
01:26Secondarily, your football team has been to two NFC championship games, one Super Bowl, where you went into the overtime against supposedly one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
01:38Again, tantalizingly close and frustrating.
01:41Sure, I get that part of it.
01:42But you have been to two lengthy playoff runs.
01:46And then this year, got to have 12 wins and a playoff win with half of your good players hurt.
01:52So there's that.
01:54Now, your baseball team, largely been disappointing.
01:56You did have the best regular season ever in the history of the organization.
02:04You're also still in the shadow to a degree, like unless you're really young, unless you're 15, and I don't think Sam Ludman is 15.
02:13But unless you're 15, you're in the shadow of a dynasty.
02:16In the shadow of a dynasty.
02:18It's a long shadow now.
02:19That sun is almost getting down the horizon.
02:21Seven rings in the last 15 years in this town.
02:25For baseball.
02:26No.
02:26Oh.
02:27Baseball and basketball.
02:27I'm just talking about the shadow of the dynasty of the Giants.
02:30Okay.
02:31That's a long shadow.
02:32Okay.
02:32But if I take that as a whole, if I just take that, your baseball team's had their best regular season ever.
02:39Your football team has been to two NFC title games and one Super Bowl.
02:43Your basketball team has been on its normal sort of multiple playoff runs.
02:48They've been to the second round two other times, by the way, and also won a championship ring.
02:54And then I could come out of it also from the perspective of just like the players you get to see.
02:58Like there are a lot of markets where it's like, oh, you know, how about Miami?
03:03Who are your stars in Miami?
03:06This town has Steph Curry and Christian McCaffrey.
03:09And you know what I mean?
03:10Like there's largely been an identity to these teams.
03:16So I find my take and my taste that's a little bit of a spoiled fan take.
03:23This is what we did earlier.
03:26Since 2020, if it starts at 2020, how many, and this is just our big three, football, basketball, baseball,
03:35how many major markets can boast more rings than the Bay Area?
03:41More than one.
03:42More than one.
03:42How many markets?
03:45Granny's looking at me with that young guy face of like, I'm so pissed at you right now.
03:48How many markets can boast more than one ring?
03:54Let's do a list.
03:55Okay.
03:56Let's do a list.
03:57I have the whole list right here in front of me.
03:59I'll give you three strikes, but let's see if you can get all of the cities on this list.
04:04All right.
04:05Go ahead and take a guess.
04:06Well, I'm just trying to think about who's won, what, and well, I mean, my first, they only have one.
04:17And I got the whole list.
04:21How about Houston?
04:22I think they won two World Series in that time.
04:25Sorry.
04:25No, they did not.
04:27Houston.
04:28Houston.
04:28No.
04:29Is this just basketball, baseball, football?
04:31Yes.
04:31Just basketball, baseball, football for now.
04:33I'll expand later.
04:35And I'm not going to get into the fractions that you like to put on this, but I know that
04:39like L.A.'s won probably, according to you, 1.847 championships.
04:44That's more than one, though, Dibbs.
04:45So I'm going to say L.A.
04:46It's more than one, and it's also not true.
04:48Like the Rams, the Dodgers twice, the COVID championship, that can whatever.
04:53The Lakers and the bubble.
04:542020.
04:55Yeah.
04:55Los Angeles.
04:56Yes.
04:57That is a correct answer.
04:58Okay.
04:59All right.
04:59Now, you want to keep going?
05:03I do.
05:05You do?
05:05Are you sure?
05:06I mean.
05:06Are you sure you want to keep going?
05:08Only if there are more on the list.
05:10This is where it can really escalate.
05:12I'm thinking about.
05:13We're going to the bonus round.
05:14Would you like to keep going?
05:15The obvious one would be a city that has a bazillion teams, but I'm thinking like the
05:21Jets and the Giants don't win.
05:23The Yankees and the Mets don't win.
05:24I tell you what.
05:25The Knicks and the Nets don't win.
05:26Randy, will you hit the buzzer?
05:28Now hit it again.
05:29Great.
05:29No, the list is over.
05:33Seattle.
05:34No.
05:34Fear the Kraken.
05:35No.
05:36The list.
05:37Oklahoma.
05:38No.
05:40Den.
05:41Now, if we do hockey, then Denver.
05:43Score.
05:44WNBA.
05:44Vegas.
05:45Mm-hmm.
05:46Okay.
05:47Kaboom.
05:47Good one for you, Grandy.
05:49Dunked all over you.
05:50Yeah, you got got.
05:52Yeah.
05:52That boy.
05:53Shout out, Jim.
05:54And the restaurant at Frosty.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Anyway.
05:57So, one city.
05:58That's the list.
06:00Man.
06:00That's the list.
06:02And we out here going.
06:03It's actually not a list if there's only one item.
06:05Life is hard for us.
06:07We've only been to two NFC title games and a Super Bowl and had a parade in basketball and
06:12had 107 wins for our baseball team.
06:14This is hard.
06:15It's awful.
06:17It's terrible.
06:17I mean, the dynasties are like a full seven, eight years ago now.
06:24It's been like seven or eight years since we've had multiple dynasties.
06:27A lot of suffering.
06:28I will shout out.
06:29I'll shout out my brothers and sisters in the East Bay because the A's did leave.
06:34This is a good take.
06:35The A's left.
06:36The Raiders left just, actually, the Warriors left in 2019, so that wouldn't count, but the
06:43last of the teams, they left.
06:45The A's left.
06:46The A's left.
06:47My brothers and sisters in the Nickel Dime, 5-1-0.
06:50Yeah.
06:50I get it.
06:51I see you.
06:52That's a fair take, although the Warriors, to me, is a different departure.
06:56I understand the emotions around it, but they did not leave the greater, huge Bay Area.
07:00And that was before 2020.
07:02Yes.
07:02Yes.
07:03So it wouldn't qualify under this parameter.
07:06Yeah.
07:06If you're a diehard A's and Raiders fan and you grew up in the 5-1-0, you damn well know
07:12that our hearts have always gone out to that, and it sucks, and the ownership of both of
07:16those teams is just a flat-out ridiculous joke.
07:19Yes.
07:19No, not.
07:20So yes, that is a fair take.
07:22Of the remaining three, though, like, you're pretty much, you're rolling in it.
07:27In Kansas City, like, the Royals haven't been great, but you have Mahomes, and you've gotten
07:32what you've gotten there, and that's been pretty awesome, too.
07:35You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station
07:39in the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the free Odyssey app,
07:43coming to you live from the Laughing Among Studios.
07:44I'm not here to tell you that there haven't been disappointments and hard moments, and
07:49if that's the perspective you have, then that's the perspective you have.
07:53I'm not saying that, like, oh my gosh, we're crushing everybody, but, like, do you know what
08:00actually would be a list?
08:01All of the major cities who have bub-cus during this five-and-a-half-year period that we're
08:10talking about.
08:11And Kansas City actually goes on the list, because they've won two Super Bowls, so...
08:15Does that...
08:17Major market?
08:19I was kind of talking about the three...
08:20Oh, gotcha.
08:20...the three sport cities.
08:22Okay.
08:22The three sport cities.
08:24That's where my mind was.
08:25Fair enough.
08:26Yeah.
08:26But sure, sure, sure, sure, sure.
08:28Kansas City.
08:29Yeah, I mean, you've got some markets with three sports that, you know, probably don't
08:33deserve three sports, but...
08:35You're damn right.
08:36You know, and Kansas City's, they probably...
08:38I mean, they had basketball once upon a time, but now it's a two-sporter.
08:42Uh-oh, Sam's calling.
08:43No, don't let him on the air.
08:45Don't let him on!
08:47No.
08:48Four hours, not enough love men.
08:50No, I mean, yeah, like, here, because, like, yeah, let's go to Juan in Richmond.
08:57Hi, Juan, what's going on?
09:00Hey, guys, so I'm 39, I'm 39 years old, and, you know, I've lived in the Bay Area my whole
09:06life, but baseball, I'm a soccer guy and a football guy, so I don't really follow, you
09:11know, I support the Giants, but I'm not really a Giants fan, I'm not a Warrior fan, you know,
09:15I'm a die-hard Blood Niner fan, and I'm like a cat.
09:21I'm on two more lives, all right?
09:23Since I can remember, I've had seven deaths.
09:272011, Kyle Williams.
09:292012, Ravens on a five-yard line.
09:332013, Seattle.
09:3619, the Super Bowl of the Chiefs.
09:3821, in L.A., Tartt dropped that interception.
09:412022, Purdue tears his elbow, and 2023, we do the Super Bowl against the Chiefs again.
09:48I'm on two more lives.
09:50I'm done.
09:51You know, like, I'm 39, I didn't remember the 95 that much, so I don't have, I have none
09:58of my sports.
09:59I'm a Niner fan, like I said, and I haven't had that possibility of enjoying a championship
10:08like you guys have, you know, if you're a Giant fan or a Warrior fan, you guys have.
10:12You guys haven't been able to enjoy, you know, these championships.
10:15I haven't.
10:16Right now, I am like, I'm desperate.
10:19I don't know what to do, or like, you know, I'm just, I'm in that place where I'm down to
10:25two more lives.
10:25Juan, I totally get it.
10:27Now, this is, see, and this is honestly, Juan, really, really appreciate you calling.
10:32I do want you to know, the reason I found this to be a compelling conversation is because
10:38I do understand the other side of the coin, and it is simply a matter of perspective.
10:45So, if your full focus is, A, as he put it, Juan's like, I'm only a Niner fan.
10:50I'm not into the Warriors and the Giants.
10:52That's one part of it.
10:54But if your sole focus is on the tantalizingly, frustratingly close nature of what the Niners
11:00have been through recently, okay, I understand that.
11:03There is a second perspective, though, that talks about, well, they've been on multiple
11:10runs, and that in and of itself, I find to be a net positive.
11:16Of course.
11:17I don't, I'm not saying that it's like perfect and it's everything, but, you know, like I
11:23would, I would love for every Niner fan, especially the young ones, to talk to a Lions
11:27fan, talk to a Lions fan, and, and, and, like, they're good, right?
11:35They've got a good team.
11:36Do they?
11:37Sure.
11:38They did.
11:39I mean, their window may be closed.
11:41Maybe.
11:42I think you could talk to Arizona Cardinal fan, and you could talk to just Arizona fan, period.
11:47Like, the Phoenix Suns have won zero NBA titles, I believe.
11:52The Cardinals have won no Super Bowls, and the baseball team had a neat little run with
11:58Randy and Kurt, and that was about 20-something years ago.
12:02So, if you're born and raised in Phoenix or Scottsdale or Mesa, and you're one of these
12:06diehard Arizona fans, you want to talk about bupkis, not only do you get nothing, you've
12:12got a joke of a franchise in two of the three.
12:15I mean, Detroit, Detroit sits there for I don't know how many years.
12:18I'm sure their hockey team's been good, but, like, you know, other bad boys, Pistons.
12:22That's 35 years ago.
12:24Right.
12:24Like, you've been sitting there for so long, and then the Lions are always this laughing
12:28stock, and then they bring in this new coach, and he's got everybody's attention, and they
12:33put together a squad, and they believe, and they just fire all the way out to a 17-point
12:39halftime lead in the NFC Championship game.
12:44Rug out from underneath your feet.
12:46And then the following year, they're like, it's okay.
12:50We're the one seed.
12:52Yeah.
12:53So, we're going to right last year's wrong.
12:57And then you get your butts kicked on your home field in your very first playoff game.
13:02That's where I can, like, again, that feels a little bit different, although maybe the younger
13:09Niner fan feels like this is the exact same thing.
13:11I don't know, but I can only look at it through my eyes, which is I am a fan of all three teams,
13:20and we have had a parade on a trip to the Super Bowl and a different trip to the NFC title
13:24game.
13:25You sniffed it if you're a Niner fan.
13:26I'm not telling you it's perfect.
13:27I'm just telling you it's not, quote, not kind to you.
13:31And if you think about that, and he talked about losing seven of his nine lives, he's a cat.
13:36He's got two lives left.
13:38But think about those lives that you've lived and lost.
13:41Those are sports thrills.
13:43And that's what I would want as a sports fan.
13:46And you mentioned Detroit.
13:47The Tigers in 2012, they swept the Yankees, and they went to the World Series, and they were thinking,
13:53all right, it's been since 1984 since Detroit won the whole damn thing, and you got the Giants?
13:59We've got Scherzer and Verlander, and we're hot, and you get swept.
14:04And Pablo just starts pummeling balls into the stands.
14:08Right.
14:08So if you're Detroit, the Lions don't ever get there.
14:12The Tigers every 30 years get there.
14:15And the Pistons, since the bad boys, haven't really been much of a threat.
14:19So, yes, things could be better here.
14:22Things have been better here.
14:24Like, think about the 2010 decade.
14:26Giants got three.
14:27The Warriors birthed a dynasty and got a few.
14:30And the Niners went to one and didn't win it.
14:32The 10s were better than the 20s, but we're not that hard up here over the last six years.
14:37Yeah.
14:37Text line, does Boston count Celtics and Pats?
14:40Pats haven't won in the last five years.
14:43They went yesterday.
14:45Yep.
14:46And they lost.
14:472019, February of 2019 is when they won the bowl.
14:51Yeah.
14:51So we're talking about starting in 2020.
14:54And it's been Chiefs and Chiefs and Eagles and Seahawks and the Rams.
15:02All right.
15:02888-957-9570.
15:04Bleacher Dave's got a good take.
15:06Matt in Napa.
15:07You guys stay right where you are.
15:08We're coming to you.
15:09And let's get some more in here.
15:11888-957-9570.
15:13Do you believe that, quote, the decade has not been kind to you?
