00:00This is from the Warriors Talk podcast on NBC Sports Bay Area,
00:04and I want to let you know before you listen to it
00:07that when he refers to someone at Chase Center,
00:11what you can't see because you're only listening,
00:15he points up.
00:16In other words, somebody upstairs.
00:18Somebody taller than Monty Poole.
00:19And Monty's about 6'5".
00:21Quinton Post.
00:22No, someone upstairs at Chase Center.
00:25In other words, a muckety-muck.
00:28And watch out for the muckety-mucks.
00:30There's also payroll up there in HR, but I get where you're going.
00:34Joan and payroll.
00:36Margin accounting.
00:37So totally.
00:38Thanks for Steph has gotten the host.
00:40So listen to this.
00:42Monty Poole.
00:43Somebody in the building, Chase Center, told me about three weeks ago,
00:46they said, we've really kind of screwed Steph over the past few years.
00:49Really?
00:50Yes.
00:50How so?
00:51The way they, first of all, this true timeline thing.
00:54No, that didn't work.
00:55That didn't work.
00:56But you mentioned on the last podcast.
00:57The way they drafted.
00:58Yeah.
00:58Okay.
00:58They didn't draft guys that were ready to play.
01:00Right.
01:01They drafted guys that would need to be.
01:02They revamped their development, player development department.
01:04And still, the three lottery picks they had.
01:06James Wiseman, we don't know what he's going to be.
01:08Jonathan Kaminga, we don't know what he's going to be.
01:09Moses Moody, we're getting a picture of what he can be.
01:11But none of those three are saying, you're saying, okay, that guy's a cornerstone somewhere.
01:14You're not getting that.
01:15No doubt.
01:15And so that's part of it.
01:16And the way they bypassed some players where you had scouts and coaches saying one thing
01:22and people upstairs saying another thing.
01:23By playing a few players in the draft.
01:25Yeah.
01:25Okay.
01:25So this.
01:26If only the guy wouldn't stop interrupting him, his partner there.
01:29Who is that guy?
01:30I don't know.
01:31He sounds good, but he's chiming in a lot, Bonte.
01:34I'm just kidding.
01:35There's Bonte and Monty talking it out.
01:37Chopping it up like people do.
01:38That's right.
01:39Okay.
01:40I want to then let's.
01:42Stupidest question ever.
01:43No, it actually was just a conversation.
01:45There's no questions.
01:48Let's juxtapose that with the way that Steve Kerr answered our question yesterday when we
01:55said, hey, is it still crazy to give up a bunch of future first round draft capital when
02:03all your stars are over 35?
02:05Last summer, he had publicly stated that's crazy.
02:08It's crazy to give all that up when your stars are about to retire.
02:11So he said, what about now?
02:14Or did the Jimmy Butler injury change that?
02:16And listen to the way he asked it.
02:19You know, the beauty of being a coach is that you don't have to worry about any of that
02:24stuff.
02:24I believe in the separation of church and state, you know, and my job is to coach the team.
02:31And I'm focused on that.
02:32You know, it's Mike's job and Joe's job and the whole group, you know, to decide what decisions
02:38are made.
02:38I have great faith in what they do and in their decision making, whatever it is.
02:43I know they're not going to jeopardize the franchise's long term future unless something
02:48really makes sense to them.
02:50And that's what they have to assess and decide.
02:53OK, now I am in full understanding that that is Steve Kerr making a public statement that
02:59was on 95 seven, the game and the Willard and Dibs show.
03:02That's right.
03:03So that's why he's saying it the way he's saying it.
03:07And I understand that.
03:08But I also want to mention, I don't I don't like that.
03:13That's not, in my opinion, the way to do it.
03:15You want to believe in the separation of church and state?
03:18Hey, that's fine.
03:19But church and state better also be working together.
03:21They better be helping each other out when you can.
03:24So if the concept is, hey, I'm just the coach here, you guys do what you do.
03:32Well, that's fine, provided that the front office is aware of how does the coach and the top
03:38players, how do they want to play and what do they need?
03:42And if I'm going to go out then as the front office and do the opposite of that, well, then
03:46you have a problem.
03:47And that is what has happened with the Golden State Warriors.
03:51If Steve Curry is like, you got to draft Franz Wagner, that's who you got because we have
03:57Steph Curry and we need to win right now.
03:59And the front office is sitting there five years ago going, I mean, you're probably done
04:06winning.
04:06The dynasty is fading.
04:07So let's get an 18-year-old who never played any college basketball.
04:15Let's get Jonathan Kaminga.
04:17But the ha-ha.
04:19Right.
04:19And the highlights.
04:20So this is where we've arrived and why I don't believe this is on Jonathan or Steve.
04:26Jonathan is just who he is.
04:28But the Warriors were who they were and continue to be because the dynasty wasn't over.
04:35And Steph is still playing great.
04:37And Steve is stuck on that.
04:39And the front office keeps sending projects.
04:44And that is what has led to this entire discord.
04:48Well, it's been a while since they've been sending projects.
04:51And I look at last year where they took their first round pick and they traded it.
04:55They traded it as a part of that, like, nine-player, five-team monstrosity that sent out Lindy
05:01Waters and Dennis Schroeder and Slo-Mo and Wiggins.
05:06And the pick went to Miami.
05:07And so they'll, they used it last year.
05:09And I'm even looking back at their first round pick in 2024.
05:14That got sent to Memphis as a part of the Iguodala trade.
05:19When Memphis took Iguodala, the Warriors sent their pick that year too, which finally conferred
05:23two years ago.
05:24So it's a long way to say that they've done this in the past where they've kind of said
05:29F them picks.
05:30And so they're looking at these ones now and they're probably thinking, you know what?
05:34We'd love to have them.
05:35But at the same time, we can use them as fodder to get something good.
05:39And I also think that because those three things have happened, Wiseman, where you could
05:44have gotten a bunch of guys after him who were good.
05:46And then Kaminga and Moody, who went one pick before Alperin, Shen Goon.
05:50And because those three things have happened, I do believe now Steve Kerr and company have
05:56a little bit more voice in the matter than they did then.
05:59I hope so.
05:59And by the way, it's not just that they happened.
06:01They happened and then they stubbornly stuck to them when it was clear that that was probably
06:07not what the organization needed in that moment.
06:11I mean, my God, he's still on the team.
06:13I don't think they stuck with Wiseman.
06:15No.
06:15Well, I mean, they they got what they could get for Wiseman when they when it reached
06:20that point where he clearly wasn't going to play anymore at its lowest value, at its
06:25lowest value.
06:25I don't think it was ever at its high value.
06:27Well, I do.
06:28After a game, maybe.
06:29No, it was hurt in his rookie year.
06:31Remember, it was before they picked him.
06:32That's when it was at its highest value.
06:34Well, and you didn't go that route.
06:35They should have traded the pick and they should have taken a more ready made, grown up
06:39adult style player.
06:40One hundred percent.
06:41And I think that, again, that's the rub for me with this entire organization.
06:46That's the rub.
06:47It's the rub.
06:48But I only get really bothered if they continue to do that going forward.
06:52That's fine.
06:53And I like all by that.
06:54I just think when you hear Steve use the word alignment, remember, when we get to the
06:58end of the year, let's see if we're aligned.
07:01That's what he's in my opinion.
07:02That's what he's talking about.
07:04Without a doubt.
07:04That's what he's talking about.
07:06And alignment also for me includes Steph and, you know, Draymond, like him or not, he's going
07:11to be here.
07:11And even Jimmy Butler, who's a warrior for another year and a half.
07:14And, you know, Mike Dunleavy might be stuck in the middle, but ultimately Joe owns the
07:21team with a bunch of other people.
07:22But Joe owns the team and he runs the team.
07:24And if he decides, hey, we're not going to trade these picks because I want to find another
07:2918 year old, you might lose some of these guys.
07:31I don't like the text that just came in.
07:33I don't like it at all.
07:34OK, but thank you for listening to the entire show today.
07:37Well, don't read it then.
07:38Well, no, I mean, it's it's a little bit of a morbid laugh.
07:42OK.
07:43707 is Steph Brooks.
07:46Oh, Brooks from Shawshank Redemption.
07:49Yeah.
07:49Again, Andy.
07:51Andy likes hope.
07:52Hope is a good thing.
07:54Maybe the best of things.
07:56And no good thing ever dies.
07:58And Red doesn't like hope.
07:59Hope is a dangerous thing.
08:02Hope can drive a man insane.
08:04And Brooks wound up getting paroled and working at a grocery store and being overwhelmed by
08:10the pace that the groceries were coming at him.
08:12And then he actually asked to go to the bathroom and the manager said, you don't have to ask
08:16Brooks.
08:17And then Brooks went home and took a really long nap.
08:21A forever nap.
08:22Yeah.
08:23So, yeah.
08:24Brooks was institutionalized.
08:25Yeah.
08:26I'm not crazy.
08:27Institutionalized.
08:28Institutionalized.
08:28I think Draymond is.
08:30Some people think Steph has Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to Draymond.
08:34And you know what that is.
08:35That's when you become enamored and even fall in love with your captors.
08:40Stockholm Syndrome.
08:41Exactly.
08:42Real quick, Westside D.
08:43Monty Poole coming up five minutes.
08:45Westside D.
08:46What's up?
08:49Gentlemen.
08:49Yo.
08:50Thanks for having me back on the air.
08:51Yeah.
08:54Calling because I kind of feel like we're in the weeds a lot on this conversation with
08:57Giannis.
08:58But I want to step back and see how I can see the tea leaves a long time ago when I
09:03saw Giannis come to the Bay Area for the first time.
09:06And strangely, Joe Jacob also made a Greek Heritage Night at the arena.
09:11I'm like, I didn't know we had a Greek Heritage Night.
09:14And then for the next couple of years, it was Greek Heritage Night.
09:17And I kind of feel like this dance, this courting has been going on ever since Giannis came
09:22in the league.
09:22And when you see the rapport between, of course, Giannis and our boy, Steph, in the All-Star
09:29game, you can just tell they would love to take it off the court and win a championship
09:33together.
09:34So, in the end, when you say, who does Giannis want to be with?
09:38I ultimately feel he's a family man and he's a person of faith.
09:41And that's kind of how they got Durant the first time.
09:44And I kind of feel that's how it's going to go again.
09:46I mean, Westside D., thank you for the call.
09:49You might be right.
09:51Listen, if I had a nickel, though, for every time, they're like, ooh, look, they talk to
09:55each other on the court.
09:56They look like friends.
09:57I bet they'll play together.
09:58Greek Heritage Night, though, when he comes to town, that's a little telegraphed.
10:02That's a little too on the nose.
10:03I mean, what a coincidence.
10:05I can't deny it.
10:07And if your larger point is the Warriors have been working on this for a long time, that's
10:12true.
10:12That's just flat out true.
10:14It's flat out true, which is why I have zero concerns.
10:18Like, Grandy, we were all texting earlier, Grandy has concerns that the Warriors might
10:22not go all, like, all, all, all in.
10:25I don't know.
10:26Maybe I'm the one who's wrong.
10:27I have no concerns.
10:29Like, this is what they've been waiting for.
10:32And they could go all, all, all in, and the Bucs could say, that's not good enough.
10:37Absolutely they could.
10:38And at that point, I personally would not be that bothered.
10:41If it is four picks and a swap, and it's, you know, your choice of all our non-staff
10:49players, you can have any of the non-staff minutes, as we like to call them.
10:52So you get four firsts, a swap, and you're picking the litter, and Milwaukee says, that's
10:58not good enough.
11:00Well, to me, that's you doing everything you can to make it happen.
11:02And I think that that's what they'll do.
11:05And you're right.
11:06It might not be enough.
