When converting a classic car, you've got to work with the bones of the car to find the best place for the battery. Sometimes, that means squeezing in tight places.

About Reverend Gadget's Garage:
In an old lightbulb factory in South Central LA, Reverend Gadget is converting classic cars into powerful electric vehicles. A mad-scientist, real-life Doc Brown from Back to the Future, Gadget is saving the planet, one car at a time!

This clip comes from Season 1, Episode 1: Open Up Those Electron Channels!

00:00Ooh, I wish I was wearing gloves now.
00:07While I'm waiting for some parts that may fix the Mustang, I am turning back to the Volkswagen Kombi.
00:13We want to move these cars through as quickly as possible, because you don't know when the next really interesting project is going to come your way.
00:19Gotta crawl in here.
00:21The first thing is we've got to get this fuel tank out.
00:23Mm-hmm.
00:24It has to come out anyway.
00:25And we know it's behind this wall.
00:26Once the fuel tank's out, we'll be able to see what kind of structure's inside there and how we need to alter it to get the batteries in.
00:33So getting these doors out, I think this screams for you, Hedda, because you're the only one who can fit in there.
00:38Sweet.
00:39In order to figure out where the battery packs can go in the conversion, we need to figure out what's behind the crew cab wall and under the bed.
00:48While Hedda slips into the back seat to look for that hidden gas tank, I need to make sure that the battery for this car is wired correctly.
00:56Right now, getting Tesla batteries into conversions is the leading edge.
01:01These are Tesla Model S batteries.
01:03And when installed in a Model S, they have millions of dollars of research and technology put into them.
01:08Now what I'm trying to do is repackage them and put them in a bus that's over 50 years old.
01:13With batteries in an electric car, you're putting them under a lot of stress, especially if you're fast charging.
01:20When EV batteries overheat, that's a huge problem.
01:23This is conductive rubber with little fins on it.
01:25And when they press up against the side of the cell, they make contact.
01:28So it can take the heat, the heat can go from the cell itself through this conductive rubber and into this ribbon,
01:35which has got the chilled water running through it.
01:38And so that way you can pull the heat out and keep all the temperatures consistent.
01:42That should keep the thing cool.
01:44What I'm doing opposed to other people is I'm making full use of all the Tesla innovations,
01:49which requires a lot of fabrication, thought, and innovating.
01:53What I'm doing is I'm innovating.
