00:02Gary's next project is to reinvent an authentic piece of engineering that he bought from a
00:07helicopter museum for 50 pounds. I couldn't resist that, it's just got such great form.
00:14This tripod jack would originally have been used to hold up the tail end of a helicopter
00:18during maintenance and repair. I'm not quite sure what we're going to do with it yet, but
00:23it's just a really cool thing and it's obsolete now. It could make a really cool garden feature,
00:28but it's one of those things, it's got so many options. It's obviously built for a purpose and
00:34we're going to give it another one. Gary's already got an idea of what he wants to transform this into
00:40and after some brainstorming his vision starts to take shape. It lends itself to be an amazing
00:48armillary sphere or sundial. Thought to have been invented by the ancient Greeks, the armillary
00:53sphere was created to represent a model of the universe with the earth at its centre.
00:58The arrow through the middle of its interlocking rings casts a shadow to tell the time.
01:03Some of the classic ones are utilising a figure of Atlas supporting the world.
01:11That's the bracket that's already in place and I'm going to utilise that and fabricate Atlas,
01:17so mount him on there and then see how that can be fixed to the outer ring. Very often it's
01:22a case of
01:22bringing together things that you had knocking around. That's why we never throw anything away
01:28around here. And I happen to find this numerical strip which has come off an old armillary sphere.
01:36This will be a useful piece to incorporate into this design. Looking at the dimensions of the base,
01:42the top's going to have to be just short of a metre in diameter.
01:48I don't have the tools to be able to create this so I need to go to a very clever
01:54blacksmith friend of mine.
01:58This is going to be something really quite special.
02:03you
