Jayana Clarke is the new National Junior Calypso Monarch winner, with her song Role Models.

00:00We're our leaders today, to be an example for we young people, we're our leaders today.
00:08When the young one's looking for a role model, who could tell me how to work?
00:14When I see you walking crooked and looking shady, you want to tell me how to talk.
00:19When I spend parliament, you'll go cost somebody, them is the role models for the nation's youth.
00:26But if I make a mistake, it's me, you're ready to prosecute.
00:33So leaders, check yourself and fix it.
00:37She might be the smallest person on stage, but she had the biggest voice with the biggest message.
00:43As 11-year-old Janiah Clark was crowned the winner of the first Citizens Tuku National Junior Calypso Muna.
00:51Janiah won from 15 other contestants with her song, Role Model.
00:55She also made history as the youngest female to ever win the title.
01:00Janiah credited much of her success to her composer, Brian London.
01:04Brian London wrote this song, and this song is about role models and what we need to have in this country.
01:12Like parents, police officers and youths.
01:16Asked how she felt about the message in the song, and who are her role models, Janiah said.
01:22That it was a true song.

01:26Um, God.
01:30Composer Brian London says he knew from the first performance that Janiah was special, adding that with ongoing concern about the future of Calypso,
01:39he's committed to keeping the art form alive through young performers.
01:42I write a lot for juniors because people have the conversations that is Calypso dying all the time.
01:49And I think whether or not you believe that or not, I have to play my part in keeping the legacy of Calypso alive through the juniors.
01:56Sometimes people ask me to write for juniors and I sometimes write 10, 15 songs for juniors because I just want to do my part to ensure that there's longevity in the business.

02:06It's just about love and to get more juniors involved.
02:08Kaelan Allen from Holy Name Convent placed the second with her in addition, Men Are Needed.

02:29So I run into the altar and I come in as a daughter.

02:44Third place went to Kayla Ramsey from Bishop's High School in Tobago with her song, Who Am I?
02:50So is rebellion gave birth to me, fighting colonial cruelty.

03:12Fourth place went to Casey Wilson of Queen's Royal College with his renodition, Identity.
03:18The winners will receive their prizes at a prize distribution ceremony on a date yet to be announced.
