00:00The U.S. military action has ceased in the Caribbean based on what's going on with the radar installed by
00:05the U.S. in Tobago.
00:07The question was put to the Defense Minister during today's post-Cabinet media briefing.
00:12We would have the use of the radar for the foreseeable future. I can't give a definitive timeline.
00:20And the reason why we need it, we already have a radar center, but our radar systems are somewhat limited.
00:29The radar systems provided by the U.S., they work with drone technology and satellite communications and so on,
00:38so that it offers a lot more than what we have, and that is needed at this point in time
00:44to achieve certain objectives
00:46because, as you would appreciate, the Coast Guard's fleet is not what it should be,
00:54so that we need the assistance in terms of detection, which would help us with the limited fleet we have.
01:02It would help us to respond in a timely manner and intercept.
01:08Minister Sturge refused to divulge if there are still U.S. military persons present in TNT and their strength.
01:16I wouldn't be providing that information.
01:19Well, I don't think we have a right to know if there are foreign military officers in our country, in
01:24our soil.
01:25You have a right to know?
01:27Of course.
01:27Okay.
01:30You have a right to know where you get that right?
01:34This is my country.
01:35You know, if there are foreign military officers in my soil.
01:38If it's your country, the fact that there are military personnel here, does that take away from your sovereignty
01:43or does it not add to your sovereignty when the enemy would be persons, narco-traffickers,
01:48who we have not been able to contain over so many decades?
01:52The Minister of Defence, Wayne Sturge, is hailing the success of measures put in place
01:57to safeguard visitors to the nation's beaches,
02:00calling the country blessed to have had no recorded drownings for the Carnival Weekend
02:05when thousands flocked to the beach.
02:08We additionally brought out lifeguard services from the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard.
02:15We also acquired, by way of rental, some jet skis for the Miaro constituency.
02:25We understand that Las Cuevas already has one.
02:29I visited yesterday.
02:30I saw the one in Las Cuevas.
02:31And from the visit yesterday, I understand that we are very close to bringing back the jet ski
02:40that the Maracas Bay facility has.
02:44It has been known for quite some time.
02:45And we've put things in place to have it back up and running very soon.
02:49So we are pleased to announce that based on the initiatives we have done
02:54and the invitations and the advice that we offered,
02:59that there have been no drownings at all for the period we've covered.
