Quranic Verses on Govt School Walls, Portraits of National Icons Tied Up: Sambhal School Row Sparks Protest

A controversy erupted at a government primary school in Sambhal district after allegations surfaced that images of national leaders and revered figures were removed and Quranic verses painted on school walls. The incident triggered protests by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal activists, leading to police intervention and suspension of school staff.

The incident took place at a government school in Nagla Purva village of Fatehgarh, under Chandausi tehsil. According to reports, VHP and Bajrang Dal activists reached the school around noon on Friday after being informed that religious verses from the Quran had been written on the walls of the school premises.

The activists alleged that portraits of the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Goddess Saraswati, Bharat Mata, Subhash Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore and other national icons were found tied with ropes and kept inside a room. Terming the act a violation of norms governing government schools, they raised slogans and questioned the school staff.

Police reached the spot following reports of a disturbance. A heated argument reportedly broke out between the activists, school staff and police personnel as attempts were made to defuse the situation.

School principal Pushpa Devi accused assistant teacher Mohammad Nazim of being responsible for the incident, while the teacher denied the allegations and blamed the school administration. Both were seen accusing each other during the confrontation.

VHP and Bajrang Dal later submitted a written complaint at the police station, alleging that religious activities were being conducted in violation of rules inside the government school. They demanded an impartial probe and strict action against those responsible.

VHP worker Ashish Toofani claimed that Quranic verses were clearly visible on the walls and that portraits of eminent personalities had been deliberately removed. He said the matter was brought to the notice of the Education Department.

Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Alka Sharma confirmed that the issue had come to light and said that the school principal Pushpa Rani and assistant teacher Mohammad Nazim have been suspended with immediate effect. She added that departmental action would be taken against anyone else found involved.

Station in-charge Lokendra Tyagi said the matter pertains to the Basic Education Department and is under investigation. Police action will follow based on the findings of the inquiry.
