01:01So excited to be here. The very first unfinished business, right?
01:05Thank you very much. Do my job for me, Mike. You'll be back.
01:09Honestly, I cannot quite believe that it is the 20th anniversary of The Apprentice.
01:14Things have changed a lot, let's be honest.
01:16Since the show started, there's been eight prime ministers since Lord Sugar started firing people.
01:21It was eight. It was also pre-smartphone, pre-Instagram, pre-side hustle.
01:26It was basically a historical drama at this point.
01:29So, 20 years ago, Richie, what were you up to?
01:31So, 20 years ago, 2005. I don't know if I was born, actually, Angela.
01:36I'm joking, obviously. Obviously, it's just good writing.
01:40I remember when The Apprentice first came on, the iconic orchestral theme tune.
01:45And because we didn't go and rush off to Instagram and TikTok and Facebook and all that.
01:49You weren't double screening.
01:50We were sitting there in the cafeteria at college talking about The Apprentice.
01:54Who are these new candidates in their suits, running around?
01:58Lord Sugar, back on television.
02:00And I just remember it was a great time when I had all my dreams laid out in front of me.
02:04Obviously, I was 18, so it was pre-braces.
02:07So, I had the big teeth, the glasses, the big...
02:09I looked like a Guess Who character.
02:10But it was a good time for me, you know what I mean?
02:12It was a great time. I was in Copenhagen at a full moon party topless.
02:16Okay.
02:17Yeah.
02:17That was me last week.
02:19Listen, if it works, it works.
02:21Mike, what were you up to?
02:23I remember The Apprentice starting.
02:25Back there, I was...
02:27At the time, I was on the board of Britain's biggest magazine publishers.
02:31I had the most cushy job you could possibly imagine.
02:34Did you?
02:35And The Apprentice did this amazing thing.
02:38I think alongside Dragon's Den, which came out in the same six-week period, it kind of transformed the way that people look at business.
02:47All of a sudden, people started to think in a more entrepreneurial way.
02:51Business wasn't a thing that just business people understood.
02:54And interesting fact here, within a year, I had left my cushy corporate job and started my own business.
03:01And do you think that was because of what you saw?
03:04I think that was a period where everybody began to think life could be more than just having a straightforward nine-to-five job.
03:14It really inspired so many people.
03:17And it's incredible, I think, to be sitting here 20 years on and to look at just how much it's changed.
03:22Yeah, and it did make business sexy.
03:25Yes.
03:26You know, it was like, oh, those characters, you started to understand the complexity and how glamorous, although, you know, the day-to-day.
03:33But listen, you think back then, right?
03:35You had people like Paul Teresi was in the first series, was a massive name, Saoirse Khan.
03:41Tim Campbell, I mean, where is he now?
03:43I don't know, it didn't work out for him.
03:46He has not aged a day.
03:48Right, episode one, let's get into it.
03:50It did not mess about, did it?
03:52It was absolutely supersized.
03:55We had a double firing.
03:56We had Lord Sugar giving it the 007 and an apprentice first, a boardroom out of London.
04:03Oh, yeah.
04:05And because it's 20 years, it wasn't just 18 candidates like usual.
04:09Lord Sugar dropped two more in, bringing us to a lovely round 20.
04:15And I mean, what a bunch they are.
04:18We've got Kieran, the a bit sexy estate agent, a bit, he's a low-key, humble kind of man.
04:25Roxanne, the chilli pepper pocket rocket, try saying that after a few glasses.
04:28And Daniel, who made his first meal at 25, but kind of didn't, really.
04:33No, it's a big thing to say, when I made my first million, and then you find out that would turn over.
04:40Yeah.
04:40Because that's before costs.
04:41So shall we talk about the profit?
04:43Oh, a profit of maybe a tenner?
04:46Does a matter.
04:46Sounds good on Instagram, do you know what I mean?
04:48Times are changing.
04:50It's all fluff.
04:51Richie, who stood out?
04:53Well, every year, when The Apprentice comes on, me and my family have, like, an apprentice sweepstake.
04:58So we put all of the candidates into a hat.
05:00We put 50p in each, and then we all draw out a name.
05:03So I've got Kieran this year.
05:04And also, because there's two extra candidates, it rounds up to 20 quid this year.
05:08No, a tenner?
05:09This is why I'll be bad on The Apprentice.

05:12It's a good few.
05:13A tenner.
05:13I mean, look, have you got any room for any more people to join the sweepstake?

05:18Because we were blindsided by the two new candidates, we do need two more.

05:25So I absolutely love Kieran.
05:27I think he's brilliant.
05:28Do you love him, or do you love him because you got him?

05:37And also, the way she was able to think on her feet with that negotiation.

05:46And I feel like Kieran was the PM, but Connor was the CEO on this channel.

05:55I just think he's got that kind of bubbly sense of enthusiasm that's going to get him through the process.

06:05To me, he's like teddy bear material.
06:07I mean, I wonder whether he might toughen up.
06:10Well, let's talk about the specifics of this week's task.
06:14A fan favourite, discount buying.
06:17The candidates were tasked with finding nine items for the very best price.
06:22Yes.
06:22In Hong Kong, it's my absolute favourite as well.
06:24Well, why do you think this is such a gem of a task?
06:28For me, the discount buying task in The Apprentice is like Blackpool to Strictly.
06:33You know what I mean?
06:34I feel like it's the one that all the candidates want to be involved in.
06:37And because it's the first task, they don't really know each other and their personalities.
06:40So you're kind of thrown into the bear pit with this one.
06:44But it's almost like the discount buying aspect of this task was somewhat forgotten because they couldn't find the things.
06:53So the actual negotiation was less of an issue in a way.
06:58I think a task like this, it's a procurement task.
07:01So if you're in procurement, what you need to know is what's the spec of the product that you're trying to buy and how much are you willing to pay for it?
07:08And that is the basis then for all the negotiation.
07:11And it does feel like there was a, maybe that's like first week, you know, first task panic.
07:17You know, I think both sides struggled.
07:19Yeah.
07:19But I just think there was no, there was just no structure to follow with it.
07:23It was given supermarket sweep.
07:24It's as if they thought Hong Kong has got four walls.
07:27We're going to be contained and all we have to do is womble around and find these.
07:30But no, no, no.
07:31Also, it's, you know, Hong Kong is an extraordinary place.
07:34You know, it is the absolute centre of commerce and deal making.
07:38But it's vast.
07:40When they were looking at those maps in the brainstorm at the beginning, they're going, well, we'll start in the north and you guys start in the south.
07:46There are tens of miles between those things.
07:49The travel time that it takes between those.
07:52They just didn't grab the bull by the horns from the very beginning.
07:55If they'd started small, then maybe they could have managed to build up more items as they went along.
08:03But do you know what?
08:03In their defence, I do think it's so hard when you are following an actual map.
08:08So last year when me and Dean, we went on a cruise.
08:10And before we got on the cruise.
08:11Are you saying you got lost on a boat?
08:13No, no, no.
08:14On a boat.
08:14But before we got on the cruise, we boarded the boat in Athens.
08:17Okay.
08:18So we had a couple of days in Athens.
08:19And I said, because it's a beautiful country, a beautiful city we've never been to.
08:22Let's go around without our phones and just follow a map.
08:25And it's easy.
08:25Honestly, Mike, you're looking at me.
08:27It's easily done.
08:28You did it by choice.
08:29We were nearly in another part of Greece.
08:31Honestly, I was two hours late for the boat, nearly.
08:33I mean, I'm not investing.
08:36Let's talk about the winning team, the boys.
08:38Even though they won, they didn't exactly cover themselves in glory, did they?
08:42They were kind of like the least bad of the two teams, weren't they?
08:48Ultimately, Lord Sugar was completely unimpressed.
08:53Have you ever seen him so despondent?
08:57Week one, especially.
08:59I've never seen him so disappointed so early on.
09:04But listen, you know, if you're going to disappoint Lord Sugar, definitely don't make him fly 12 and a half hours to Hong Kong.
09:12Exactly.
09:12Especially not in economy.
09:13I mean, there's no leg room back there.
09:16And he's got long legs.
09:19Absolutely.
09:20Do you know what I mean?
09:21A little something special.

09:23I did a celebrity apprentice.
09:25I don't know whether I've mentioned it.
09:26I may have won or I may have not.

09:28Anyway, Lord Sugar has since followed me on Instagram.

09:33And we've kicked it up a notch.

09:38Here's what he would have done differently.

09:45Now, Angela, this is one of my favourite tasks because it should be ridiculously simple.
09:51Yet every year they make the same mistakes.
09:55Now, the first thing I'd do is don't panic.
09:59Read the paperwork I provide.
10:01All the clues are in there.
10:03And make sure at least one person can read a bloody map.
10:07The split.
10:09The list.
10:10Then you split the list.
10:12Get on the phone.
10:14Find an item.
10:16Have a clear destination.
10:18Don't assume running around like headless chickens gets you nowhere.
10:23Remember, don't be afraid to walk away from a bad deal.
10:28Just say no.

10:43The point he makes is you start with a plan.
10:46You start with a strategy and you go from there.

10:49I think it is time that we meet our first candidate to face Lord Sugar's famous firing finger.
10:56Let us remind ourselves of that very moment.
10:59Yes, you put yourself forward as the project manager, very brave.
11:05But you was two hours late and you only got one item and you were the overall project manager.

11:19And so it is with regret that you're fired.

11:36It's so, so lovely to have you here.

11:40I know, I know, I know.
11:41How was it watching the task back?
11:43That whole process is such a long, we was there for like almost a week.
11:47So for it to be condensed down into just one hour and it's the whole meeting Lord Sugar to begin with, flying out to Hong Kong, doing the task, the firing, everything.
11:57And then it's literally 60 minutes.
11:59It's crazy.
12:01But no, it was fun.
12:02We did have lots of fun doing it.
12:04It looked like you did not.
12:08I was stressed watching you.
12:10But you did put yourself forward for PM first task.
12:13A very, very brave move so early on.
12:18Looking back at that decision, do you stand over there?
12:21Are you happy with that?
12:23I went in saying I'm going to put myself out there straight away.
12:28Regardless of the task, I wanted to make like be bold and make a statement.
12:32And I just thought I could, I can take control.
12:35I felt like we weren't really a team.
12:37Everyone was very much, but, you know, individual, playing for themselves.
12:41And I didn't know anyone's strengths either.
12:44So, but I, I did what I said I was going to do.
12:47And I said, I'm just going to go in and I'm going to be strong, put myself out there.
12:52Obviously, it didn't pay off.
12:54But, but I like the energy.
12:56You were like, I don't care what the task is, what skills are required of me.
12:59I'm going in.
13:01Kim Kardashian is an inspiration of yours.
13:03That feels quite Kim K.
13:04She's like acting sure.
13:06I'll do it.
13:07Billionaire, sign me up.
13:10Yeah.
13:10With like the whole Kim K thing, like, as in, I know she's got a lot of negative media and press.
13:15But if you look at her, she is a powerhouse.
13:18She's a mom.
13:19She's a billionaire.
13:20She's a businesswoman.
13:21She's got a law degree.
13:22Like she's got everything going on.
13:25So I look at her and think she is an inspiration.
13:27I'm a mom.
13:28I was like the only one on there with like two like really young kids as well.
13:33So, yeah.
13:34And again, it's that in itself is a challenge, you know, like leaving your kids.
13:39And again, they're so little.
13:40So it's, it's a lot.
13:42It's a lot.
13:42Did the two kids enjoy watching you or did they understand it?
13:47They will see me on a screen.
13:49But again, they're still very little.
13:51So I don't think they'll fully understand like what I've gone away and done.
13:55But obviously now we're in this generation.
13:57I can record it.
13:58I can save it.
13:59I can show it to them later and just show like, you know, you can do it all.
14:03And also maybe what you can say to them is, you know, Lord Sugar points at the people he really likes.
14:11That's a beautiful way.
14:12I can tell them anything.
14:13I won.
14:14I was the winner.
14:16I think you should be so, so proud yourself.
14:20And I'm sure they will be too.
14:22I just wanted to go in and just show like, you know, being a mom is an end of everything.
14:26You can still do everything.
14:28So that's why I just wanted to go in strong and lead everyone.
14:32Very inspiring.
14:34Did you kind of, do you think in retrospect, you missed out on the planning part of the task?
14:40Because it's all very well being brilliant and negotiating.
14:43Yeah.
14:43But unless you're actually in a position where you can show how good you are at negotiating, it's a bit difficult.
14:47It felt to me like the girls team were out there without really having an operational plan to go alongside the negotiation strategy.
14:56Yeah, definitely.
14:56I think when we was in like the brainstorm, we supposedly had this good idea.
15:02We thought we had mapped out the items and we said we can start in this location, you know, the sub team can start at that part of the island and we'll start at the other part of the island.
15:10And we felt like we had a really good, strong idea of where the items were.
15:16But it felt like you didn't really look at the information.
15:22Like there was quite a bit of information.
15:23And you're like, shrimp paste, anyone, let's go looking for, you spent a lot of time looking for shrimp paste.
15:29So with the shrimp paste, tell me, Nikki.
15:32It's supposedly really common in Hong Kong.
15:35So it's like we could.
15:36Supposedly.
15:37Supposedly.

15:38We could get it anywhere.
15:40And it was an easy.
15:41Who said that?
15:42All the locals that said that.
15:44Everyone we spoke to said, oh, yep, shrimp paste, you know, like there's fish markets.
15:47They're known for fish that, you know, they like their seafood.
15:51So we thought it was an easy win.
15:53And the areas that we were in supposedly had shrimp paste.
15:57But we were just running around like headless chickens.
16:00We don't have anything.
16:01We don't have any phones.
16:02So we're just going with local knowledge, which obviously completely sent us down the wrong ways.
16:08But literally down the wrong way.
16:10Into a spot of trouble, actually.

21:30a savvy business.

22:06And they were just all so awkward and polite.
22:09I mean, if I was there, I'd have picked the guy up with the Air Who and taken him into

22:17Because I think your manners are also impeccable.

22:20It was like time slowed down and they were all twiddling their thumbs and they did attempt
22:26to interject a couple of times, but he was like in a meditative zone.
22:31I think you have to find a way to be able to intervene in a situation in a way that doesn't
22:36offend people, but does remind them that you are on a very, very strict deadline.

22:42No, I didn't know what it was.
22:44So did you think, Nikki, bring back your guys, you were like, oh, phew, starting to
22:48melt slightly.
22:49A little bit, yeah.
22:49Like, I was fully expecting them to be like, okay, Georgie's coming back, cool, I'm aware
22:53of that.

22:54And then Nikki would bring back one of her guys and then they would squabble together
22:57and then I would just charm Lord Sugar.

23:00And get the stay, you know, that's what I thought was going to happen and it did not
23:03go the way that I'd hoped.
23:04I didn't really see you say the reason you shouldn't be getting rid of me is blank,
23:09bang and bang.
23:10That is a regret because I was so focused on trying not to upset the girls that were
23:13next to me, right?
23:14I was so focused on them and their feelings and their future and their businesses and
23:18everything.
23:18I wasn't thinking about me.
23:19And in hindsight, who would you have nailed?

23:29I just think I needed a lot of help with figuring out where we were and what we were doing and

23:43So maybe a bit more help from all of them with directions.
