Essence speaks with Miss Lawrence about Black Queerness
Transcript
00:00What was this person? What was this gay person?
00:02Oh, were they trying to trick a date?
00:03Or were they trying to trick their man?
00:04Were they trying to, you know, pass as something else
00:07and then they got caught?
00:08That shouldn't be the question.
00:09The question is, why are we killing one another?
00:11Why are we hating on one another?
00:13And then when it happens,
00:14why are we not standing with one another?
00:22I think, you know, I think the reason there's,
00:24it's taking some time to see more black queerness
00:27in film and television
00:28is because of our own false ideologies
00:31of what it is to be a black man or to be a black woman.
00:35And I think for so long,
00:37whether the vehicle was the black church or whatever,
00:41wherever the teachings came from,
00:43you know, a lot of us in the black culture
00:46have said that it is not okay to be expressive
00:51if it is not of societal norms.
00:54We have got to hold our allies accountable
01:00for not standing with us when these occurrences happen.
01:04So for instance, when you've got certain celebrities
01:08that will make irresponsible tweets about, you know,
01:12if their child was gay, what they would do to their child,
01:16what you're doing is inciting violence.
01:18Whether it's physical or mental,
01:20you're inciting violence and a certain discomfort.
01:23And you're also perpetuating this idea
01:26that it's okay to dehumanize someone for being gay,
01:29especially black and gay.
01:30So we have to start there.
01:32And starting there is starting in the homes.
01:35Shows like Star and other shows
01:37that really highlight black queerness is important
01:42because that is where you meet people in the homes
01:44on that television screen.
01:46When there's a new death or murder
01:49of one of our trans sisters, our brothers,
01:52that it is highlighted more
01:54on these different social media platforms
01:56and that's hold our allies accountable.
01:59You know, if you've seen this, you know,
02:02why didn't you speak on our sister over here
02:05who just was murdered last week
02:06for being, you know, a trans woman?
02:08Homophobia, it spreads across all lines, okay?
02:12The reason for me it hurts worse
02:15to experience it in a black space
02:18is because that is where, that's home.
02:21And home is where the heart is.
02:23And if you're denying me in my own home,
02:27that is, that's heartbreaking.
02:30Where else do I have to go?
02:31I expect to be discriminated against
02:34and, you know, have a back turned on me
02:38from other lines.
02:39But from my own, when it was done to you,
02:43when it was done to our ancestors,
02:45that is what's painful.
02:49That's what's most painful.
