Transcript
00:00I'm Cori Murray, and today on Essence Live, our woke cover girls are here and ready to
00:10inspire you to take action in your communities.
00:13Our girl, Julie Wilson, and celebrity stylist, Rory Vice, have the hottest shoes for spring.
00:17Plus, it's the return of Slade or Shade.
00:21But right now, it's time for the hot list, the biggest stories you're buzzing about
00:25today.
00:25Now, here's some good news.
00:30To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Lemonade, Beyoncé has announced the Formation Scholarship
00:35Program for women who are, quote, unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative,
00:40conscious, and confident.
00:42Interested?
00:42Here are the requirements.
00:44The scholarship will be awarded for the 2017 to 2018 school year.
00:49You must be a female studying creative arts, music, literature, or African American studies.
00:53There will be four scholarships awarded, one for each participating college, and those
00:58schools are Berkeley College of Music, Howard University, Parsons School of Design, and Spelman
01:04College.
01:09Damn, damn, damn!
01:11One of our favorite couples is breaking up.
01:14Actor and activist Jesse Williams and Aaron Drake-Lee, his wife of five years, are getting
01:18divorced.
01:18The two met when Jesse was a schoolteacher in New York, and he stated publicly how much
01:23he loved her intelligence.
01:25But wait, some of y'all are already trying to sneak into Jesse's DMs.
01:29Hovey wrote on Facebook,
01:31Aw, that's sad, but here's my chance.
01:33I feel horrible, really.
01:35Mm-hmm.
01:36Sharonda Lynette replied,
01:37Don't feel bad.
01:38I thought the same thing.
01:39He's fine, loves black women, and works hard to empower and uplift black community.
01:43Hell yeah, I'm jumping on that like a drunken prom date.
01:46Really, y'all?
01:47It's Tuesday, April 25th, and Essence Live starts now.
01:58Welcome to Essence Live, and you can watch us right here on Essence.com and Facebook every
02:03Tuesday at 3 p.m.
02:05Hey, y'all.
02:06I'm Entertainment Director Cori Murray, and remember, you can holler at us anytime using
02:10hashtag EssenceLive or email us at EssenceLive at Essence.com if you want to sound off on topics.
02:15And speaking of sounding off, it's time for a little Slade or Shade.
02:20Joining me today are Beats 1 Low.
02:22Hello, how you doing?
02:24Our very own Senior Lifestyle Editor and my podcast co-host, Charlie Penn.
02:29Hello.
02:30And New York's Hot 9-7 digital producer and personality, Scottie Bean.
02:34Hi.
02:34If you've been on IG at all, then you're fully aware that prom season is underway, and these
02:39are prom goers, and these prom goers are definitely showing out.
02:43Florida teen Milan Bolden-Morris decided to shut down the prom dress game all the way
02:49down when she wore a Black Lives Matter-inspired dress that featured images of African Americans
02:53killed in police-involved incidents, including Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, and Michael Brown.
02:59Milan told a local news station that she received an overwhelmingly positive response on social
03:04media, and that Trayvon's mom, Martin, even thanked her.
03:08But was prom an appropriate place to rock a dress like that, or is it getting too political,
03:13or is getting political with fashion a good thing?
03:15On three, are we slaying or shading this Black Lives Matter prom dress?
03:20One, two, three.
03:23I'm going to go with Low first.
03:25I'm just happy that the kids of today are actually speaking out on subjects that are important
03:29to them that are close to their age range, because we always complain about how the younger
03:33generation doesn't care, they're not doing their research, they're not mindful of things
03:37that are going on, but you look at a platform like the prom, that's the biggest platform
03:41that they have.
03:42So for her to take a gamble, and you want to slay, you want to have the biggest car,
03:46the baddest dresses, for her to use that platform to have that message, I applaud her 100%.
03:51All right.
03:52Scotty.
03:53Yeah, I say Slade, because she is a high schooler.
03:58And I totally believe in what Low is saying, and it is the appropriate place.
04:05I just hope she's not doing it to go viral.
04:09And I don't know that.
04:10I don't know what her motive was.
04:12I'm going to respectfully, positively think that this motive was for good, and that is it.
04:19But sometimes kids these days like to go viral, and they want the followers, so they will think
04:25of doing anything to put anything on, but I just hope that this was, she was doing this
04:31to raise awareness.
04:33That's it.
04:34And you know, I'm totally, she's a high schooler, so I'm going to be positive.
04:39Okay.
04:40Sorry.
04:42Your truth.
04:43I'm going to.
04:44Charlie.
04:45I'm Slade.
04:46Fashion is art.
04:48You know, it's meant to be, art is meant to be political, expressive, and that's the
04:52way she wanted to express herself.
04:53I remember her caption, I think, said something like, I wanted to be a vessel for this message.
04:58And like he said, your prom is your biggest moment as like a 17 or 18 year old.
05:02So I'm proud of her for taking a stand against something, and something that's important to
05:07her.
05:07And everybody's talking about it, which kind of going back to what I was saying earlier,
05:10anything that spreads awareness and information is a Slade to me.
05:14Yeah.
05:14All right.
05:15Kayla, what are folks saying about Milan's woke dress?
05:17People are slaying it.
05:19They love it.
05:20Lila Victoria says the BLM dress was appropriate for prom.
05:23The memory of lives lost was able to live on thanks to her.
05:26Melissa Foster is also slaying.
05:27New generation is very selfish, she says, so she was bringing more awareness in her own
05:31way.
05:32Marissa Clark says she slayed.
05:33Teenagers should be politically active.
05:35Esther Harmon says keep it on the forefront on people's minds.
05:39Nice.
05:39Panelists, thank you so much for joining us.
05:42Coming up, we're talking with two ladies from our woke 100 list to find out how we can all
05:47be activists.
05:48But first, Empire star Soraya reveals how she first fell in love with her natural curls.
05:58To be completely honest, growing up, I hated my hair.
06:02So anything straight or not like my hair, I was about it.
06:13Obviously, that's changed a lot.
06:15My mom, she just always told me that my hair is beautiful and to love it and people pay for
06:20this type of hair and all that kind of stuff.
06:23And I understand it now, but then I was like, get it away, please.
06:26When I booked a role on Empire and my character wore curly hair, that was the year that I decided
06:33to like really grow back my curls from all the heat damage and just everything I've been
06:37doing to it my whole life.
06:38It just made me love my hair.
06:40Actually, my favorite hair moment, I'm trying to get back to that moment, was BET Awards
06:44a few years ago.
06:46I wore a similar cut to this and it was all curly.
06:49That was like one of my favorite moments.
06:51My other favorite moment has to be, ooh, oh, when I do like the long ponytail and recently
06:58I've started doing like the textured long ponytail, so that is my favorite because I still feel
07:03like me, but extra me.
07:08Black is beautiful means so much.
07:11We come in so many different colors, shapes, sizes and textures and things like that.
07:17And my black is beautiful means embracing whoever you wake up as and embrace our black beauty.
07:30You're watching Essence Live and I'm entertainment director Corey Murray.
07:33And one of the best parts of my job is helping Essence cover, helping with Essence covers.
07:37And this May is something else.
07:39We're honoring 100 woke women across various fields from the celebrities who use their platforms
07:45to raise awareness to the everyday women who started the Black Lives Matter movement.
07:49And joining us are two women from that list.
07:51Please welcome in-studio creator of the viral hashtag, Oscar So White, April Rain.
07:57And VP of National Community Alliances for Teach for America, Brittany Packnett.
08:02Also joining us via Skype.
08:03Hey, ladies.
08:05Hi.
08:06All right, I just want to show you all this.
08:10What were your thoughts when you got the issue?
08:13Brittany, tell me.
08:15Oh, my goodness.
08:16I mean, completely overwhelmed.
08:17I still remember the 30th anniversary cover for Essence.
08:22It was also a group photo of women like Halle Berry and Michael Michelle and Queen Latifah.
08:28I used to have that cover up on my wall.
08:30And so to think that I am less than privileged to be a part of this kind of history is completely overwhelming.
08:37And it's amazing to be on the cover with women who are really friends, women whom I admire, who I respect, on the cover and all throughout the list.
08:47And what about you, April?
08:48Today is the first day that I've actually held it in my hands.
08:52And it's very...
08:53Don't do it, because I like it all.
08:55But it's surreal, you know?
08:58And I could never...
08:59I can't even say beyond my wildest dreams, because this is not even anything I could have ever dreamed of.
09:04So I am honored and humbled to be in the space with so many women that I look up to as inspirations.
09:12And, you know, I just hope that we all can live up to the standard of being, you know, of the first Woke 100.
09:18Now, people think that to be woke or you have to do something special to become an activist.
09:23But tell us your story.
09:25What inspired you to do Oscars So White?
09:27You know, there isn't a story.
09:29I really wish there was something sexy, like, you know, we were sitting around our boardroom, and I was deciding what I was going to do next.
09:35And we said, yes, this is what we're going to do.
09:37No.
09:37I was half-dressed in my family room, watching the Oscar nominations on the biggest TV that we have, because it was Chris Hemsworth, Thor.
09:48And so I needed him in HD.
09:50Yes, I understand that.
09:51So that I could see everything that was going on there.
09:53And category after category, there was a lack of marginalized communities.
09:58And so I took to Twitter.
09:59I just picked up my phone, which is always right there.
10:02And just the very first tweet was, Oscar So White, they asked to touch my hair.
10:06And then I went on to work, not realizing that this was going to be a worldwide movement and a campaign to increase inclusion in the entertainment industry.
10:17Wow.
10:17Thank you for that.
10:19Brittany, you were one of the first people on the ground in Ferguson after Mike Brown's murder.
10:23What was the moment when you decided to stop talking about issues and actually do something about them?
10:28I was raised by two activists and community leaders.
10:33So Ferguson was not my first protest.
10:36But it was a moment I feel like I was prepared for my entire life, alongside thousands of other people who recognized it was not enough, like you said, to simply talk about it.
10:48But we actually had to put our bodies on the line for what we believed in as generations before us have.
10:53And those days were scary.
10:55They were nerve wracking.
10:57There were many nights that we didn't know if we would make it out alive.
11:01But at the end of the day, we had to love ourselves enough and one another enough to show up.
11:05And there's so many ways that people can show up.
11:08People can show up in the way that April did and does every single day.
11:11People show up with their art.
11:13People show up by being excellent educators.
11:15People show up in their houses of worship.
11:18And so whatever way you decide to show up, we have to make sure that we're doing it with integrity.
11:24We have to make sure that we show up consistently.
11:26And we have to make sure that we show up with the level of dignity that demands that people respect that.
11:35You know, when you speak of showing up, showing up, we're thankful that you guys show up.
11:40But there's also this thing of your safety.
11:42Have you ever been concerned about your safety because of your activisms?
11:46It happens from time to time.
11:49I know there are others who are definitely literally on the front lines of the Black Lives Matter movement
11:54and the women's movement that are dealing with those issues all the time.
11:58For me, I think it's mainly just because of those regular trolls.
12:02And so you sort of have to put precautions into place.
12:04Like, very often I won't tweet that I'm out of place until I'm about to leave that place so that I don't give a lot of notice.
12:11But, you know, there's something about women, especially Black women, who are hyper-visible.
12:18And so we have to be just smart about what we're doing, what we're saying, where we are,
12:23and, you know, just being very mindful of our surroundings at all times.
12:26How would you suggest that more people can get involved with a cause that's close to their heart?
12:30You know, it's really easy.
12:32I mean, Oscar So White started with one tweet.
12:35I think the most important thing is to pick what you're passionate about and speak out about it.
12:41You know, I have an obscene number of Twitter followers now.
12:44I didn't two years ago when this started.
12:46But I was factual.
12:49I was consistent.
12:50I was passionate.
12:52I was authentic.
12:53And I think if you do those four things, if you have those four things in mind,
12:57that you can do anything that you want to.
12:59You know, it's different now because we have social media.
13:01So you literally don't have to stand on a corner with a soapbox anymore to get your point across.
13:06You can go on social media, whatever platform you choose, and really make a difference.
13:11And so I encourage everyone that feels strongly about something to speak out with their voice and to make it heard.
13:19Thank you, April.
13:20Brittany, you know, we did two cover shoots.
13:22One was in Los Angeles.
13:23One was in New York.
13:24Brittany, tell me about the sisterhood you felt at the New York cover shoot.
13:28It was incredible.
13:29We were in the room with the women who led the Women's March.
13:35Tamika and Janae and Carmen and Linda.
13:38Joy Reid was there.
13:40And we got to sneak a peek at some of the L.A. pictures.
13:44And so certainly it was a moment of sisterhood.
13:46I think we were all excited and completely humbled to be in this space.
13:51But then to be in this space with people that you really respect, people that you've built friendships with,
13:56and who really have each other's back virtually and in person as we continue to do our work, it means so much.
14:03Those were really special moments that I will take with me for my entire life.
14:07And I think that what April said is so important.
14:10You know, none of us started our work with the intentions of being on a cover, being on a list like the Woke 100.
14:16We did it because we wanted to live in our purpose.
14:20And our purpose is the place where our passions and our talents intersect.
14:23At the end of the day, you had a purpose before anyone had an opinion.
14:27And so when it's time to be woke, when it's time to show up, remember that operating in your purpose is bigger than what anybody could ever say.
14:34You know, I'll share this when the Women's March people came to, women came in to do their video.
14:40Immediately after the cameras cut, Tamika was like, okay, we're renting a car, we're going to Albany.
14:45Like, it was like, they're, like, this is not a, this is work for them.
14:49This is work for them.
14:50So I love that.
14:50April, you're going to be joining us at a little festival in New Orleans.
14:54In July.
14:55Can you tell us about it?
14:56Yes, I am honored and incredibly excited to be presenting at Essence Fest this year in New Orleans in July.
15:04And I cannot wait to share the stage with so many amazing people, see the artists come out for the evening performances.
15:12So it's going to be fantastic.
15:14If people can come, please do.
15:16Remember that all of the daytime with all of our woke Wonderland things that we're going to be doing will be free of charge.
15:23So if you're in the New Orleans area or can get there, please share with us.
15:26And you can find all that information on EssenceFestival.com.
15:29All right, you heard it.
15:30Get your tickets at Essence Festival.
15:32And so you can meet April Rain in person.
15:34Thank you for being here.
15:36You both are doing such great work.
15:38Remember to buy the May issue of Essence to see all the women on our first ever Woke 100 list.
15:44I'm going to hold this up.
15:46Yes.
15:47Coming up, we've got a look at the hottest spring shoe trends with Essence fashion director Julie Wilson and celebrity stylist Rory Weiss.
15:54And you don't want to miss it.
15:57Speaking of Essence Festival, here's a look at who you can expect on the main stage and the super lounges this year.
16:32Hey guys, my name is Phoebe and you are watching Essence Live.
16:55Hi, this is Samantha and you're watching Essence Live.
17:05Hey, Essence Live.
17:06I'm fashion and beauty director Julie Wilson and it's time for Ready, Set, Fierce where we showcase fabulous fashions.
17:14And this spring, it's all about statement tops, bold rainbow colored stripes, and of course, oh so chic shoes.
17:22Here to talk about the hottest shoe trends you should be buying this season is celebrity stylist and my friend, Rory Weiss.
17:30Hey love, welcome back.
17:32Thank you for having me back.
17:33I feel you're getting down with your ready, set, fierce.
17:35Definitely.
17:36Well, I really want to get into all of the shoe trends we should be wearing this season.
17:41But what's one trend that we had last year that we should probably retire for this year?
17:46There's always one to retire, right?
17:48So this season we're going to put away the gladiator sandal.
17:51It's kind of a conflict with the sleeves and things that we're working with this season and the bright stripes.
17:56It's a little confusing and overwhelming.
17:58So we're keeping it hot with these trends that we have going on this season.
18:02Okay, good.
18:03That'll still keep you in style.
18:04You can put them away.
18:04Maybe they'll come back at another time.
18:06But for right now, we're going to put them up.
18:07I wore my gladiator sandals to death last season.
18:09You and every other girl that I know.
18:11Good, good.
18:12Okay, so what should we be wearing?
18:13What's the first trend we should be wearing this season?
18:15Well, the first trend that we're looking at is sliders.
18:17We've got two really great pairs here.
18:20The first pair that we're dealing with are the fun tassels.
18:23Yeah, I love this.
18:24The tassels that are on.
18:25And that's what I love about what they're doing with sliders.
18:28Like, there are fun elements to it.
18:29It's not just your average slip on.
18:31The snake skin.
18:32The metallics that are in there.
18:34The silver undertones.
18:35Really great.
18:36And those are at a really great price point, too.
18:38Because you've even got the suede.
18:39And look at this furry moment.
18:40I love.
18:41Now, this right here just makes me really happy.
18:45The pajama chic movement is one of my favorites.
18:49I have a client.
18:50She loves to wear pajamas as long as she's comfortable.
18:52Even in wearing, like, the oversized shirt dresses and stuff.
18:55These are really great.
18:56The only thing I would like to suggest is that I not see women out here wearing body-conscious dresses.
19:03With the furry fleece.
19:04I've seen it, and it just drives me, like, absolutely bummed.
19:06Well, can you wear these type of things, like, at work?
19:10Can they be dressed up for the professional setting?
19:12Well, you know what?
19:13This looks really great with a tapered leg.
19:15So, I would love to see the tasseled shoe with a tapered leg.
19:18You can dress it up with a nice blouse and make a good time at work.
19:22Now, the furry slippers, that's...
19:24Well, depending on where you work.
19:25Well, if you're a fashion and beauty director.
19:26But if we're going to the office, I don't want to see you in a furry slipper.
19:30You might not keep your job.
19:32So, let's put those to the side.
19:34Okay, so what's the next trend?
19:35Well, the next trend we have is the flat form.
19:38Wow.
19:38I love these.
19:39This is an amazing way for women to get height without having to wear a heel.
19:44Because I, you know, I used to be a really big fan of putting really tall heels on my clients,
19:49and then they would look at me, and they're like, really?
19:51My feet are killing me right now.
19:53And it's like, okay.
19:54This is a great way to get that same type of height, though.
19:56Can they be too high, though?
19:58I mean, like, you don't want to start looking like Frankenstein.
20:01I mean, there's a little bit of flat form for everybody.
20:05So, the higher you want to go, you know, what do they say?
20:07The bigger your hair, the closer you are to go.
20:08Yeah.
20:08So, the same with your flat form.
20:09The bigger the flat form, the closer you are to God.
20:13There you go.
20:14So, we've got these fun velvet sneakers.
20:17Like, this is great for the weekend when you're just out with the fam,
20:20and you want to just step your outfit up a little notch,
20:22and you might have on shorts or, you know, a cute little white t-shirt.
20:25This is a fun way to do that and still, you know, have a little chicness in your wardrobe.
20:30And then these ones.
20:31I love, who doesn't love an espadrille in the summer?
20:34And you get it in the flat form, so you still get that comfort, but you also get that chicness.
20:38Like, I love this whole, this is a great replacement for the Gladiator.
20:42You're getting the Gladiator ankle strap instead.
20:44And again, this is a wonderful price point.
20:47Like, TJ Maxx and Marshalls, they do an amazing job with that.
20:49And this looks like it could go with anything you're wearing.
20:51It does.
20:51You can do this with a great pair of jeans.
20:53Bell bottoms are a big trend right now.
20:55This is amazing with a maxi dress.
20:57You can even do it with...
20:58Right, to give yourself a little height so the maxi dress doesn't drag.
21:00But your feet are still...
21:01Boom.
21:01What?
21:02Comfortable.
21:02Yes.
21:03How about that?
21:04Okay, next trend might be my favorite trend of the whole season.
21:07So, let's talk about this.
21:09Well, this is the denim trend.
21:11Yes.
21:12I love denim because denim goes with everything.
21:15Everything.
21:15I'm a fan of the denim on denim.
21:17Mm-hmm.
21:18Let's denim it out and do it together.
21:19The Canadian tuxedo, it's called, right?
21:21I forgot about it, okay?
21:22And so, here we have yet another play on the espadrille bottom.
21:26But these are slip-ons.
21:27These are easy.
21:28You can fly with these.
21:30When you're traveling in the airport, they're easy to put on, easy to take off.
21:33And you can wear them with a crisp white shirt.
21:36Or you can do your whole denim on denim moment.
21:38It's great.
21:39It's perfect.
21:40And these ones, the heels.
21:42This I love because the heel on the back is just so, like, it's a great take on the wood panel.
21:48With, like, wooden bangles and things like that are a big comeback.
21:51And then you've got the whole tan piping on the shoe.
21:55And this is also great as a transition from day to night.
21:58So, it's a really fun shoe to have.
22:00So, can you wear this with the tuxedo, the Canadian tuxedo?
22:03Like, if I'm wearing a denim top, jeans, can I also wear denim shoes?
22:07Absolutely.
22:08Okay.
22:08Take it from head to toe.
22:09If you say I can do it, then I'm going to do it.
22:11You can do anything.
22:12Okay.
22:13Just remember that.
22:14Okay, good.
22:14But that you can definitely do.
22:16I mean, it's a look to rock.
22:17And you'll be the envy of the town.
22:19Yay.
22:19Okay.
22:20What is the last trend that everyone should be kind of looking out for this season?
22:23The revamped mule.
22:25So, we're used to mules being in the high heels.
22:28Right.
22:29We love a good remix.
22:29We do.
22:30I'm a 90s baby.
22:31So, I love that all day long.
22:33But this is a great way to wear the mule.
22:35I specifically love the fact that they're low.
22:38And again, it kind of fits into that slippery feeling that we were doing with the furry slippers.
22:43And it just takes it to another place.
22:46You know, again, there's no real support when you're wearing a mule and it's high.
22:50But this way, you're still getting that chicness, that pointy toe with the bow and the metallic
22:54as a way to dress it up.
22:55And if you're in between pedicures, perfect.
22:58This is perfect.
22:58Because you still get the comfort of a flip-flop, but you don't have to show your toes.
23:02Right.
23:02And it's like, oh, I need to get a pedicure if I haven't gotten one.
23:04I can slip on these fabulous shoes.
23:06Exactly.
23:06It covers the pedicure.
23:07And I'm still giving you on trend.
23:09Exactly.
23:10The bow, the metallic, it still gives it a dressy feeling.
23:13Because I love this.
23:14I would dress this up at night.
23:15Yeah.
23:15And the tan ones would be great for work.
23:17These are perfect for the office.
23:19These are perfect for every day.
23:20They're comfortable.
23:21I just have to tell you that when wearing mules and wearing the flip-flops, you've got
23:26to make sure that your feet, you know, are taken care of because they're closer
23:29to the ground so they can get really crazy on the back.
23:32You're like heels looking all.
23:34Make sure you get that good pedi.
23:36Yes.
23:36Scrub them heels down.
23:37Scrub-a-dub-dub.
23:38Because that can make this go wrong real quick.
23:40Yes.
23:40But no, I love this trend.
23:42I love that too.
23:43This is one of my favorites right here.
23:44Oh, good.
23:44Well, thank you so much.
23:46All of these options are fantastic.
23:48Let's go over our spring shoe trends one more time.

24:34But before I do, let's check in with our ear to the streets, or we're calling her today,
24:38Margarita Mama.
24:39What's up, Kayla?
24:40Hey.
24:41Okay, so earlier in the show, we discussed a Florida teenager who wore the Black Lives Matter
24:44dress, and the comments are still coming in.
24:46So Miriam Miriam says, I am all for young people being more conscious.
24:50I hated the dress, but I'm all about spreading the word in a nonviolent way, and I'm all for
24:54it 100%.
24:55I personally agree with Charlie.
24:57Fashion is art, and this was her art, and it had a message to it, so I support it.
25:01Herp, what do you think?
25:03Thanks, Kayla.
25:04And a special thank you to all of our guests for coming through today.
25:07If you've missed any of today's show, you can catch the replay shortly on Essence.com.
