00:00Today on Essence Live, Cassie spills the tea on her co-stars from the new film, The Perfect Match.
00:06We see how well Brandi knows her own hits with the game of Finish the Lyrics.
00:10And exactly, what does it mean to be ta-ta-talicious?
00:14I'm thinking they're talking about ta-ta, you know, and it's delicious.
00:19But right now, it's the hot list.
00:21The biggest stories you're buzzing about today.
00:23D.J. Khaled, he went on Ellen this week to talk all about the major keys to his success.
00:33And if you follow him on Snapchat, you know that those keys are a fresh green lawn and lions.
00:39And of course, that good old cocoa butter.
00:41But Ellen also wanted to know one more very important thing.
00:45Now, you say they a lot.
00:47Who is they? What do you mean? Who are they?
00:49Please, Ellen, stay away from them. Stay away from them.
00:52I want to know who they are to stay away from.
00:54They is the person that told you you would never have an Ellen show.
00:58You know, they is that one person in a room when you get a raise and that one person in the corner be like,
01:03man, I hate that person. You know what I'm saying?
01:06They are the people that don't believe in you.
01:09You know, that say that you won't succeed.
01:12You know what I'm saying?
01:12So we stay away from they.
01:14And, you know, they never wanted me on the Ellen show.
01:18And look at me, I'm on the Ellen show.
01:20You know what I'm saying?
01:20And this is the number one show.
01:24Mama, I made it.
01:27If you were thinking U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch was a shoe-win as the next Supreme Court justice,
01:32think again.
01:34The Department of Justice released a statement this week saying that Lynch has asked to not be considered for the position
01:39because it would, quote, curtail her effectiveness in her current role.
01:42The vacant spot on the Supreme Court has been open since mid-February when conservative Justice Antonin Scalia died suddenly during a trip to Texas.
01:50All right.
01:54Now, after Kim K posted a selfie showing off just about all her goodies, the Internet thought it was the perfect time, I don't know, to compare her to Ayesha Curry.
02:02So this whole whore versus Madonna thing still exists, apparently.
02:06Well, here's what happened when Chrissy Teigen alerted her friend to the madness.
02:11At Ayesha Curry, I hope you have security because every man trying to get them a you today.
02:16Ha ha ha.
02:17To which Ayesha responded with a laughing, crying emoji.
02:20At Chrissy Teigen, I don't even know what to say.
02:22I guess I can't say anything, actually, because I'm an adjective of some sort.
02:26And now, Amber Rose and Pink have jumped into the mix, dear, sweet baby Jesus.
02:31Is the backlash to Kim K's selfie just more slut-shaming?
02:34Is Pink right in saying that women should hashtag up your real worth?
02:38And what in the world does it mean to be thoth-thalicious?
02:41We're taking your comments and talking to Cassie next.
02:44It's Thursday, March 10th, and Essence Live starts now.
02:52Welcome to Essence Live.
02:56I'm your host, Dana Blair.
02:57Now, this Kim Kardashian nude selfie debate has reached almost epic proportions.
03:01We're still trying to figure out why people are shocked by anything Kim does, but whatever.
03:05But now, Pink is being called a slut-shamer for shouting out women who, quote,
03:09use their brains, strength, and work ethic.
03:11And Amber Rose is jumping to Kim's defense.
03:13Weren't they just beefing yesterday?
03:15I can't even keep up anymore.
03:17Well, we asked you on our Facebook page what you thought.
03:19And, of course, you did not hold back Essence family.
03:22Pamela Porter says,
03:24And Charlotte James agrees.
03:33Because Pink, who did not call out Kim K or Amber,
03:36just posted an open letter of her thoughts and opinions, it's shaming.
03:40These people are not allowed to own their own opinion.
03:42You must go with the herd or face the backlash.
03:45And we'll do one more from Kai McIver who wrote,
03:47Kim can do whatever she wants, but I'm just tired of seeing her naked body.
03:51Her ass made millions of dollars last year,
03:52but nobody knows that because her ass is always naked.
03:55I respect the woman's hustle, but put on some damn pants and a shirt, lol.
03:59Well, all right, well said, Kai.
04:00But speaking of slut-shaming and our new series, Just Sayin',
04:03we asked men and women alike to explain a term that has a lot of love and hip-hop fans scratching their heads.
04:09What in the world is Tha-tha-thalicious?
04:11Check it out.
04:12Tha-tha-thalicious.
04:18Tha-tha-tha-thalicious?
04:20Tha-tha-tha-tha-thalicious.
04:21How do you say it again?
04:22Does that mean the vagina is delicious?
04:24Is that what it means?
04:26They're talking about Tha-tha, and it's delicious.
04:28Tater thoughts was delicious.
04:30A thought is delicious?
04:31Because that would come from, like, being a thought, so, like, that hoe over there.
04:36And hoes are everywhere, so we're not talking about everywhere hoes.
04:39We're talking about that hoe over there or over there.
04:42So why would I want to be, like, hoelicious?
04:46Over there or over there.
04:49Give me a minute on this.
04:52Okay, so I, like, T-H-O-T.
04:55Then it kind of sounds like they drop off a few, like, letters, so they can be, like,
04:58T-H-A-T-A-dash-licious.
05:02L-I-O-U-S?
05:04L-I-C-O-U-S?
05:05L-A-C-I-O-U-S?
05:09Tha-tha-delicious.
05:11There's just so much going on.
05:13I don't even know how to say it.
05:13I don't know.
05:14It's radishes, basically.
05:17Any man can be called a Tha-tha-delicious.
05:19There are a lot of Tha-tha-tha-licious men roaming these streets.
05:23Most of them are, like, basketball players.
05:27Entertaining a whole bunch of different women.
05:29Two out there with your business.
05:31Always trying to be in the mix.
05:32Like the classic man, but Tha-tha-ah mixed with the classic man.
05:36You're gonna Tha-tha-ah so that be me.
05:38Like, I'm classy, but I'm also a Tha-tha at the same time.
05:41That's just doing a little too much and we don't need to know all that.
05:44everyone has like that one thought that delicious friend that kind of like when you want to step
05:51out they're down for whatever you call them i might be that person it's fine i'm newly single
05:56so i got on soul swipe couple of matches at a time willing dealing with this one willing dealing
06:00with this one date over here with this one that's not that delicious right there if you hit me at
06:04like friday night at like 11 30 and my thought that's delicious is going on but like on sunday
06:10morning you know like it's the press i like that hit me up at 11 30 what's going on you're watching
06:18essence live i'm your host dana blair and joining me now in studio is singer model and now an actress
06:23she stars in the new film the perfect match please welcome cassie ventura to the show hi welcome welcome
06:28it's so good to see you good to see you've been such a good sport we've been hanging out yes i've
06:32been learning a lot there's a lot happening here on essence live girl um so as you saw we were
06:36discussing the whole kim kardashian amber rose the slut shaming if you will um do you have any
06:41thoughts or opinions on that um well you know i've been talking a lot about it recently because
06:46of the film that i have coming out tomorrow the perfect match and um there's a bit of a twist in
06:51it where my character plays more of uh what the typical guy would be um and she just wants a casual
06:57sexual relationship um which i think you know in most situations that could be like slut shamed
07:05at the end of the day but um i don't really have thoughts on that particular situation no no i
07:11totally understand yeah um and as you mentioned the perfect match it comes out in theaters tomorrow
07:15and you star opposite terrence jay now what was it like having him as your love interest as well as
07:21your boss because he's an executive producer right he you know what terrence is one of the most
07:25supportive people ever and i've known him for a long time when he was at bete doing 106 and park he
07:29would interview me um when i would put new music out so it was so crazy to see us fast forward
07:34actually i think he posted a tbt today a throwback or whatever of us um hosting together on 106 and
07:40park like years ago but he's really supportive um always wanted to make sure that i was comfortable
07:46um and obviously the romantic part or like the intimate parts were there but just made me
07:52completely comfortable yeah i've seen some steamy scenes i mean you go from co-worker buddy buddy to
07:56like okay now i'm gonna kiss you half naked in a pool how do you make that transition well the
08:01there's no transition you just do it once they say action um but yeah i i have to say
08:08that at the end of the day with um you know in a scene and situations like that if you're not in
08:14love with somebody you're just not in love with them and then at that point for this film or anything
08:19that you do acting film wise you can make it work that's what it is um so take it seriously and
08:25you know obviously you're nervous but it's work you've got to go forward yeah now did you and did
08:30you have any conversations about it before you did the movie like okay i'm gonna have i'm gonna
08:33have some romantic scenes yeah with terrence what was that conversation like absolutely i mean i believe
08:38in communication right you know with anybody any and everyone even my mom i had to tell my parents
08:43about it too you're gonna see something yeah you're about to see something she actually saw it
08:47yesterday okay yeah she was you know supportive her and my father i just told my dad to close his
08:52eyes and stuff like that but um yeah puff actually didn't terrence was really nervous and i was like
08:59look maybe you should speak to puff because puff was so laid back and he was just like hey like
09:02you guys got to make it believable this is a movie this is your job your job let's sell this movie
09:07it's acting like you know and it was my first big role so i wanted to make it real what's one thing
09:13that you wish someone would have told you before you took on the lead actress oh wow that's that's
09:18a heavy position it's a heavy position to be in but i feel like um everything happened pretty quickly
09:23i went you know terrence called me um with yan lee from flavor unit was just like do you want to read
09:28the script you want to audition and i went out for it just like everybody else and um our chemistry was
09:33great but after that everything kind of went pretty quickly so we were filming within a couple weeks
09:38after that awesome so um yeah as as far as you know preparation went it was just like let's just
09:44go yeah and i think i felt better about it being that way because then i didn't really have to think
09:48too much beforehand and i could just go just go through it and now in the film lauren london's
09:52character she plays a bridezilla while preparing for her wedding um what type of bride do you think
09:57you would be is marriage in your future i would hope you know honestly i grew up my parents are still
10:03together they've been together for 34 years so i like admire them so much we were talking about it
10:07yesterday um you know i've always believed in the sanctity of marriage and um of course i think
10:13every girl wants to get married at some point i would hope it's in my near future my future would
10:18you be a bridezilla i would not be a bride any bridesmaid contracts i don't think i would have
10:22any bridesmaid contracts um lauren and i were talking about it on radio the other day and she's
10:28like i'm so not that and i'm like yeah i don't think i am either but it's you know obviously fun to get
10:33on your wedding gown and get down um so we're also going to have some other members of your
10:39cast join us but due to scheduling conflicts they were not able to but we had like a little
10:42fun game to play but now that we have a little girl chat time yeah we'll do a little something
10:47called spill the tea oh kind of like a hot seat questions about the movie okay kind of what
10:51happened behind the scenes because here at essence live we always like to hear what happened
10:54behind the scenes we want to know so out of the fellas on the film terrence jay donald faison
10:59and french montana who would you kiss mary kill oh wow
11:04still a fun game to jump right on into it oh lord i would marry
11:14terrence okay there's no wrong answer girl you know that's not me kiss donald and kill french is
11:23my brother so i just like what i have any sort of like what no all right so which cast member
11:30do you think is the most likely to have sex in public oh my word um and this does not confirm
11:37or deny anything right i would just go ahead and put myself in that position no i've never really
11:45had deep conversations with anybody like that except for the girls oh and i'm not gonna spill
11:49their team okay you're not gonna spill that have you ever had sex in public before no what had
11:55happened was okay which cast member constantly flubbed their lines um i wasn't there every day
12:04with everyone because when you see the film i'm kind of separate from everyone i'm trying to think
12:07everybody did pretty good because we were like living a real situation i can't really say okay
12:11that's fair enough that's the political that's fine which of your cast members could you see voting
12:16for a republican in this year's presidential election nobody nobody you heard it here i would
12:22hope nobody nobody sorry nobody message okay which male cast member is most likely to slip a little
12:29tongue to a female cast member during a kissing scene oh these are like really like i could get
12:36myself in trouble with these questions i don't know anybody well enough it's okay we'll just call
12:40them crease behind their back it's fine all of them she said all of them all of them did
12:44tarot slip you anytime no okay no tongue allowed no tongue allowed no well there we go all right
12:49well that's all the the round robin questions that i had that was fun that was easy thank you so very
12:53very much for stopping by you welcome back anytime it's time for a little girl chat yes all right so
12:58make sure you head to the movie theater tomorrow march 11th to catch the perfect match
13:02recently i caught up with brandy to talk about her latest single begging and pleading and to see how
13:08well she knows her own song lyrics take a look i want to play a game with you let's see your family
13:14now so now we're going to go for the fun stuff first okay this is called finish the lyric finish
13:19the lyric but it's your lyrics oh my lyrics it's your lyrics i'm going to read the first line and then
13:25i would like to ask you to finish the lyric you can sing it for me maybe kind of sort of okay first
13:30one just for the sake of my daughter tried to stick with the plan
13:34that's thank you i know this song but
13:42i don't know the first part but i have to get rid of the weight but i have to get rid of the weight
13:55yes okay okay all right so you're warming up now you're warming up all right here's the second one
14:00okay give me some donnie simpson
14:03um i'm uh give me some donnie simpson
14:07um okay no give me some donnie simpson
14:12that's all i got that's how i don't know the lyrics to that it's from turn it up on video soul
14:20where i got my video soul where i got my first attention yeah sorry baby oh don't don't
14:26it's okay it's okay season two okay and here's our third one but now that you're gone i feel so
14:33alone all i do is think of you until the day you return it doesn't mean a thing i don't know that at
14:39all it's from sunny day what's a sunny day without you just another 24 that passes by i know that yeah
14:47so i know that lyric yeah that was the that was the finish the lyric part yeah okay yeah
14:52we should not have played that game it's okay it's okay but it's a good segue into some new music
14:59begging and pleading i can finish the lyrics yes it's a phenomenal song it's a new sound for you
15:05yes we've all been waiting for music from you thank you talk to me about it what made you put
15:09this this uh piece out um i believed in it i really believed in it and i thought that it was
15:14the perfect time you know because my my fans they've been waiting for a while and i had this record
15:20for a minute and i was a little bit nervous to put it out before why um because it was so different
15:25and i was still in that space where i didn't want to disappoint anyone and and i wanted it to be
15:31right but i've gotten to a point where i i don't really care anymore i care about it meaning something
15:37to me and connecting from a place of of truth and honesty and that's a true story it's what i've been
15:45through and i i felt the need to share it and so we're going to hear this journey of brandy on this
15:52new album absolutely and when does that album come out um it's i don't call it an album i call it a
15:56movement and i don't want to say when because i've said when in the past and i've gotten you know
16:01you know social media yes it's like but you know fans have been very you know angry with me for not
16:07sticking to the planet and you know things move around you you don't have right life um but i i'm
16:12i'm here and i'm very very focused on this music being um true to my heart and true for me to just
16:20express myself the way i want to when are you going on tour because your fans want to hear some
16:25brandy let me get let me let me pull it all together and then i'm gonna get on out there
16:31on the road yes okay yes i have a lot of plans can i have a pinky promise i know i just talked about
16:36people holding you for sure okay i'm serious if you promise what else i'm gonna do okay i feel like
16:41when fans come up to you and they're like brandy you've touched me you've changed my life it shocks
16:45you or it takes you a bat how is it still after all these years and so much success and awards
16:52does it still kind of take you back on someone that you've carried me through a moment in my life
16:57absolutely absolutely and i i never i i pray that that never changes because it it just
17:02it feels amazing and then it feels like i don't know i don't i don't have the words to really
17:07describe that and um i don't i don't know maybe it's it's it's a humility that's come with
17:14so much of what i've gone through and you know a period of time in my life where i wasn't as grateful
17:20or as appreciative for things that were happening you know because things were happening so fast you
17:24know just being able to reflect and look back i'm just so thankful for everything and i don't take
17:29anything for granted so i think it's a little bit humble and then it's and it's like i don't then
17:35it's the word that i can't really come up with to describe what that feels like
17:39yesterday at the bar guy literally goes hey oj show me the money i was like really you stupid
17:49mother
17:49welcome back to essence live i'm your host dana blair you know i'm here every thursday doing
17:56what i do but we at essence live aren't limited to just this studio we're also out and about
18:01covering events getting celebrity interviews or just talking with you on the streets to get your
18:05thoughts and of course comments on current events recently our la correspondent alicia renee spoke
18:10with erica campbell to find out the future of mary mary we'll take a look at that in a few but first
18:14we caught up with the stars in the new tv show underground to find out why a show about slavery
18:19still relates to today we found this letter that was written by a girl in 1856 and she was talking
18:28about this exactly and she was talking about this this idea of to run or not to run she was debating
18:34that and for for us i think that kind of cracked open the character base for our series because
18:39that you look from a modern lens and you're like run run of course you run what are you doing and
18:45like just what she was talking about her entire family was there she'd never stepped foot off this
18:49plantation and i think that's when we start slowly really started to be like okay all right this is it
18:58i'm actually blown away we need this uh not only to be seen but to recalibrate you know to have a
19:07different perspective on slavery this show hopefully will continue to ignite and bring some type of pride
19:15to what we do um uh who we are i mean as as african americans um and with all the things that have
19:22been going on with police brutality with inequality that's still going on um it's very time the timing
19:30is perfect we we're still going through those things in 1857 till now which is very disturbing
19:37but i think because they're they're these characters aren't victims they are the revolutionaries
19:43it's a great reminder and it's going back to the core and the base of who we are
19:48to say there is fighting us who we come from um and and what they fought to to get to this point
19:54we know that reality tv can bring some tension with you know into a marriage you know i don't think it's
20:00the reality tv that's fair i think before you get on tv if you are not connected the tv will show stuff
20:07that you didn't know and so you have to be committed to conversations what i me and tina did with our
20:13whole family before we even said yes to reality tv we talked to everybody individually
20:17and we're like i need to know how you feel and where we are and are we good is there's some kind
20:22of feeling about what we do or you know i mean what's up you know um and don't say something on
20:28tv that you ain't said to me in real life after each season me and tina would have to sit down and have
20:32a come to jesus because she would be pissed yeah or i would be pissed like you ain't you know and i
20:39think in marriage and relationship and even friendship and sometimes these people that come together on
20:42shows they don't know each other they come together for the sake of the show you know and so they
20:46don't have history and they don't have love for each other so they taking jabs that's why they can
20:51do those reunion shows we've never done a reunion show because after we finish filming we still family
20:55yeah so you can't come together and ask me about something i'm still mad because i worked it out
20:59what can we expect from this season people watching the first three episodes they may be
21:03a little upset what can they expect to see give us some give us some
21:08um well i guess the bottom line of it is i want mary mary right now and she doesn't okay um
21:17you know i had time to do my solo thing darn it tina
21:21sorry y'all
21:23get it together tina um continue she's and we're back and we're back and we're back settled um
21:31she's doing her solo thing and it was all last year and she said she was gonna take a year
21:37and then we'll be back well now she's taking two years and i'm like that ain't what you said
21:40yeah um the label's not happy about it um you know people get wind of it try to manipulate the
21:49system and maybe even remove a mary okay so it'll be pretty interesting okay but at the end of the
21:55day we are family we love each other we stick together we gonna get this album out now look she
21:59go listen we gonna get this album it's gonna come i can't say when i wish i thought i thought it
22:07would be in tandem with this season yeah that would have been great
22:11hey what's up y'all i'm trevor jackson and i play kevin lacroy on abc's american crime and one of the
22:19hardest scenes for me to shoot was the scene where i was on the phone with um nikki who's a girl i was
22:24talking to and i was really just kind of taking in all of the hardships of being you know interviewed
22:29by the police potentially going to jail and um yeah it made me dig into a place of myself that i've
22:34never had to go before you should watch american crime why because it's awesome why because i'm
22:38in it no i'm kidding but it's a great show and it really just breaks down the walls of i feel like
22:43that so many people put up and it breaks down judgment and it just shows you know the real that
22:48people are afraid to talk about and i feel like everybody can relate to it and understand it and
22:52it's awesome watch it yo yo yo it's your girl kiki palmer and you are watching essence live
