02:09Bassett. We dished on some of her classic snapback moments on screen and she shares with us her
02:14latest groundbreaking project, video games. That exclusive is next. But first, if you haven't

02:29Winner talking about the life-changing experience she had.
02:37I stalk Essence's website. I'm a huge fan. So I was waiting for the contest to come around and
02:43I submitted a film that I wrote with a friend of mine named Anthony Phillips. It was a 15-minute
02:49short film about love and relationships and the cycle of pain and heartbreak.
02:53It was January that I found out that I was the potential winner and that in like a week or so,
03:01they would let me know if I had actually won. And immediately, I called my mom. I grew up reading
03:06Essence because of her. So it was just going to be like a huge honor. So I called my mom and then I
03:12probably cried because I'm a crybaby. When I went to the Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, it was amazing.
03:18You all have nourished my voice. And thank you is not a strong enough show of gratitude. It was a
03:25life-changing experience to be there and to be in the same room as all these women whose careers
03:31I've watched and wanted to emulate my entire life. Being here today is not only a dream come true,
03:37but a monumental step towards fulfilling my purpose. Being on a journey in the entertainment industry is
03:43really, really hard for so many different reasons, especially as a woman of color. But entering and
03:50winning a contest like this, it really lets you know that you're moving in the right direction.
03:56And sometimes that's all you need to keep progressing, to keep moving forward, to keep you waking up every
04:01day and to keep you going after your dream. And that's what this award meant to me. And so this contest,
04:06it's just a life-altering experience. Being in the Black Women in Hollywood luncheon room,
04:13you'll never forget it. And nothing will ever make you question your journey again once you've been in
04:19that room. So do it. That's the only thing I can think to say is do it. I've told everybody I know
04:25who creates to submit something. Yeah, it's worth it.
04:30I have the pleasure of being joined by Ms. Angela Bassett. How are you?
04:34I'm well, exceptional. Thank you, Dana. You are absolutely stunning.
04:38Thank you. I just have to start with that. As are you.
04:40In my head, you're a vampire and you hold the key to life and youth.
04:44Okay. How do you maintain looking so fabulous? You have such a busy schedule.
04:48I think a lot of it's attitude, you know? And of course, you know, the regular diet and exercise,
04:55blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Great makeup artist. But I don't do that every day. But yeah,
04:59yeah, I think a lot of it is the way you think. You know, or you may not know, you're a hashtag.
05:06Uh-uh. I'm a hashtag. Because you set Instagram ablaze. You were like,
05:11everybody's Women Crush Wednesday. I'll pull the picture. There's nothing else to say.
05:15You're the hashtag Angela Bassett arms. Oh, okay. All right. Well, I thank my trainer.
05:21Congratulations on being the first female six for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. I've been practicing
05:27that all day. What drew you to this project? Well, it came to me. It was offered to me. And
05:32when they said that it was the, you know, the first time that a woman is portrayed six in the
05:37books or the video game world, I was like, hi. I like that. Especially with, you know,
05:42women being 50 percent of the gamers, you know? That's a statistic that I heard. So I like that.
05:48Because a lot of times we just assumed, or it's the perception, is that it's mostly men who,
05:53you know, are the gamers. One of my friends, I was at a little party and the young lady,
05:59she's a college student. She came up. She was like, I know you're six. I was like, what? She was like
06:0521, 22. But she is deep into it. That's her world, you know? So I was very, very pleased that,
06:13you know, it's a woman, but a woman of color. And so, boom, boom, you know. Now, I get scared very
06:18easily. Okay, so I have to watch it too. I do too, as do I. I do not like horror films. Really?
06:25That's not fun for me. It's not fun. So what learned you to the American Horror franchise?
06:28Well, this is a little campy, you know. They can be a little campy and you can, you know,
06:33you know, tongue-in-cheek and rye and, you know, some of the issues that they deal with, you know,
06:38like when we were doing Coven, you know, really just all these women, you know, from Boston and from
06:44New Orleans and, you know. That was my favorite. Yeah. Yeah. Based on, you know, historical figures,
06:51it was very intent to mesh them in this world together and, you know, so I found it funny.
06:57On the show, you play Ramona Royale. I like that name. Um, opposite the Countess, played by Lady Gaga,
07:03and we know her as such a larger-than-life character from her stage performances, her extra costume,
07:08so on, so forth. So what was it like working with her in this different, I guess, more intimate capacity?
07:13Just wonderful. She's very warm, very engaging, you know, just light. She's a light being, light
07:19spirit. She's really sweet and the other day, just the other day on the set, I mean, we were sitting
07:24on a couch like this and just, just chatting, you know, and we just appreciate her artistry and she
07:31ours and it's just real, just real and regular. It's not over top and grand and sucking the air out
07:37the room and that kind of thing. She's so talented. Very extremely talented. She's so talented. And a
07:42really, really nice lady. I want to transition right now to Chirac. The film's poster just released
07:46and you're, there's a lot of controversy, if you will, over the content, over the title.
07:51Good. Can you tell me about your character in the film? I'm, I'm that community, you know,
07:56bookstore owner, you know, the, the one who's, you know, raised her, her family. She's from that
08:03community. She's from a certain community. She's there. She's rooted there. She has a business
08:07there, but almost like, you know, Ruby Dee and do the right thing or something like that, you know,
08:12looking out the window. Yeah, right, right. But for today, so maybe not that nosy, but if you ask,
08:19I do have an opinion. I'm going to, you know, give you some, give you some wisdom or some knowledge or
08:24whatever. So, um, that's how I saw the character. But yeah, um, despite being provocative, you know,
08:30a lot of times in our community, it's like, you don't want your slip showing or, you know,
08:34you don't want others to know, you don't want to hang it out there. We know this between our,
08:38between ourselves, between us and we understand and we know what the deal is, but we don't want the,
08:44the outward, outside perception of us because it, it will shine negative, negative light. But we need to
08:50because, you know, our, our potential is literally dying. Young babies, you know, our wisdom, grandmothers and
08:58mothers literally being, being killed. Kids, adults, young men, women who have never been a part of
09:06a gang at all, but you live where you live and it's, it's a danger, it's peril, perilous, you know,
09:14so, um, something, you know, what is that about? What is it about? Is it about a lack of hope,
09:21a lack of opportunity or, or what? So it's a conversation that needs, needs to be had,
09:26especially if numbers are greater than, than body bags from Iraq and Iran, you know? It's what?
09:34It's dry. On your own soil, in your own, in your own home, against your own people.
09:40Now you play iconic, strong women, and we've labeled it as women who always could snap back.

12:01asked about his alleged sex crimes now Kel's downright denied the allegations blaming them on his fame and
12:07on disgruntled individuals he fired from his inner circle but when asked do you have a sexual attraction
12:12to underage girls he responded that's a rumor that comes from the earth like all rumors like I thought
12:17rumors came from haters personally but whatever he continued no it's not true I love women period if I
12:24wasn't a celebrity people wouldn't be saying these things about me all right on the count of three
12:28are we gonna Slade or Shade this one one two three Shade Slade Shade okay Kim I'm gonna start with you
12:33why is it a shade well first of all he said it comes from the earth the earth I was listening to him
12:38until he said it comes from the earth no what comes from the earth is that weed he smoked before
12:42he answered the question that is very true and that stimulated the experience he felt yeah because I tried to holler at him oh
12:50oh he couldn't even see me he couldn't it couldn't yeah I don't want to know more about that
12:55I don't know about that one I don't know I've been knowing him for many many many years when he was with the group MCM MGM oh wow yeah he wasn't even R Kelly yeah okay all right okay we're gonna get that story a little bit later we're gonna get that story

13:49no yeah but he he won them over he knows he knows he was like oh what he won you have a shame yeah well
13:58you know I mean go in and the thing is you know I read the article and then that snippet went viral so
14:04I was like all right let me see what R Kelly had to say because no one has really his PR has been well
14:08it's shutting shutting that stuff down that response though like it came from the earth
14:13he might as well said earth you know what I'm saying because that way it would have made more
14:19sense but my thing is you could just say you know no comment maybe he said let's move on so he kind
14:25of did no shade no teeth kind of say like I'm I've moved on from that so maybe he's not into that
14:32no he could have said anything else but that that caused a whole controversy it brought everything
14:37it asked and created more questions yeah it created more questions because you didn't really
14:41handle it exactly you should have said no comment I need you to be quiet we're gonna put you in a
14:45school girl dress a minute and I'm gonna post you on his uh Facebook oh I got another one for you
14:52oh please don't please don't I don't want to get beat on well we're gonna move right along we're
14:57gonna move yeah we should because I love his music now he's a genius and that's the crazy part he
15:03is he's a genius all right so moving right along last week David Banner oh Kim last week David
15:10Banner stopped by Essence Live to talk about his new single Marry Me but of course that's not all we
15:14discussed Banner's remarks sparked an intense social conversation on our Facebook page with over
15:19200 comments let's check a couple out Anna Hutchinson commented it's time we realize that we ourselves
15:24are the problem stop hating each other and try to build each other up whites look at us the way they
15:29do because of the things we do to each other Dolores Stribbling said you want us to take personal
15:34responsibility then give us the same opportunity you receive we will take personal responsibility when
15:39our education is the same our housing is the same our employment is the same it is easy for someone to
15:44say take responsibility when the opportunity is there for you all right so let's take a look at what
15:48David had to say white supremacy only respects two things that's a loss of life and a loss of
15:56finances I was a money you said finance yes until black people threaten one of those two things they
16:03will forever continue to do what they do so instead of blaming an external source blame yourself because
16:10until we blame ourselves we will never change anything the things that are going on with our women with our
16:17own lives and with our communities we are the problem all right what do you have to say slay the shade guys
16:23I was a heavy hitter oh look we all got we all got tied we all like that was a heavy and you're on a
16:29slushƩ I'm on a that's what I am I'm on a this and a that you're on a slushƩ okay well Cole you seem to have your mind made up so why is it a shade
16:35because I understand where he's coming from his comments was very intense and there was some truth to it but I think that he's forgetting about no the racism didn't come from us I mean we we started with
16:46not the full hand like we were dealt a bad card as a race you know we we didn't get everything so the
16:53comment that that young lady said is she's true it's right Delores was on it yeah we didn't have the same
16:57opportunities we didn't have the same education I grew up in Texas I didn't have the same school that
17:02the kids in the nice neighborhood had I didn't have the same books I learned about Texas history I didn't
17:06learn about black history or anything like that so yeah we do perpetuate a bad thing in reality and in
17:13music but again you got to take it further back than where he's taking it yeah I'm in the present
17:18but come on like you know all right I'm slushƩ because I agree with what I agree with what he's
17:27saying because we do have the opportunity to change it right now anything that you need to know is on
17:33Google like you can learn through anything that you need to know you can Google it it's a day it's it's a
17:38moment away but I look at stories like my dad grew up in the projects of Rhode Island and he's now like
17:42one of the top execs at AP you don't have to your situation your environment doesn't have to tell your
17:48story for the rest of your life so when I hear those opportunities my dad used to get beat up for carrying
17:52books home and he made it out because he knew he wanted something more raise your children it does start
17:58with us it does start within our communities we have to raise our children we have to let them know that this
18:02isn't just the environment that you grow up with and we have to make sure that they not watching love and hip hop on
18:08Monday nights they should be watching Disney or something like why does your eight-year-old child know who
18:12Tia Maria is like that is a valid point like just do we we do need to do the work we're blaming everyone and I do I don't like the word blame I think we should improve
18:20improve yeah I don't like the word blame blame right it's I'm a slush a slush shade because I liked his beard that gray little goatee

18:37but this is the real deal is that I also taught school in Compton but where I send my son to school is a private school or it's in Sherman Oaks this other area and they have everything he can go swimming he can do this and I look at how I was raised you know I was in Cleveland Public School and then I moved over to Shaker and let me tell you something it is a
19:07difference so I tell you the books that the kids I had to teach with in Compton the no computers so there is a difference and I think about slavery we talk about we came over to this country and it's not like we have a culture like everyone else we're talking about the Chinese the Jews they have a deep history we are what 400 years African Americans we can't sit there and talk about yeah I'm from the tribe of Uber Uber
19:33there's no native Tom there's no culture in me I can't talk about oh and I learned how to weave this basket because we're from the we don't have that so it is it's about us now trying to form that but that that's a lot you want us just to change it is a lot of work it's a lot of work so I won't say blame us but we do have to work and go back to the village situation
20:01situation and you say black lives matter we also have to say black lives matter to us and when my brothers out there killing each other you out there marching against the police yeah what about when you did the drive-by black lives matter to us too so you have to always when you say take responsibility or blame we have to just go back to the way we used to be in in in in the 60s when we was all fighting for the same thing even our black families were together because we were all fighting for the same thing
20:31you know oh you mentioned you know you're raising a son with everything that's happening in society right now have you had to start to I know he's young but have you had to start to have some sort of conversation or have you start to formulate in your mind what that conversation will look like on how to carry himself if you will as a black man and maybe possible situations he may encounter as a young black man
20:54yes I'm hoping that by the time another 10 years things are better
20:58uh but as my father raised my brothers first of all we start with just our own protection
21:04uh my son should not know right now he's four years old right and he came home and he said mommy my skin hurts
21:11what that's because a little white girl told him his skin was ugly so I had to go up to the school of course you did and holler at him say I need to talk to those parents
21:19but you're dealing with another child who learned from somewhere right so I have to first now why am I
21:24teaching my four-year-old right having this conversation about color so so we start there
21:30and we talk about bullying so it even goes it's not even a black white thing or or a police thing
21:34it's just human it's a human thing so once we start with bullying and then I'm gonna have to explain to him
21:40because my my little brother got chased by the police my mama looks white she's not I know y'all said on the internet
21:45she is uh the police ran through the door and my mother answered the door and thought it was a white
21:50woman we lived in this certain kind of neighborhood and he's like there was a black there was a negro
21:54child because you know it was back in 1902 uh when there was a negro child running through your yard
21:59and we just wanted to warn you and you've been running and we almost got him well my black daddy came up
22:04behind her and all of us we was like what's happening what's happening no no who's not it where is he
22:09where is the negro child you mean this one my mom's like you mean this oh yeah he lives here he lives here
22:14so we went through that all the time but my brother could have been shot because he was so
22:19young he didn't know hold it hold he didn't know none of that what they say right so I think it's
22:23just it is what it is and just teaching first of all we all are supposed to obey the law the law is
22:31here for our protection right so if someone says hey hold it then you hold it now some of these crazy
22:38police I think really okay I'm not gonna get deep with this but how we change the police is in the
22:43training at the cadet level right from the ground up we gotta wait till the good old boys get on out
22:48but you gotta start a different training just like I look back at Sean LaVert in prison he died because
22:53they didn't give him his medicine right because the people trying to be the police so it's a whole
22:57we got a whole lot of work it's a deeper conversation so with my son I will have a conversation but I'm
23:02gonna have some I gotta have some brothers around my son some black men to talk to my son I'm a
23:07woman it's a different it's a different type of they talk they got a whole different conversation
23:10you ever sit back and listen to me and talk oh it sounds like Spanish don't it yes it does I go to
23:16the barber shop every week trust me yeah you and you're smart I know can you give me some tips
23:21all right now on to probably one of the most interesting slater shade topics we've had we're
23:28talking semen yes you heard me correctly not only are we talking semen but we're talking about ladies
23:34who use it as a part of their skincare regimen Kim fix your face and an article beauty blogger
23:38Tracy Kiss discussed the benefits of using her friend's semen according to kiss her friend kiss
23:44that's her name okay sorry her friend would freshly deliver his semen to her in a takeout sauce tub
23:50she then immediately apply it to her face rubbing it in ensuring that it absorbed into her pores and
23:55would leave it on for 20 minutes after washing the semen off she claimed her skin was left glowing and
24:00feeling smoother now I do want to add a caveat she would monitor what he was eating so that
24:05she only had the best ingredients okay so are we going to slay her or shade her on the count of
24:11three one two three slay or okay so we got a shade a slate Gia I want to start with you shade
24:22is that Corrine Steppenstein oh oh oh I'm picking it up for you that was a shade that was a shade

24:37takeout sauce sauces right ever again I'm gonna need you be careful with your gestures careful

24:52own thing uh I personally don't really want to use another person's yes on my face but if it works for
25:02her if she's happy with it fine but I just can't stop telling people what to do with that that stays
25:06with between you and your girlfriends at the dinner table you don't need to put it on youtube never
25:10accidentally just no I'm real just a little bit the way Jesus and and my goal I'm just my goal
25:17how do you have a whole nigga skin everything so you have a slave I did I have a slave you have a
25:23slave talk about it I mean I'm just saying like if you have bad skin maybe you'll try anything and
25:28it's it's it's what if you get some bad product that's that's where you have to like be careful you get

25:45particular point if he's delivering products that takes maybe she had she had a really bad

25:52I mean we'll be honest look at my skin what y'all think oh yeah bam bam so y'all know what's happening

26:10need to stop I mean okay this side of my face is usually the right side is a little tighter but uh
26:16I don't see just one time just say and when she get old my age she gonna have used it too
26:23she's just too young right now but no I think you know what they uh we use uh
26:29placenta from pregnant women we use urine uh we use goat's milk there's so many body stuff on people
26:35now that is I don't know right there I don't know if I want to put that on my face because I be thinking
26:42about the little tadpoles in there I don't know if they did I don't know what they're doing the
26:45little things like stuff yeah them little things be sweating all right yes I don't think you know
26:51if there's a test have we done any research no there's no there's no no so they just all nasty
26:57just nasty girls sitting at the table talking about look girl I didn't want to waste this
27:02I'm going to wait until it's FDA approved okay we'll wait until it's FDA approved but don't go anywhere

27:25the legendary Miss Patty LaBelle welcome welcome in addition to looking fabulous you're wearing this
27:31color for a very special reason this is turquoise the color of uh lung cancer awareness month
27:38November I have partnered with the American lung association I lost two sisters to lung cancer
27:45I realized that lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women more so than breast
27:53colon pancreatic cancer combined once you're diagnosed with lung cancer ladies you die within a
28:01year my sisters were diagnosed and within a year they both died they died two years apart but both
28:08from smoking lung cancer uh comes other ways but you know you can go to lungforce.org to find out all
28:14the ways that it can happen to you but my reason is to bring awareness go into your purse or whatever you
28:22have if it's a dollar you can go to lungforce.org and before November 17th give whatever you can
28:29because we need a cure for lung cancer and I hope not to lose any more friends or family members to lung cancer
28:36and when you see pink in October it's breast cancer awareness and I've even done things for breast
28:43cancer awareness because I have friends who died of breast cancer now I'm wearing this turquoise because
28:49I am the spokesperson for lung cancer awareness and I'm proud to wear this turquoise it's beautiful
28:55you look good in it thank you girl you're such an inspiration to an entire generation of black women
29:01and brown girls thank you for always being a beacon of life for us to see ourselves you've been slaying
29:07for 52 years any last message or uh information you'd like to share with black women especially around
29:14our health I'm really like dealing with this lung cancer initiative this is my my mission ladies die
29:22every eight minutes because there's no research and we need to raise awareness and funds I'm on this mission

31:21you ready it's a surprise one all right so you've been dating someone for three months
31:25do you bring them home for thanksgiving she's like you've been dating someone for three months do you
31:30bring them home for thanksgiving dinner slade or shade shade slade i just i'm not i haven't been doing
31:37well but you know slade kim i'll let you start first slade why is it a slice yeah three day number
31:43three months that's like 10 years at my age so we already we go together we engaged and we're about
31:49to have a baby we need to meet the family we gotta meet everybody poe what do you say slade i said slade
31:55because maybe somebody's putting it down like you know i'ma talk to her
32:02i feel it oh my god this one just got off the pole we're gonna work with her oh dang
32:09go do my girl poe like that and not that there's anything wrong with that either no not at all
32:14but i think you know somebody's putting it down it's good you can't judge somebody's love
32:18you know maybe back christmas they'll be broken up but maybe not they might be but then you'll find
32:23somebody else my next thing you can't judge it it's a rotation gia just final word i i i have a lot
32:29of aunts and my mama and they are black women to the core so at every single time i would talk to
32:35them afterwards they'll be like so what happened a little so-and-so and i don't if it's three months
32:39i don't we still getting to know each other especially if i didn't have like a girlfriend check
32:44before like my friends don't know like i need the friends first so maybe you can come meet my
32:48friends like thanksgiving night but you ain't coming in my house lies no i don't know i'm from
32:52louisiana my parents had to meet everybody my daddy always said he wanted to meet whoever i was dating
32:56so he knew the right one to take down amen he said if he used to say there's none of that honking
33:00and you go outside he said uh i gotta lay eyes i lay eyes you got to he's gonna kill me for saying
33:05that no no daddy right they want to meet them all because they want to make sure you ain't bringing
