Transcript
00:00Hello, and welcome to Essence Music Monday. I am Shawna Evans, and I am so happy to be
00:17here today. I don't know if it's just the Monday-ness of it, but it's 2020. So anytime
00:22we get an opportunity to experience any kind of joy, I'm excited. And every Monday, we
00:26are here at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, giving you new tunes, classic music. And today, I
00:33am just beyond myself because I am an absolute fan of our guest today. I'm not going to lie,
00:41I might be a little bit into stalking her. And I'm super hyped because she just dropped
00:46a new single, and so she's here to answer all of our questions and also hit us with a dope
00:51live performance. So without further ado, please help me to welcome Tweet.
00:56Hey!
00:57Hello! Hello, hello, hello!
01:00Hey!
01:01Oh my God, you look beautiful!
01:04Thank you! You got a little sam-sam, a little sam-sam.
01:07Oh, that's right.
01:10Thank you. Thank you.
01:11Well, listen, we should always start with this question, but most especially in 2020, it's
01:16pertinent. Sis, how are you? You know, I'm doing great. You know, even with what's going
01:26on, I've been able to just, you know, self-reflect, meditate. I think I've created some form of
01:34not healing, but some form of routine just to keep my mind sane from going crazy from what's
01:43going on, but I'm doing great. I'm doing great. Gained a few pounds, but I'm okay.
01:48Well, gained a few pounds, you look amazing.
01:52So don't let that faze you in any way.
01:55Yes, yes. Speaking of just like the self-care, self-reflect, you are kind of a little bit of
02:02an innovator and originator of self-care. Your very first single, Oops So My, was a little
02:09bit about that in a lot of ways. Yeah. Yes. A lot of people would have thought it was,
02:19well, they thought it was about something else, but I give people freedom to think and create
02:25whatever definition they want. But for me, the song meant self-love and appreciation. I remember
02:32watching a show. I think it was Oprah Donahue or Sally, Jesse, whoever. And the doctor on
02:40there talked about everyone in life needs to get in front of the camera or the mirror and
02:45love everything they see about themselves without wanting to change anything. And that's what
02:50that song comes from. But I know a lot of people think it's about something else. It's okay, too.
02:57That's all right. That's all right. Let them take it however they want. But now you have
03:02a new track out right now, a new single, Never Felt This Way, that just came out on Friday.
03:08Big up for that. Yes. So tell us a little bit about that. Because when I listen to it,
03:14I very much get like my place, heaven, taxi. Like that vibe took me back to that grown and sexy.
03:21Yes. Well, this song was birthed out of just finally meeting someone that showed me what
03:29unconditional love felt like. And that love me in despite of me being broken, despite of me
03:37not being completely healed yet, or despite me being a little angry at times, but still loving me
03:45from a place where they saw me where I was going, not where I was, not only where I was, but where I
03:51was going. And that takes unconditional love. And that's what that, I never felt that way before.
03:55I never had no one like give up on me or cheat on me or, you know what I mean? It's that type of
04:01love that was created, that helped me create the record. Oh, can I, can I pry just a little bit?
04:08Like, like with sisters. Can you tell us a little bit more about this new relationship and this new
04:14blossoming love? It's actually a friendship relationship. It's a friendship. And it's just
04:23like my best friend. I met him when I was really just speaking out into the universe and speaking
04:30to God and telling God I was ready. And I met him that same day. And that's why you got to be careful
04:36what you speak because you'll get what you speak and you receive it. So it's just unconditional.
04:42Like I said, there's nothing that we don't talk about. It's nothing that I have to be fearful of
04:47acting or, or being like, I just can be myself around him. And even if I'm doing something wrong,
04:53he's quick to tell me, you know, that's not really cool. You know what I mean? And I'm willing to
04:58accept it and move on at the same thing for him. So I'm learning not only to receive unconditional love,
05:04but to give it as well. That's amazing. Um, that sounds very much to me, like just being in a
05:13grownup relationship. Absolutely. Yes, yes, absolutely. Absolutely.
05:20Yes, yes. And your music has always kind of had a very grown and sexy. I would say that you're
05:26definitely a trailblazer in that regard. When we started talking about what it felt like to listen
05:30to music, I was grown and sexy. That was sweet. Oh, wow. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I really
05:38don't, didn't know how to either categorize my music. It's just music for the soul. That's not
05:44what I say. It's always, um, I always say it's like gumbo soul. Like one minute you're talking about
05:51how bad love is and the next minute, how great love is, love is, and then how you're confused about
05:56what love is, you know, so it's a mixture of everything. Yep. Sounds about all, about right.
06:02All this. Right. Right. Right. Now with this new single, are you working on a larger project? Like
06:12is it an EP or an album that we can expect? Because the track is fire. I love it. Thank you. I want
06:19more. Thank you. It definitely is, um, um, this song stems from when I released Charlene in 2016,
06:2817, I went straight into the studio and did another album. So this is songs from this album
06:33that we're putting out. We're going to do an EP. Hopefully we may just expand it into the whole
06:38album, but right now we're focusing on an EP with the temperature that the music business is right now,
06:45you know? Um, so we're going to do that, but definitely, um, this week we're doing, um, video
06:50for, uh, the two songs and release another single and then another one and drop the EP. So definitely
06:56bigger work. And so stay ready and stay tuned. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
07:10So what is it like, I guess, to be back in the studio and to, to be a part of, um, or to kind
07:17of be jumping back into with the industry having changed so much? You know what? Um, my routine
07:24never changed. You know, I've never paid attention to the climate of it until it was time to release
07:30it. Um, but other than that, me and my brothers, Nissan Stewart, Craig Brockman, Juboo, and Charlie,
07:37we always like sending music back and forth. Now we have to do that, but usually I'd be in LA and
07:42we're creating. So it didn't change my creative, um, mindset, but when it comes to releasing,
07:49you know, we had to switch gears and come up and figure out what's the best way to adjust.
07:55Right, right, right, right. Yeah. I mean, that makes sense. I, I just,
08:00we went from records to CDs and tapes to streaming. It's so different. Yeah. It's, it's, it's definitely
08:09different. Yeah. And then the last shows, you know, got all the book canceled. So it's like,
08:17you're right. Yeah. Right. And then COVID. And so then you have to shift gears again.
08:22Yeah. You have to adjust. Yeah. Yeah. Now I'm selfish. I have a few things that I want to know
08:30specifically about your skincare and your makeup routine. Like, come on, sis, you got to come up
08:35off these secrets. Cause you look like 1998 right now. And I want to know why I want to know how
08:42I keep it simple. Like I've, I've, um, done the same routine routine since I was younger. It's just
08:53soap. Like, and my soap now is all of all of LA, um, foam cleanser and moisturizer. That's all I use
09:00to cleanse my face. I don't do anything like all that other stuff. And it's just, it irritates my skin.
09:07Um, so, and as far as makeup, I rarely wear makeup unless I'm doing stuff like this.
09:12Other than that, you're going to see me bare face and with my sweat pants and my t-shirt on,
09:17you know, and my hair up in a bun or in a, in a, in a scarf, you know, but I don't do anything
09:23special, but like I said, all of LA, um, foam and, um, cleanser and moisturizer.
09:29Yeah. So you got, you got them jeans too. That's what it is too. Cause, because you know,
09:36you just gave Olay the plug. I've been giving them the plug for years. I mean,
09:42me like, let me be, um, uh, Olay girl. I'm like, yep, I'm with it. I'm, I'm pushing it,
09:50but I'm here for it. You look fantastic. Um, am I not mistaken? Did you just become a glamor?
09:59Like this, I will be second time around. My daughter's due any day now. Um, my first grandson,
10:06he's now eight. So I've been for eight years. I've been a grandma.
10:11No, I said a glam. Okay. You got to hold that.
10:17When you look like that. Yeah. And it's the best feeling in the world. I'm telling you, it is.
10:26That's incredible. And your daughter also sings, how does she feel about you?
10:29Kind of getting back into the music and back into the group as well.
10:33She's the one that really was when I was sitting around and not wanting to write or anything,
10:38you know, at those moments, because as artists, truthfully, we do go through those moments.
10:44She's like, mom, you gotta come on. People are waiting to hear you. So she's, she's so excited
10:50that I'm back in the saddle again, you know, you know, and trying, you know, to put some music out.
10:56Yeah. That's sweet. That's sweet. How do you balance it though, too? Because, you know, again,
11:03like it's a, it's a crazy game and it keeps changing. So with family and music and getting
11:10in the studio, how do you keep everything sane or keep yourself sane?
11:13Yeah. I've just been grateful and lucky enough that it just works. You know, our routine works
11:20usually because she sings too, like she was on the road with Solange when all of this happened
11:25and came home. So it just so happened when I had to leave, she was here when she, it just happened
11:31that it works for us. And then my parents have been, oh my God, so helpful in my life with her and now
11:38with her and her kids as well. So it just works. We just have a routine. It just happens. Yeah.
11:45That's good. That's good. That's blessed. Um, cause it can get crazy.
11:54We have a question on social media. Oh, this is a good one. So folks want to know, um, who you have
12:01or who you got for the Brandy versus Monica versus tonight? Um, I'm going to go ahead and say Brandy.
12:08I love Brandy. I love Monica too, but Brandy for sure. She has a different skill set that is just
12:15phenomenal. I love her. I love them both, but I'm Brandy, team Brandy. Sorry.
12:23It's going to be so epic. I think this is one of the biggest ones everybody is looking forward to.
12:28Yeah. It's man. The catalog on catalog on catalog. Yeah. It should be awesome. I can't wait to see it.
12:37Would you consider ever doing a versus battle? Um, I was asked this question before. I don't think
12:44I've created enough what people would consider hits and I have a catalog, but I don't think people
12:52would really know. I mean, um, if they have an underground, um, like me and Bilal, me and Bilal
13:01would be good. Okay. Okay. Cause yeah, I'm like, I'm listening to you and I'm shaking my head no.
13:07And I'm like, yep, you can and you will just cause it wasn't out as a single does not mean that it was
13:14not a hit. Okay. Cause we were still here playing it on repeat. Right. I couldn't, I don't know who,
13:23um, I really would just say Bilal, like Bilal just do it like a soul underground soul version or
13:30something like that. And do Bilal. That would be beautiful. And then end it with, um, the track
13:37that you both did together on your first album with best friends. We actually did another record
13:44on Chris Dave's, um, record called spreader wings. It's amazing. You have to, you have to hear that
13:50one too. It's amazing. I'm about to. All right, Bilal, you heard it. We just threw it out to you.
13:57Right. Yes. All right. Well, I'm sure the viewers are pretty sick of listening to me asking all the
14:09questions I want to know, um, because they also have come to see you perform. So I'm going to go
14:14ahead and turn it over to you. I'm also very excited for this. So without further ado, why don't you go
14:20and go ahead and give us a little something. And by the way, you know, we're, we're going to get like a
14:24very, um, strict, stripped down performance of you. Right. So I think this is going to be a
14:29little different than anything we've ever seen. And, and I'm excited. Yeah. I mean,
14:34with what is going on, I, I'm really, I really would love to be in person with, with all of you
14:39guys, but I'm going to make do with where I'm at and where, where we at in this world and all the
14:44sound stuff. So bear with me. Let me ask another question. Let me see if I can get this together real
14:51quick. Okay. No worries. I do want to know, um, who does your hair? Um, your hair is always over
14:58the years. It's been fabulous. And lately I know you've been rocking like, um, your beautiful,
15:02like natural styles and your braids. Yeah. Yeah. It's a young lady here called sangria. Um,
15:08she is, um, yeah, she's, um, has been keeping me on the up and up. So I'm excited that, um,
15:19hold on. I'm trying not to be, hold on, hold on. No, no worries. Go for it. Listen, they folks,
15:25this is how, you know, this is live. Okay. 2020 where anything can happen and everything can happen.
15:32So, so we, we get it together though. We get it together though. Yeah. Um, your hair. Yeah. Your
15:40hair has been looking amazing. It's been dope. Um, by the way, I just wanted to tell you, I don't know
15:48if you remember this, but you performed at the boss conference in Miami beach last year. And there was
15:55that one crazy lady towards the front that was singing really loud. That was me. That was me.
16:04I love it. I love it. Thank you. That was so, it was such an amazing, um, event to be a part of
16:12all the same. And just celebrating each other. It was amazing. But I think, yes. Okay. We got it.
16:20All right. Let us know. Are you ready? Cause we are here for it. Here we go. All right,
16:25guys. Enjoy. Y'all here. Good. I hope it's not for now.
16:34All right.
16:38You put a smile on my face, and if today's disappointment, I think of you and I won't care.
16:54See what I'm trying to do, I want all those to say, that you're my world of precious treasure, that's what you are.
17:18Oh yeah, I never felt this way before, I never felt this way before, since I found real, I never felt this way before, I never felt this way before.
17:47I never felt this way before, I never felt this way before.
17:49Can I take y'all back to Son of Hunter Bird real quick? Let me take y'all back real quick.
17:53Let me hear y'all sing that part. Y'all know y'all know the song. Let me hear y'all sing it.
18:13Let me hear y'all sing it.
18:25I hear love tonight, I swear I'm swimming, I'm over you, and I hear love you, joy in my face, my heart is like love, and I'm not sure, what do you need, I ask my mother to help me with this, and I can reach out your heart, that's real love, so carry on.
18:55I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love tonight, I hear love

22:47Hey, hey.
22:48Oh, my.

23:34That's enough.
23:39That's enough.
23:40Oh, God.
23:42It's so weird.
23:44I love it.
23:46I can see the joy in you, though.
23:50Like, you were having so much fun with it.
23:53And just, see?
23:54I wanted to get up.
23:55I wanted to sit down.
23:57Like, it's like I'm feeling confined, you know?
24:01Listen, you probably had a bunch of people in their homes not expecting that they were
24:10about to get up just now and start dancing and singing.
24:13Yes, the comment.
24:15Oh, they enjoyed it.
24:16They enjoyed it, the comment.
24:18Someone actually said, you are giving me life right now.
24:21I hope the music wasn't too loud or anything like that.
24:23Yes.
24:26You sound great, sis.
24:28I agree.
24:29Yes, we actually had a lot of questions, too.
24:32Some people wanted to know if you would collaborate with Missy again.
24:38Absolutely.
24:38We've been in talks.
24:39We're going to do some stuff for this EP, actually, and other things.
24:43We'll never stop working together.
24:45We were sisters.
24:46We've been sisters for a long time.
24:48I met Missy in 1994.
24:50So we've been friends before anybody knew who either one of us was, you know?
24:55So that'll never stop.
25:00I know that's right.
25:01And again, about the EP, like, what can we expect and when can we expect it?
25:06Well, you're going to expect the first song, Never Felt This Way, is, like, the whole vibe
25:13of the album, you know?
25:14So expect more of that, more of that sound.
25:18People are now saying it's like Southern Hummingbird again.
25:21So it's going to be on that Southern Hummingbird vibe.
25:25And I'm saying in the next couple of months, we're going to release some more singles, though.
25:30We're just going to keep it, keep releasing and keeping it up, keeping music and visuals
25:35out there for you guys.
25:37I'm excited.
25:38We're excited.
25:40We are excited.
25:43Fans also wanted to know if there's any artists that you would like to collaborate with right now.
25:49Oh, wow.
25:52Wow.
25:54I always, who was always top on my list is D'Angelo.
25:58I love D'Angelo.
26:00Like, I would love to do a record with D'Angelo.
26:04D'Angelo, I love, like, underground artists like Alex Isley.
26:08I love Red Hands.
26:12It's just a lot of people.
26:13I would love to do a record with Erykah Badu.
26:16I would love to do a record with Jill Scott.
26:18That would be dope.
26:19That would be dope.
26:21Oh, that would be dope.
26:23Yeah.
26:24Absolutely.
26:26Who are your influences?
26:28Like, who are the people that made you want to get up and sing?
26:32Well, it was my mom and dad, first of all.
26:35They were quartet singers in quartet groups.
26:37And then it was quartet groups, like the Mighty Clouds of Joy, you know, gospel, I mean, the gospel keynotes, like all of those.
26:44I grew up on that.
26:46And then it was like Clark Sisters, Aretha Franklin, you know, Whitney Houston.
26:51And definitely Marvin Gaye, he's like my favorite male artist of all time.
26:56And those who, the people I still listen to to this day, and they inspire me to write still, you know?
27:03Nice.
27:04Are there any artists today whose music you're absolutely loving?
27:08Like these new artists, new wave, and new genres that you listen to?
27:12Not off the top of my head.
27:17No.
27:18I mean, Summer Walker.
27:21Oh, yeah.
27:22She's wonderful.
27:23I love her music.
27:25I like Summer Walker.
27:28Her.
27:29I like her.
27:30Yep.
27:31Another one.
27:32And, yeah.
27:34Yeah.
27:35Yeah.
27:35Yeah.
27:36See, I just listen to my old stuff and keep my groove right there.
27:42You know what I mean?
27:44Yeah.
27:44Yeah.
27:45Well, because the thing is, too, that you are also such a big influence for a lot of these new artists that are coming up, too.
27:51So, they're listening to Tweet.
27:53I hope so.
27:55Yes.
