00:02A new commemorative coin is moving forward, and this one features a sitting president.
00:08A federal arts commission has approved the design for a 24-karat gold coin bearing President Donald Trump's image,
00:15part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration.
00:18The design shows Trump at a desk with Liberty and In God We Trust also on the coin, with the
00:25bald eagle on the back.
00:27The approval clears the way for the U.S. Mint to begin production, though the final size and value are
00:33still being worked out.
00:34In a statement, U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach said,
00:37As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country
00:45and democracy,
00:46and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins.
00:51The move is getting attention because federal law generally bars living people, including sitting presidents, from appearing on U.S.
00:58currency.
00:59The image used is based on this portrait already hanging in the Smithsonian.
01:04Treasury officials say they can move forward here because commemorative gold coins fall under different authority.
01:11This is not the only coin under discussion.
01:13The administration has also floated a separate $1 coin featuring Donald Trump,
01:18including a design showing him after the 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.
01:25It's part of a broader pattern, with Trump's name also showing up on buildings like the Institute of Peace,
01:31cultural institutions like the Kennedy Arts Center, even a new class of battleships.
01:36The gold coin would be produced in limited numbers and could sell for thousands of dollars.
01:43The gold coin has also only two thirds, but the gold coin is partly partly stipulated as if the silver
01:45coin is inverted.
