Brandy talks about falling in love with the script for the new ABC drama 'Queens,' how she connects to her character Naomi/Xplicit Lyrics as both an artist and a mom, and what it felt like to have fellow 'Queens' co-stars Eve and Cam'Ron co-sign her flows on the show.

00:00the dumbest thing we ever did was throw away friendships that most people never had
00:04let's get this group back together listen everyone been asking about y'all i want y'all
00:10closing out the bt awards this sunday that's 50k for each of you you know i've been to
00:15over holiday break so i'm so excited to talk to you think love it like was up till 2am yes i was
00:25all over it oh my god thank you thank you so much this is a great great blessing wow i love it and
00:35i was reading so your um new york times profile and you said this was a dream role um for you and i
00:41see you know me and and plenty other fans i think were shocked to see you so hardcore um and i'm
00:47curious you know what's the role like that made you sign on that stella mcgee had in mind for you
00:52from the job i don't i don't i don't know if he had me in mind for for naomi i i just i knew he
00:59wanted to work with me and i and i sat with him i met with him in our vibe we just really connected
01:04but when i read the script i was like this is a page turner i loved it i loved explicit lyrics i
01:11love naomi um i love the way she was written and i could relate to her uh the best you know being a
01:17single mom sometimes having to you know um i i didn't do it as much as naomi i'm a much better
01:23mom than naomi was because she's a better mom now but you know there are times i have to choose to
01:28to go out and work and leave my daughter for a certain period of time and things like that i
01:33could relate and then just the other the other women the the group you know just i could relate
01:39to every character and to be able to tell these amazing stories through music and getting a second
01:46chance to to be everything that you you feel that you were born to be it's just just a beautiful
01:50story to tell and i'm just so glad i'm a part of it yes and thinking about that you know as you
01:57mentioned kind of relating to the storyline you know naomi's journey as a mom is so central
02:01to that have you watched the show with your own daughter like does she kind of relate to things
02:06well she she loves the show and i i i haven't been able i watched it with her last night for the
02:13for the first time because you know we were filming while it's while it's airing so i'm filming in
02:19atlanta she's in la but um she loves the show and she she told me she's told me a few times mom you
02:26and jojo jojo who is my daughter on the show pray but play by precious way um because mommy you and jojo
02:35you just you guys just have a magic and it's just beautiful to see that you guys are coming together
02:40and through music and there have been times where she says you guys have made me cry like
02:46so i'm glad because because i didn't know she was gonna feel a little like jealous that i have a
02:52daughter because you know i've had a son on television i've never had a a daughter so i didn't know how
02:56i was gonna but she loves it she loves it she's so proud and it's since it's it's inspirational to
03:03her as well i love that and we got to eve um shortly after she announced her pregnancy
03:10just like rallied around her and like stuck up for her on a set of days got long and things like
03:19that yeah like you know when you find that she's pregnant and that motherly instinct kicking in
03:24absolutely well you know this is her this is her first pregnancy and you know i love eve i've loved
03:31her for such a long time so naturally i came in loving her and wanting to protect her even before
03:37i knew uh that that she was with child and then it just got progressively more and more care and just
03:44wanting her to be um safe and still be able to do what she loves to do and and we worked it out it
03:50was a grind but we definitely protected her and kept her you know in good spirits as much as we could
03:56and it's but it's such a great show that you know sometimes you can get lost in it and sometimes
04:01forget that you're even tired or pregnant or what because it's such a fun show yeah yeah and yeah you
04:09know it's funny thinking about naomi also like wanting to have this solo career you know as she's
04:15with yeah loving them and i was thinking about you you know as being your own like a dynamic solo star
04:22when you were growing up did you ever want to be a part of a girl group i actually wasn't a girl group
04:28before and i was in a girl group before when i was 11 years old and um i liked it i just i i just
04:37couldn't dance as good as they could and they didn't really sing so i said well then i might need
04:43to go ahead on and do this on my own that's that was the first uh you know moment i had with the group
04:49and then later on in my career i i had this feeling of wanting to feel like what it would be
04:55like to be in a group like take individuals artists solo artists and put them together in a group and
05:02see what that would would be like i because i love sharing the light i just wanted to see how that
05:06what that dynamic was and that didn't happen and then queens happened okay and so all of my dreams come
05:15true some kind of way and i appreciate the universe and god for that because it's done in a way where
05:23it's not my way it's it's the divine way and this is this is the perfect way because i used to rap too
05:29and nobody wanted to hear me rap because they were so used to me saying it so i got another shot at
05:33to to rap and hide behind this character and it'd all be okay so blessed yes i was asking about that
05:41because i saw people googling like is brandy really rapping i was like were you not there for
05:45b rocker and like this they wasn't there for they wasn't there for brand no fam they wasn't there
05:51and i understand because you don't come out that way and you know you try to people are used to seeing
05:58you a certain way but i've always been the type of artist to want to push my instrument and want
06:02to see if i could you know do certain things with my voice and and rap was one of those things i
06:08wanted to do because i love the cadence i love the rhythm of it and i love the pocket and and the
06:13just how to put the words together and back in in my day of rapping i was painting my own stuff you
06:20feel me so i felt like you know i want to do this and then to get this opportunity on queens and then
06:26to find this like female nas tone jada kiss and and then like people like a jada kiss and eve will
06:34stamp you like oh my god you should rap like that makes me feel like should i do the rap album or
06:40what no you know that's my next question because people are obsessed with you in camera and on and
06:47off camera and they want a project or something so no i i know i was so thankful for him to come
06:54and be a part of the show because all those skits that we did that's him that's his mind he's such
07:00a comedian and a genius like in in editing and he edited everything he just and i just went along
07:06with it i just kind of he was the director and he i was the actress and it was just great and
07:12you know and and chemistry is something that is just um it's supernatural you can't force it you can't
07:19teach it and we just had a great chemistry and i had a really good time working with him and i think
07:23he should do more acting he's so good absolutely yeah you know as you mentioned about like pinning
07:30your stuff back in the day like how important it is to be like a writer you know in addition to
07:35a musician and just like the significance of creating your own music oh my god i started actually
07:42late writing my own songs um and i'm kind of glad because i got a chance to uh watch and and learn from
07:49you know some of the greatest writers ever in music and um so when i started to really dig into
07:55my own poetry and my own music i started to feel like okay this is what i want to say this is what i
08:01want to uh put out into the world and it and it was more honest for me like a lot a lot of the songs
08:07that i've done that i haven't written i could relate to and i could bring the truth and honesty to it but
08:12when it's you and it's your lyrics and it's your words it just feels a little bit different it feels a
08:18little bit more um like it's it's more intimate it's more like mine you know what i mean it's so
08:23i hope i'm explaining that right no one's ever asked me that before
08:26you know what are you hoping audiences will take away i think the show has done just such an amazing
08:35job of like dealing with these heavy subjects but like you know navigating you don't stay in like
08:40the deep place but you know for you what are you hoping no i just i just know music heals people
08:47people love music and i and i know that we have a great music team so i know that people are going
08:53to love the music but i also want them to find themselves in in the stories that we're telling
08:58because we're telling real stories not just about the music industry and and group stuff and record
09:03label stuff but we're also telling real stories about things that have happened to just regular women
09:10regular men just human beings and i think that um it's it's powerful and we're touching on so many
09:17so many subjects and i think so many people can relate and just to escape from their own their own
09:24stuff this is this is the kind of show where you can just like you like you binged and you can really
09:29just go and kind of like escape yes and i'm so glad it's 13 episodes i'm like eight is never enough
09:36so i was so excited we got more coming i wanted a little more but we gotta we gotta regroup but
09:45you know i'm i'm praying for season two because i i just i just absolutely love um i love it i'm so
09:53grateful i'm so grateful for this for this opportunity i love seeing you in the character thank you so
09:59thank you
10:00thank you
