00:00Hi, I'm Dena Campbell, hair and beauty editor. Today I have with me celebrity hairstylist,
00:09Jose Perez, and he's going to talk to us about how to protect our hair from chlorine and saltwater.
00:17Everyone's heading to the beach this year, and we need to know how to protect our strains.
00:21What are some ways we can protect it? I know chlorine can be especially really harsh.
00:26Yes, and especially when you get out of the pool, your hair is kind of hard and brittle.
00:31Absolutely.
00:32And it's rough, so you definitely want an argon oil mask. It will hydrate your hair, it will keep it moisturized,
00:39and it's also good, believe it or not, to add a little before you even go in the pool,
00:43because once your hair is absorbed, it's less likely to absorb other things, you know, like other moisture,
00:49so less chlorine would be in your hair as well.
00:51Okay, so now how does this look? Do we take the mask?
00:54Yeah, so first you want to start with a deep mask, kind of run it through your fingers,
00:59and run it through the ends, that's where the most dry part of your hair is.
01:02Ah, it smells amazing.
01:03Yeah, it's really great.
01:05And it's good to really twist your hair, because you really saturate it and you get it all evenly.
01:11Nice.
01:12And as you, thank you for your health.
01:15And the shower crap, it may look funny, but trust me, it works.
01:19And you'll notice in time, the bag, I mean the shower crap will get a little, get warm.
01:26That means your scalp is producing heat, which penetrates the...
01:29Okay, so we're not going to be on the beach with a shower cap on, right?
01:32No, we're not, but this is home, this is like before you're getting dressed,
01:36or before you're going to rinse out your hair and all that.
01:38You can do a hundred million errands at your house without knocking two birds in one stone.
01:42What else can we do before we head to the beach?
01:46Before, besides sunscreen, vitamin C.
01:49And I'm not talking about like things you take, but actually vitamin C for your hair.
01:55Vitamin C is known to neutralize chlorine, so the trend now is soaking your hair a little bit with water
02:02and using one of these, you know, a kind of vitamin C package you get at your local pharmacy
02:09and mixing it with a little bit of water.
02:12This is a little bit, but it goes a long way.
02:15You want to spread it all over your hair.
02:17Okay.
02:18And this is kind of funny, people are like, oh my God, vitamin C, really?
02:21Like you're literally putting vitamin C directly on the hair.
02:23Literally putting vitamin C.
02:24And if you feel a little cold, you can pop some in your mouth and you'll feel better.
02:27I'm telling you, it works.
02:28It's amazing.
02:29It smells like an orange.
02:30It smells like an orange.
02:32And this will help the chlorine.
02:35Oh, I love that.
02:36Yeah.
02:37And if it gets on your skin, it's amazing.
02:39Yeah.
02:40If it gets on your skin and it's okay, you know?
02:43So we've got the vitamin C and we're good and conditioned.
02:48What else do we apply before we head to the beach?
02:51Water and some serum.
02:53It's very important to keep your hair hydrated.
02:55Like I said, your hair is a living thing.
02:56It's going to soak up anything.
02:58So chlorine, we don't want that.
03:00So even if you dump your head into the faucet, the sink, or even with a spray bottle, just
03:07saturate your hair really well with water.
03:10This will obviously be absorbed by the hair.
03:13Would you rather have chlorine or water or serum absorbed?
03:15And that's what we're accomplishing here right now.
03:18And the serum is just as important.
03:20You want to add a good amount of serum.
03:23This will work as a coat to help your cuticle stay hydrated and filled.
03:30Because if we remove all those things, then your hair is going to absorb too much chlorine.
03:36And how much should you apply?
03:38Every person is different.
03:40For her amount of hair, you want to really soak it in and really apply a lot.
03:45Some people may have less.
03:46It's just you'll notice like the feel and texture of your hair because we want that to change as well.
03:52It would rather be on an oil base than on the dry side because once it's dry then that means your hair is absorbing.
03:57So we just had an amazing time at the beach.
04:00What should we do once we're home?
04:02Shower.
04:03We all have sand everywhere.
04:05Everywhere we don't even want to mention and especially in the hair.
04:08And with the salt water and like especially the pool or chlorine if you're in a beach or pool,
04:13you have a lot of build up, especially the product that we added earlier.
04:16So as much as we filled in the cuticle, now we kind of want to release it and really clarify and cleanse.
04:21So that's what I recommend is a clarifying shampoo.
04:24You can find them at your local grocery store, high end to medium.
04:28They all pretty much do the same thing.
04:29And remember, if you're scrubbing your hair and it's not lathering, that means your scalp is and your hair is still dirty.
04:35Once the hair foams up, that means your scalp is clean because there's nothing to,
04:40there's no build up or anything to catch the foam and so that's why it releases.
04:44So that's a good tip to know if you're shampooing your hair.
04:47Great.
04:48Well, sounds like we're all set and ready for the beach.
