ESSENCE Home Style | Rene Daniella Askew’s Joyful, Color-Drenched Home Tour
Transcript
00:00Hi my lovelies, I'm Renee Daniela and this is Essence Home Style. Welcome to my home.
00:10I always tell people, when you start with your own design, start with what you love,
00:14not with what somebody else is doing or what's trendy or what's popular. And then also think,
00:19what do you want to do in this house? I wanted a space that I can have community,
00:23that I can invite my friends into and host them in my beautiful dining area, that I could also
00:27come and get dolled up for the evening in my clappus and sit in my beautiful moody bedroom and
00:33just pull away from the world and be in my own space. So I really took creative freedom and free
00:39will and I went room by room and I curated my space to be for the woman that I aspire
00:45to be.
00:49So my kitchen might be one of the rooms where I took a bigger risk when it came to my
00:53decor and
00:53design. I absolutely love purples. I was actually inspired by this artwork I purchased when I was
00:59at Leki Market in Lagos, Nigeria. And so when I first moved into this house, I popped my artwork up
01:04here in the kitchen and that first image was the one that really inspired this beautiful deep plum in
01:10my kitchen. And then I started including different accents. So then I added the color color viola marble
01:15and I've added different accents with my shelf styling. Look at these beautiful pink hues and the way
01:22they sit with this teal vase or even this one. Both of these are from the Temmie Coker and Walmart
01:29collection and they just bring pops of color to different pockets of my room. I didn't want any
01:34aspect of my day-to-day life in my home to be mundane. I wanted everything to be romanticized. I
01:40wanted
01:40everything to have an element of joy and playfulness. In this house, every room is almost like a playground.
01:50This is my cloth office. If you haven't heard that term, it's a closet and an office. And so this
01:55space
01:55kind of serves a dual purpose. I absolutely love color. I love scenery. And I wanted to create a room
02:02that truly reflected me both as a woman, but also as a Black woman. I wanted my space to show
02:07my travels.
02:08Like if you look in all the different rooms, you'll see beautiful imagery of Black women and Black people
02:13living and thriving. I have this beautiful mural. It has this gorgeous Black woman and she is depicted
02:19in this beautiful like Moroccan landscape. I love Black designers and featuring them in my space as
02:24well from the robe I'm wearing or artwork I picked up in Nigeria. Even this rug is from a Nigerian
02:30-American
02:30designer. His name is Temmie Coker and he has a gorgeous collection at Walmart. So this is the latest
02:35piece I added to this room and it looks stunning. And even this little bench I'm on, it was a
02:41DIY.
02:42I used an old curtain to turn it into this gorgeous bench. I have a fabulous surprise that I definitely
02:47want to show you guys. It is a hidden closet. Okay, from first impression, this is simply a closet.
02:54Once you open these doors, any parts like I have this robe collection, and you walk in, you will find
03:01the
03:01original closet that came with this space. All the pieces in this room are just feminine and colorful
03:07and beautiful and really help express myself as a Black woman. I will say I have zero interior design
03:14background. I wouldn't even say that I'm particularly artsy, but as a content creator and an influencer,
03:20I knew when I was gonna buy this house that I need each room to have its own personality and
03:25its own vibe.
03:26Welcome to my bedroom. So first thing you notice in this room is definitely this beautiful moody burgundy color.
03:32But then I also have this gorgeous mural, which if you get nice and close, you'll notice that it has
03:38this gorgeous texture to it. It feels almost like feathers. And then I have my beautiful bed, which even here
03:44I wanted to make sure I added some more textures. So these gorgeous cushions are from the Temmie Coker collection
03:49as well. You'll notice they're a bit similar to my rug and my cloth face. This is a DIY vanity.
03:55I fell in love
03:56with the version of this online, and I realized that it was a little out of my price range, and
04:00so I decided to
04:01DIY it. And it turned out absolutely fabulous. I wanted it to be in this absolutely gorgeous, deep color tone,
04:09this burgundy, because I was color drenching this whole room. And just off my bedroom is my beautiful bathroom.
04:15I absolutely love this room. It's also color drenched a little bit. I've got lime wash and texture on the
04:20walls. And then I've got this gorgeous mural that really kind of brings the outdoors in. It's just
04:25these gorgeous palm leaves. I literally have my own little ritual where I'll take my bath soaps,
04:31my bath suds, and I will just sit back and relax. I'll light my candles. I'll put myself a little
04:36show on,
04:37and I will really just unwind. And I love it.
04:40One of the biggest takeaways I've had from my home decor interior design journey is just
04:45creating a space that truly reflects me. The person who moved into my home four years ago,
04:50and the person I am now, completely evolved. I feel like I've gotten more comfortable in my
04:55femininity, more comfortable in my independence as a woman. I feel more empowered in my space. And now,
05:01you know, through sharing my home online and my interior design, I have found the most beautiful
05:06audience of women. I feel as though I create my space for myself, but I also create it for women
05:10out there who are looking for that kind of inspiration. Now, thank you all so much for
05:15coming and featuring my home. It has been a pleasure to be a part of Essence Home Style.
05:19I hope you all loved it.
