00:00Pretend you're a donkey if you love the costas.
00:04Eh-oh, we love the beach.
00:06Oi, oi, better done, we love ya.
00:09Oi, oi, Kerry and Nicola, we really do.
00:12And with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:16it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:19Ah, this is a lie.
00:21Living that dream can be blooming hard graft.
00:24Listing.
00:25My life, you're right.
00:27Stress level.
00:28Through the roof.
00:30But at the end of the working day...
00:32Go power, go power, come on, Sam.
00:34Forward.
00:34Booyah!
00:35The quality of life on the costas...
00:37Ah!
00:39You did it!
00:40You did it!
00:40...is priceless.
00:42Cheers, everybody.
00:43Peace and love.
00:44Cheers.
00:45That's why there will always be...
00:47But I don't like where the sun gets in places where it shouldn't get.
00:49Quick, someone talk about the weather.
00:51The weather?
00:52Phew.
00:52It's friendly, it's exciting, it's just like a second home.
00:56Bargain, living Brits, in the sun.
00:58Yeah!
00:58Yeah!
00:58Yeah!
00:58Yeah!
00:58Today on the costas...
01:02100 euros.
01:03That's good.
01:04Shop manager Carol barters to bring in the books.
01:07We encourage people to part with their money.
01:10Deal.
01:11Trick, one, two, two, two, one.
01:13If music be the food of love...
01:15It should work.
01:17You might be going hungry at bass player Nigel's game.
01:20Try again.
01:22It's not live.
01:23And we relive all the pigging drama.
01:26Tripping juices.
01:27We need to get that machine out quick.
01:29As Porkmaster Chunks goes the whole hog.
01:32Oh, oh, the trailer's moving.
01:33Oh!
01:33Down!
01:34Down!
01:34We give Jack some treats and tell him what a good boy he is.
01:48Look at Jack.
01:49I'll see you later.
01:51I'll see you later.
01:51Hey, good boy.
01:53I won't be long.
01:55It's shop manager Carol's most hectic day of the week.
01:59Wednesday's usually quite busy because we're open from whenever we get there until two o'clock.
02:05And so we're just on the go all the time.
02:10It's also the day the shop collects all the big and potentially profitable furniture items.
02:15We're hoping for a busy day because then we'll make lots of money.
02:19Every sale at the shop goes towards the whopping 6,000 euros a month it takes to fund a local dog rescue charity.
02:30Jim, could you move these out of the way so we can open the door?
02:35Carol's been shop boss for six years and this former teacher runs a tight ship with a team of five top dog volunteers.
02:44You've got quite a lot to actually sort out.
02:48Including van driver Tim who has a busy day collecting all the donated furniture.
02:53Do you want to go there first?
02:55Well, as long as it's before 12.
02:57Yeah, if we go there first, it's out of the way then.
02:59Yeah, and the rest is local.
03:02Grand.
03:02Okay.
03:03I am involved in so much with the charity.
03:07So it's not just working in the shop twice a week.
03:10Even on a Sunday, I do the advertisements for the following week.
03:14And I do, you know, the, well, what's happening in the shop next week type of thing.
03:20I start from nine and we leave about two.
03:23So we're on our feet all that time doing this sort of thing.
03:29So we are very, very busy.
03:30Good morning.
03:31How are you?
03:32I'm fine.
03:33Are you all right?
03:33Good.
03:34Yeah.
03:34The customer deserves the attention because that's what we're there for.
03:41And they're the ones spending money.
03:42Well, you've got six there, but if we call it four for the lot, is that all right, sir?
03:47Yep.
03:47There we are.
03:48Let's go to sleep.
03:49But secondly, every single person in that shop working is a volunteer.
03:54Not too much swearing.
03:55Oh, right.
03:56And if they can do their job brilliantly, so all of those can go out, as well as have
04:03a laugh, then everyone wins.
04:08And 16 change.
04:09Thank you very much.
04:12I love coming here.
04:13Even if I don't buy anything all the time, it's just lovely.
04:18And I normally stick something in the pot anyway if I haven't bought anything.
04:22That's what Carol likes to hear, Dorothy.
04:24Can he take that as well?
04:27So you had to move that bed out.
04:29With shed loads of valuable stock arriving today, Carol's hopeful it will bring out the
04:34bargain hunters and get them spending.
04:36Is that being delivered or is it?
04:38All right.
04:38The ex-teacher has set her sights on bringing in 500 euros from sales and donations before
04:44the two o'clock closing.
04:46Quite often I'll say to the girls who are, who sometimes I'm afraid they chat to each other,
04:53I'll say, oh, paying customer, can you check if they want anything?
04:56We try to treat the customers in a way that make them happy to come into a second-hand shop.
05:03I'll be back again.
05:04Good.
05:05Hope so.
05:06I will.
05:07Onwards and upwards.
05:08Come on.
05:16Look at the shovel.
05:1845 minutes drive from Malaga, in the foothills of the Sierra de Amahara.
05:23Another day in paradise.
05:25It's walkies for husband and husband, Nigel and Steve.
05:28Wow.
05:30I'll never tire of that for you.
05:32We've been here 20 years and we wouldn't live anywhere else.
05:35We absolutely love it.
05:36Hey, Morris.
05:37The couple first lived together in Brighton and both used to work at Gatwick Airport,
05:42Nigel as a customs officer.
05:44I had a long story short.
05:45I didn't get promoted at Gatwick where I was working at the time.
05:49You came home and whinged and I said, ah, let's go to Spain.
05:54Yeah.
05:54And I said, yes.
05:56Yeah, let's do it.
05:57Let's do it.
05:58And if it doesn't work out, we can always come back and start again.
06:01Come on, Morris.
06:03What's this?
06:03Now, the only thing Nigel's got to declare is his rock and roll dream.
06:08And he's recently joined a new band that he hopes will be top of the pops.
06:12You play and the audience are loving it.
06:14It's a tremendous feeling.
06:15And, yeah, I can't see myself giving it up.
06:19I just really, really enjoy it.
06:20And it's a huge thing for me in my life.
06:22Let's get the kettle on.
06:24Later today, the band has an important gig,
06:27giving them a real opportunity to build their local reputation
06:30and get them more followers.
06:32You're coming as well.
06:33I am.
06:34It's very rare I go, so.
06:37Steve's not really a muso.
06:38I like the piece at home.
06:40Let's just put it this way.
06:41We're not Brocelli or Celine Dion,
06:44so what we play is not necessarily his bag, but that's okay.
06:47Cat's hungry.
06:49Hey, Daisy.
06:50While husband Steve prefers to channel his inner Mary Berry.
06:54This is blueberry jam.
06:56This is my cheat.
06:58Nigel is happiest in his music room.
07:00This is the keyboard on which I write music.
07:03As well as wielding his axe on stage.
07:06Yeah, this is the bass.
07:07I bought this from the UK a couple of years ago now, I think.
07:10I love it.
07:11It's a really great instrument.
07:12And more importantly, it's lighter than my old bass guitar.
07:14So, as I get older, it's all about weight.
07:18You don't want anything that's too heavy and too demanding on the back,
07:22like amplifiers and guitars.
07:24Yep.
07:24Even rock gods have a sensible side.
07:27Hi, we're here.
07:30Also coming to the big gig to support Nigel, our best mates of 35 years, Dave and Steve.
07:36Hi, Dave.
07:37And you're playing this afternoon, aren't you?
07:40Yep.
07:41Oh.
07:41Faber-real.
07:42Faber-real.
07:42Brilliant.
07:43Looking forward to that.
07:44Should be good, as long as the weather holds.
07:47Nigel's band last played at the venue a month ago, and the weather wasn't kind.
07:51The first time it was almost rained off.
07:53We had to play indoors, but hopefully this time it'll be good.
07:57As we came down the motorway, it got really misty.
07:59Yeah.
08:00With the rock clock ticking...
08:02Off to the gig.
08:03All set.
08:04He's a good player.
08:05He's a good player, yeah.
08:06He's played with a couple of bands before, and there's always been great entertainment.
08:11Nigel and the band have just an hour until showtime.
08:15You stay there, Moise.
08:16You'd be a good boy.
08:17All right, I'll see you later, then.
08:18All right, look.
08:19I'll see you back there.
08:20Here's hoping for no rain this time.
08:24Coming up.
08:27Caterer Chunks may have bitten off more than he can chew.
08:30This is how you put the meat on the grill.
08:32Oh, God.
08:32Okay?
08:33And at the charity shop, manager Carol raises the stakes on sales.
08:38I want 700 plus today, please.
08:40Where do we start?
08:41When us Brits come to the sun...
08:55Oh, I'll kill you!
08:57...we can't wait to get out there and grab Spain by the costas.
09:01But like top athletes, you need the right fuel to set you up for the day.
09:06Two euros weekday.
09:07Sorry, you can't complain for that.
09:09Beans are my least favourite.
09:11So, well, then we'll do the eggs, then the beans.
09:15This is a belly buster.
09:17Oh, I don't think I'll eat for a week after this one, do you?
09:20Try and save some room.
09:21It's been in since two o'clock this morning.
09:28Because not far from Benidorm, Londoner Paul is cooking up something very tasty.
09:34Good nine, ten hours.
09:36We're trotting back to when this hog roast venture was just a dinky piglet dream of a business idea.
09:42So, let's just set the ingredients up.
09:46Paul, also known as Chunks, worked as a singer, but had big plans to start a legacy family business.
09:53Step into the shot and we do welcome back to the Saucy Piglet kitchen.
09:57With the help of his son, George.
10:00Today, we're doing something a tiny bit different.
10:03And George is nothing like a kitchen nightmare.
10:06The person who inspires me to cook is Gordon Ramsay, who I've been watching for a very long time.
10:14We spend a lot of time together doing our little plans with what we're going to do with the food.
10:19And then, obviously, when we're filming as well.
10:21So, we do sort of work closely and we have that little bond between us.
10:26So, it's good. It's good for both of us.
10:29It looks amazing. Delicious.
10:33I don't want to eat it.
10:35It looks like a donut.
10:37Good enough to eat, lads.
10:39But it's not just a two-person team.
10:42This is where it's all going to go horribly wrong, innit?
10:46Along with George, Chunks lives half an hour north of Benidorm, with his wife, Charlie, and their two other kids.
10:52We all get on really well. It's a bundle of laughs all the time.
10:55Because everyone's got their own different character.
10:58And their dog, who's a bit of a handful.
11:01Dog's got the eye pops.
11:02See?
11:03So, the dog's run away with you.
11:05Chunks' dream is to give up his singing evening job to run the barbecue business full-time.
11:10And I'm getting a bit too old for doing the entertaining stuff now.
11:14Mick Jagger's got 20 years on you, Chunks.
11:17Here.
11:17So, it's the kitchen where we do all the prep work for the ribs and any meat that's cooked on the barbecue.
11:28All the marinades are made in here, by hand, by me.
11:32Things like this one.
11:33The ultimate rib tickler.
11:35The way I'm doing it is, it's a legacy.
11:37It's not just a business, it's a family business that we can build up and keep going, hopefully, if it works.
11:44So, that's called a fiery bone sucker.
11:46Pulling my pork, which is a burr for pulled pork, obviously.
11:50Well, I'm glad you pointed that out, Chunks.
11:52But, yeah, a lot of research went into it.
11:54And these are all my own recipes, which I'm quite proud of.
11:57If the family can make a success of the marinades...
12:01That's 110 degrees.
12:03The next step will be trying to book barbecues and hog roasts at local bars and restaurants.
12:08Come back in three hours.
12:11To get their name out there, Chunks has booked a stall at a local market to try and flog his marinades and ribs.
12:18Right, we've got all the meat, all the orders pre-cooked and ready in here.
12:23So, hopefully, they'll all turn on.
12:27People bring in oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and we sell them for €6.3, so...
12:40Well, one of you five a day.
12:42In Cambersole, shop manager Carol is hoping for her busiest and most profitable day of the week.
12:48€100?
12:51She's joking.
12:52I'm joking.
12:53What do we think? Do we think 10?
12:55Wow.
12:55100%.
12:56Right, there you go, then.
12:57Deal.
12:59Deal.
13:01Oh.
13:02The ex-teacher is aiming to take €500 today to help support and run the dog rescue charity in kennels.
13:10You're supposed to, when the goods come into the sorting table outside, sort them on the table and then put them directly into the correct boxes.
13:22But because people are sometimes overwhelmed with black bags out there, they just pick them up and dump them in here.
13:30Where do we start?
13:32It is tricky, but we do our best.
13:34Reporting to Carol are her crew of volunteer prefects.
13:38We're all crazy, crazy, certain age women.
13:43Carol might be the boss, but there's one area she's bottom of the class.
13:47I've written it down correctly.
13:49It's just, I've run it up on the till wall.
13:52Have you?
13:53And you need me to sort that out now, do you?
13:54Okay.
13:55Okay.
13:55I'm not allowed to use the till when Catherine's here.
14:00She always messes it up.
14:02You'll end up in detention, Carol.
14:04Oh, there's a 105.
14:06I don't know why there's a 105.
14:09Okay, so I'm going to cancel that out.
14:12She used to be a teacher, and I said to her once, I tell you what, Carol, you might have been a teacher, but you never taught maths.
14:18Right, there we go.
14:22A plus Catherine.
14:25Grand.
14:26It was in Dubai that Carol worked as a teacher before arriving in Spain with her first husband in 2010.
14:33But their dreams of a long retirement together on the Costa Blanca were sadly not to be.
14:39To the death of my first husband, I thought I'd never be happy again.
14:43It was sort of, it was completely decimated me.
14:46But then I met Sid, and we started going out, and suddenly I was happy, you know.
14:54They had a happy two years together, but sadly, he also passed away four years ago.
15:00Although people say, oh, you've been unlucky, I don't, that's not true, because there are two very, very happy marriages.
15:07So I'm the lucky one.
15:09There's people who don't get one happy marriage.
15:12Kitchenware is very popular, especially saucepans.
15:15We sell so many saucepans.
15:17Hello, Tony, how are you?
15:19It was her husband who gave Carol the confidence to start working for the charity.
15:24That's just four euros, please.
15:26And take a euro for the doctor.
15:29Oh, thank you so much.
15:30And Carol's worked hard to create a community hub for both customers and volunteers, like Sue.
15:37I have been volunteering here about eight years, maybe a little bit more.
15:43We don't just work, we have a chat, we have a laugh.
15:47We love each other.
15:48We love each other.
15:50We love each other.
15:51We are family.
15:53Today, the charity van is picking up larger donations from local addresses.
15:59The van's just come back with some goods and some of our customers want first dibs on certain items that they like to take from us and sell on.
16:09So it's a bit of a scrum while we say, just wait, and then we'll sell it to you or whatever.
16:15All right, we're just, it's ready, it's ready, senor.
16:18And with some promising higher value items arriving.
16:22I want 700 plus today, please.
16:24Carol's up today's takings goal by 200 euros.
16:27You want a hand in that one?
16:29Yeah.
16:30Come on, team.
16:31700 euros before 2 p.m.
16:33Well, you know, it's all about upcycling, isn't it?
16:50Well, this is the national flag of Spain.
16:54This is a great find.
16:56I was walking to the sea and there it was by the bins.
17:03Yes, it did have a wrapper on, so it was new.
17:09But yes, someone had obviously had a bit of a feng shui moment and cleaned some clutter.
17:20It cost me absolutely nothing.
17:24It has to be the best bargain.
17:26The best bargain.
17:27Over in Boussat on the Costa Blanca, Paul, known as Chunks, along with his family, have arrived at the market.
17:39There we go, sir.
17:40He's hoping to rake it in with his pre-packed ribs and marinades in a bid to help launch his new business.
17:46That's your lunch sorted out, isn't it?
17:49Yes.
17:50In Spain, they don't do flavours on ribs.
17:53They just do dry ribs.
17:54So I wanted more flavour.
17:55Did a bit of research and started putting all this together.
17:59And those marinated pigs are starting to fly.
18:02All your instructions on this side for reheating them and everything.
18:06Oh, lovely.
18:07All right.
18:08And that's the girl here, look.
18:09He'd like to retire from performing and do this full-time with the family.
18:14Looks like the local noses are smelling a bargain.
18:18One ultimate rib.
18:19That's a hefty one, that, as well, so.
18:21Oh, I'm very pleased to hear that.
18:22Probably get a good two meals out of that.
18:24Yeah, that's good.
18:25That's 12 euros, sir.
18:26That's fine.
18:26That's fantastic.
18:29Everyone seems to be enjoying and anticipating getting home and putting them in a pan of boiling water.
18:34Yeah.
18:34How very 70s.
18:37Boiling the bag ribs?
18:38Could catch on.
18:39Right, then.
18:42Have these ribs tickled the taste buds of the Brits?
18:46Change.
18:47About 225?
18:49Yeah.
18:50Yeah, yeah.
18:50More than we thought we were going to do, so.
18:52Yeah, really good.
18:53Not bad at all.
18:54That's kind of made our day for us.
18:56Right.
18:56It's been a sizzling success at the market.
18:59So what's next for Chunks and the Gann?
19:01So we've invested in some new equipment.
19:05Originally we had the smokers, but now we've bought ourselves an industrial plancher, an industrial lava grill, and a complete hog roast machine.
19:16And Chunks has gone the whole hog for his first ever bar booking for 80 guests.
19:22I'm very, very happy, as a pig in the proverbial mud, as we like to say.
19:29The booking is huge for the business, but first Gordon Ramsay, sorry George, needs to show Chunks how to use the kit.
19:35Now, watch, mate.
19:38This is how you put the meat on the grill.
19:40Oh, God.
19:40Okay?
19:41You know I said to you, roll it away from you.
19:44Listen.
19:45That's how you do it, okay?
19:47Right, I'll try.
19:48Away from you, okay?
19:49Roll it away.
19:50That's it.
19:51There we go.
19:51Hi, I'm a natural.
19:53I think you might be George.
19:55Take the one that we've done, and then we gently flip it over.
19:59You've done really well, mate.
20:01I mean, look at these chops.
20:03They're cooked to perfection.
20:05Yeah?
20:06Yeah.
20:07And the proof is in tasting the food.
20:11Give me one of them.
20:13Nicely done, mate.
20:15But this family can't rest on its perfect pork chops.
20:18Is that good?
20:20You've got it all over your face already.
20:22Today is the biggest day so far for Chunks' family barbecue business.
20:28If things do go wrong, it's the saucy pig's reputation that's on the line.
20:34Yeah.
20:35Pretty much done.
20:38Nice.
20:39Foiled up so we don't burn the crackling.
20:41The business could be booming if they can go the whole hog with this first bookie.
20:47Coming up, sparks aren't flying.
20:50What's that plugged into at the minute, then?
20:52For bassist Nigel.
20:53We're one short on the sockets we needed.
20:55And could it be, hey, big spenders at Carol's shop?
20:59They're doing a whole house up.
21:01That's why we walk you back.
21:02I'm coming.
21:03Don't hear.
21:04I'm here.
21:05Four minutes to one.
21:19I think the other guys are probably there now or shortly.
21:22Um, and we're starting at two o'clock.
21:26Bass guitarist Nigel is on his way to a big gig with his band in the mountain town of Competa.
21:31We're getting a good following, so hopefully this afternoon we'll just add to that and, um, we'll continue to get more gigs.
21:40That's the plan anyway.
21:42Nigel's husband Steve and a gang of friends are all coming to cheer him on.
21:46It would be nice to have Steve there.
21:48He's a bit of a home boy.
21:50He doesn't tend to go out so much.
21:53Nigel and Steve first met at a party back in 1996.
21:57Within a very short period of time, he said, you're going to be the making of me.
22:03I don't know what he meant by that, but, um.
22:06I knew, you know, I knew.
22:07I knew as soon as I met him, I thought.
22:12Well, when you know, you know.
22:14Steve was in the audience for the gig at the same venue last month,
22:18and both are hoping that the weather is kinder than it was then.
22:23When we went to set up, the weather was looking a bit challenging, maybe.
22:26Uh, the forecast was a bit iffy.
22:28Where do you think I'll be going?
22:29Over there?
22:30OK.
22:31We were outside, exposed to the sky, and, uh, it did start splitting with rain,
22:35so we ended up having to go inside.
22:38The rain hammered it down.
22:39Yeah, it did hammer.
22:40It really came down.
22:43It's 40 minutes to showtime.
22:46So, if we're set up in time, we'll have a sound check.
22:49Yeah.
22:50Yeah, it's a good time.
22:53And, uh, hopefully the slight haze will burn off,
22:56and it'll be a lovely hot gig.
22:58Time to get those glad rags on before hitting the stage.
23:01You'll be dancing.
23:05Well, you've got to look the parts.
23:06Nigel took piano lessons as a child before he discovered his true musical love.
23:14I think the encouragement of my father, um, who was a pianist and saxophone player,
23:19I picked up the bass.
23:21Check one, two, two, two, one, two.
23:23I spent a lot of time in the bedroom playing along to live in 42 tracks,
23:26trying to be Mark King, but, uh, I never got there, but, uh, it was fun trying.
23:32Nigel's played in a few tribute bands before,
23:34but has been with this lot, Rum Runner, for a year.
23:37This is Colin, lead singer and guitarist.
23:40Hiya.
23:41From Birmingham originally.
23:43This is Rob, drummer.
23:44Drummer extraordinaire, also from Birmingham.
23:47And that's Jerry, lead singer also in guitar, from Holland.
23:50I'm not sure, whereabouts in Holland are you from, Jerry?
23:54Rotterdam.
23:54Me and Rotterdam.
23:55Rotterdam, apparently.
23:57We make quite a good sound, I think, so we'll see if the punters like it.
24:00Colin, is there power to that?
24:08Ah, right.
24:10But Colin's having a bitter bummer getting wired for sound.
24:13There's a technical issue plugging in his bass.
24:16What's that plugged into at the minute, then?
24:18Blimey, those electrics look like spaghetti junction.
24:22Er...
24:23I'll tell you what, they are.
24:26Well, can that be unplugged?
24:29What's that plugged into at the minute, then?
24:30We've got to just use the adapter.
24:32Take the adapter in.
24:33All right, er, will we get that through?
24:35Will that work?
24:37Come on, the show must go on.
24:39Well, one's short on the sockets we needed, so, um...
24:42I'm plugged into, er, an adapter socket down here,
24:45which, er, saves a lot of bother and, er, interruptions with the signal.
24:48Phew, disaster averted.
24:50Although the sun's still not quite popped its head out yet.
24:54Hopefully, that's the last hitch for today.
24:57Nothing.
25:00You have to do without me, then.
25:03It's obviously...
25:04Hold on.
25:05It's not coming in.
25:07Oh, now, but looks like there's something wrong with the sound.
25:10Compatibility issue between that unit and this unit?
25:12Is it because of the mixer?
25:13Try that.
25:14Oh, it should work.
25:16Come on.
25:18Oh, it's every performer's nightmare.
25:20Try again?
25:21Oh, I've got feedback.
25:23Oh.
25:27If the audience can't hear them, the gig can't go ahead.
25:30Yeah, it's not live.
25:39Let's go for the ham first.
25:42Back at Casa Chunks, he's putting the finishing touches to the hog roast
25:46for their first ever party bucket.
25:48Nice.
25:49Foiled up so we don't burn the crackling.
25:51I think we're ready for transport.
25:53You've got to lift it into there.
25:54Yeah, it won't be too bad, darling.
25:55OK.
25:59This is extremely heavy.
26:01Extremely heavy.
26:02To me.
26:03To you.
26:04To me.
26:05One end in.
26:06Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
26:08Juices.
26:09Let go.
26:09Let go.
26:10I've let go.
26:13Oh, that's not good.
26:16Well, the dog's happy at least.
26:17When I lifted it one end,
26:19all the essential juices that would come out
26:22have gone all over the place.
26:24Dehydrated hog could spell disaster
26:27for the burgeoning family business.
26:31You're still very nervous, I'm telling you.
26:35I know, I know, but it's going to be fine.
26:36It's going to be fine.
26:38You've got to start somewhere.
26:39It's the first one.
26:41It's got to be done.
26:42I know.
26:43OK.
26:44There's no sense crying over spilled pig juice,
26:47but Chunks and wife Charlie can't afford to lose any more.
26:50Dripping juices, we need to get that machine out quick.
26:54Oh, I can't watch.
26:55Yeah, I've got it.
26:57You've got it, yeah?
26:57Oh, dear me.
26:59Please don't be too long.
27:00Careful.
27:01Oh, oh, trailer's moving.
27:03Down.
27:04There we go.
27:06That's one way of doing it.
27:08If it doesn't spill any essential juices,
27:10it's the right way, Chunks.
27:12Yeah.
27:13There.
27:14OK.
27:15The pig has landed.
27:18The hog is in situ.
27:21Let's get the smoke on.
27:24Come on, George.
27:2680 guests have booked and pre-bought meals at €3.50 a head.
27:31They're expecting the juiciest hog roast in town.
27:34Time to see how it's turned out.
27:37We're good to go.
27:38Should we get this unwrapped?
27:39Yeah.
27:39OK.
27:43Is that the angel singing?
27:46Ooh, no shortage of crackling, but are the juices flowing?
27:50Losing all them juices this morning, I was a little bit worried.
27:53But now we're getting down to it.
27:56There's still a load of juices left in here,
27:59so it was just, I was stressing over nothing.
28:05Time for a new stress for this novice caterer.
28:08Stand by your hog.
28:09The punters are here.
28:11Hope you're hungry.
28:12Yeah.
28:13The worst thing that could go wrong at any event
28:16is that nobody likes your food.
28:18Well, that can't happen today.
28:19This little piggy needs to be a big hit
28:22or your new business will be belly up before it's bigger.
28:30You're welcome.
28:30We're getting there with a bucket.
28:32Every penny counts.
28:34There's a lot of generous souls on the costas,
28:37raising funds for charity in all sorts of ways.
28:40I've upselled down the local hospital,
28:42and for the primary school, I've dressed up as Elsa,
28:46I've dressed up as a princess,
28:49and probably a few other things as well, yeah.
28:54We give a lot to the animal charity last year
28:57at the halfway house.
28:59Ruby Rocks.
29:00Ruby Rocks raises a lot of money for the animal charity,
29:03so we go to Benidorm Palace when they're doing an event.
29:07And what about you, Paul?
29:08I've done nothing.
29:10Well, there's still time.
29:12Funniest thing I've done to raise money for charity
29:14would be last November when I dressed up as Freddie Mercury,
29:17grew up the proper tash, went in full drag
29:19and just re-enacted that I wanted breakthrough.
29:21You, Nathan, are a champion.
29:24She goes to the charity shops in Clitheroe
29:26to buy her clothes for Benidorm.
29:29There's nothing wrong with that, though.
29:30No, no, no.
29:31I think it may have been back from there.
29:32Supporting, yeah.
29:32Can you go and help him?
29:43He's only a man blessing.
29:45And in the charity shop in Campersault...
29:48Put him down.
29:49Bobby sins, eh?
29:49It's Carol's busiest day of the week.
29:52And what's your name?
29:53So, 25 euros per mattress, all right?
29:57I'll see if I can do your deal on them.
29:58Yeah.
29:58And after a modest start,
30:01suddenly there's a customer who's after some furniture.
30:04My friend here is renting a property on D-Sector
30:06and it's come unfurnished.
30:08So what we're doing is we're coming now
30:10to kick the whole place out,
30:12knowing that we can do it at a bargain price.
30:14He's come to the right place.
30:16Beds, bedside tables, cabinets, sofas.
30:19He's looking for absolutely everything
30:20and hopefully he can get it under 1,000.
30:23Well, it's looking promising for a big bulk buy,
30:26which will be a great help towards today's sales target
30:29of 700 euros.
30:31Do you want the beds to match?
30:33No, two separate bedrooms.
30:34Two separate bedrooms, yeah.
30:35Okay, yeah.
30:36And if volunteer Karen can encourage them to buy big,
30:40that will go a long way towards
30:41the dog rescue charity's monthly vet bill
30:44of 6,000 euros.
30:46Can we show you the sofa?
30:47Yeah.
30:48The only thing I would suggest
30:49is if you actually see something you like,
30:51you need to say that.
30:52Yeah, two beds.
30:53We'll get customers coming in
30:54and then we'll go out a lot back and then we'll go out.
30:5620?
30:56This crack team of selling volunteers
30:58are schooled by manager Carol.
31:01Coffee time, so we're going to go out and buy some.
31:05And she's no stranger to giving instruction.
31:08Since the age of 10, I decided I wanted to be a teacher.
31:12Karen's busy selling furniture.
31:14Karen, do you want coffee or tea?
31:17And I taught in England for 11 years.
31:20I was a geography teacher.
31:22Listen, did you take coffee or tea?
31:27I was looking for a promotion
31:29and I saw an advert for a job in Dubai.
31:33It was a head of geography job.
31:35Four coffees, one tea and a decaf.
31:38Moved over to Dubai
31:39and we ended up staying there for 24 years.
31:43It was the best decision ever made.
31:47Hello, Janine.
31:47Can I have four coffees, one tea?
31:54It better not be more than 15
31:56because that's all the money I have in my pocket.
31:58At the moment, we've got some customers looking at furniture
32:02and if we sell furniture, we make good money
32:06because obviously it's a high-value item.
32:09I would say an average amount for the shop is between $5.50
32:12on a good day, $600.
32:14But I've just said to Catherine before we came,
32:17I want $700 today, so we go for it.
32:20We actually sell things.
32:21We don't stand around and do nothing.
32:25We actually go out and encourage people
32:27to part with their money.
32:29Thank you, my dears.
32:32See you Saturday.
32:33Don't talk to me when I'm...
32:37I wouldn't dream of it, miss.
32:41But while Boss Carol's been away,
32:43it looks like it's been all hands on deck
32:46to encourage the big furniture spenders
32:48to open their wallets.
32:50They're doing a whole house up.
32:52That's why we want you back.
32:53I'm coming.
32:54I'm here.
32:56I'm here.
33:03In Albia, Meat Bastard Chunks and his family
33:06are cooking up a storm.
33:08Filling up already, which is good.
33:10Yeah.
33:11People are going to start handing their tickets over in a minute
33:12and then systems go.
33:15Today is the biggest day
33:16for their new family barbecue business so far.
33:19They're catering for 80 people.
33:21Just draining me juices.
33:23Don't mind us.
33:25If the hog is a hit, more bookings could follow.
33:28It's all down to how it tastes.
33:30What are we having?
33:31A bit of everything.
33:31Two times, please.
33:33She's going the whole hog.
33:37Thank you very much.
33:38We've been our first customers.
33:39Are we your first customers?
33:41Yes.
33:41We don't win anything.
33:43I'm really sorry.
33:45Two meals down, just 78 to go then.
33:48Tickets, please.
33:50Son George is getting stuck in
33:51and so are the bunters.
33:53But without telling porkies,
33:55do they like it?
33:59It's the biggest one I've ever had in my life.
34:01It's so, so good.
34:03It's beautiful.
34:05And I'm definitely going to follow them around.
34:09Should be easy to find.
34:10Just follow the trail of pork juice.
34:12Thumbs up from everybody.
34:14Well done.
34:15Thank you very much.
34:16It's beautiful.
34:19Well, Chunks, I bet you and the clan
34:21are as happy as pigs in muck.
34:23I didn't want to just do another business.
34:27I wanted a family business.
34:29All right.
34:30I'm all right here.
34:30You need another drink?
34:31Done it.
34:32Yeah.
34:32Done it.
34:33Done it.
34:34Done it.
34:34First one.
34:35First one.
34:35Yeah.
34:36Yes.
34:37You haven't got time for that.
34:38You've got to sell some more.
34:39Oh, okay.
34:41Me too.
34:41Oh, save one for me, will you?
34:46Come in on.
34:47They are spending loads and loads of money.
34:50Fabulous.
34:50It looks like a cash bonanza at the shop.
34:52This is going to be a good sale.
34:54This is going to make a lot of difference today.
34:57And Nigel's big gig.
34:58What do you need again?
34:59Or input.
35:00I'm not sure.
35:01It's looking like a big blowout.
35:03Some wiring or connection issue at the moment.
35:06It can go on forever.
35:17Try that in there now.
35:19Try it in your mic.
35:23Try that.
35:24Check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check.
35:26No, no.
35:27And again.
35:28At the barn in Competa, it's showtime.
35:31The bass player, Nigel, and his band.
35:34Try that one.
35:35My old brain dying.
35:37I think it's the lead.
35:39But they're having big issues with their sound.
35:44Oh, it's up to 2 o'clock, isn't it?
35:46Is it a dodgy lead again?
35:48Or input, something, I'm not sure.
35:50They've been booked as a rock band,
35:52so the sound of silence will not do.
35:55It's like a technical issue,
35:56because we've got two separate units,
36:00Jerry's and Collins,
36:01we should want to link them up
36:02so that we have them both working
36:03all of the channels out of both bits of kit.
36:06We can go on forever.
36:07But some wiring or connection issue at the moment.
36:12Not ideal would the band need today
36:14to help build their fan base
36:15and bag more live bookings.
36:17Oh, oh, hang on, hang on.
36:19And it's sorted.
36:20Oh, sorted?
36:21Is that a lead?
36:22Really?
36:22Yes.
36:23That's why I bought two new leads in case.
36:26Really?
36:27Send in a signal to this.
36:28Oh, wow.
36:29Don't laugh.
36:31We've changed the lead,
36:32and we're all good to go.
36:35So it should sound good.
36:36We're going to make a start, then?
36:39Beautiful.
36:40Right, lads,
36:41let's give the crowd what they came for.
36:43A slice of Simply Red.
36:45What do we do?
36:46Stars.
36:47We've got this.
36:48One, two, three.
36:50One, two, three.
36:50It's that I want to fall for this love
36:56I'm waiting to you in my arms
36:59I, I feel love I won't become ready
37:07You can't beat a bit of Mick.
37:23Thank God it's over.
37:25The last time the gang played here,
37:27they were practically rained off.
37:28But today, the sun has got his hat on.
37:32And the crowd have got their dancing shoes on.
37:34And it looks like Nigel and the lads
37:37might just have picked up
37:38those new followers and fans they needed.
37:41Fans great.
37:42Just down my street.
37:44Fabulous.
37:45Yeah.
37:46Music is everywhere on the costa
37:48so hopefully we'll get quite a few bookings.
37:52The sky's the limit.
37:53Well, when you get your speakers working.
37:56I'm really happy with it.
37:57I think it sounded great.
37:58The punters are happy.
37:59Everyone's having a good time.
38:01Including the guests of honour.
38:02They were great.
38:04I thoroughly enjoyed that.
38:05I was singing along.
38:07Having a great time.
38:08I bet you're glad you came out
38:09to see your husband now, Steve, eh?
38:11Thanks so much.
38:12Really great audience.
38:14That's a long afternoon
38:16and a very successful afternoon.
38:17The way that's played ball
38:18has been fantastic.
38:19J-L-D-Fone vocals.
38:22Large lung bass.
38:24We just were playing together
38:26and it's just getting better.
38:27Thanks, Nigel.
38:28I think we'll probably get
38:31a few gigs from this.
38:32Thanks, everyone.
38:33Appreciate it.
38:34It's going in the right direction
38:35and we're excited to see what happens.
38:38Today, the Costa del Sol.
38:39Tomorrow, Wembley, Nigel.
38:41And I reckon you could have
38:42your first groupie, eh, Steve?
38:46I might become a regular now.
38:48Might.
38:49Yeah, did I see you dancing?
38:52No.
38:52I think I will soon, though,
38:55so very soon.
38:57Yeah.
38:57Yeah.
38:58One step at a time.
39:04So, a lot's of furniture going out.
39:09Everything's got a go, go, go
39:11at Carol's charity shop in Camposol.
39:13They are spending loads and loads of money.
39:15They're having two lots of beds,
39:17double beds,
39:18and then Carol's doing more as well.
39:20Hobby table, suitcase, four chairs.
39:23Where do they live?
39:25D.
39:26That's right, then.
39:27I'm running out of tickets,
39:28so I've got to get his details,
39:30but he's just going,
39:31I'll have that, I'll have that,
39:32so I'm just putting his sign up.
39:32All right, have you been noting it down?
39:34He's noting it down,
39:35and I'm trying to write the prices on here.
39:39Ex-teacher Carol has set her class of volunteers
39:41a tasking test.
39:44She's up today's takings target
39:47to an ambitious 700 euros.
39:49I'm sticking as I can.
39:51Yes!
39:52Good girl.
39:53We have got some more furniture coming in shortly.
39:57Yes.
39:57And sofas.
39:59Yes.
39:59So have you all.
40:00A lot of dining room tables.
40:00You want a dining room table?
40:02I'm not sure when there's a dining room table coming in,
40:06but we can certainly save you one
40:08within the next few days.
40:10Okay.
40:11This is going to be a good sale.
40:13This is going to make a lot of difference today.
40:15Head of Maths,
40:17oh, I'm sorry,
40:18volunteer Catherine is responsible for balancing the till.
40:22Yeah.
40:22So I've added all that up.
40:24That comes to 346 euros.
40:26Yeah, that's cool.
40:27Yeah.
40:27Fabulous.
40:28Unbelievable.
40:29Cheers.
40:30Cracking.
40:31Absolutely brilliant.
40:32But I've now got to go and write all the labels.
40:36They don't need me.
40:38They sold more while I was out getting the coffee
40:40than I had for the rest of the morning.
40:42Most coffees were needed, Carol.
40:44The shop funds a local dog rescue charity.
40:46The vet bill alone is six grand a month.
40:50Mind your bags, please.
40:51So if they can make the 700 Carol's aiming for,
40:55it will be a huge help.
40:57What sort of thing are we collecting?
40:59The boat's 60.
41:01Is that too much?
41:02That's good.
41:03That's good.
41:03Can you spell that for me?
41:05Whereabouts do you live?
41:06I accept to do.
41:07Yeah, we deliver it for that.
41:09Yeah.
41:10For free.
41:11Yeah.
41:11It's another big sale.
41:13We have sold to one couple 17 items.
41:18Wow.
41:19I knew we were doing that as well.
41:20That's fantastic.
41:21Between you.
41:22Yeah.
41:22Well, it's the best I've experienced anyway.
41:24In the six years that Carol's run the shop,
41:27the most they've taken in a day is around 800 euros.
41:32The day has just been mad.
41:35Eight minutes to go.
41:37And we've just been selling, selling, selling,
41:39which has been fantastic.
41:41It's the moment of truth.
41:43Come on, Catherine, to the calculator.
41:45It better be right, Catherine.
41:47I can't look.
41:47Oh, it's worse than exam results day.
41:50Go on, go on.
41:51What are the takings?
41:52So we've done 300 in donations in the drawer.
41:55Yeah.
41:56And we've taken 934 through the till.
42:00So that's 1,234.
42:02Nice.
42:03Ooh.
42:04They've absolutely smashed it.
42:06The day has been brilliant.
42:10The girls have worked really hard.
42:12They've not stopped.
42:131,274.
42:16You're joking.
42:17No.
42:18A world record.
42:19That is a world record.
42:19I think that's the best we've ever done.
42:21So it's been a really worthwhile day.
42:23Team.
42:24High five.
42:25I'm out here.
42:25Everybody's filled.
42:26It's an important part of all our lives because we're all part of this community that helps
42:33each other and that's the big difference here is the community spirit.
42:39Bye, girls.
42:41Well done.
42:42Next time on The Costas, bar owners Andy and Matt go all out to grab some new punters.
42:49You are going to be in the true stress.
42:51Come and stand here.
42:52Singer Wayne and wife Lisa hunt down a new home.
42:55We won't fit in this, would we?
42:57And it's an encore performance for singer Alex as she plans a right old nasal.
43:01Bye.
