00:01Say it loud, say it proud. Us Brits love the costas.
00:05We love Bedrock!
00:07You're here in the sun, lap it up.
00:09We're living the dream, I'll see ya!
00:10Well, maybe not quite that loud, Nathan, but we are.
00:14And with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:17it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:21Ah, this is a lie.
00:22Living that dream can be blooming hard graft.
00:26Misty!
00:27My life, you're right.
00:28Stress level, through the roof.
00:31But at the end of the working day...
00:33Girl power!
00:34Girl power!
00:35Come on, Sam!
00:35Forward!
00:36Booyah!
00:37The quality of life on the costas...
00:40We did it!
00:42...is priceless.
00:43Cheers!
00:45Peace and love.
00:46Cheers.
00:46That's why there will always be...
00:49And this is my mate Franny.
00:50Hiya, Franny.
00:51Brilliant cocktails.
00:52Happy vibe.
00:53Sun, sea, sand.
00:56Bargain-loving Brits in the sun.
01:00Today on the costas...
01:02I don't think I'm going to get through.
01:05Jojo's tempting offer could blow her budget.
01:08Oh, God, look at the roof.
01:10Hi!
01:11Linda's lunch...
01:14Gets off to a smashing start.
01:16OK, I'm so sorry.
01:17Don't worry, don't worry.
01:18And we dish up a second serving of catering couple Ed and Louise...
01:22I'm in charge of the soup today.
01:23...when there's cross words on a trial gig.
01:26Oh, OK.
01:38When I first moved out here, I had everyone's face put on me mugs.
01:4230 kilometres from the tourist hotspot of Malaga, you'll find the much quieter Torrox Costa.
01:48So this is me, me as a blue coat and my dad.
01:51And then I've got like, over here, I've got Gary.
01:57Like, I wouldn't have Gary.
01:59London lass Jojo moved into this seaside apartment just 11 weeks ago.
02:04I have got another one with me grandchildren.
02:07But I don't know where it is.
02:08It might be in the dishwasher, cos I don't wash up.
02:13But she's been living on the costas for almost five years.
02:17I don't like it too burnt.
02:20That's perfect.
02:23It was going to be me and my partner, Gary, who were coming to Spain.
02:26But things didn't go according to plan.
02:29Gary got a pain in his back.
02:30And then we got a phone call that he had pancreatic cancer.
02:35And unfortunately, he only had weeks to live.
02:39Mmm.
02:39God, I love it.
02:41We always wanted to move to Spain and we decided to buy a place that was about 20 minutes away
02:47from my birth mum that I met when I was 39.
02:50Just grab me glasses and get some stuff.
02:53Gary passed away in 2020 and Jojo moved to the caravan they'd bought to be close to her birth mother,
03:00Linda.
03:01You made it. Hello.
03:03Hello, darling.
03:04How you doing?
03:05All right. You?
03:06Yeah.
03:08My mum, Linda, got pregnant at 15 by accident.
03:11She was told she'd have to leave me at the mother and baby place.
03:15And she never forgave herself.
03:17So proud of you.
03:19Love you.
03:21Unfortunately, she passed away from pneumonia in hospital the year before last.
03:28Linda's Finker Farmhouse in Archidonna has stood empty for several years, but that could be about to change.
03:36Right, I'm ready to go.
03:37I was speaking to my stepdad and he was like, well, there's a chance if you want it, you know,
03:44we're probably going to sell it and you can have it for next to nothing.
03:47Because the roof was probably caved in. So he's like talking about sort of 50 grand.
03:54But no one's been to the house for four years and the cost to repair and renovate it could mean
04:00it's not viable.
04:01I just don't know what state's going to be.
04:05I just, fingers crossed, it's not too bad.
04:08Fingers crossed, Jojo, but you'll find out soon.
04:17Yes, girls, we're going walkies. Holly, sit.
04:21Good girl.
04:22OK, come on, girls.
04:23Morning, time for walkies.
04:26Holly, Holly, Holly, Holly, Holly. Come on.
04:29Holly, calm down.
04:31Marbea Bell, Linda, has a packed day ahead.
04:34Obviously the first thing in the day when I wake up is to take my doggies out for their compulsory
04:41ablution walk.
04:42And then I'm going to do an enormous lunch for 50 odd age concerned people.
04:50Linda's been involved with the charity since she moved here in 2011.
04:55I'm on the committee and I do all their events for them.
04:58All their lunches and that type of thing.
05:01Be careful, girls.
05:03So, you know, there are quite a lot of elderly people here and they're very lonely.
05:07Buenos dias.
05:09And Linda's on a mission to make sure those who want it can have some sort of social life and
05:14meet up with other expats.
05:16Come on, girls.
05:17Come, come, come.
05:18So, today is an important day for us because it's our November lunch.
05:24Right, so we have a few people that have changed their various choices.
05:30This time, for the first time, we are going to do a tapas lunch.
05:34They usually serve a traditional British meal, but sharing tapas will hopefully encourage the diners to strike up a conversation.
05:42Listen, mummy's not taking you today.
05:45Oh, dear. I'm out of favour.
05:48Bye-bye, doggies.
05:49It should be a fun day for all involved, but it takes a lot of hard work to pull it
05:54off.
05:55It is a charity, completely run as a charity, and this is why we have a lot of events.
06:02There's usually a donation added to the cost of whatever we are doing.
06:07And later on today, we're going to be doing a quiz and we're also running a raffle.
06:11So, we should raise about four or five hundred euros for the charity.
06:18Ka-ching! But the lunch starts in just over an hour,
06:22and Linda still needs to buy the prizes and sort the tables at the venue.
06:26Hi!
06:28Right, I'm sort of thinking rosé or red.
06:31OK. Maybe rosé, if it's for lunch, we can go maybe for a Côte de Provence.
06:37OK, let's have a look.
06:40I'm paying for that.
06:42Steady on, Linda. At this rate, you'll have spent up before the lunch even starts.
06:46I'm so sorry.
06:47Don't worry, don't worry. I'm so sorry.
06:50Coming up.
06:52Nice and clean.
06:54Ed and Louise's trial catering gig pushes matrimonial harmony to the limit.
06:58Wish it felt like that at home.
07:01I do. Look at me like that.
07:03And Jojo's in for a shock at the thinker.
07:07Oh, God, it's empty.
07:10Someone's been in and stole everything.
07:11I think.
07:22Oh, look at that. You've got a full loaf on there.
07:25It's easy to overindulge on the costas.
07:28I've gone for everything.
07:31Whether it's chowing down on some home comforts.
07:33The British likely roast no matter what the temperature.
07:36Or gobbling up something more exotic.
07:38Or I'm having the cheesy ones with the pink carver.
07:41It can be tricky turning down all the delicious scrum available in Spain.
07:46It's beautiful.
07:48But never fear, because on the Costa del Sol, there's a couple looking out for our waistlines.
07:53Do you want to do it? Because you're good at that.
07:56Cockney lad Ed and his fiancée Louise from Manchester run a restaurant in Soto Grande.
08:03Was everything OK for you guys? Good.
08:07And they provide outside catering services.
08:11Apple crumble and custard.
08:13That might be my lunch.
08:15But in the quieter months, Ed and Louise have started offering a calorie controlled meal delivery service.
08:21So today we're delivering for five people.
08:23What they do is they order five lunches and five dinners for 45 euros.
08:27It doesn't make us a lot of money, but it ticks us over and it pays for something like the
08:32electricity bill.
08:34Ooh, goodies!
08:35Ed normally does the shopping side of it.
08:37I do more the nutritional side of it, because I'm obviously a nutritionist.
08:41But Ed's under the weather today, so Louise has to make and deliver these 50 low-calorie meals by herself.
08:49So what makes this healthy is we use whole wheat pasta, we use very little oil, we're using low-fat
08:57cream cheese to give it like a creamy consistency.
09:03And obviously, tomatoes, tinned tomatoes.
09:06I feel slimmer already.
09:08With the healthy meals, we try and do meals that we know are not going to cost a lot.
09:13So we can keep our costs low and also, in turn, keep the cost to the customer low.
09:20Bargain.
09:20I'm just going to grate up the carrots for the cottage pie.
09:24Well, we all need our five a day.
09:26It thickens it out and it means you don't need as much meat.
09:31So it not only keeps the cost down for us and the customer, it adds nutrients into the cottage pie.
09:39Ah, good tip. Cheap and healthy.
09:42I don't completely cover it with the mash.
09:45We just give them this with a little bit of cheese on top.
09:48And I just think it always looks nice when you've got like a little bit of the mince and gravy
09:54all seeping through the mash.
09:56Oh, stop it. You're making me hungry, Louise.
10:00All the meals are done, they're all boxed, ready to go in the car, so I'm off to do the
10:04deliveries.
10:05And I'm on time, even with that, Ed.
10:08Good work. The home deliveries have been a helpful boost to the couple's pot.
10:13There you go. Enjoy. See you next week. Bye.
10:17But Ed and Louise have a trial catering gig in the pipeline that could be a game changer for their
10:22business.
10:24There you go. All right, darling. See you soon. Bye.
10:34When you come from Malaga, over the mountain, the weather changes drastically.
10:40So it went from like 22 to 13 degrees.
10:45Heading inland to Anticaera.
10:47Right, let's see if we can find her.
10:50Jojo's picking up good pal Bambi from the train station.
10:55Hello, darling. How are you?
10:57Hello, darling. How are you?
10:58How are you?
10:58I'm all right.
10:59Oh, you look lovely. A new car.
11:02I know, I know.
11:02Oh, your hair looks lovely.
11:04Mwah.
11:07The pair are heading up to see Jojo's birth mother, Linda's Finka farmhouse, because Jojo's been offered the chance to
11:13buy it for 50,000 euros.
11:17I'm so excited. I haven't seen this house in over four years. This is crazy. Last time I went, I
11:23just buried Gal.
11:25That's the last time I went to the house, because I stayed there for two days.
11:28I remember.
11:29Yeah.
11:30Before you picked me up. Oh, God. Before we went.
11:33I think you need to maybe prepare for the worst, though, with the...
11:37Yeah, but I hope the kitchen's still standing. I would like to keep the kitchen, because Gowie built the kitchen,
11:43you know what I mean?
11:44There's things that I want to keep, if I can.
11:48Yeah.
11:48But I've got to weigh everything up. There's no point in me being stupid about it.
11:53Yeah.
11:54Jojo's been friends with Bambi since she moved to Spain almost five years ago.
11:59It's going to be tough going up there. It was Gary's birthday yesterday.
12:05It's my anniversary tomorrow.
12:08It's tough seeing where my mum lived and she's passed away.
12:11So it's important to have a friend with you that understands what you've gone through, and she's seen it all.
12:17I think your mum would be made up, because I think she would want you to have it.
12:20Oh, my mum. I think my mum wanted me to have it.
12:22Yeah.
12:22I think she did.
12:23Lovely lady. I'm glad I met her.
12:25Yeah.
12:27As well as supporting her emotionally, Bambi will also be a good source of knowledge.
12:33Will it be off-grid like mine, do you think?
12:36I think we should do it off-grid. So there is a well there.
12:39Okay.
12:39And there is a septic tank there.
12:42Okay.
12:43Because she's recently bought and renovated her own Finca farmhouse.
12:47Have you got proper Finca shoes on, or you've got silly shoes?
12:50I've got silly shoes on.
12:52Oh, come on now.
12:53I know.
12:54Come on.
12:54I know.
12:56Jojo's got a budget of €40,000 to renovate the house, and she's arranged to meet a builder today who
13:02will give her an estimate.
13:04I'm quite looking forward to meeting him anyway and seeing what he's got to say.
13:08Well, until you know a rough idea, you have no clue really, do you? Because you've not been in, have
13:12you?
13:13No.
13:13No.
13:14The Finca has an annex and a swimming pool, as well as plenty of land.
13:18€40,000 could go very quickly on a project of this scale.
13:24Oh, God, look at the roof.
13:27It's not collapsed in, though, is it?
13:29No, it's not.
13:30It's just the tiles have come off.
13:33But before Jojo can even look inside, she needs to try and get on the drive.
13:41It's going to be OK.
13:43Just have faith.
13:47Bambi doesn't look like she's got much faith, Jojo.
13:55I don't think I'm going to get through.
13:57Do you reckon I'm going to get through?
13:58No, I wouldn't drive through there.
14:01No, honestly.
14:02I don't know what I'm walking into when I go there today.
14:06So it could be really sad or it could be really, you know...
14:10I'm expecting the worst, but I'm hoping for the best, secretly.
14:15Let's try and get in.
14:21Oh, dear.
14:23That'll be quite... That's a new padlock, so that'll be a new key.
14:30Someone's been in here.
14:33Oh, God, it's empty.
14:36Someone's been in and stole everything.
14:38It's a big blow that could add even more pressure
14:41to Jojo's tight renovation budget.
15:03I bought this when I was 17.
15:07The fetching round about two, two and a half thousand, I believe.
15:12I bought it for £75 from a lady in York.
15:20When I first started playing clarinet,
15:22my mum wanted me to play Stranger on the Shore.
15:25And it was the first thing I taught myself to play.
15:28And, bless you, she passed away about 15 years ago.
15:31And at her funeral, I played Stranger on the Shore for her,
15:38see if I could still do it.
16:01Yeah, I would never have a part with it, my little love.
16:06And someone who could benefit from some nice,
16:09relaxing clarinet music today is charity champion Linda.
16:14I hope my bottles of wine don't crash into each other.
16:19She's done a smash-and-grab job
16:21picking up raffle and quiz prizes for her charity lunch.
16:24Whoops.
16:25And now her ideas on the menu
16:27are causing quite the stir amongst the more traditional guests.
16:31Oh, dear.
16:33So many messages.
16:34People can't get there on time
16:36and they want to know all sorts of things.
16:39Normally we do a three-course lunch and a glass of wine
16:43and this time we're doing tapas and two glasses of wine.
16:47Ooh, risky.
16:49But embracing this Spanish way of eating
16:50could help get the conversation flowing.
16:54Hi, David.
16:55How are you? Oh, this looks fabulous.
16:58I will make sure that the tables are in order.
17:01The Hummels will be here.
17:03If there's a group of X amount of people
17:05that there's seating for that X amount of people.
17:08Debbie's group will be here
17:09and Debbie's other group will be there.
17:12That's perfect.
17:13And just in time,
17:14because Carol,
17:15who's been president of the charity for nine years,
17:17has just arrived.
17:19Very nice to see you here.
17:22That table is empty.
17:24And those three across the back are empty.
17:27Okay.
17:27We try and add something to the quality of life of the elderly expats here.
17:33Help to alleviate the poverty of loneliness and isolation.
17:38Hi, girls.
17:39Lovely to see you.
17:40Josie.
17:41Hi, Josie.
17:42Nice to see you, darling.
17:44How are you?
17:44Yeah.
17:45So we have lunches like this,
17:46which are partly to raise funds for our charities,
17:50but also so that people could get together, make new friends.
17:54Hi, hi.
17:55How are you girls?
17:57Good.
17:57Very often as people get older, they lose a lot of their friends, you know, year by year.
18:04And they can be very, very lonely at home.
18:07And organizer Linda knows just how important it is to have a bit of company.
18:12I met my husband in 1995 in London, and he was an art dealer.
18:18He had the bluest eyes in the world.
18:20Everybody loved him.
18:22We came here to Spain and got married in Gibraltar in 2015, which was all very exciting.
18:30Sadly, he's now passed away.
18:33He passed away just over a year ago.
18:35Hi, how are you?
18:36Nice to see you.
18:37I'm good.
18:37And you too.
18:39Maretta's are regular at these lunches.
18:41Well, it's always good fun and, you know, it's a nice crowd.
18:45And we've all become good friends from it, so it's great.
18:49But for Sylvia, it's only been a few months.
18:52My husband passed away last year after 65 years of marriage.
18:58And it helps anybody in our situation to make friends and just keep on living.
19:07Lunch is supposed to be served at 1.30.
19:10But Linda is still struggling with the table layout.
19:13I have Janda, who's sitting with Debbie, because Debbie's...
19:17Did they confirm they were coming today?
19:18Well, they did not confirm.
19:20Keep calm, Linda.
19:22Not quite everybody here yet.
19:24We're still trying to get the tables all sorted out.
19:26But it's not easy because people have arrived that weren't on the list
19:32and others that were supposed to come are not coming any longer.
19:36So I'm rejigging all the tables.
19:39Oh, dear. And if the tapas tryout wasn't stressful enough.
19:43This is Mike.
19:45And he's going to be our Quizmas master today.
19:47Happy Quizmas.
19:48She's also doing a quiz for the first time.
19:50So, Mike, you're all sorted out and everything?
19:54Everything's ready?
19:54Because we need to get going because it's just after half past one.
19:58OK.
19:58And obviously everyone's getting hungry.
20:00Linda's taking a supersized gamble today.
20:03I'm just going to make sure Carol's ready to rock and roll.
20:06But if they don't start serving lunch soon, it could become a big miss.
20:17Back in Soto Grande, Ed's feeling better.
20:20And the couple have a trial run for a potential new catering gig.
20:25Over the next week, we're going to be providing
20:27breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks for a weight loss camp.
20:31So down to the chest and pushing up for this guy.
20:35They do workouts all day.
20:37They get provided with healthy meals and snacks.
20:40That's what we're going to be doing.
20:41Louise is a qualified nutritionist.
20:43And if the pair impressed the owners,
20:45they could secure a lucrative regular booking.
20:48I'm really looking forward to it.
20:50Ed's always a little bit apprehensive from new adventures.
20:56Early wake-ups.
20:57I'm really looking forward to the camps on these camps,
20:57because they're usually up at 6, 6.30, breakfast by 7.
21:03This catering couple met in Solihull in 2019.
21:07Nice and keen.
21:08Wish you'd felt like that at home.
21:09I do.
21:11Look at me like that.
21:12Now, now, you two.
21:13No, you don't.
21:14When you cook at home,
21:17I'm the one that goes after you going,
21:19have you finished with this?
21:20Have you finished with this?
21:21We have a sink here and a dishwasher that I open on purpose.
21:26So all he has to do is go up there.
21:28But he doesn't.
21:29He puts it all in the sink.
21:30Because I might actually need that again,
21:33so I want it at hand so I can just wash it quickly and use it.
21:36You put it on a 45-minute rinse in the dishwasher,
21:38I'm wasting time.
21:39Although it might not sound it,
21:41they enjoy combining business and pleasure.
21:44Can't help who you fall in love with.
21:46You can't.
21:49And their new clients are also a husband and wife team.
21:52Training instructor Jamie.
21:54And retreat organiser, Nicole.
21:57I'm one half of the organisation behind it.
22:00There's Jamie, who is my husband and the chief instructor.
22:03And there's me, who is everything behind the scenes.
22:07And attention to detail is important to this business.
22:10The week consists of a variety of different classes,
22:13like circuit training, weight training.
22:15We do some beach activities as well,
22:16which is really, really tough.
22:18So I'll come back really hungry from that.
22:21This is the first time we work with Ed and Louise
22:23and absolutely we'd love to work with them again
22:25if this week is successful.
22:27Ed and Louise will have to graft to make it work out
22:30for their new clients.
22:33And a new kitchen always brings new challenges.
22:37The worst that could happen in the kitchen is
22:38nothing actually works, you know,
22:40and they don't have any fridges
22:42or they've got to buy gas.
22:44So we're having to cook in,
22:46I don't know, campfires or something.
22:48Oh, gosh.
22:49Let's hope not and it all pans out.
22:54Cook it on gas, Ed.
22:55And just as well,
22:56because you need to impress your new clients.
23:02Coming up.
23:03This is going to be nerve-wracking
23:05because someone's been in here.
23:06It's the moments of truth for Jojo.
23:09This is my kitchen that my gal made.
23:12And?
23:12Just put I've made packed lunches and snacks with Asterix.
23:15What?
23:16There's crossed wires for Ed and Louise
23:18at the health retreat.
23:19That isn't what Asterix means.
23:21Oh.
23:33So didn't we have a fun night last night?
23:35Yep.
23:36The cat was meowing all night.
23:38Ed was snoring all night.
23:40So I guess I'm now asleep tired.
23:42I'm guessing not a solid eight hours.
23:44But nutritionist Louise and Chef Ed
23:47are up with the larks to serve breakfast.
23:50Good morning, ladies.
23:51I hope you slept well.
23:53If they impress health retreat owners Nicole and Jamie,
23:56they could secure a regular booking.
23:58Is that OK, ladies?
23:59It was lovely.
24:01Yeah.
24:01It's quite filling, isn't it?
24:03That's the fibre, that.
24:04Because that is absolutely crampacked
24:07with insoluble fibre,
24:09which doesn't get dissolved in the body.
24:11It blows up in your stomach.
24:13So it makes you feel fuller for longer.
24:15Ooh, I could do with some of that.
24:16With breakfast done, it's on to lunch prep.
24:22It's just a laugh a minute, isn't it?
24:24Right, put some more lentils in there.
24:26Well, there's not lentils in there.
24:28Excuse me.
24:29I'm in charge of the soup today.
24:31And if I decide I will put some more lentils in,
24:33I will put some more lentils in.
24:35Oh, OK.
24:36You tell him, Louise.
24:39But it's really important they cooperate
24:41to make the retreat a recurring contract.
24:43Time to double-check the menu for today.
24:47Morning snack will be in the house.
24:50Yeah.
24:51She says she's doing that one.
24:52Probably.
24:52She's doing that one.
24:53I don't know.
24:54She says anything with an asterisk,
24:56she's going to do.
24:57Really?
24:58Somewhere along the line,
24:59there may be a case of cross wires.
25:02Yeah, she's put,
25:04I've made Pat lunches and snacks with asterisks.
25:07What?
25:08Yes.
25:09That isn't what the asterisks means.
25:12Oh, right, OK.
25:13Yeah, so she's made the spreadsheet with the asterisks.
25:16That's what she means.
25:17Oh, right.
25:19We're back on track again, then.
25:21That makes,
25:22yeah, that definitely makes more sense.
25:25I'm so glad we checked that with her.
25:27Me too.
25:28Well, the fitness camp would have no snacks
25:30and you could have lost this lucrative gig.
25:32The most important part of being in the kitchen
25:34is being prepared.
25:35What's the saying?
25:36Prepare for the worst.
25:38What is the saying?
25:39Prepare for the worst.
25:40Open the best.
25:41No.
25:42Yeah, something like that.
25:43About, if you don't prepare, you...
25:45No, prepare.
25:46Er, fail to prepare.
25:48Oh, come on, Louise.
25:50What is it?
25:51Prepare to fail.
25:52If you don't...
25:54We'll be here all night.
25:55Look, it's fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
25:58Hopefully, you two won't fail to impress today.
26:05Firstly, welcome, everybody.
26:08And it's the first time we've ever done a quiz,
26:12which is very exciting.
26:14In Marbella, Linda's working her socks off,
26:16throwing a charity lunch for 50 or so golden oldies.
26:20Teens can be four or six or...
26:23Our menu.
26:24She's switching it up today
26:26by introducing tapas and a quiz.
26:29Yes, sir.
26:30Thank you, Charles.
26:31Where's the punches?
26:31Oh, my goodness.
26:32Big butter.
26:33And she needs it to be a hit
26:34to keep the charity coffers topped up
26:37to fund more lunches.
26:41Which of the following punches
26:42does the Nile not flow through?
26:44That we do all these events
26:46because people down here can socialise.
26:50It doesn't flow through, like, Uganda.
26:52It doesn't flow through Sudan, does it?
26:54Yes, it does.
26:55What we hope to achieve
26:56is stability for the oldies living here.
27:00And many, many of them
27:01have actually lived all over the world.
27:04Which two of the following countries
27:06are not members of the EU?
27:08Finland, Norway, Serbia and Sweden.
27:11Sweden.
27:12Linda's got a lot in common with her guests today.
27:14She's also lived and worked all over the world.
27:17I would say, then, Serbia.
27:19I've been to Serbia, actually, funny enough.
27:21I was conceived in the north of Scotland,
27:24then born in Cape Town in 1947.
27:28Now, don't do your maths, everybody.
27:31Then I grew up in a place called Rhodesia,
27:34and then I went back to Johannesburg
27:36and then came to Europe
27:38and lived in London,
27:39which I loved, adored.
27:42And now I'm here.
27:43Which of the following celebrities
27:45have won Strictly come down and sing?
27:46Bill Bailey, yes.
27:47Yes.
27:47I think Darren Goff, yes.
27:50These are too difficult.
27:52I think it's going very well.
27:54The questions, I've been told,
27:57are quite difficult.
27:58That table over there,
27:59they're full of geniuses.
28:00They're quizzes, you see.
28:02No, we're not competitive.
28:04We're just here for the food and the wine.
28:07So far, the crowd seem to be on board
28:09with the new tapas and trivia lunch.
28:13I don't know how to turn this on.
28:14It won't go on.
28:15But there's one very important person,
28:17Linda, also needs to impress.
28:19Um, David, I need to get this going
28:22and it's gone off.
28:23Charity president, Carol.
28:25The mislaid plans.
28:29Oh, dear.
28:30Linda's trying to give these expat pensioners
28:32the perfect day out.
28:33But what else do us Brits like to do in Spain?
28:38We love exploring.
28:39So we get the charm here, there and everywhere.
28:43We're going Puffin Island.
28:44I mean, that is going to be a major day trip.
28:46I can't wait for that.
28:47The best things to do here are going to the waterfalls,
28:50but we haven't been to yet.
28:52I would love to go to Benidorm Palace.
28:54Never been.
28:55Just enter the seafront, have a walk along the bars,
28:58meet new people.
28:59What?
29:00Spain needs.
29:02Hat rums.
29:02Yes.
29:03Or get on a scooter if you're lazy.
29:06Well, I suppose that is an option.
29:08But whether you prefer to take the energetic route
29:10or the more relaxing one,
29:12everyone needs to refuel.
29:14Tapas Alley's gorgeous.
29:17And a pint of sangria.
29:18A pint of sangria.
29:19Maybe.
29:20Three.
29:20Four.
29:21A few beers around the pool,
29:24show in the evening.
29:25Lovely.
29:26You're living the dream, mate.
29:33Oh, my God.
29:34Stop it.
29:35Yeah, I've got it.
29:35Watch out.
29:36In Archie Donner...
29:38Open, open, open.
29:40Good pals Jojo and Bambi are exploring Jojo's birth mother,
29:45Linda's abandoned Finca farmhouse.
29:47This is going to be nerve-wracking,
29:49because someone's been in here.
29:52She's been offered the chance to buy it for €50,000.
29:55But it's been broken into,
29:57and there might not be enough in the renovation pot
30:00to bring it up to scratch.
30:01The floor still looks good, though.
30:03I like the floor. It's beautiful.
30:04Oh, and one of the...
30:05Is that still here?
30:07Oh, and the chair's still here, which I love.
30:11Do you know what?
30:12It's not as bad as what I thought.
30:15Look at the beautiful Andalusian tiles.
30:17If I can bring it back to its former glory,
30:21it would make me really happy.
30:23Look at the fire.
30:25That fire is amazing.
30:27And we all sit round this and play cards.
30:30Oh, God.
30:32Yeah.
30:35This is so sad.
30:39I'm not holding on to the past.
30:42I'm sort of bringing it into the future.
30:44I want a future up there as well, you know?
30:47But there is one part of the house
30:48that Jojo's hoping to preserve exactly as it was.
30:53Mine's...
30:54This is my kitchen that my gal made.
30:59Kitchen's fine.
31:00Kitchen's exactly what gal made.
31:02Oh, my gosh, that's amazing.
31:03Gary made all this.
31:04Oh, that's lovely.
31:05Oh, my God, it's still all here.
31:07This is perfect.
31:09Oh, my God, it's perfect.
31:10It's like a gift, isn't it, for you that's been left.
31:13Yeah.
31:14I think she's been quite positive, so that's quite nice.
31:17You know, I think as we get further into the house,
31:20if you see stuff of her mum, she might...
31:23She might feel a bit emotional.
31:25Oh, these are my mum's sunglasses.
31:27Oh, look, I bought them.
31:30Oh, my God.
31:30I bought her these ones, too.
31:33Oh, I bought her them.
31:35I can see her in them ones, cos I bought them for her.
31:39I bought them for her in Malaga.
31:46Jojo's birth mother, Linda, was in England
31:48when she passed away almost two years ago.
31:51I know for a fact if I open this wardrobe,
31:56her clothes are going to be in here.
31:57She intended to return to Spain after having an operation.
32:01Yeah.
32:02Oh, bless her.
32:04All her beautiful tops.
32:08She loved colour, my mum.
32:11So she had lovely, beautiful tops and stuff.
32:17She had very good memories here,
32:18and I know the house looks a bit of a mess at the moment,
32:22but, you know, those memories you never forget, do you,
32:25and you can remember them, you can remember how it was.
32:27And if she can put it back to all its glory,
32:29I'm sure she'll make new memories.
32:32Oh, and her coat's here.
32:35Which I might have to put on.
32:39Cos I am blooming freezing.
32:41And I know she wouldn't mind.
32:44Do you know what?
32:45It feels like coming home.
32:47I feel quite excited about it,
32:49so I'm going to try and get some prices,
32:51and we're going to go from there.
32:53I just feel like it's the right thing to do.
32:56I feel like they're both telling me I should be here.
33:01The house will cost €50,000 to buy,
33:04and she's asked the builder to come along today
33:06to give her an estimate for the renovation.
33:09Roberto?
33:09Yeah?
33:10Can you give me ten minutes?
33:12Yeah.
33:13But if it costs more than her €40,000 budget,
33:17she may have to walk away.
33:22Try and keep it under control, okay,
33:24so it's not, like, flopping down like that.
33:26In the hills above Soto Grande...
33:28Ed burnt the chickpeas.
33:30Things are heating up in the kitchen for Ed and Louise.
33:33Listen, I'll cook them more at the oven.
33:34You burnt the chickpeas.
33:36There's no time for a domestic,
33:38because the pair need to impress at the fitness retreat
33:41if they're going to win the work.
33:46And voila!
33:48Yeah!
33:49A bit more meat.
33:50The ladies will be eating a hearty but healthy lunch
33:53once trainer Jamie's given it his seal of approval.
33:56Four potatoes?
33:58Yeah, they're going small.
33:59Good.
34:00I'm with you on the spuds, Jamie.
34:03You don't want anyone hangry in charge of a kettlebell.
34:05Oh!
34:07OMG!
34:08It looks delicious!
34:10The guests seem impressed with the main course.
34:13Oh, wow!
34:15And Ed and Louise even have a calorie-controlled pud
34:18to round off the meal.
34:19It's a smoothie that's been compressed into a shot.
34:24Oh, wow, this is good.
34:26Oh, this is delicious.
34:27This is scrummy yummy.
34:30Sounds like you've got the thumbs up there.
34:32I'm very good.
34:33Amazing.
34:34But have the couple impressed Jamie and Nicole
34:37and secured that regular booking?
34:39Louise has been really brilliant in explaining the nutritional value,
34:43why it's good for them and why it was created in that way for them.
34:47They've really hit the mark with what we're looking for.
34:49It's really important for us to have somebody who really fits into who we are
34:54and how much passion we have for our clients.
34:57The hosts of the retreat are really happy.
34:59They said they're definitely going to be using us again,
35:01so hopefully we'll be coming back for more.
35:03Yeah, absolutely.
35:05I hope you'll be celebrating this one.
35:06I'll polish off the trophy when we get home if you like.
35:09Cool.
35:10Appreciate that.
35:11But that's not a euphemism, by the way.
35:14Hey, cheeky.
35:19Coming up.
35:20Hello, everyone.
35:22I'm going to start doing the draw.
35:24The pensioners developed psychic powers at Linda's lunch raffle.
35:28I told you I'd win.
35:30And...
35:32It's worse than Jojo expected at the Finca.
35:35Yeah, looking at a lot of money.
35:43Hello, hello, hello, everyone.
35:46I'm going to start doing the draw.
35:49In Marbella.
35:50I'm going to ask this table.
35:52Will they please take the first one?
35:55Our glamorous grannies and grandpas have been bonding over bocarones and brain teasers.
36:01Yellow, two, nine, three.
36:06Yay.
36:07Come up and get it.
36:08I never win anything in a raffle.
36:10This is amazing.
36:12It certainly is.
36:13The raffle raises funds to help keep these get-togethers going.
36:17Two, six, nine, pink.
36:20Hello.
36:21I told you I'd win.
36:23You should do the lottery this week, Maretta.
36:25Well, everyone that's come here to participate in the raffle, thank you very, very much.
36:32You're welcome.
36:32That's yours.
36:34What a lovely book.
36:36Yes, very lucky lady.
36:38Raffle prizes snaffled.
36:40Mike's back on the mic to wrap up the quiz.
36:44Can I get a silence for a minute?
36:47Hello!
36:49Silence!
36:51So far, it's a draw, so it's time for a golden goal question. Just don't call it sudden death.
36:57The first Oscar award in 2019.
37:01The first Oscar award in 2019 for Gary Owens won.
37:03Do you remember him there?
37:04Winston Churchill.
37:06The darkest hour.
37:07The darkest hour.
37:07The darkest hour.
37:09The darkest hour.
37:11The darkest hour with the war on table.
37:15Linda took a risk today organising tapas and a fearsomely fiendish quiz, but the gamble paid off.
37:21Thank you to Linda.
37:22People like Linda who organise all of these functions and these societies that help others around.
37:26I just think it's absolutely wonderful out here.
37:29We always have a good lunch, and yeah, they're great fun.
37:33Top marks all round, but the ultimate verdict on Linda's lunch comes from head honcho Carol.
37:39Everybody seems to be having a great time, and the tapas, which we've not done before, seems to be really
37:46working well.
37:47Yes, it does, and they've all enjoyed it, which is lovely.
37:50And it's something a little bit different.
37:51Yes.
37:51And, of course, it's a cultural icon.
37:54Yes.
37:55Since we're in Spain.
37:56Yes, exactly.
37:58I think it was a roaring success, so we'll definitely think about doing that again in the not-too-distant
38:03future.
38:04Now we can go home and stick our feet in the air, which is fabulous, which is what I intend
38:09to do.
38:15Noah's been here for four years, so it's going to be in a bit of a state.
38:18In Archie Donner...
38:20If you can give me some idea about timeframe money and how we can go forward, I'd be really grateful.
38:28Local builder Roberto is assessing the condition of Jojo's birth mother's Finca farmhouse.
38:34So this is the main living room. Obviously, we've had a bit of water damage and damp.
38:38Yeah.
38:39What would it take to seal this room and seal this room?
38:43Well, initially, you're starting on the roof, because obviously you've got leaks.
38:46Yeah.
38:47Got big leaks.
38:48And the beams are in wood.
38:51Right.
38:52And so you probably want the beams of steel.
38:54Right.
38:55And seeing that you would have to do a new roof.
38:57Yeah.
38:58I'm hoping for really good input today, because I want to know how much I've got to put into
39:02this project to see whether it's viable or not.
39:05Looking at about 20,000 just for the roof.
39:07Just for the roof, about 20,000.
39:09That's half of Jojo's total budget for the renovation.
39:13What's the electricity's like?
39:14I'm going to be off grid.
39:16I've decided.
39:17You're going solar.
39:18I'm going solar panels.
39:19Yeah.
39:20Indifferently, you still have to run the cables in.
39:22Right.
39:23You would have to rewire the whole place.
39:25Sounds expensive.
39:27Sounds very expensive.
39:28Yes.
39:29It does.
39:29And even in the kitchen, which looked pristine, there are issues Jojo's untrained eye didn't
39:35spot.
39:37All the dampness down that wall.
39:40All right.
39:40OK.
39:41Nearly 100% that's coming through as well.
39:42OK.
39:43Well, no.
39:43I'm 100% it's coming through.
39:44Yeah, but you wouldn't have to ruin this kitchen, would you?
39:50Erm...
39:50No.
39:51It might have to come out, but it would go back on.
39:53Go back in.
39:54OK.
39:55Yeah.
39:55That's not an issue.
39:56Yeah, I want it to go back in.
39:57Yeah.
39:58This house is full of memories.
40:01So, it's the roof.
40:02It's the roof that's the issue.
40:04Yep.
40:05You need to start there.
40:07Even though Jojo only knew her birth mother Linda for 15 years, she spent months at a
40:13time staying at her finca in Spain.
40:16My mum loved Dutch, Donna.
40:18It was her place.
40:19She absolutely adored it.
40:20And we used to sit there and watch the sun go down and play cards.
40:23So, I think it's going to take a lot for me to walk away.
40:27If we're looking at 20 grand for the roof and maybe 10 for cosmetics, I expected up to
40:3440,000.
40:35But you're looking, I mean, easy plus 40.
40:41You're going to be going probably to about 50.
40:44Yeah.
40:4550 or 60.
40:46Yeah.
40:47Yeah.
40:47Looking at a lot of money.
40:4960,000 is more than Jojo has in her pot.
40:53But the good thing is you can sort of do it in steps.
40:57Yeah.
40:57Right.
40:57So, I would say obviously electric, water, roof.
41:01Yeah.
41:01Is urgent.
41:02Yeah.
41:02Because you want to be able to live.
41:04Yeah.
41:05Okay.
41:05Well, thank you for your honesty.
41:07It may be over budget.
41:09Nice to meet you.
41:09Anyway, we'll be in touch.
41:11Thank you for coming.
41:12You're welcome.
41:13But being able to do the work over a few years means Jojo can spread the cost.
41:20I know it's not as it was, but it's nice coming back and seeing it all again.
41:27And knowing that I think we could take this and make it really special.
