00:00Pretend you're a donkey if you love the costas.
00:04Eh-oh, we love the beach.
00:06Oi, oi, better done, we love ya.
00:09Oi, oi, Kerry and Nicola, we really do.
00:12And with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:16it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:19Ah, this is a lie.
00:21Living that dream can be blooming hard graft.
00:24Misty, my life, you're right.
00:27Stress level, through the roof.
00:30But at the end of the working day...
00:32Go power, go power, come on, Sam.
00:34Forward.
00:34Booyah!
00:35The quality of life on the costas...
00:37Ah!
00:39You did it!
00:40You did it!
00:40...is priceless.
00:42Cheers, everybody.
00:43Peace and love, cheers.
00:45That's why there will always be...
00:47But I don't like where the sun gets in places where it shouldn't get.
00:49Quick, someone talk about the weather.
00:51The weather?
00:52Phew.
00:52It's friendly, it's exciting, it's just like a second home.
00:56Bargain, living Brits, in the sun.
00:58Yeah!
01:01Today on the costas...
01:03Fitness fanatic Paige takes on her biggest ever challenge.
01:07Apprehensive, nervous, excited...
01:11And everything in between.
01:12Look at these little dumplings!
01:14Dog rescuer Susie's on the hunt for homes for a litter of pox.
01:18I love you.
01:20Right, Stacey, I'm going to have to go, darling.
01:22Where are you going now?
01:22At the busiest time?
01:23And with a second helping of Tracey and Mike as they juggle two bars.
01:28It is difficult when you go as well.
01:30We can cope.
01:33Just.
01:40So it is currently 6.52 a.m.
01:46I've been up since half past five.
01:48Most of us Brits move to the costas for a quieter pace of life.
01:53Right.
01:53This is good.
01:54But there is one Costa del Sol resident who's picking it up.
01:59The only thing that's not going on at the moment in my life is sleep.
02:03You're telling me, Paige, it's still dark.
02:08Just finished my morning yoga, so every day I do at least 20 minutes of yoga before I start the day.
02:16For most of us, that will be enough.
02:19I just don't know what to wear.
02:21But Scunthorpe-born performer Paige is on a fitness mission.
02:25These are specific running shorts, but I've not worn them before.
02:29And now I'm thinking to go with something that I've worn before.
02:34I've always had this idea of who I want to be as a person.
02:38Like, I want to be able to run whenever I want.
02:40And I go to the gym and be strong and eat healthy and stop eating chips and all that.
02:46And I just kept making excuse after excuse after excuse like we all do.
02:52And then one day I just thought, right, now it's time.
02:55The hair's going up just to keep it off my face.
03:00Now the Costa del Sol singer is about to take on her most ambitious physical challenge.
03:05These are not coming down to my bum.
03:09And this is just really comfy.
03:12Right.
03:13We are nearly, nearly there.
03:17I am currently about to run my first half marathon.
03:22I said to myself at the beginning of the year that I wanted to do a 5K.
03:25So I did 5K and then I did another 5K.
03:28And then the week after I did a 10K.
03:30And then because I am a bit crazy and put pressure on myself, I signed up for a half marathon.
03:37And here we are.
03:38It's the biggest run Paige has ever done.
03:41A whopping 21.1 kilometres.
03:44Great start.
03:48Oh dear.
03:49I've just been told that there's 1,900 runners taking part.
03:54My marathon number is 729.
03:59And then I've got my runner's vest.
04:02Would I have signed up if I'd have known it was going to be that busy?
04:05I don't know.
04:06Because that's a lot of people.
04:08I'm not really big on crowds.
04:11I have two sets of earphones just in case.
04:14Right, let's go.
04:15The reason I've decided to run a half marathon is because I just want to push myself.
04:22And that's how you grow as a person.
04:24Everybody used to be like, oh you're always happy, you're always smiling.
04:28And I had so much to be grateful for.
04:30I was like, I've got everything that I could ever want.
04:33But I'm not happy.
04:36And then I just thought, what can I do to change that?
04:42But just getting fit and completing the race isn't enough for Paige.
04:46I'm just trying to focus on the excitement.
04:48It's something that I've never done before.
04:50She's also aiming to run faster than she's ever done before.
04:54If I could finish in 1.55, I would be happy.
05:01I would be even happier, 1 minute 50.
05:03Fly me Paige, 1 minute 50?
05:05That is ambitious.
05:07Oh, did I say 1 minute?
05:08You did.
05:09That would be impossible.
05:111 hour.
05:13Well, running nearly 22,000 metres in under 2 hours would still be a massive achievement.
05:18So, apprehensive, nervous, excited, and everything in between.
05:33What do you want, Holly?
05:35This good boy.
05:37Nicely?
05:39Tara doesn't do nicely.
05:40She's like a piranha.
05:42In Estepona...
05:43Who's my best boy?
05:45It's a dog's life for Susie and her hounds.
05:48It's Tucker, Holly, and Tara.
05:50You want to give me your belly?
05:52Hey?
05:52You want to give me your belly?
05:55Tucker, he's the big alpha dog of the whole pack.
05:59Tara's got the sweetest nature, loves everybody.
06:01What's this?
06:03What's this?
06:04Oh, you've stolen it, okay.
06:06And Holly is like Scooby-Doo with no brains, but he's so full of fun.
06:13Sit.
06:14Sit.
06:15I couldn't think of my life without my little fur babies.
06:17Holly, come on, you can't come with me.
06:21Just as well, because on top of these three, Susie looks after dozens more at her rescue kennels up in the nearby hills.
06:28And I've always been an animal lover.
06:33When we didn't have a dog at home, I'd look on strangers' doors and ask them if I could walk the dogs, that kind of thing.
06:38I can't think of doing anything else.
06:44I really couldn't.
06:45Boots!
06:46Good morning!
06:47Good morning!
06:48The first thing that we do is, we go in and clean up all the poop.
06:55Good, good.
06:56And in the meantime, you've got no choice but to say hello to them.
06:58They won't let you go by without jumping up for kisses and cuddles and things like that.
07:04Babies!
07:05Good morning!
07:06Good morning!
07:07Good morning!
07:08Good morning!
07:09Then it's cleaning.
07:10We scrub the place absolutely immaculately clean.
07:14Then the big challenge of the day, we'll be finding homes for seven recently rescued puppies.
07:20Listen to the attitude.
07:27I got a phone call from a Spanish family to say that they'd found these puppies in the campo, and the campo is just the countryside here.
07:36And it was in a storm.
07:37It was freezing cold.
07:38It was torrential rain, thunder and lightning, bad enough at the best of times.
07:42These puppies must have been 10 days old maximum when they were found there, just scattered on the floor.
07:49Two of them hadn't even got their eyes open, so that's how young they were.
07:52We have a lovely set of foster carers.
07:54There you go.
07:55So Adrienne, she's been looking after them ever since.
07:58And it really is quite scary because we don't know how long they've been lying in the campo with no mummy milk in the freezing cold,
08:05so damage could have been done to their internal organs.
08:08We just never know this right at the time.
08:11But they've thrived.
08:13They're very healthy, they're super playful, and in two weeks' time they'll be ready for adoption.
08:19And we have some little monkeys, not so little anymore.
08:23My little babies!
08:26Today, Susie needs to start the vital process of finding them homes.
08:31Morning!
08:32Look at these little dumplings!
08:34They've still got to have vaccinations, and we need the public to see them.
08:41So they're just coming in today so everyone can have a little look and a cuddle.
08:45But to get new owners lined up and ready, they'll need today's cuddles to turn into reservations.
08:50If we're lucky, somebody will say, yes, we'd like to take that one, and I keep them for a couple of weeks longer.
08:57Then they'll go to their homes, otherwise they have to come up here.
09:00We want these dogs saved.
09:03That's the first part.
09:04We save them.
09:05But then the whole project is to get them into a loving home.
09:09It might be time to let everyone else have a look in on those puppy cuddles then.
09:14Uh, Susie?
09:16I love you.
09:17Ooh, this could take a while.
09:23Coming up!
09:24We have one chicken and beef.
09:26Go, lads!
09:27One, go, lads, one.
09:29Mike and Tracey aim for a new roast record.
09:32And a bowl of crackling.
09:34The apprehension's coming now.
09:36And the race day pressure builds for Paige.
09:39God, this feels real.
09:41I know.
09:42I know.
09:54This is the extra tiny bathroom.
09:57You can't get by because of the V-Day.
10:00And the shower, I can't make friends with at all.
10:03For Tracey, life has just become a bit of a squeeze.
10:07As you can see, it's tiny.
10:10You can't turn around because if you turn around, you turn that off with either your boobs or your bums.
10:14You can't win.
10:15And then when you close the door, it's just too claustrophobic.
10:18Oh, God, oh, my God.
10:22They're going to get out now.
10:23When we first met Tracey and her husband Mike in 2021, they'd just downsized to an apartment in the centre of Fuengirola.
10:30the apartment if you can't swing a cap round it but the location is um is brilliant and we've gone
10:39now from a king-size bed to a double bed which doesn't make it easier no be overhang and then
10:47when I go to the toilet at night look I have to move his tootsies moving easy tiger luckily Mike
10:54and his tootsies don't get much time at home let's get this to one started we have moved the house we
11:03now live closest to the bar so we save 40 minutes a day I'm traveling don't work the couple have run
11:11their fuengirola cafe bar since 2019 we're normally down here about half past eight nine o'clock it can
11:17be anything it can be one two half past two before we leave it can be three o'clock half past three four
11:23goes to bed and then we start again the day after oh you run off them tootsies and they're hoping
11:31today is their busiest yet because it's roast dinner day how many buckets of that today we've got 12 14
11:3716 we've got 21 24 we've got 28 confirmed bookings without the walkings on an average we normally have
11:46booking wise and in between 18 and 20 but last week was our busiest week we have 48 with numbers
11:56on the up they're making Yorkshire's while the sun shines and lots of them cater for 55 today if they
12:03can pull that off it'll be the most mouths they've ever fed on a Sunday today we have actually got beef
12:09chicken pork or lamb and I have one chicken and beef go large one go large lamb and a bowl of crackling
12:17so hopefully we should have a busy day with a bit of luck perfect
12:21it doesn't quite feel real yet and I'm sure when I get there it's all gonna sink in
12:32in Fuangirola it's the morning of Paige's big race so it's race day we're gonna get ready for the half
12:40marathon it's her biggest ever physical challenge the apprehensions coming now if you don't push
12:48yourself out your comfort zone then you're never gonna leave where you are and I've learned that
12:54it's you that does that for yourself she'll be one of nearly two thousand people taking part in the
13:10race and we'll be running alongside friend and training partner Jade Jade is my friend who is
13:22equally as crazy as me yeah we support each other we motivate each other it's just nice having
13:34someone with the same mindset someone who wants to go running for fun Paige isn't gonna time watch I'm
13:44gonna clock watch to make sure our pace is as we want it to be because we have got a goal of finishing
13:50it in under two hours I've found I've got a whistle yeah I found a whistle on my best so I'm gonna
13:56blow her if she starts running to Paige hasn't run a half marathon before so if she doesn't pace
14:03herself she could end up injured can I put this in your bag but Paige has also ambitiously set her
14:10heart on completing the mammoth run in under two hours it does get hot when you're running so it's just
14:17better to have without and then you don't have to do it during the race and then you've got a t-shirt
14:21to hold and second of all I want to wear mine when I've finished and it's not smell we're ready I think
14:27so let's go let's go Paige took the biggest gamble of her life in 2020 which way is it we're going up the
14:37streets as you get older you think life's too short so and I ended up handing my notice in and then
14:44booking a flight to Spain and I've been here ever since I'm so glad I'm doing this with you two years
14:53later she decided to follow her childhood dream and become a singer but working late nights in bars was
15:05soon taking its toll it's really easy to get caught up in the culture of being in holiday mode on the
15:11Costa del Sol you can imagine working in pubs bars restaurants you get free drinks all the time it was
15:18so easy to get into this snowball of everyday drinking especially when you're gigging every
15:24night of the week I would have a great gig and I would celebrate and I would have a gig where I didn't
15:32feel confident and I would drown my sorrows I must admit I got to the stage where I think I was a bit
15:38depressed and I thought about it one day and I was like I don't want to drink anymore and I woke up and
15:44I said I'm not drinking and I haven't drank since and that was 20 months ago oh there's the start line
15:50it was the first step towards today this is so exciting so after all the sacrifices and changes
15:59ages made to get here she really needs the race to go well cheers
16:04this just takes me back and we were just two young teenagers then it just brings back happy memories
16:24and you know it's meant to be so the first picture was taken 1987 April 1987 when I was 20 on my birthday
16:37and and we've been going out together then about 18 months about 18 months yeah easily yes
16:44and then we didn't see each other because just drifted apart and you went working away and we met up
16:58again in Benidorm 32 years later pretty much been together ever since that's right joined at the hip
17:10yeah partners in crime and uh yeah crazy very lucky yeah we are very lucky fate
17:19empty plates what I like to say
17:25it's dinner time in Fuengirola and cafe owner Tracy and her husband Mike
17:31are hoping they can break their record and serve up 55 steaming hot sunday roasts
17:37okay then no worries we'll see you it's being flat they need the covers to come through because
17:43they've recently made a new purchase a sports bar we took the other one on four months ago we like
17:51challenges the pair used up all their savings on the second bar so every euro that comes into the cafe
17:58is crucial that Tony's just rebooked in he did cancel yesterday but he's actually rebooked back in so
18:03now that gives us 34 for today up to now without walking without walking oh that's good then i'll go go
18:09are you gonna sit down and have your dinner now i'm gonna sit down on my dinner now all that cooking's
18:14making you hungry eh mike brown sauce it makes the dinner no it doesn't it's disgusting i like brown
18:22sauce so and i just put it on virtually everything they have yeah when i first met him the first
18:27thing i did was a big roast dinner to impress him he'd come along and ask me for a brown sauce
18:31bottom and then went all over it honestly well at least he's consistent right space i'm gonna have
18:39to go darling are you going now at the busiest time i know well i can't go pick it up no worries
18:43i'm in two bars this is what happens sometimes i will see you later be good all right if you need
18:49me help me you'll have to shout very very loud i've turned my phone off it's a tricky juggling act
18:57running two businesses when he does go we do feel the pressure because he's wrong he does the bar
19:04so obviously he's not doing the bar area we're running in and out in and out in and out but when
19:09might follow behind the bar we know where we're up to so yeah it is difficult when he goes but we can
19:15cope just hopefully you'll be at that roast dinner record of 48 and maybe even get a day off soon
19:29look at the size of that tummy are you talking about me never never at the dog shelter in estepona
19:38susie's trying to find homes for the seven puppies which one's that one do you know this is mr hugo is
19:45it yes okay foster mom adrian has been giving them round-the-clock care since they were found
19:51dumped in a field three weeks ago they're just lovely absolutely adore puppies and i can't
19:57bear to think of what people do to them it's always 50 50 when the little ones it's just
20:03oh it doesn't bear thinking of but so yeah susie needs to find homes for the pups as quickly as
20:10possible and at the moment we must have about 175 dogs and puppies there some weeks we have a lot of
20:18adoption some weeks we just don't have any but you can absolutely bet no matter what goes out you have
20:24about 10 times more coming in visitors have started arriving at the shelter but there's not been much
20:29interest in the puppies so far you fall asleep bless him we did interrupt this sunday snooze didn't we
20:39we really do the best we can at the shelter but we don't have comfy beds warm fires sofas that they
20:46can snuggle on when you see them go into their new forever homes that makes it all worthwhile where's
20:55lily one toe the shoes that one that's lily hang on it looks like one of the pups might be getting
21:01some interest do you want to cuddle yes sure yes hi good oh my god she's so tiny still oh this looks promising
21:12he's so cute oh my god easy does it lily she's so beautiful oh i just love dogs we have a lot of dogs in
21:24our finger and we love puppies so that's why we take one more in she's reserved lily so what we now have to do
21:33is remember which one lily is she's got a white tortoise ship lily one toe so because several of them look
21:41very similar to us and in two weeks time when they're vaccinated they'll have the the puppy
21:46vaccination and then she can take them after that after a successful shift at the shelter it's time
21:52for home hello my babies hello and for susie to catch up with her own pack you've been a good boy
22:01good boy if you can go home with a big smile on your face great look there they are one of the puppies
22:10being reserved apart from asking for more adoptions that was almost a perfect day today and it turned
22:19into a perfect month two weeks later lily was loving life with her new family and the other six puppies
22:26were also adopted and were soon settling into their forever homes
22:34coming up it's hotting up for page and jade as the big race begins it's quite warm today so it's
22:42probably harder than they expected and dola goes under the knife it was very painful
22:49so i'm a bit anxious have you got mirrors so i can have a look
23:05whether it's the sunshine big yellow lump in the sky the relaxed pace
23:09that's how i am wide or the bargain loving lifestyle a move to the costas can bring out the best in us
23:17brits we're not here to be millionaires as long as we can afford to put food on the table pay the rent
23:23we're happy bunnies and it was the weather that was the main attraction for sheffield last dola
23:30sheffield's a lovely place but benedorm is better it's too cold in sheffield the weather's beautiful
23:37here 3 000 hours of sun a year no less and i just need my keys and then i'll be all right
23:43but the retired hairdresser tries to be a ray of sunshine too i've got my purse my water
23:50yeah i'm looking forward for today she's a loyal member and attendee of a social group for expats
23:59and holiday makers in benedorm hi darling happy to see you again hi everybody hi everyone we meet up
24:08twice a week and it's been going over a year now and we've got over 16 000 members must be a big pull
24:16a nice turnout today yeah look a friendly bun yeah the 16 000 is the online community but this is
24:25where people can meet for some face-to-face company if they're on their own in benedorm there's people
24:30a lot of them have either lost loved ones or they divorce and they're on their own so we get a good
24:38crowd in and we just have a laugh dola found the group after a tragedy in her own life
24:45i met phil when he came out of the army in 94 and then a year later we got married always dreamt
24:53about living in benedorm so we moved over in 2011 we just went out all the time we just parted and
25:02we sunbed and we went on excursions and got to explore benedorm it was lovely it really was
25:11sadly at the age of just 67 phil was diagnosed with dementia and passed away a year ago phil was a
25:18quiet man i was the loud one uh he was very reserved very quiet but uh he was a lovely man he tracked me
25:28like a queen it was my soul mate people say to me on this solo meet-up they said they want to come
25:37but they don't well i felt lost for six months i didn't know what to do and i thought no i'm going
25:43to reinvent myself i want a new me and the old dollar went when he died now this is the new dollar there
25:52when i walk around benedorm people from these groups recognize me and they just shout doll i'll
25:57go hiya love hiya baba now new dollar doesn't want to waste a single second and that's meant making
26:03a massive life-changing decision oh i can't i can't move around much because um i've just had a tummy
26:10tuck a couple of weeks ago yeah i'm having stitches out today yeah yeah took seven pound off my belly
26:18yeah i used to roll it up with pretty mannequins it was my party trick i yeah but i have no kids
26:25my mouth is through like eating too much phil knew years ago i wanted a tummy tuck and he said if you
26:33want one i have one so i did i'm getting my stitches out today today dola will get to see the results of
26:40her surgery for the first time i've not looked yet because i'm all bandaged up all right ready pretty lady
26:49i can't wait to see it never had a flat belly before so i'm right excited about that
27:03in fuengirola we haven't had one complaint today after customer which is brilliant tracy's been hard
27:10at it in her cafe knocking out dozens of roast dinners we've had an amazing day people said
27:15to be um been referred to by friends so it's nice knowing that we are actually out and about now and
27:22people have got to know that we are probably the best roast on the coast with husband mike they spent
27:28their savings on a second bar so the pair were banking on beating their record of serving 48 roasts
27:34in a day 51 roast dinners wow 17 tapas two starters and 15 18 desserts hey it's a cracking result for
27:47their growing food and drink empire but there's no time to rest hi bern how are you now i'm back at the
27:54other cats to join my cup where we've got another four and a half hours to go never stopped your day
28:01look does it so that's when i have two busy days it's too bad yes
28:11after all that hard graft this couple are due some rare time off
28:15and today there's an extra special treating store with some extra special visitors from the uk
28:21this is daniel hi and this is liam
28:24hi we have at the moment both daughters over our plans today is with having the girls over we're
28:31going to go and have some fun and enjoy ourselves especially with the being pre-birthdays
28:36and she's planned a surprise they think that we're going to bella madna and they're actually going on
28:42jet skis they don't know nothing about it i wanted to make this trip extra special because this is sort of
28:48her 21st but it's also ryan's 30th so obviously it's a joint birthday for the both to sort of a good
28:55time and enjoy being here mum's the word literally
29:02and just as well there's no sign of the surprise
29:09getting a bit paranoid now because of the guys that take on the jet ski out here
29:13we need to get the people here now oh come on if the jet skis don't turn up soon this family's
29:20hard-earned birthday break might be dead in the water
29:29how long are you here for
29:34in bedied home retired hairdresser dola's working the crowd at her solo meetup group
29:43dola joined the group after her husband passed away a year ago and it's helped her to deal with the
29:50loss a bit like therapy for me it helps me it's made me get better because the people come on their
29:56own some don't really like to venture out because they're nervous and and that and where are you from
30:03vanchester but once they come to the group and i talk to them they want to come out i've met some
30:09amazing people from there i love them all but she needs to get away now for a big reveal i've got
30:19to have my tummy tuck stitches out today because they've been in for three weeks now so i can't
30:25wait to have them out i want to be the best version of me new me yeah three weeks ago dola had extensive
30:34surgery to remove seven pounds of excess skin and fat from her stomach and today she'll see the results
30:42for the first time i'm not gonna lie it was very painful so i'm a bit nervous having my stitches out
30:49a bit anxious but they're pulling on me so it feels tight so i know they're ready to come out and then
30:56i can't wait to look in the mirror later on see what it's like and before you can say abdominoplasty
31:04no my belly's a bit swollen okay that's normal to reinvent myself it's helped me to get better
31:14and at my age i need a little bit of help not getting any younger dola spent seven thousand euros
31:21on the procedure and nurse ariana needs to make sure the wound is healing properly
31:28how long before the swelling goes down the swelling of my belly how long one week two weeks a month

31:52do i have to still do a lot of resting and no no normal life oh okay i can go out dancing oh well
32:01not too much not too much with um be careful only be careful yeah okay okay okay is it done yeah
32:10have you got mirrors so i can have a look yeah it's the moment of truth
32:18that is amazing that is the first time i've seen it that is so neat
32:24are you happy i'm very happy thank you thank you dola will need more check-ups over the next few
32:32weeks but the start of her transformation has gone to plan i feel brilliant and i've got a flat belly

33:15happy and just breathe slow your breathing down we've all got our own ways of coping when life
33:20gets a bit much now you're walking a night out without the children i think just to be able to let
33:26your hair down or meet me up with some friends and you know that's going to be there to just have a
33:30laugh with you can choose to relax fly around the pool with a good book and a nice cup of tea

34:11running whistling partner jade yeah it's gonna be such a nice run and she's set herself an ambitious
34:19target one hour and 59 minutes would be my personal record so that's the goal but the goal up here is
34:29is one hour and 50 minutes one hour and 45 maybe you know the hardest thing that i'm going to find is
34:38pacing myself um which is why it's great that i've got jade but um i think that's going to be the most
34:43challenging not pushing myself to be fast too early
34:48the start line after months of training it's finally time good luck page
34:59and they're off
35:07because it's my first half marathon i don't know what to expect

37:26succeed to be fair but it worked out well you're nearly as good at this as you want roast dinners

37:52i don't even know how to express what she was a bit to be fair a bit reluctant

40:55in common with the person that i was a few years ago i care about my health i care about my fitness
